OBSESSION (Regency Lovers 2) is the 2nd book in Amazon #1 USA Today Bestselling Author, Carole Mortimer’s, NEW Regency series, Regency Lovers.

Author’s The books in the Regency Lovers series are steaming hot!

Three years ago Lord Alexander Stirling, younger brother of the Duke of Hawkwood, had been shocked to learn he had been made the guardian of fifteen-year-old Miss Amanda Fullerton, the daughter of a man he had once served with in the army. Having absolutely no room in his bachelor life for a young ward Alex immediately enrolled Amanda into Miss Marchment’s School for Young Ladies, and apart from paying the school fees, had promptly forgotten about her.

Unfortunately, he has now received a letter from Miss Marchment informing him Amanda Fullerton is now past the age for continuing as a pupil at her school. The headmistress now requires Alex’s instruction as to whether Amanda should remain at the school as one of the teachers or be returned to him.

There was no question in Alex’s mind that Amanda Fullerton should remain at the school.

Having spent the past three years languishing in the strict confines of Miss Marchment’s school Amanda had no intention of remaining there a moment longer that she had to. Nor did she intend being forced to do so, by the headmistress, or the man who was her guardian but had not so much as visited her at the school once nor requested she ever join him for the holidays.

As far as Amanda is concerned Lord Alexander Stirling has avoided his responsibilities for quite long enough.

She was completely unprepared for the shock of arriving at Lord Stirling’s London home and finding him in bed with an equally naked and beautiful red-haired woman.

Alex is furious at the manner in which his ward has chosen to take it upon herself to arrive completely unannounced and uninvited at his residence in London. That anger is added to by his feeling completely wrong-footed by the timing of Amanda ’s intrusion into that bachelor establishment.

But having arrived, Amanda Fullerton refuses to leave, and without resorting to actually physically removing her, Alex has no choice but to accept his beautiful and disobedient ward is here to stay. An acceptance that is immediately complicated by the unexpected desire Alex quickly realizes he feels for his ward.

When a series of “accidents” put Amanda’s life in danger Alex finds himself stepping up to the role of guardian and protector when he would far rather be Amanda’s lover.

Actually I did more than "tried". I finished this novella and and there was nothing remotely genuine about it, from the historical perspective. Carole M has written some enjoyable regency romances so I know she's aware of the world building that's needed for such a story. The Duke's Cinderella Bride is an example of one of her regencies that I had enjoyed. This novel, on the other, contained characters ( all of them ! ) who didn't speak or behave as if they were part of the regency world.

The BIG problem I had with this novel was the very opening scene:

“Fuck me again, Alex!”

“I’ve already done so three times during the course of this afternoon. If you want any more, then you will have to climb on top and take it. If I should fall asleep while you are doing so, try not to wake me when you leave.”

In case you're wondering, the woman who's begging for sex is NOT the heroine ! The heroine actually walks in on the scene where the H is being ridden by a skanky married OW. The heroine had no problem with this, because she and the H were not involved with each other. She was the H's ward and hadn't seen him since she was 15 yrs old. My brain understands that this is not cheating since they're not in a relationship and are strangers but I don't like when authors think this is sexy. I don't read romance novels for detailed descriptions of the OW's shaved vagina and bouncing boobs while she rides the H's penis, in all her glory.

To make matters worse, for me, the MC's never actually consummate their own relationship during the course of this story ! They perform oral sex on each other but there's no actual intercourse. Now, I want the author to tell me why she thinks it's sexy to describe a full sex scene between the H and another woman and yet leave the MC's relationship unconsummated. There was also another psychotic woman ( the H's ex lover, who is also married ! ) who tries to kill the heroine. The heroine was also far too forward and precocious for an 18 yr old young lady who'd just left school. She even begs the H to allow her to suck his penis. I don't know how how many women would do that, mere days after seeing another woman's vagina all over it ! Incidentally, her former headmistress had also thought it was acceptable ( in regency times ) to teach her about masturbation and sex ( from an intellectual perspective, of course...).

