Welcome to Eternal Springs, home to more than a thousand “normal” people and four feisty witches. Just a tip, the witches are more fun.
Especially Skye Thornton, an air witch about town who would rather be on the mainland than a touristy island that’s home to four climate zones and a gaping hole under the local school that allows monsters to creep through and wreak havoc on the community.
A reporter, Skye likes to be in the thick of things – she’s a busybody and proud of it – until she quite literally trips over a dead body at the island resort. In quick order, she finds herself fighting off monsters while trying to discover one of the human variety.
Since she can’t keep clear of trouble, Skye is determined to track down a murderer, fight off a wishing well beast and stay away from a local security chief who she’s always hated … or has she?
It’s a full slate of activity for Skye and her witchy friends. The laughs and insults will be flying fast and furious. Of course, so will the danger.
Look out world, here come four witches with attitude, and they’re not taking any prisoners.

When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail.
Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.

I DNFed this one because the first half an hour of reading involved an extended weight shaming passage that literally started with "I don't like to weight-shame, but..." and that's a hard no for me.

DNF - The main character is ridiculously infantile, purposefully annoying, nonfunctional as an adult and a bad representation of an actual person , no one rationalizes this way.
The characters are shallow and the mystery is slow and boring.
Moreover, the inner dialog is the equivalent of a rambling toddler.
Read up to page 113 and stopped because I respect my time more than as to waste it on this book.

This was a good read. Skye finds a dead body. Of course she wants to know what happened. She spends the book trying to solve the murder. Of course she does and all is well for now.

Sooooo

I can honestly say that I usually enjoy Amanda M Lee characters, but I didnt enjoy Skye until around the 8th chapter. I enjoy snark and she was definitely snarky but she wasnt very likable. However, in true Lee fashion I began to root for the heroine and hoped that she got a happy ending. Cant wait to see what the other authors do in this series.

Author Amanda M. Lee weaved another witchy spell out of her imagination to bring a brand new series for fans like!e to to devour!

I just love the humor she tosses into each of her books and Bat Out of Spell is no different. It full of one lines and tongue and cheek human that will have you giggling out loud.

Can't wait to start the second installment of this series!!

Full of sarcastic humor

This is a typical Amanda Lee book with her fantastic snark and wit. Skye is the reporter and a guardian witch of a town that she put in jeopardy back in high school. She decides to investigate a murder and also trade witty barbs with the local resort head of security. It was fun and enjoyable!

It's hard for me to rate this a 3, as I really enjoy all of Amanda M. Lee's series (have read all but the Avery Shaw series), but this one just seemed beneath her writing abilities. The main character seemed more like a teenager, who only cares about herself and to me, that doesn't seem to even resemble any of Amanda's characters. I am not sure I could continue with the series (being unfamiliar with the other 3 authors). I will place them in my wish list and when I finish all of the books I have pending, I might pick this series up again.

This was recommended to me because I've enjoyed several of Gina La Manna's books. This book does share similar qualities; however, there is one serious issue -- the likeability of the protagonist. I think she's meant to come off as aloof and sarcastic. The problem is that you don't know WHY she is supposed to be this way. There's a vague introduction in the beginning that hints at drama and a phone call with a mentor (that she supposedly detests), but, again, WHY? It's very distracting from the story.

If you love an intriguing, snarky, sarcastic Cozy Paranormal Mystery — then you’ll have a blast with the beginning story in the multi-author series Elemental Witches of Eternal Falls.

Amanda M. Lee starts us off with Bat Out of Spell, one funny, snarky story that kept me in giggles throughout the entire story. I will mention that Amanda M. Lee’s sense of humor isn’t for everyone, she even says that plain as day within this book. But if you have one of those quirky funny bones that lives for well placed sarcasm and just the right touch of snark, then you’ll feel right at home here.

