I received this book as an ARC to give my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed this book Hailey wrote in a different style and I think that is what made it so perfect. She wrote of the main character in the present, thinking about the past, and waiting for what was to come.
It starts with Claire Hadlin she is waiting at a coffee shop for Derek Correy to meet her after he has landed back from an 8 month deployment overseas. As she waiting she is both nervous and anxious in seeing him again; for not only did she miss him but she was also 8 months along in her pregnancy. She came to the coffee shop on hour early in hopes to settle her nerves and while she is waiting we get to go through all of her thoughts. How she met with Derek their time together however short it was, and what happened at the time that he left leaving her unsure about her situation with him.
She was working at an open house helping the realtor Max host, she was the interior designer. She had been standing in the foyer for some time and decided to go to the kitchen to get some wine and a snack and that is where the rest of the people were that had come to look at the house. With each person that she talked with when she met them and they asked her about the house she explained that Max was the relator then handed them her simple card and told them she was the interior designer if they ever need one she was there for them. While there she felt someone staring at her. She looked over and saw a very handsome man looking her up and down not necessarily at her face when he did he gave her this leering type of smile that told her he was a player, and she most definitely did not like players..
Later Max motioned her to come out on the deck with him, her friend Tamara had arrived so they both went out where as Max introduced both of the ladies to Adam. Adam asked for two of her cards because the friend that he was there with him who really liked her work; then he was rushing off to retrieve the man. That man turned out being the man in the kitchen Derek. As they talked on the deck Clair learned that Derek only had a week and a half left on his leave. Then everyone decided that they would go out to a club the following night, but they really had to convince Clair to go. She was convinced that he was a player and that he was trying to play her for his entertainment so to speak before he left on deployment.
Now if I were to go into more of this story of the of the few days that Clair was able to spend with Derek before his leave was abruptly cut short then that would take all of the fun out of reading the book. This is a short book but so full of emotions, her remembering the past, worrying of the future and his reaction when he finally arrives at the coffee shop. This is one book that you just would not want to pass up on.

This is my honest and voluntary review of this ARC.
At a showing of her concepts/designs, along with her friend and coworker, Claire finds herself sipping wine, handing out cards, and making small talk about her ideas. A stare from across the room catches Claire’s eyes. Her coworker and some friends decide the night is young, the showing is over, it is time to go out for drinks and dancing. Not what she wants to do, but when the very handsome guy (who also happens to be the guy who was staring at her earlier) jokes and taunts her enough, she gives in.
Along with some buddies, Derrick is at this showing. He spots the most gorgeous woman he has seen from across the room. The night is about having fun and enjoying freedom before his next call of duty begins. As luck would have it, his friend introduces him to Claire, aka the most beautiful woman he has seen. Going out after the showing is what Derrick is most interested in, only she isn’t so willing. Challenge accepted.
Dancing and drinks, a great way to let loose and enjoy. One is about to leave, one is not willing to let the night end that way. Going outside to get air is where the whole whirlwind of events happen for Claire and Derrick. He leaves for his deployment in one week. During that time it seems these two become really quite attached, spending all their time together that they possibly can.
It is time for his deployment, they have spent the night letting each other know how much they mean to one another. Derrick pulls a hurtful way to say goodbye – cold as ice. Claire is hurt and doesn’t understand, especially after what they just shared. Now some eight months later she is meeting up with the one who broke her heart, Derrick. She has a surprise that while keeping in touch via emails and texts she didn’t mention.
When he arrives for their meeting up, he is excited and then when he sees the surprise Claire seems to see hurt and anger roll through him. She explains and tells him that this is his. It takes him off guard but when he thinks about it, he is more excited about it than he thought. This is just the very beginning of a long lasting love with a very awesome future ahead of them.