The only thing that I enjoyed in this novella were the cameo appearances made by the H's older brother and his wife. I had enjoyed their novella and will probably do a review later today or tomorrow. In case anyone's interested, the psychotic OW was placed in an asylum by her stupid, cuckolded husband. The OW ( from the opening sex scene ) was dumped by the H after the heroine entered the story.

Safety: There's no cheating, technically, since the MC's were not involved at all when the H was having sex with the skanky OW. However, readers who find such scenes between a H and another woman distasteful may not like this too much...

WOWZERS this was not what I was expecting when I picked this one up. I know this author from my soapy HP reads but heard this has a crazy/delusional OW… and I LOVE a deranged OW. So, I dove in expecting some good old OTT soap opera vibes and got this….

“Fuck me again, Alex!”

Literally, the first sentence. Then I realized the h is listening to the H sexing up another woman. (They aren’t in a relationship, she’s his ward that he hasn’t seen since she was 15) I was shocked but pushed on.

Her mound, Amanda noted with some surprise, was both smooth and completely bare of the same red hair as was on her head.

Amanda stepped back as an even louder shriek filled the room followed by the woman pulling abruptly off that stiff and glistening cock.

Well damn, I didn’t know C.M. had it in her. 😆😆 Early on I realized that I might be missing part of the story, so I jumped to his bro’s book which is just as smutty.

Bottom Line- This is smut in a historical setting that is literally that… just the setting. (Nothing resembles 1817.) It’s unrealistic with no deep feels but is a quick and easy read. My biggest grump is that the crazy OW is barely around. I gobbled up the first two books but won’t continue.

Safety- The H gets around a lot with married women, but that is the only scene in this book.

This was my first read by Mrs Mortimer, and it was a deliciously sinful read.
Spanking is not my thing and at first it rather astonished me. After I accepted it as a means to an end, the story of Amanda and Alex was very enjoyable, the interactions between a young woman who does not shy away and is rather bold because she received the right education, one far from usual and a well known rake who finds himself at loss when around his attractive ward who is no more a child.
It was a very steamy read while the main couple does not even make fully love.

Obsession by Carole Mortimer is quick, fast and at time running towards the end. Little predictable but yet enjoyable for a quick read.

But the story line is not unique and hence you might find it repetitive. Though it's worth reading once!

Unlike the first book in this series this one was not hot, instead it was a bit off for me. The only proper sex scene is between the hero and the OW. The story was a bit tacky rather than erotic.

FINAL DECISION: Unrealistic and simplistic in many ways, but I enjoyed this easy and short read. More impression than full story, this was an okay one time read.

THE STORY: Lord Alexander Stirling was made the guardian of a fifteen year old girl, sent her to a boarding school and promptly forgot about her. Years later, that ward, Amanda Fullerton has come to London to confront Alex and demand that she be recognized. Alex is shocked by Amanda who isn't the demur young woman he expects.

OPINION: This is a easy and uncomplicated read. The characters are written in broad strokes, their relationship is mostly drama without much emotional depth. This isn't one of the complicated romances that I love, but I still thought this book was okay.

Some books are meant to be complicated journeys and some can be enjoyable popcorn that can be read in a quick manner and then put aside. This book is that second type. I enjoyed the quick and dirty story with plenty of heat between the characters. Once the book was done, I put is aside. There wasn't really much to the story beyond the blurb description, but that was okay because I knew what I was getting.

In many ways, this book is like a novella that is focused on the broad outlines of the story.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book has a lot of sexual activity, but no full sexual consummation.

CONNECTED BOOKS: OBSESSION is the second book in the Regency Lovers series. This book can be read as a standalone although there are overlapping characters from the first book.

STAR RATING: I give this book 2.5 stars. This review was originally posted on Top10RomanceBooks.com

Oh, dear. Just no. Yeah, I read the "only read this if you can handle the heat" warning. Har-dee-har-har, as Bugs Bunny would say. I get this is supposed to be "historical fiction" and "erotica" -- but I didn't get any sense of actual historical setting in this story, nor moving erotica, capiche?
description
I have enjoyed CM's work in the past, but I cannot hold back on how dismal and unsexy this novelette was. It hurt so bad!

