An Amish Journey #1

Hearts in Harmony

Rate this book
They both love music. Will God deny what brings them such joy?

Musical prodigy Levi Shetler hasn’t touched a piano since he secretly played one years ago. His strict Amish community forbids instruments or the singing of any music not in their approved songbook. Levi asks God often why music tempts him when playing an instrument isn’t allowed in his world.

One person knows Levi’s talents: Mary Hershberger, the girl who promised years ago to keep his secret. Mary comes from a more liberal district than Levi, but she’s facing family troubles of her own. The mutual care for an aging Englischer, Adeline, reunites Mary and Levi as young adults. They realize that, despite their differences, they have a shared love of music—and a shared confusion about whether their talents are God-given gifts or temptations luring them into the Englisch world.

The couple realizes they must compromise or part ways, but a tragic accident shakes their decision. Both Mary and Levi will need to reconcile what they love with what their hearts say is right—because even as their passion for music brings them together, it could be what tears them apart.

The first novel in the new Amish Journeys series by bestselling author Beth Wiseman, Hearts in Harmony explores how far the heart will travel for the melody of love.

This is an Amish Fiction loving story. This book is inspirational and well-written. I really loved all the characters of this book, and I loved that this book shows that some Amish people are not perfect. I loved that it also show that some problems the English people face the Amish face to. I love the main story line and all the side story lines too. I have found that I normally do not like books that has to many side story lines, but this book it was done really well. If you like Amish Romance Fiction book then you should check this one out. (*)

As children Mary and Levi meet at the English funeral of Percy Collins. Levi and Mary are both Amish but from different areas under different bishops with some starkly differing ideas. Levi has a talent for playing the piano though playing an instrument is not allowed in the Amish community. Mary struggles with a similar issue as she loves to sing, not just the few worship songs allowed. But like Levi she is expected to obey the Amish rules.
Eight years later Percy’s widow Adeline is having an estate sale. Though coming from different beliefs Mary’s family seek to help out Adeline financially by buying things at the sale and finding ways to help. Mary and Levi meet up at Adeline’s as they both seek to help her out in practical ways. They both become very attached to the older woman. Then another person arrives on the scene. Natalie is a relative of Adeline’s though her family had lost contact with her after Percy died. What impact will this person have on Adeline and on the two younger friends? And how will Levi and Mary deal with the whole music issue ? Or will it end up uniting them or driving them from their faith and perhaps each other?
I fell in love with Mary, Adeline and Levi and couldn’t wait to see how it would all turn out. As a person who loves music and who feels I could never be part of a church or community that doesn’t allow music, I couldn’t imagine not being allowed to sing. I could understand why Levi and Mary had issues with the Amish rules, when so much of the bible talks of singing to the Lord etc. It was interesting to see how the situation works out over the course of the novel, beautiful to see how relationships blossom and how community comes together to help out when needed. This is a story of friendship, family and romance as well as a story of faith in God’s plan.
This is the second book I have read by this author. The other was from a different series. I loved this one just as much as I did the first book I read by her. This gentle story of words, actions, beliefs and consequences, drew me in from the beginning and touched my emotions in various ways. I highly recommend this book as a great read.

This is a great beginning to a new series from Beth Wiseman, one of my favorite Amish fiction authors. She brings together two young Amish people in a unique way with a story that is both fun and heartbreaking. This emotional story is one you won't want to miss.

In a genre that can easily become stale, Wiseman tells a story that is unique. I liked the way that she highlighted the differences between two Old Order Amish districts. There was also the uniqueness of the relationship between Adeline, an elderly English widow, and Mary and Levi. These aspects of the storyline were like nothing I've read in the genre and I really enjoyed them.

Another thing I really liked was that the story takes place in Indiana but not Shipshewana, which is the most well-known Amish community. This story takes place in southern Indiana Amish communities which were nice to read about. Wiseman does a wonderful job of bringing the area to life on the pages of the book.

From the likable and believable characters to the unique storyline there was nothing about this book I disliked. It's a great start to a new series and one I'm excited to read. I can't wait for the next book in the series to see what happens. This book is definitely a must-read for Amish fiction fans!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was not required to write a review. All opinions are mine.

Beth Wiseman, who just happens to top my list of favorite authors, has once again written an amazing, heart warming novel, a fabulous start to a new series entitled "Amish Journeys". I always approach a new series with some trepidation.... will this new creation meet my high expectations?! After all, every one of Beth's books has been a winner in my opinion, so how can another possibly be as powerful and interesting as her last? NO WORRIES! "Hearts in Harmony" was NO disappointment. After reading the first page, I was on my way travelling to Amish country in Indiana and walking alongside the lovable characters as they took their roller coaster ride through life.

