The deepest dive yet into Atomic Robo's history is here! Constantinople is the setting for the crime of the century. The 11th Century, that is!
On the eve of the First Crusade, the fate of the world rests in the hands of a disgraced soldier, an assassin, an orphan, a scribe, and a thief who have no idea they're pawns in a clash of civilizations. Heretical texts, ancient star maps, sacred geometries, and one impossible heist.
Collects all five issues of the Real Science Adventures: The Nicodemus Job miniseries.
Brian Clevinger is best known as the author of the most popular sprite webcomic, and one of the most popular webcomics overall, 8-Bit Theater. He is also the author of the self-published novel Nuklear Age. Clevinger has recently received attention for his Eisner-nominated print comic Atomic Robo.
Claiming that his "favorite comics are the ones where the jokes are on the reader," Clevinger is an expert in using anti-climax, interface alterations, and the occasional false ending to play with the reader's expectations. It is a testament to both his sense of humor and his writing skills that these "jokes on the reader" are usually beloved by his fanbase.
I picked this up for the Meredith McClaren art, but then was pleasantly surprised to find it is a prequel to the Atomic Robo series I used to read. It was a good series, but I fell behind and then it just dropped off my radar.
Unfortunately, I didn't really see much connection between this series set in 1095 in Constantinople and the Atomic Robo volumes I have managed to read. Maybe I'm missing something because I have forgotten crucial details of the series or it ties to events that happened after I stopped reading.
So all I'm left with is a generic heist plot set long ago and far away. The characters have charm, sure, and the dialogue is witty, but ultimately it feels disposable.

Still in the Atomic Robo universe, this one goes back to the 11th century and is a crime caper. Robo isn't involved but who knows how this could the in later with Atomic Robo's adventures.

LOVED THIS. Excellent heist story set in ancient Constantinople. Imagine if Leverage was a swords and sandals epic and you're there. There's a heist within a heist so the reader doesn't quite know how it'll get pulled off, and of course there's a twist ending. The characters are fantastic and the artwork is gorgeous. Really, really enjoyed the art. Would love more stories about this crew!
A heist story in the vein of Ocean's Eleven, set in 11th century Constantinople, written by the genius behind Atomic Robo? What's not to love?
Despite the Real Science Adventures label, this book actually has nothing to do with Atomic Robo. Which is totally fine! It's an excellent read regardless. The writing is tight, the characters are well-realized, the pace is brisk, and the dialogue is strong and frequently hilarious.
This story immediately became one of my favorites when I first read it on the Atomic Robo website, and despite it being available for free I had no compunctions at all about paying for a physical copy.
This was a fascinating heist comic that has me asking so many questions! Why is Ultra interested in this? How will this eventually tie into Robo? What will our plucky band of ne'er-do-wells do next?
The answers, of course, are not in this book.
This book is the 11th C caper flick that I never knew that I wanted! Also, up until now I had no idea that I wanted to be a scribe in Constantinople from a thousand years ago. See how educational this book is?