Honestly, this entire story seemed like a forced writing exercise by the author (contractual obligation maybe?) in mild kink. Only, the spanky-spanky thing would've made more sense, as would the suffragettes, etc., if the whole thing was set about 20 years in the future, more Victorian, era, NOT the Regency. Why? Because it doesn't flow together like it makes any sense! Reputation was EVERYTHING, and this was ignored all the way through this story. If you want characters to be unconventional, ok, but don't act like being unconventional was soooo conventional that everyone would be ok with it! Contradictory, much?!

And the absolutely abysmal numbskullery of the hero -- um, women were getting married-off at 17 and 18 all over the place for centuries, including the 1800's. That, in fact, was their perfect debut -- what having a Season was all about! Like hell an aristocrat of the Ton would act that stupid about her age or the marriage mart. One moment we're told how much a man-of-the-world he is, and the next moment he acts like the village idiot. It's not endearing, not by a long-shot! Obsession nothing; the guy is moron.

And the heroine is not really any better -- oh, frag-damn-edy.

description

In the end, they deserve each other; both so psychologically paradoxical in their characters that it doesn't make sense for them to be with anyone else who isn't also lumbered with a partial lobotomy.

I have been reading books by this author for many years, ever since she started writing for Mills and Boon, in fact. 🙂 I enjoyed this Historical Regency era novella; it was well written and very steamy in places. This author writes in a slightly different and older style than some newer romance authors - eg - her H/h have lots of internal thoughts and those are what drives her character's actions. Continual dialogue does not dominate scenes. It's a matter of getting used to that style again, whenever I read her books. The romance is slightly erotic in nature, not traditional sweet Regency and it was an interesting story. Can be read as a stand alone. Her Historical scenes and character's manners etc are excellent and suited to the era; she is an English author too, which is an added plus for me! 3.5 stars.

A ward and a lord

Amanda is almost nineteen and is no longer able to stay at school. Making her appearance in Alex's bedroom in his new house in London when he's entertaining a married lady is shocking to say the least. She hasn't seen Alex, Lord Stirling, her guardian, in three years after he dumped her at school and forgot about her. Even more shocking, no unmarried lady should know as much about sex as she does and want to know more. In no time at all Alex doesn't know if he's coming or going, but Amanda knows in her heart that Alex is what she wants. When Amanda's life is in danger, Alex can't deny what he feels for Amanda. Steamy sex and hilarious events make a very entertaining story.

Spankings and Psycho's

What exactly does Alex do behind closed doors that the ladies don't want to let go? A question Adam, his brother asks quite often. Steamy story with another dominant man and a strong, smart, independent and sassy female. He thinks he needs no one and she proves otherwise. Overall quality of writing was really good with a few glitches in proofreading. No cheating or cliffhanger and you get a happy ever after. Enjoy

Short read with HEA

An ok read, rather short for me - less than 2 hours to read. Characters are ok and Alex was continuing in the same form as the first book. It's not as sexually explicit as the opening pages will suggest, so tolerable.

Sexy short story

This very different Regency romance has sex prominently featured from the first pages, and frank discussions on the subject throughout. Not what you normally expect from novels set in this time period! Enjoyable read.

Not one of her best

I enjoyed the first book in this series. However, this story plodded. I purchase this author because her stories are steamy and there were a couple of scenes but this was disappointing - it felt forced. Purchase at your own risk. Another person may like it.

The niggle I have about this (and others) is the lack of knowledge about the structure of the historical romance genre as she makes the mistake of incorporating modernist erotica such as EL James instead of keeping it within the historical genre such as written by Kathleen Woodiwiss. I did get a bit sick of the explicitness of the swearing at times. As a result it did get in the way of the story for me. Just tone it down a bit please! Keep it for your modern novels.

Entertaining characters in a generally good book, but it doesn't really need the element of peril in the plot
