This is the third installment of the romance sports series about the Sharks, a professional hockey team, by Samantha Whiskey. Both Warren and Jeannine were friends and had the same set of friends whom are now married– their stories appear in Grinder (Gage and Bailey, book 1) and Enforcer (Rory and Paige, book 2). I so enjoy books in a series where characters are revisited and you learn where they are now in their lives, and each of these characters are featured again in Winger!
Warren and Jeannine both didn’t want to get in a serious relationship. He was focused on his career as a winger on a professional hockey team, and she was a chef who owned three restaurants that took up most of her free time. They both were very flirtatious for over a year after they spent time more together at their friends’ weddings and at social events that followed. Through the writing, it was obvious they were very attracted to each other and I was pleased when the finally acted on it because I really liked the two of them together.
Their one night union resulted in a pregnancy and Jeannie decided not to tell Warren which I didn’t like (in all fairness he was away playing hockey for the Canadian Olympic team, but she could have called…but then the story wouldn’t not have unfolded the way it did and would have been over in a chapter so I get it). They both stated they did not want children or a serious relationship when they were together, so she avoided him and all the social gatherings that she normally would have attended when he returned because she didn’t want him to feel obligated. When he learns of the pregnancy, he is immediately excited and supportive. She is obviously relieved, because even though she thought this wasn’t what she had originally wanted or planned, she was in love with her child and very committed to being a good mom, with or without the father’s participation.
The last quarter of the book is very romantic and sweet and Warren proves over and over that he has fallen in love with Jeannine. She knew he was a “playboy” before, and he lets her know without a doubt that she is the only one for him and that he hadn’t been with anyone else but her since their one night together. I loved how they were friends first which is so important in any romantic relationship. As a reader, you really route for the two of them to be together which isn’t always the case in some books.
I really liked Warren; he was respectful, honest, funny, genuine, dedicated, sexy, and very charming. I admired Jeannine, too. She was a smart career woman who was only trying to protect her heart and friendships. Even though she is ambitious, after being with Warren she realizes she does love him unconditionally and can have it all, a family and a career. He is very supportive of her career too, and they work together to make all of their dreams come true. It’s not easy and his career demands a lot of time away from home, but they make it work. After a lot of angst, fun times, and sexy times, they finally get their happy ending and a beautiful family.
