Sadly, that’s not the case Some people don't even know who he was, or what he did; while others claim he was a villain, and are advocating for the abolition of Columbus Day and everything he represented. Accusations vary from Columbus being a racist, a rapist, a genocidal maniac, and even that he ran a child sex slave ring. The question is, are these allegations true? And, where are the scholars correcting Columbus’ record? Unfortunately, some of the misinformation out there comes from “scholars;” and even those who defend Columbus, won't address the actual story either.
In this book, the reader will learn who modern history revisionists claim Columbus was, and what he did, vs. the actual historical accounts, coming from the mouths of those who knew him well, and wrote about them for us. The conclusion will be inevitable, that is, Columbus was a Hero, and his story and legacy need to be rediscovered again today.
Born and raised in New York City, a spectacular river of people from every part of the world and country flows through my hometown. It inspired me to spend large segments of my life traveling across the globe to experience their native habitats.
The insights my characters bring to the human condition reflect my many adventures and encounters along those journeys.
This book was a very quick read, although at times a very difficult one because of the bad editing. I appreciated that Rafael almost exclusively uses primary sources to back up his claims. I think disagree with some of his conclusions saying that Columbus was the most important person in history after Jesus. Overall a decent book, especially given all of the lies and misquoting around Columbus.
Raphael (originally from Puerto Rico, but now living in the United States), like me, is a true fan of Christopher Columbus. While not a professional scholar, he has written a comprehensive rebuttal to today's anti-Columbus movements.
Even though this is not a scholarly book, what I liked best about it is that Raphael clearly explains about all of the original sources about Columbus, and every statement he makes, he clearly quotes a precise footnote about every single statement he makes.
He addresses every argument that modern revisionists (and uneducated modern loudmouths) put forth, many of which are totally false, lies being repeated over and over. Most of these people never quote any original sources (or misquote them, or partially quote them, leading to different conclusions than if they were not selectively quoted).
In our book club this year we are reading the 1943 Pulitzer-Prize winner, Admiral of the Ocean Sea (about Columbus). I bought Raphael's book to supplement my other reading.
I am REALLY glad I bought this book. He addressed all the things I've heard the anti-Columbus advocates say, and much, much more. People turning against Columbus in the past 30 years has REALLY been disturbing me. If you also feel upset about that, this book will make you feel a lot better, as well as give you the ammunition to refute these people, should you wish to do that. Sadly, Raphael has had to write under a pen name because of the nut-cases out there on this subject.
In recent years I have been hearing some very horrible things about Columbus and I genuinely wanted to know if they were true or not. This book answered my questions, so I gave it a 4 even though there are probably more well written books out there. The basic thing I learned was that the atrocities that have been recently attributed to Columbus did actually happen, but not by Columbus.
Very good book. Concise and straight to the point. Gets at the facts that revisionists keep trying to gloss over or completely distort. A very good start to doing personal and serious research on Columbus. The real truth is out there, but most people are too lazy to look for it themslves and would rather believe pedantic distortions, blatant lies, and specious memes.
Here is an author, Rafael Ortiz, (last name found on his webiste officialchristophercolumbus) who defends Christopher Columbus using the original documents. He basically takes a current myth about Columbus and debunks it using original documents and sources. I love how he quotes the original sources by book, chapter, page, and author so they can easily be found by the reader. I also love how he encourages the reader to discover for themselves the truth of history by reading the original manuscripts; and then to compare what the historical sources from the time of Columbus all say compared to what we are told today. Truth will uncover itself. And he says that this type of journey "will be one of the most amazing historical accounts you will ever read." Many of these originals are written in Latin or Spanish, but if you don't read either, thankfully there have been several people who have translated these documents into English.
I really liked this book. It was easy to read and understand. At times Rafael can get a bit snarky, and sometimes that snark comes off in an offensive manner - not that is wasn't needed, though! He is a truth defender, and some people need truth blatantly in order to hear it or recognize it. But because of that occasional angry defensiveness I did drop half a star. My rating: 4 1/2 stars.
I couldn't put this down. With everything going on today, where the heroes that us Millennials and younger grew up with are relentlessly being torn down in the name of "equity", "diversity", anti-racism, and anti Westernism, we each must decide whether to bow to the pressure or to question it. I started to say ", Indigenous People's Day" but now I will proudly celebrate Columbus Day again. This story is a great microcosm of the macro story told by Douglas Murray in the War on the West. History is complex, and those that try to simplify it into a presentist narrative are doing us all a great disservice. Only because of courageous people like Columbus and Jefferson do we today have the right to question their virtue from a position of wealth and comfort. So, at least do so from an informed position.
Read Columbus’s journal. His words. I could tell you that Adolf hilter was a brilliant man and a good man but that wouldn’t slide. So read his journal please. Columbus wrote this “they should be good servants and intelligent, for I observed that they quickly took in what was said to them, and I believe they would be easily be made Christians,as it appeared they had no religion, our lord being pleased, will take hence, at the time of my departure, six natives for your highness that they may learn to speak.” Shameful.
This is a very good book for debunking the politically correct haters of Columbus, those who would twist the truth, or outright lie about his great accomplishments as an explorer. To hate Columbus is to hate the truth and American society. I highly recommend this book.
Christopher Columbus the hero: defending Columbus from modern day revisionism
This book is awesome. It portrays Christopher Columbus in an honest way. It tells of Columbus virtues and vices. This book should be required reading for all Americans and especially for Columbus detractors who want to get rid of his holiday.
This an amazing and enlightening book on Christopher Columbus. Revisionists are rewriting our U.S. history. I recommend this book which debunks the revisionists and gives the true understanding about Christopher Columbus our hero.
This book stands as a beacon of truth, shedding light on the true character of Christopher Columbus as well as the unsubstantiated claims of those looking to tarnish his legacy in pursuit of ungodly agendas.
This shit was so ass. The author writes like a guy angry on twitter. I had to read it for a history class and his sources are infinitely more interesting than his rambling ass.
