I first read "Journey" back in 4th grade and was so into the story that I wanted to study geology & geography. The story is a veritable handbook of minerals & topography suitable for any age, especially if you're 9 yrs old and being raised in a poverty stricken shit hole with zero opportunities for anything but finding the fastest way OUT of Dodge.

I used to think that Verne should have written a sequel, but upon having reconsidered, and especially having re-read it as an adult, have decided that he didn't need to as the story wraps up quite neatly. This book is great if you're looking for an adventure story.

I didn't read this edition, but this was closest to the collection I listened to.
I enjoyed listeneing to the stories some more some less. Overall I think it's some fun travel/adventure and nature writing. Some of it is not as exciting today anymore as it might have been when it was first written.

I am at the story THE GREEN FLASH. Reading around the part where the two brothers are trying too hard to get Helen to marrying, but the Helen has weird whims as usual cuz she said she won't marry ever until she has seen the green flash in the sky and then her two uncles--who are destined for life to do as she says and as she whims--get to work and decide to take her to green flash. But hey! It's Jules Verne's world and people still don' know what's that Green Flash, precious. So anyway, it got me interested at the part where Helen's two uncles cannot help but take Helen around the world and travel with her.

Ps. No one needs to fear God who believes. Whoever believes are in fact chillaxing and relaxing. Whoever doesn't are praising everyone else except God. Whoever believes fears only God. Whoever doesn't believe fears everyone else and everything else except God.

Ps2--I was at the part of the Book where it says: Man has been created with the finest stature and then he has been dragged to the bottom, reduced to ashes, but then again, man gets reborn.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

3.5*

First time read the author's work?: No

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Minor spoilers follow, so be prepared! Of all these books included, I had never read The Mysterious Island, so that was where I started. I will return to read more over time. For the book in question, I quite enjoyed it, though it surprised me how much Verne wrote about the characters' world building, rather than getting on to the arrival of Captain Nemo and the Nautilus, which was almost the last chapter of the book! And it was also a bit dismaying once he was brought in. No more will be said on that score, as I am not here to completely spoil the book. Regardless, Verne has been one of my favorite authors throughout my reading life, so it was nice to come back to his work after MANY years. Highly recommended!
I am starting Journey to the Center of the Earth 10/14/25. Review will follow completion. I completed reading this novel on 10/21/25, and not having read it since grade school, I can say it was an enjoyable experience to revisit (narrator notwithstanding. More on that later). Thinking back, I am not sure how much I got out of this book's extensive passages on geology, geography, volcanism, and general science represented throughout. My guess is, like most kids, I was in it for the adventure and dinosaurs. In that, the novel does not disappoint!
I am starting Around the World in 80 Days 10/22/25. Review will follow completion. I completed reading on 10/27/25. I believe this is my favorite of the set, though I have not listened to 20000 Leagues Under the Sea yet (in this edition). Having read that one not too long ago, I will save it for that proverbial rainy day. Regarding Around the World in 80 Days, it was by far the most engaging and fast paced, and had me attentive throughout (I will admit parts of The Mysterious Island and Journey to the Center of the Earth left me glazed). One thing surprised me, and still has me a bit perplexed. There was nary a balloon in evidence throughout, despite me having a clear mental picture of one being used during the course of the around the world travel. Perhaps that is due to one of the movie adaptations I may have seen as a kid? Who knows! Personally, I like the novel's approach better, with all the travel being conducted via ground and sea transport. Quite fun, and well recommended! With this, I bid adieu to Mr' Verne's writing for now.

Jules Verne: The Collection combines some of the most exciting adventure stories I have ever read. It includes 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, my personal favorite, and also Journey to the Center of the Earth, and some others.

Jules Verne is one of the earliest science fiction authors, and I think his books from the 1800s are still spectacular to this day. One of the coolest parts of Verne's writing is that he combines real science with some imagination and "coolness" to make the best of both worlds, giving us some really magic-like things while keeping it realistic. He wrote so many things that didn't exist at the time, which exist now, in a scientifically accurate way, that still surprises me how he knew all of that (time travel??). Each story is in a different environment, but still great. You see the deep seas with 20,000 leagues, and the whole earth with Around the World in 80 days.

Some of the writing is a bit old fashioned and hard to understand, but after the first story you get used to it, and appreciate how amazing the writing is even though it uses some archaic language. It is great for any readers who love adventure, science, and imagination.