After an “incident” at a witchy school more than a decade ago, four elemental witches have been left behind in Eternal Springs to make certain that absolutely nothing escapes through that portal… nothing. These ladies cannot leave the island, and no one can know that they are actually witches set in place as guardians. So their lives are restricted in some ways, but full in others – and really, being stuck on an island is all that you make it. And, besides, if you have a bat familiar who loves corned beef hash, then you’re already ahead of the “unusual” grid.

Skye is probably the most sarcastic person on the island, and she’s quite proud of that fact. Her relationship with the other witches left behind is, at times, uneasy – and she certainly knows how to get the townsfolk up in arms with her nosiness and constant questions. It should be no real surprise that Skye actually tripped over a dead body – and of course, she had to figure out whodunit.

I had fun with this one, and I actually wasn’t even trying to solve the mystery – I was having too much fun giggling at Skye and Swoops, Hut and Augie. If you love Cozy Paranormal Mysteries, then I’d definitely recommend Bat Out of Spell. It’s a great start and now I’m off to pick up the next story, Spell on Earth.

I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited.

This is book 1 in a 4-part series where each book is written by a different author. I've had this book on my mental to-read list for awhile and never got motivated enough to read it. I should have listened to my instincts on this. I didn't enjoy the book.

The female MC, Skye, is not a likable character. She's immature, rude, lazy, and arrogant. She's mean others just because she enjoys it. "That's just the way I roll" seems to be her go-to excuse for her childish behavior. Skye is Aisling from the author's Grimlock series. She's recycled. I can't stand Aisling so I was ticked off to see her recreated in this book.

Her love interest, August "Augie", is a weak character. The author goes out of her way to make him as weak as possible in body, spirit, mind, and character. He's not attractive till the very end when the author suddenly decided to put them together. Up to that point, he was unattractive in everything he did and his looks.

There is zero chemistry between Skye and August. All they did was lash out at each other in mean and hateful ways. We are to believe that they suddenly flipped a switch and went from hate to whatever? It's not love, I don't even buy that it's lust.

The familiars in this story are awful. The author clearly tried for snarky and instead they are hateful and mean.

Hateful and mean is the running thread of this book.

The four witches are nasty to each other. They are not friends, they hate each other, they go out of their way to hurt each other. The whole thing was unpleasant to read.

I've read the descriptions and reviews for future books and I won't be continuing this series. I don't like any of the characters in this book. The next authors don't do anything to redeem these characters so I'm done. There are too many books out there to read ones with such unlikable characters in them.

This is the first book in the Elemental Witches of Eternal Springs series. This one is written by Amanda Lee. Skye Thornton, an air witch, is one of the four witches that has been left at Eternal Springs, an island off the New Jersey shore, following a fire that destroyed the St. Joan of Arc's school they attended. The school was built over a passage to the "other side" that if left open could let any kind of creature or problem onto the island. In doing so, the cover for the witches would be blown. Skye is the owner and reporter for The Town Croaker. She is headed to Eternal Springs Spa and Resort for an announcement she is covering for the paper. She suddenly trips over the body of Blair Whitney, one of the resort's frequent guests for plastic surgery touch ups.
Skye is the nosy, trouble making witch. She feels it is her duty to find out who murdered this woman. The suspects are many including Blair's daughter, Sheridan Whitney; Sheridan's best friend Rebecca Preston, who is also her father's mistress; Rebecca's mother, Lena Preston and Blair's assistant, Jane Smith.
While investigating Blair's death, Skye has to deal with her witch sisters, her mentor Jadis Beasley, her feelings for August Taylor, her familiar Swoops and a stinky creature that has escaped from the other side.
This is a humorous cozy mystery and a quick read. I recommend it to the cozy mystery readers.

I have to say when I heard Amanda M Lee, Leighann Dobbs, Gina Lamanna and Annabel Chase were combining their author magic to write a supernatural series together I may have squealed like a little girl I was that happy. I have read everything these authors have written and loved them all so, so much, I couldn't wait for release day to arrive.

