I read this as an intro to this series of books. It's a disappointing skim through the rich history of the Byzantine empire. Compared to Lost to the West: The Forgotten Byzantine Empire That Rescued Western Civilization, which I recently read, it leaves out a huge amount of detail. I think this style of writing is best suited to smaller time periods in history or specific events. Anything larger in scope is poorly served.

“The Byzantine Empire” reads like a bachelor thesis that hasn’t focused properly on one major theme but instead gives a paragraph about the most notable events in a period too long to be considered for such a short document. The kindest way to put it is to say, the book gives a very abstract overview over the Byzantine Empire but even that is a stretch. The content more resembles a hastily put together webpage from a high schooler without any real depth. It is a real question what the value of this book is.
Additionally, the content suffers from numerous grammar mistakes and general all purpose sentences such as “Everyone knows this. “ Who is everyone? Me? Because I surely did not know this. The citizen of the Byzantine Empire from whom we know not enough to make such a statement? The book is rife with statements that either carry no meaning at all or are pure speculation on the author’s part ridiculously disguised as a general, all purpose background information.
The printing of the book is equally subpar. The text on the back is for a completely different book about US president Jackson. The title and subtitle on the front is blurry and ill positioned with no proper margin at the top. The text itself is also ill formatted leading to half a blank page in ongoing text several times. The margins are not properly set.
These are just the major issues that spring immediately to mind. As you might have gathered, I do not recommend this book.
The opinion you will have of this book will really depend on what you're looking for. Personally, I was seeking a superficial history of the Byzantine Empire to refresh my memory on the topic, and in that regard, the book served its purpose. It provides a broad overview of the Eastern Roman Empire, covering its foundations in the fourth century under Constantine the Great and extending to its downfall at the hands of the Ottoman Empire.
However, if you are looking for a comprehensive introduction to the fascinating history of this empire, you might find this book lacking. While it offers a good starting point, it misses many important details that are crucial for a deeper understanding of Byzantium's key events and significant figures. There are undoubtedly more detailed and thorough books available for those who wish to delve deeper into the complexities of Byzantine history.
The book covers the story of the eastern roman empire from its foundations during the fourth century and the reign of Constantine to its demise and downfall at the hands of the ottoman empire (and partly because of the crusades).
It is a good brief description of the events but as expected from a short book, it is impossible to really tell the stories and backgrounds happening during so many years in such a few pages, many names are mix and complicated to follow, as for few people there is a real description of the situation of the empire, the person or its conquest.
This one depends on what you're looking for. Superficial, written on a Middle School level but informative and a good overall summary of a fascinating part of the world that I, for one, knew nothing about.
This book was a lot like a long Wikipedia article, but with less detail. In his quest to get rid of the "boring, dry facts" the author has stripped the history of any context or meaning. In several places I found myself wondering how things were related, or what the significance of a detail was.
The Byzantine Empire has its importance in history and this book gives a watered-down insight into it. I would have liked to get a more in depth look into this time frame with more information.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Well wasn't that an eye opener, the classic roman era changed so much with the Constantine. At least it cleared up a few thoughts i had, had. I like it. Thanks .
This empire helped to preserve knowledge and civilization that was damaged with the fall of the western Roman empire. Time is spent going over the fall of the Roman empire including how some 29 emperors were murdered, the persecution of Christians and then the decision to make Christianity the official religion of the empire and how Byzantium became the 'new Rome.'
The Byzantine Empire had its own problems to deal with, of course, including Attila the Hun and his hoard of invaders. A comprehensive legal code was developed and Greek replaced Latin as the main language.
The book are covers the effect of the plague on the Empire, a revolt in Constantinople and the attacks by the Muslim armies. It's amazing that this empire lasted as long as it did with all the military and health problems that it faced.
As with the books in this series this one is very readable, never dull but still containing a lot of information.
