The Medical Marijuana Guide: Cannabis and Your Health

Rate this book
After decades of misinformation about cannabis largely due to the well-funded propaganda campaign in the 1930s, public attitudes toward the drug have finally begun to evolve. In 1996, California became the first state to legalize medical marijuana and since then, 28 other states, 2 U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia have followed suit. Now countless patients are reaping the benefits of this amazing resource which has been used to effectively treat everything from chronic pain to debilitating illnesses. In The Medical Marijuana Guide: Cannabis and Your Health, Dr. Patricia Frye takes a direct, no-nonsense approach to educating readers about cannabis and its medicinal qualities. After having retired from medicine, Dr. Frye was offered an opportunity to practice cannabis treatment. Intrigued, she educated herself on this emerging alternative and is now ready to share with others what she has learned. In this book, using humorous and touching stories from the many situations she has encountered in her practice over the years, Dr. Frye provides valuable information about the undeniable medicinal qualities of cannabis. This book helps to de-stigmatize this misunderstood drug and educate readers on the history of cannabis and how it is used by the medical community today. This is an accessible, enjoyable resource that will not only entertain readers, but may change their lives for the better.

The Medical Marijuana Guide: Cannabis and Your Health Health, Mind & Body

I’ve been wanting to get some practical information on the use of cannabis for use in health problems, as I have more than a handful I’m interested in finding out if it might be helpful with. So I’ve downloaded this and another ebook on the subject to see what I can learn about it. This is a very helpful guide for anyone wanting more information on medical uses of marijuana, a basic place to start. In 1996 CA became the first state to legalize cannabis for medical use, and Dr. Frye in 2015 was looking for some part-time telemedicine work. She was offered work evaluating patients via telemedicine for medical marijuana evaluations. She was floored as she didn’t know anything about marijuana other than having tried it a few times back in high school and twice as a freshman in college. It made her either goofy, sleepy or paranoid so she never thought much of it. She certainly never understood why her peers liked it so much.

Not wanting to pass up the opportunity, she set out to learn about the plant. This guide she came up with is a good starting point for anyone not familiar with the plant, such as non-smokers like myself who are looking at it for pain use and use for help with sleeping.:

The Author--
Patricia Frye, MD, is an independent physician consultant with a focus on cannabis and the role it plays in the management of pain and chronic disease. Frye began in pediatrics, and after a fulfilling medical career, retired to a small farm. However, she longed to return to medicine and was particularly interested in the growing medical marijuana field. Now Frye is licensed to practice in Maryland, District of Columbia, Nevada, and California and runs her own practice, having evaluated over 4,000 patients and guided many through the process of adding medicinal cannabis to their medical regimen. Committed to furthering physician education in the field of cannabinoid medicine, Frye has lectured at medical schools, physician and hospital seminars, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse. She also makes television appearances and writes articles for alternative health publications.

Impulse borrow from the library, who presumably got it because Missouri just passed medical marijuana legislation. It was quite interesting and informative; I appreciated the many citations too and ended up reading some of the cited papers. (Random fact: I did not know that CBDA is a selective COX2 inhibitor!)

I found this to be a very informative book. Much more so than what I have researched on the internet. The author gives pros, cons, and things I have that would make me rethink whether this is the way to go. A God given plant compared to a chemical that is man made? Easy choice, I think.

Having Rheumatoid Arthritis, a total knee replacement, a total shoulder replacement, anxiety, and depression... I really would like to see if it would help me. Florida drug laws have changed so much since July 1, 2018, it's horrible. They send you home from a knee replacement with 7 days of pain meds. It hurts the people who honestly need the pain meds and that isn't right.

My primary care doctor says I would qualify but I'm still in the process of making my decision. Lots of my questions were answered in this book and it's one that I highly recommend if you are in the same situation as I am.

* I was provided an ARC to read from the publisher and NetGalley. It was my decision to read and review this book..

