I love the way Joy offers tools that are simple to remember, practical and effective!! I've already incorporated some of her language and tips into my work with clients, and have had positive results. I also love the way each chapter is so easy to digest - especially when I am pressed for time. I can go to a chapter that addresses my need and get the tools in a couple of minutes. This book is a treasure chest full of ideas that work!!

I live tweeted this book’s ideas, tools, techniques and lingo to can help boost happiness and success. “There are four primary emotions: sad, mad, glad and afraid. We can conceptualize them as houses that we inhabit temporarily, with one of them being our primary place of residence. To move from one of the negative houses into the House of Glad, we need to “pay our RENT” – an acronym that stands for Rest, Exercise, Nutrition and Thoughts. A wide variety of simple tools, tricks and techniques can help us to approach these four areas of life in a healthy way. They include breathing exercises, working out in small doses, avoiding sugar and repeating affirmations to ourselves. By using softening words when giving feedback and understanding the different languages of different personality types, we can also improve our communication with others.
Actionable advice:
Spread the message.

culture...
list of expectations...

...take Purple Breaks or do the 4-4-6 exercise in times of stress.

You can also sprinkle these ideas and this language into your day-to-day interactions. For instance, to remind people that you’re Always Flexible and Adaptable, you might include the AFA acronym in response to an email asking you to reschedule a meeting.”

One of the most enjoyable aspects of being a recruiter is curating individualized experiences for prospective students, especially for those who travel from out of state to visit Lexington and the University of Kentucky. In the past, I have received postcards from various cities, gift cards to my favorite donut shops, notebooks, and even offers to join the family for a meal. However, this gift was extra special.

“There are no problems in life. Only situations with an abundance of possible solutions.”

On March 11, 2020, I had to send an email to 40 families letting them know that the annual University of Kentucky College of Fine Arts Open House event was cancelled because of . . . you know why. Little did I know, there was a family traveling from New York just for this event and still wanted to meet with me. Since this family was already on their way to Kentucky and wanted to see UK, I made sure to make it worth their time. Although Lexington was oddly silent and empty at the time, we ended up having an amazing conversation and walk around campus. This particular visit ended with Joy Baldridge giving me a copy of her book!

Fast forward two years and here I am finally wrapping up the book.

Have you ever cracked open a book and read the first 100 pages in one sitting?! It’s rare that I can keep my eyes open for that long. This book was different! With each word I read, it was as if Joy was having a conversation with me while sharing inspirational, thought-provoking, and entertaining stories. What I loved most about this book is that it wasn’t designed to be read from start to finish. Joy encourages the reader to “flip and point." Each chapter is designed to be read and absorbed quickly, offering “Golden Nuggets” and “Joy Gems” that will help make positive, lasting change.

“When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you till it seems you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.” Harriet Beecher Stowe

The most ironic part of this story are the following two words - flexibility and adaptability. Throughout the book, Joy shares stories on how to incorporate these two characteristics into everyday life. Looking back on it, although I wasn’t able to offer a unique Open House event for Joy and her daughter, I was flexible and adaptable, which allowed me to meet Joy and have an amazing visit despite what the next 2 years were about to bring.

“It will never be yesterday, so why do you keep talking about it. You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one.”

What a wonderful, easy to read, inspiring (while thought provoking) guide to living a life of 'joy'! There were so many fantastic nuggets in this book- reminding us that we do not have to conquer the world each day-- rather just have to be focused on our plan and take a step (or two) at a time.

I am not just a HUGE fan of this book. I have had the pleasure of seeing Joy present, at a large Sales Conference, (AAISP) and recall being blown away by her simple, easy, fun and brilliant ways to help take my sales team to the next level. In fact, I was so impressed and 'energized' by Joy...I invited her to present for our Sales Organization.

In a world where there are so many self-help books on being successful... I truly suggest you read this book. It includes dozens of 'real life' things you can instantly do to bring more 'joy' and success to your personal and professional life.

There are four primary emotions: sad, mad, glad and afraid. We can conceptualize them as houses that we inhabit temporarily, with one of them being our primary place of residence. To move from one of the negative houses into the House of Glad, we need to “pay our RENT” – an acronym that stands for Rest, Exercise, Nutrition and Thoughts.

My other takeaways from this Blinkist:
1) People usually reside at the House of Fear, that represents Worries, Fear, Anxieties of their daily lives, their future. To get out of this House, it is to be in PAR:

P=Preparation - Any worries that can be resolved by better preparation of life
A=Acknowledgement - Worries that can’t be predicted, we can only honestly acknowledge their existence, accept it
R=Release - Say goodbye to anxiety