It is known that the Plain People have just as many trials and obstacles as we do, however, this story brings to light some particular problems that I myself have never really thought about. How many of us have thought about the music that plays a very large part of our church service? Music is very much discouraged and forbidden in this Plain life. Yes, the Amish do sing, but do not have musical instruments, nor is an individual encouraged to ever play one. That would be much too worldly and prideful. Beth tackles this subject in a unique, respectful manner.

Make sure to have a box of tissues nearby as you will have need of them from the first chapter to the last. The two main characters are brought together in an unusual way, both sensitive, caring individuals who are faced with some difficult decisions, should they do what they love even though it is deeply frowned upon in their faith? All of the characters in this novel are so easy to love. The reader is so caught up in their quests to be happy in the darkest hour that you feel very deep emotions and thoughts.

The setting was perfect, far from the close knit Amish community. This added more confusion to do what was right , would anyone know if rules were broken? The relationships that developed amongst the many characters was highly emotional and touching. There are underlying messages that are intricately woven into this story of faith, forgiveness, and loving self and others regardless of the circumstances.

The plot was intense, full of unexpected twists and turns, making it very difficult for the reader to put down. Just when you think the characters have found a sense of completeness and peace, a boulder is put in the path! One that seems impossible to get past.

If you are tired of the usual Amish fiction genre, this is the perfect book to grab your attention. Beth Wiseman does a superior job of bringing some humour into the highly emotional, intense moments. This book will remain with you long after you have finished reading it.

Definitely worthy of five stars. Now, the biggest problem is waiting for Book Two in this series!!!

This was a really neat story! Although both Mary and Levi questioned the reasoning behind the Amish not allowing musical pursuits, that wasn’t the heart of the book. It was fun, however, to see the role music played in bringing these two Amish people together. I did appreciate the way the two of them handled their uncertainties about this subject.

What this story mainly celebrated was friendship between both young and old, Amish and English, and even the differences between Amish districts. The relationships that developed between Mary, Levi, Natalie, and Adeline were what fueled my enjoyment of this unique tale. I look forward to future books in this series.

Not my absolute favorite book, but still good nonetheless. The characters were good, but my favorite character was definitely Adeline. She was so sweet and loving and just a wonderful lady. I aspire to be like her when I get older.

A chance meeting of two Amish children at a funeral 8 years prior are reunited when they offer to help the elderly widow. They along with a distant cousin of the widow’s husband, bring joy and family that she had been lacking.
The Amish live 40 miles apart, but when you compare their lives it seems like 100 years, the districts are so different, one progressive and the other, well! This being said, one of the funniest parts of this book happens at the home of the less modern, Levi! Laugh out loud moment.
I loved how these three-showed compassion to their fellow man, and decided to do one of the hardest things, care giving.
We see that these three all live differently, but the family dynamics are not all that dissimilar.
A story full of love, tears, and a few good laughs.

I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Zondervan, and was not required to give a positive review.

Not at all what I was expecting with a mostly sad storyline. The subplots didn't really come together for me for a clear message. I usually feel invested in characters but did not in this one. I did learn more about Amish beliefs which was nice.

Have you ever had a secret passion for something that always called to you? That's how Levi Shetler feels about music.

Since I studied music through college, I was pulled into this book immediately. I love how the author was able to convey the passion that Levi felt. I understand how it feels to have a burning desire for music! The way that Levi would long for the piano was well written because I too have had that same desire.

Throughout the entire book, I was rooting for Levi and Mary to be able to keep their musical talents, especially since they made excellent points in their arguements, like how instruments are mentioned in the Bible and you are to make "a joyful noise unto the Lord."

I'm very excited to see the rest of this new series!

I really enjoyed this book, stories like this one is why I am drawn to Amish themed books! This is now my favorite of Beth Wiseman's, and while she always tells a nice story, this one really spoke to me!

Mary meets Levi by chance, when she's 10. While at a funeral, she's trying to find the bathroom, she comes across Levi sitting at a piano in the house of the surviving widow. She's shocked at the sight of him sitting on the piano bench because they are both Amish (obviously the home owner is not), and they are not allowed to play musical instruments, especially a piano. They strike up a friendship, but quickly realize that they cannot easily remain friends because they live in opposite directions of the widow's house, which was about 20 miles away for each of them, and 40 miles from each other's houses. Both of their families knew the deceased, Percy, and wanted to pay their respects.

The story picks up again about 10 years later. Adeline, the widow is having an estate sale and many people come to try to help her out, including both Levi and Mary, with some of their family. They discover that Adeline must be having financial issues, and Levi is elected to go help the widow with some house repairs. Mary noticed that Adeline must be lonely, Percy and Adeline never had children, and decides to go visit with her, and maybe take the older woman for a buggy ride or to the store. She and Levi start meeting their on Saturdays, and the older woman is very appreciative. She makes them lunch. A somewhat distant relative of Percy, Natalie comes by to check on Adeline as well. She was urged to visit by her mother, who wanted an inheritance for her daughter, but Natalie only agrees because the older lady reminds her of her beloved grandmother that has passed away. The 3 young adults strike up a somewhat unlikely friendship, but each enjoy spending time with and helping the widow.