Bat Out of Spell was just fantastic, Skye is funny, oh so funny her snark, sarcasm and sass is always on extreme and I just love it, combine all of that with Air witchy powers, a penchant for sticking her nose into everybody's business thats to being the islands lone reporter and you have one freakin awesome main Character in this story also her Bat familiar is adorable cute even if he does has an addiction to corn beef hash (barf).

Then lets chat for a second about the delectable, delightful security hunk, Augie talk about sweeeet if a little annoying at times but hey he is male he still is just a sweetie and he has that awesome love/not love relationship with Skye or Like/not Like depending on how much trouble Skye is in at the time and the depth of that varies from second to second.

Book 1 was amazing ladies I now am extra eager for 2,3 and 4 plus many more.

Not as.much fun as I thought it would be.

I always enjoy Amanda M Lee's books and this the first in a multi author quartet really piqued my interest, unfortunately the characters really let the book down (in my opinion). The male.romantic interest is almost an afterthought, it has to be Augie he's the only eligible male on the Island that we are introduced to, the relationship between him and Skye just doesn't gel, halfway through the book he undergoes a complete 360 in his attitude, not very believable. Skye is quite unlikable, i.think she's supposed to come off as quirky and we spend a lot of time in her head so everything is from her point of view but when looking at her behaviour from an outside perspective she comes off as quite selfish and uncaring. Hopefully the other three books will be better. We are introduced to the heroines of those books here but again it's from Skye's PoV so they also do not make a favourable first impression. Not to say this book does not have some good points, the Familars are a joy and I loved to little drawings of Skyes bat also four young witches forced to live on a remote Island guarding some "gate to Hell" as punishment for a childhood indiscretion could be good.So here's off to the second book hoping for good things

A sarcastic, funny and self-assured heroine. Sometimes a little too full of herself when she is often blaming others for when things blowup in her face but overall I really liked her. She has no filter on her mouth which gets her into trouble. She also does not apologize for being a busy-body; it annoys me when characters pretend they aren't or put up justifications for it. Not here.

The author explains in a note that her sarcastic style of writing isn't for everyone. It is too bad that she feels she needs to justify herself. Sure it isn't for everyone but many people write in a style that doesn't appeal to everyone. I like sarcasm and snark so it was up my alley.

I don't always like paranormal mysteries because the mystery aspect can be weak. This book does not fall into that category. There are plenty of red herrings and surprises. Magic doesn't always get her the answer she wants and sometimes causes more trouble than it is worth. That I particularly enjoy. Magic, though, does help explain why people will open up to her sometimes when it sometimes seems unrealistic in other amateur detective mystery novels.

Definitely a thumb ups for the author and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Different but appealed to me

Fabulous. Okay this might not be for everyone but I loved it. She is one of the 4 witches left to guard the gate against invasion after they burnt down the school where they were learning magic. She is air, has a foul mouth, thinks a lot of herself and has a bat familiar that is just too keen on corned beef hash. When she literally falls over a dead body her sense of wanting answers kick in. After all as a reporter (the only one) she feels it's her duty to investigate especially when no-one else does. Her magic often goes awry and she has a strange fixation with the security manager. Can the two of them find out how the murder happened? Who was responsible? Why? And perhaps add a new dimension to their fixation? A great plot filled with nice red herrings and lots of humour. Loved the characters - a really diverse mix so that every reader will have someone they like.

Loved it!!

I found this book to be really hilarious and made me laugh out loud so many times. I adore Skye. She is sarcastic, honest and has literally no filter on what comes out of her mouth. I loved her as a character and would love to have a whole series with her and her friends with more than the 4 book that are expected. It would be totally fantastic.
When Skye literally trips over a body, she decides to investigate.
During this investigation she joins forces with August Taylor who is her high school nemesis. They have exchanged barbs and mean remarks throughout their association. Changes occur during the investigation with regard to their relationship.
Skye is a witch who is one of 4 who are the guardian's of a gate that is the portal to all things evil.
Hilarious start to a fabulous new series.
Downloading the next book right now.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

I know this is part of a collaboration with other authors. Amanda wrote the first book about Skye, an air witch.