This was a quick read man meets lady before he is deployed for eight months and their short affair produces a big surprise. When he gets back will their feelings be the same and how will he act to this surprise. Derek is a soldier whom is about to be deployed. He meets Claire an interior decorator at an open house.
He can't take his eyes off of her. When Claire first sees him she immediately thinks playboy with many girls at his beck and call. She goes out with him after being introduced by a friend. They go to a club as a group and things get heavy. Claire finds herself spending all of her free time with Derek before he deploys. This story is told a little different it opens with Claire waiting at a coffee shop for Derek. Waiting to tell him a big secret.
Then the story goes into flashback. It shows you how the two first met and their dates. I kind of liked how this story was told. The way it was told made sense to me. It made it seem more real. I don't think I have ever read a story written like this one. At first I was a little confused then I realized it included past and present events.
And poor Claire does not know what to do with herself while waiting for him. How will Derek react to her news will he want to continue their relationship or was she just a temporary fling. They did keep in touch while he was deployed. I only wish that we could have read Derek's thoughts this story was told strictly through Claire's POV.
When I first saw the blurb to this story I just knew I had to read it and the cover also helped me in my decision. Lol. I was not disappointed at all I would definitely recommend this book and can see myself reading it again.
Like I said this is a short story and I read it in one sitting. So on one of those days you need something to read and don't have the time to read something longer but have time for a short read this would be a good choice. The only thing missing is an epilogue.

Claire sits anxiously in a cafe, waiting for Derek to come home after a deployment. She looks at the clock, looks at her phone, looks at the baristas, and absentmindedly rubs her stomach. She shouldn't feel this nervous about meeting him. She loves him- the dark brown eyes that drew her in, that gorgeous smile of his, his copper brown hair with that one lock that sticks out behind his right ear... Claire rubs her stomach again, and wonders how Derek will react when she tells him that she's eight months pregnant with his child.
A one-night stand that heats up into a passionate romance leads to love between Claire and Derek. All of that changes, however, when Derek is suddenly called to leave for deployment. He becomes cold and distant, especially towards Claire. He leaves, but Claire has trouble forgetting about him. She can't forget about him- especially since she is carrying his child. But will that secret tear them apart? Or will it bring them closer together?
I would have liked to see a little more detail and conflict be addressed, but I'm pleased with the outcome of the book. Well done, Ms. Pierce!

Infantry is the story of a woman and a man that meet at a coffee shop to talk after being apart for 8 months. It's also the story of their history and how they fell in love. This is a very simple story. I enjoyed the story but I didn't love it.
I like that Claire is a strong, independent woman. She owns a business and she has her life together. Derek doesn't get a lot of story because it's from Claire's perspective.
The story is told in the form of Claire is in the coffee shop now and she remembers the then of them meeting. I thought the transitions between the two were a bit uneven and jarring. I wanted to know more about Derek being in the military. He's left as an enigma at the end of the story.
The characters aren't developed because the story is more about the moment in time. This is a contemporary love story. It's also a fall in love quick story. The story is told in first person POV. I would recommend it to anyone that likes a quick love story. Overall I liked the story and I thought the writing was pretty good. I will read more from this author in the future.

Claire first met Derek at an open house showing of an apartment she had been the decorator for. Derek was there with a mate who introduced them, at first she was angry him for checking her out so openly but the more she knew him the more he appealed to her. Several dates later there was a strong connection that they both felt, but he was due to ship out overseas again in a few days leaving them both hesitant to commit further than a few nights together of bliss. Four weeks later Claire finds out she is pregnant but it was not the type of news she wanted to send in an email. When Derek arrives back from his tour of duty he his shocked to find her eight months pregnant. I really liked this story, it was short but well written with an ending that was uncertain until the last page. I enjoyed the characterization of Claire and Derek, both were very well drawn and the author painted a vivid picture in my mind of their time together.

This was a short novella, but a great story! The story held my attention, but it also was heartwarming and emotional. When reading the story, it may make you feel sad, confused, appalled, and even euphoric. Derek is in the service and about to be deployed. Claire is an interior decorator and attending an open house. Claire meets Derek, and the chemistry between Claire and Derek was off-the-chart hot! When Derek returns, will he find out the secret that Claire was keeping? Will Claire and Derek be able to rekindle what they had before his deployment? Find out the answers to this and more after reading the book. The scenes are well written, fast-paced and flow smoothly from one scene to the next. I recommend this book because the story will pique your interest and draw you in from the beginning.

Claire is an interior designer of homes so one night at a showing Max brought his team over to give there opinion on how this house looked but when Derek came into this house and saw Claire walking around the room talking to people he was about ready to explode down blow. He just thought to himself what a fine woman now Claire she was not the partying type her friend Tamara and Adam they were and different story so when Max and Derek came up to them at the open house and starting talking and asked them out the next night she had know other objections but to say yes and go. So the night can around and dancing was done also drinking,kissing and well you will have read this sexy,fun read like I voluntary did to see how it all turned out. C.