It's a beautiful story showing how being selfless can have wonderful paybacks.

This book is why I love book club. I would have never picked this book up on my own but I loved it! Like it’s the kind of light reading I need sometimes. Even when it got kind of heavy and sad I still knew it would have a happy ending. And no stupid sex scene like most books these days. And still scandalous things. I just loved it haha. Totally recommend and will probably read more of them when I need happy stuff.

Hearts in Harmony is a beautiful beginning for An Amish Journey series by Beth Wiseman. This unique story brought two young Amish children, Levi and Mary, together at a funeral eight years prior to the current setting. Levi and Mary had a secret from the day of the funeral for Mr. Percy Collins. This contemporary Amish story set in Indiana is filled with a unique friendship with Mrs. Adeline Collins when they assist her later in life. Adeline, Levi and Mary form a friendship and become family along with Natalie, a cousin to Percy. There’s so much to gain from this story with Levi and Mary living in opposite Old Order communities and what was allowed. The author has written some personal experiences into this story.

I borrowed this book from our library, thus a review was not required. I've just shared my own thoughts. I’m looking forward to reading Natalie’s journey in Listening to Love, book in the An Amish Journey series.

I love this first book in An Amish Journey series! It is full of new twists on the Amish lifestyle. There is romance, music (forbidden music, in fact), illness, care and respect for the elderly, and interest between Amish and Englisch people. I felt like Beth Wiseman introduced some topics in her book which are unique to Amish fiction and it was refreshing to read.
I highly recommend this book and am eagerly anticipating the second book in the series. Those who enjoy Christian and/or Amish fiction are sure to love this book.

The start of a new series is something I look forward to. There is such potential. Hearts in Harmony is a lovely story about family. Not necessarily blood related family but family non the less. I loved the way the characters interacted and cared for each other. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series and seeing where the author takes these characters.

This was a cute, but different story. I liked how both main characters sort of challenged their amish way, at least in the beginning of the book. I liked how they didn't just buy into the reason that was provided to them by the elders, yet still respected their faith. This isn't something that is usually seen in the Amish books.

Hearts in Harmony has many good as well as many bad points. The good pretty much outweighs the bad but I’m still on the fence. Hearts in Harmony is the first in a new series by Beth Wiseman. It is highly possible my problems with the book are due to it being the first in the series; however, I have read many first in a series of books without these issues.
What I liked about this book:
1. I loved the plot of two Amish young adults and one English young adult helping an older woman in need. I really adored the characters of Adeline, Mary, Levi and Natalie.
2. Wiseman knows how to write a book that draws you in and does not let go. I read this book in two days.
3. The Amish are pretty accurately described as well as their differences between districts.

What I did not Like about this book:
1. The character development of the main characters was lacking. The side stories did not have much if any development at all. I figure those plots will be handled in later books but these storylines were handled poorly.
2. Hearts in Harmony was strangely long yet with no real reason for the length. Wiseman forced some plotlines while ignoring others.
3. So much was implied and many assumptions had to be made for some of the decisions made and actions taken within the story.

I think many people will like this book but I am not sure I can recommend it.

I loved reading about Mary Hershberger and Levi Shetler… honestly, I worried a bit over how Levi would figure out how to live with his desire to play an instrument that wasn’t allowed by his church rules. And if Mary would just make things worse if she encouraged him —or supported him in his determination to continue to play.

And if I reveal what happens, I’ll spoil the story for you, so I won’t say anything more about it, except that I was delighted with Ms. Wiseman's solution… and the rest of the story.

Don’t miss this wonderful beginning of a great series!

Happy Reading!

This is probably between 3.5 stars and 4 stars for me. Since it's closer to a 4 than to a 3, on sites that only have full star ratings, it will show as a 4.

The book covers quite a bit of area: why is music outside of a proscribed area prohibited by the Ordnung?; helping those in need; family (both biological and created); unplanned pregnancy; Amish life vs. English life (life outside the Amish community); romance--just to name a few.

Yes, there is romance (between Levi and Mary) but it isn't the main focus of the book. I think the main focus of the book is how Adeline brings everyone together and how their lives change because of it.

I think Mary and Levi both went into it without wanting much in return. Natalie--I don't think she personally wanted anything from Adeline but her mother was hoping to get something.