I am hoping this new series will circle back around. By the end I found myself wanting more books and Skye.

In true Amanda fashion, the heroine was a sarcastic, snarky journalist. I do try to overlook the characters similarities dips the story intrigues me. She succeeded in this case. I want to know more of the history and what happened to the school.

I will continue the series. The next book, by a different author, follows a different member of the witch group.

Five star

Having read all of the Witches of the Midwest novels I have become a big fan of Ms Lee and her snarky sense of humor. She did not disappoint me with book one of An Elemental Witch series. " Must have corner beef " cracked me up every time. This is a very funny start to a series by some of my favorite " cozy authors. " These authors share a wicked sense of humor which translates to many hours of enjoyable reading! Keep up the good work, ladies, I am looking forward to the next three books in the series!

I love Amanda M. Lee. She always makes me laugh and fall in love with her characters. Sometimes she isn't great a writing men... ok maybe that's just one of her series that she writes an over protective jerk who never lets his g/f out of sight.... anyways THIS book is great! I love that all the books are written by different authors and I should have written this when I finished it but I've read the 2nd book since then and I loved that one as well.

I adore Amanda M. Lee and will read anything she writes. I really enjoyed this story and thought it felt unique from her other series. I loved the pet/familiar bat concept as well as the spells. I also liked that her higschool nemesis turned out to be the love interest--a fun twist! My only complaint is that I want more+ of Skye! I know she will likely be feature din the other books, but I want more of her and Augie! Hopefully these authors do another round of stories!

Another great book by Amanda

I just love Amanda’s books. I have read The Wicked Witches of the West series (which is my favorite.) and her Moonstone Bay series which was great. I am hoping she writes more on that one. When I saw this one I had to try it. I just love her snarky heroines. If you like some magic and even snarkiest familiars try this out. You won’t be disappointed.

Disappointing

I confess to being less than impressed by this story. Skye is a thirty year old woman with the maturity and impulse control of a three year old. Augie seems a bit half-witted; he can't seem to comprehend that Skye is not a nun (don't ask), and their interactions are sophomoric at best. The most worthwhile characters are a bat and a cat! The mystery yields plenty of well-written surprises; however, this is not the author's best work.

Not a fan of this.

I was excited to pick up a limited series of witchy goodness, but from the first chapter I was put off by the characters, and the tedious back and forth with the very irritating Swoop. I ultimately got to 34% before deciding this was not for me, checked out the last two chapters (just in case it was worth pushing through. It wasn’t), and I’ll be giving the other three books a pass. One of the few Amanda M. Lee books I don’t like 🤷🏻‍♀️

A funny, engaging read!

As all of her books and stories tend to be, Lee’s approach to a snarky, secretly sweet witch and her slightly cooky life was enchanting, entertaining, and hilarious. She continues to deliver, and I absolutely look forward to the rest of the collaborative series that this novel has kicked off!

Hooray for Amanda M. Lee!!!

I was so excited for a new series by Amanda M Lee! I love every one of the books I've ever read of hers, (I've read then all) and this one is no exception. Smart, funny and independent modern women ( whiche's) who can take care of themselves and others, what's not to love!

If you enjoy snarky in a story that builds, You will enjoy this book.

Fortunately the constant snarkiness in the first part of the story almost turned me off to this book. I’m glad it didn’t. It definitely did go along way toward getting us started and understanding better the people involved. I’m looking forward to the next box.

Excellent book

I really enjoyed this book. There is a mystery of course, but there is also a Hell Gate, witches, talking animals, and a romance. Skye has a very weird snarkiness to her. She is snarky all of the time....until she's not. I love these shared worlds that authors work together on.