Derek and Claire meet and hit it off shortly before he deploys. The time they spend together is quality time, then they are separated for eight months. Claire has requested to see him when he gets back as she has something to tell him. They parted in a dubious manner before he left, leaving the heroine and the reader to wonder how the reunion will go. This was a quick easy read, although since this is an ARC I hope they go thru it again to clean it up some. Missing or misused words and formatting issues need to be resolved to make this an even better read. I've read this author before and will read more from her in the future.

This was a relatively small and fast-paced read. We get flashbacks from the last 8 months while Claire is sitting at the coffe shop and awaits for Derek's return.
Claire finds herself pregnant with Derek's baby after a hot week together. While Derek awaits his return at the army, he decides to persue and Claire and spend his last week with her. Derek is confident and sweet in a way. He really knows how to deal with hardships; his life wasn't all roses. He's so considerate and actually designs a really romantic setting for their first date. Their week together leave her with many emotions and a little surprise. Will she find the courage and tell Derek about her pregnancy when he comes back? How will he react? Lovely past/present story
Infantry by Haley Pierce is a sweet romance that reveals Claire and Derek’s story through glimpses of the past and Claire’s present. The timing of their budding romance and relationship was inopportune, but there’s hope for an HEA.
This author explores what I imagine many military couples experience from Claire’s perspective. Claire’s reflections of her interactions with Derek are like being on a roller coaster, up and positive one minute then negative and unsure the next.
Overall a well written fast paced book I enjoyed reading as the HEA was just what us hopeless romantics want.

I read this book as part of an arc program. This is the story about Claire and Derek. Claire met Derek at an open house sale where she was the interior designer. Derek invited Claire out to a club before he left to go overseas for almost eight months. They had about a week together before he left and they had a great connection. When Derek was gone, they did manage to e-mail a few times and Claire asked to see him as soon as he returned. Claire was pregnant and unsure how Derek would react. The book is told through flashbacks recreating their week together. I enjoyed the story and thought they were good together. Good one.

When Claire meets Derek at a party she is attracted to him and didn’t think it would be nothing more between them, but Claire didn’t realize that the feelings were mutual.
Before Derek leaves he tries to get to know Claire a little more only it gets a little more complicated because as it gets closer for his departure, Derek knows that Claire is it for him. Only he doesn’t know how to express it.

Derek is a smooth talker and even smoother womanizer. He only has a short amount of time before he’s shipped off again for eight months. Claire decides to throw caution to the wind and do something she’s never done before, have a one-night stand. Claire and Derek are hot together. Derek’s words had Claire giving in to him more than she should but who could blame her.
This writer touches the doubt and insecurities of women and the uncertainty of what a man’s thinking. Infantry is a quick novella that reminds us of the beginnings of a relationship and the HEA we all hope for. Quick read that you won’t be able to put down.

This is a story about two strangers who meet and decide to become intimate with a passionate one-night stand before Derek’s leave is over and he has to deploy. Claire has never done anything like this, and is sure Derek is a “player”, but she risks it. She ends up pregnant and is not sure what the future will hold for her, not even sure how he feels about her or how he will feel about his baby she has carried for 8 months now.
The story was handled well and, though this may not be a unique scenario, the reader has shared the emotions of the characters and is invested in the outcome. Take a chance on this one. It will be worth your time.

Claire had only known Derek a few days but was falling hard. After having spent the whole day before and night with him things changed for the worse when all of a sudden he said he had to leave and gave her a key to lock up then he was gone. Now it's 8 months later his plane has landed and he's due to show up any moment. Will Derek be happy to see her or will he be upset and want nothing to do with her. It was wrote from Claire's version only and I think it would of been better if it was written in both of their thoughts. But I still thought it was a good read. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

This story and I did just not go hand in hand. I felt mostly boredom while reading it and ended up speed reading most of it. It does not mean it was a bad book at all, just it did very little for me. The story line was a bit strange, mostly reminicence of the main character and that way of story telling just does not hold it´s appeal to me. Sorry about that. I borrowed the book also on KU as I don´t know how to access some books I download to the computer on my phone, and when comparing them the ending in the ARC version had an epilogue I liked much better than the end of the book in KU.