Both Levi and Mary haven't joined church yet. Levi feels a pull toward the piano, but instruments of any kind are prohibited in his district. Mary has a personal radio that she uses to listen to inspirational songs--not totally prohibited for non-church members in her district. Both question why their Ordnungs only allow certain songs (and no instruments). Personally, I don't think either one gets a very good answer--though Levi's bishop does try. Eventually, they both decide to give up their respective music.

I liked the family atmosphere that developed between the 4. I also liked that the families donate items that Adeline needs.

I suspected that Adeline was going to change her will before it was revealed. I didn't guess correctly how she changed it though--and I didn't guess what Mary and Levi planned to do for Natalie.

I do wonder what will happen between Levi's brother Lucas (Amish) and Natalie (not Amish). I know some Amish districts do allow higher education if it will benefit the whole community (Veterinarians, Doctors, Nurses, etc.) so it is possible that Natalie would be allowed to continue with her vet studies even if she became Amish or that she could become Amish after schooling and still be allowed to practice her career. It's also possible that Lucas could leave his stricter district for one more permissive or leave the Amish community altogether.

I'm also not sure I approve of how Lydia's and Samuel's unplanned pregnancy was handled. I do hope that they figure out a way to love each other and that Lydia doesn't hold a grudge against him for being "forced" to marry him by her family. I do think that it is important to have people recognize the consequences for their actions, but I do wonder if it might have been better to have the two counseled a bit before the marriage took place or at least have a married woman/mother talk to Lydia (I'd say her own mother but given the tension, perhaps she wouldn't have listened to her own mother.)

Beth Wiseman has long been one of my favorite Amish fiction authors, and after reading the first book in the Amish Journeys series, I know that I have discovered a wonderful collection of new-to-me stories. Hearts in Harmony was an endearing novel about caring for others, even if they’re outside our normal circle.

There were multiple characters in this first story which is standard fare with large Amish families. While not explained in too many details, there is a noticeable difference between Mary and Levi’s districts which affects how their families live and work. I felt bad for both of them when they didn’t want the other person to meet their families. Levi is ashamed of how primitive his family lives, while Mary is embarrassed about a situation that involves her sister.

In spite of their differences, they (along with another character named Natalie) are able to come together to care for an aging English woman, Adeline. I loved this part of the story so much because too often, the elderly don’t get as much of our time and attention as they should until it’s too late. We often take them for granted. In the case of Adeline’s character, she begins to have obvious issues with her speech, memory, and general health. It takes all three of them to make sure she gets the care she needs.

This tenderhearted story has the happy and the sad in equal measures, and I won’t lie by saying you might shed a tear or two before it’s all said and done. I love that there is some exploration into music and what is/isn’t acceptable in the Amish culture, but that isn’t the primary focus of the book. Amish fiction can easily become a stale backdrop for any story, but this author consistently writes fresh and unique stories for her readers. I’m excited to read the next book in the series to see what unfolds for Natalie.

I adored this story. I enjoy stories set around music, and this was extra intriguing because music is forbidden in the Amish world. I couldn't wait to see how this would play out.

Levi and Mary live in different districts. Levi's is much stricter than Mary's, but both districts don't allow music - and music is something they both love. They both end up helping out a widow who lives right in the middle of both their districts. They start to get to know each other every Saturday as they help the widow out. Each is struggling with different family issues, and they enjoy their Saturdays together.
The widow, Adeline, who is not Amish, has a piano that Levi is drawn to, and Mary loves to hear Levi play, singing along to his music. But is their love of music enough of a reason to leave the world they love?

I just loved the chemistry between Mary and Levi. I also loved the friendship that built between Mary, Levi and Adeline, and also Natalie, a relative of Adeline's who starts to visit.
I wasn't sure how the ending was going to play out, whether they were going to chose music or not, but I think Beth Wiseman did it perfectly.

It was a sweet, clean romance that warmed my heart. It was a great start to this series, and I can't wait to read more. I highly recommend it to readers of Amish fiction.

A beautiful written story of friendship, love ,family, trust and community that we need to take care of the sick & elderly. or any one in need . I loved how is started out when Levi and Mary meet as young children and meet up later to find out they both had a talent that they couldn't use because of the Amish ways But did use it to help a elderly sick lady find peace while she was sick & dying .. But at the end they knew God had sent it to them just to help the elderly lady and they had agreed after she passed they would no longer use it . A Great read could not put it down . Thank you Beth Wiseman for being a great author and sharing your work with us . .

This was an enjoyable book. I loved all the characters meeting together at the lady's house. It was a nice friendship they all shared.

Natalie brought a lot of humor to the story.

I thought music would play a bigger part with the romance.

And I thought it was unbelievable that Levi just happens to know how to play piano. I mean yes, God can do anything. If He gives the gift of knowing how to play and instrument without any training so be it. I just think it was a convenient excuse for the book

Looking forward to the next book of the series