As a text book this works as a book anyone would pick up and read I find it a little difficult at times. The author is well informed and gives the pros and cons to this form of medication. They do not tell you to use it without making sure you as a consumer are well informed. The author talks about legal allegations, the political side effect and you can tell by the passion they want this to become more main stream with the guidance of professionals.

Did she convince me? I am still on the fence due to lack of evidence on long term use on teens though adulthood with mental disorders.

The review will becomes more personal and opinionated from this point on. (Just a Warning)

I have seen the effect of Medical Marijuana though friends who couldn't find relief from though chemical medication. I have seen others who have gone though the process of getting their card and found it was more expensive than conventional medication and found no relief and worse side effects then chemical mediation.

I think everyone has the right to make the decision of their mental and physical health with the proper guide of medical professionals. I think there are benefits to the use of Medically guided Marijuana when it is handled professionally and not handed out like gummy bears. (Which has helped a friend of mine out with her ADHD and mood swings.)

I do see Marijuana as a gateway drug if not taken though the guidance of a medical professional that is able to help those needing relief from pain, anxiety, Adhd and more.

Have I looked into using Medical Marijuana for my Anxiety and ADHD? Yes but the cost is more than all of my chemical medications and drs visit put together.

This was wonderful information and insight into a very misunderstood medical Marijuana.

The Medical Marijuana Guide: Cannabis and Your Health is written by a medical doctor, Dr. Frye, who has first hand experience with the role that cannabis plays in medical treatment. This air of legitimacy firmly grounds the book in facts, rather than creating a political agenda. The political limitations are discussed though, as the research that could be done is stalled by the government. That said, the book focuses on the medical value of cannabis, and it is this information that makes this book so valuable.

I learned quite a bit and am grateful to Dr. Frye for sharing her experience and wisdom. It is hard to find trustworthy medical information in this climate of misinformation. This book is the real deal. Dr. Frye knows that of which she speaks, and we have much to learn from her.

I don't know a whole lot about this topic, so I was interested to learn more. Although the information is outdated, I still thought it might be useful... until I reached the section on treatment of autistic persons, that is. There I encountered a complete misunderstanding of us, our motivations, our behaviors, and our rights. Here is a clinician following ABA-esque principles and seeing autistic patients as objects to be realigned with neurotypical norms instead of people to be understood on our own terms. I cannot lend any credit to the rest of this book when that section fosters such prejudice. Frye should not be allowed to work with autistic patients, and her lack of knowledge, compassion, and trauma-informed care makes me sick. This book feeds the fascist propaganda of RFK and others who are bent on doing us harm.

Great source for beginners to medical cannabis! Reputable, well-cited, and abundant with information. I especially appreciated that she dedicated a whole chapter to the potential risks of cannabis, acknowledging that like any other medicine, it's not a magical cure-all. There is some scientific jargon in the book, but it's not overly technical to the point that a layperson couldn't understand. I'd feel comfortable giving a copy of this to a family member who is skeptical of cannabis because of how informative, realistic, scientifically-backed, and accessible it is.

This was the best book on Medical Marijuana I have read. Very informative. A must read for anyone with chronic pain or illness that prescription medication has not been able to help. Patricia Frye MD gives very specific information on treating chronic pain with cannabis.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book courtesy of NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is in-depth, highly detailed information about virtually every aspect of medical marijuana. The author, Dr. Frye, is clear an expert professional in this field.

I heard the audiobook edition. A print or Kindle version would be more useful becaus you could make notes, bookmarks, and highlights.

Targeted at lay people. It covers the ECS in some depth but if you've done any prior research on the topic you probably know most of the ECS information provided.

I’m giving it 5 stars largely because, while being such a technical book that is very thoroughly researched (based on 22 pages of references cited in the appendix), it is extremely readable and comprehensive in all the topics it covers.
There is common sense advice for the novice user, a couple of technical recipes, research cited regarding what ailments cannabis can alleviate, excellent explanations of the cannabinoids found in dispensary cannabis products (CBAG? CBN? THCA? CBA? Etc) and a short history of the very LONG history of cannabis use. It’s a small, thorough guide that I highly recommend.