Good heartfelt read! Claire is sweet. Derek is hot and in the service. They hit it off, but he'ss got to go back to the service, very suddenly. She'ss quite sad and surprised. Will he come back? Will she ever see him again? She'ss not sure what actually happened, but she must see him one more time. They eMail each other, but still there are no promises.... What should she do? An enjoyable read and very heart wrenching!

This book gives use Claire and Derek's story. This novella is well written, the characters likable and the plot realistic. With most of the book told through flashbacks, we learn how these two meet and the single passion filled week they spend together before Derek is deployed. Now, eight months later with his return Claire has a shocking revelation for him. Will this be welcome surprise or the end of their relationship before it could ever really get started. An enjoyable read. I am posting a voluntary, honest review.

What a sweet book. Claire is interior designer and at a party showcasing her designs she meets Derek, a hunky military man. She learns he is to be deployed in ten days. But that doesn’t stop Derek from getting to know her better. I like how the book is written, it’s eight months after they met but Claire is reflecting back on their short time together and their passionate time together. A perfect HEA for this book!

Derek and Claire
This was a cute and fast read. Claire has been very cautious in regards to dating but that doesn't stop the ever-charming Derek. There's a strong connection between them but with Derek deploying soon they are both are afraid of expressing their feelings.
I like that Claire gave Derek a chance. He seemed like such a great guy; he wanted to spend as much of his free time with her as possible. I can't imagine not knowing if and when a loved one was coming back, the endless waiting.
I can't wait to read more from this author.

They meet right before Derek is deployed in the army, when he was only home for a week they dated. Thinking he’s a player but still takes a chance. Sometimes they're both hesitant about starting this relationship. Claire becomes pregnant and Derek is overseas, will he come back and how will he take the news ?

A very sweet and tender military romance. What was supposed to be a one and done type thing turned into so much more. Claire and Derek did not expect to have the feelings they did when he left for a military mission. Now eight months later he is back and Claire wonders if he has thought as much about her as she has him. Will he accept the secret she has or will he walk away? Good story but not done well
What I liked - Both main characters, their commitment to each other, that it had an HEA, love at first sight, and a few more things I'm sure.
What I didn't like - The pace, the confusing and not indicated back and forth between now and the high, the underdevelopment, and the very abrupt ending with no marriage plans or even knowing the sex of the baby.
Overall - Cute but confusing story that's a good length but with poor pacing and a totally abrupt dissatisfying ending that left me wondering and bothered.

I loved Derek and Claire came together to raise their daughter. I kinda hated Derek in the beginning, just a little tiny bit. Then once they hookup down the road, the next morning he all but basically throws her out like yesterday's trash. The beginning to me did drag before getting to the juicy parts. I can relate to Derek's job. I'm a military wife of almost 9yrs, so being gone for a short/long period of time tends to get to us. At times I just wanted Claire to voice her opinion more openly, instead of holding her thoughts to herself.

Ms. Pierce has done it again. This particular author coveys excellent storylines and extremely well developed characters. It may be a novella, but she works every word! I just couldn’t understand why Derek took so long to return her bracelet. You won’t go wrong reading this book or anything else by this author. Great work!

I received an ARC copy of this book to voluntarily review. It's my first book/novella by Haley Pierce and I absolutely loved it. Claire is the good girl, interior designer and Derek is the bad boy being deployed in 10 days. It's a love at first sight story, that they don't admit too at first because of their fears. They keep in touch throughout the deployment and meet up again with a cute surprise and a HEA. I will definitely read more by Haley.

This is a well written story of Claire and Derek. Their characters are strong and likable and the story moves quickly and smoothly. It's told mostly through flashbacks to the passionate week they had together before Derek is deployed. Fast forward eight months , Claire has news for Derek , will this damage their relationship before it even began? I enjoyed reading their story.

This is a solid read – short, enjoyable and sweet. It is a well written page-turner and moves at a brisk pace. The author takes us on this amazing journey of love at first sight and deployment with the characters Claire and Derek. The plot is well developed, relatable and consistent. A very interesting read.
