Blackbird Mountain #2

Daughters of Northern Shores

Rate this book
Aven Norgaard understands courage. Orphaned within an Irish workhouse, then widowed at just nineteen, she voyaged to America where she was wooed and wed by Thor Norgaard, a Deaf man in rural Appalachia. That the Lord saw her along the winding journey and that Aven now carries Thor’s child are blessings beyond measure. Yet while Thor holds her heart, it is his younger brother and rival who haunts her memories. Haakon—whose selfish choices shattered her trust in him.

Having fled the farm after trying to take Aven as his own, Haakon sails on the North Atlantic ice trade where his soul is plagued with regrets that distance cannot heal. Not even the beautiful Norwegian woman he’s pursued can ease the torment. When the winds bear him home after four years away, Haakon finds the family on the brink of tragedy. A decades-old feud with the neighboring farm has wrenched them into the fiercest confrontation on Blackbird Mountain since the Civil War. Haakon’s cunning and strength hold the power to seal many fates, including Thor’s which is already at stake through a grave illness brought to him as the first prick of warfare.

Now Haakon faces the hardest choice of his life. One that shapes a battlefield where pride must be broken enough to be restored, and where a prodigal son may finally know the healing peace of surrender and the boundless gift of forgiveness. And when it comes to the woman he left behind in Norway, he just might discover that while his heart belongs to a daughter of the north, she’s been awaiting him on shores more distant than the land he’s fighting for.

Joanne Bischof does it again! There are tons of authors I like and many I love...but Joanne Bischof is consistently at the suuuuuuper love, top-of-the-list, all-time-fave level. And I absolutely adored this continuation of Thor, Aven and Haakon's story.

In a way, this book reminded me of Joanne's earlier series—the Cadence of Grace series—in that the hero is flawed in an obvious way. All the best characters have flaws, I think, but man, I so admire an author who can write a character with much more overt flaws and yet, still create someone lovable and sympathetic. That's Haakon to the core. His journey toward redemption touched my heart in a deep, deep way...

...as did the whole story. OF COURSE I loved every moment we got to spend with Thor again. 💗💗💗He's up there with Charlie Lionheart for me (um, if you don't know who Charlie Lionheart is, drop everything and read The Lady and the Lionheart right this very second!!). The setting was beautifully written and I always appreciate the pace of Joanne Bischof's books...the plot keeps moving and yet there's plenty of time to sink into each page. She lets her characters and scenes breathe and I love that.

So basically, this review is just one huge gush...but really, did I expect anything else? :)

'If God would but grant him another mercy. Should the outcome be dire, he prayed that God would welcome him to peace.'

Oh my. Joanne Bischof never fails to move me deeply with her books. She writes what I like to call heart-deep books. Stories so full and rich that my heart is totally involved.

We first fell in love with Aven and Thor in Sons of Blackbird Mountain and four years have passed and we find them here, married and wonderfully happy and blessedly awaiting the birth of their first child. Then Thor falls gravely ill and with this illness, a weight so heavy upon him, it comes nigh to crushing his spirit, such is the depth of this malady. In the midst of all this, Haakon returns home to the mountain after realizing he cannot be away any longer, the burden of needing to pursue his family's forgiveness for one act causing him increasing pain with each year that passes.

Haakon finds his family in a tenuous situation, facing a decades long feud with neighbors who are evil personified threatening to destroy them all. Haakon has a cunning strength and he decides that this needs to end once and for all, even if the cost is indeed dire to him. But who will emerge the victor? And who will perish? Will this prodigal son find the restoration his heart craves? And Haakon is also finding himself drawn back to northern shores for another reason. If he can only survive this feud.

Bischof must of a certainty carefully and prayerfully craft these characters, bringing them so very much to life in the pages that they spill over into the reader's heart and linger long after the book is finished. I was so incredibly moved during the reading of this book that it was stunning! This is a powerful book of forgiveness, healing and restoration. Bischof shines! Highly recommended.

aaaaAAAAHHHH I was so excited to have read this book! I love Joanne’s books- they’re so full of redemption and truth and humor and the romances are completely on point. 😀 A couple of months ago I read Sons of Blackbird Mountain, and I… didn’t love it because Haakon kind of ruined it for me. In short, his character felt sickening and disgusting to me, and after finishing the book I felt dirty from reading about him. That being said, I did enjoy reading the book overall and that made me intrigued about his journey of redemption and forgiveness from others.

Daughters of Northern Shores was quite good! Seeing Haakon again and getting re-acquainted with him didn’t really bother me too much, and I adored that you could see so much of God’s Hand involved in his story of redemption. (also um I adore adore adore the scenery of Norway- I absolutely love reading about icy cold freezing frigid placed for some reason and Joanne hit the nail on the head) It was also really fun seeing Avon again, too. A lot of characters rave about Thor, but I never really loved him that much so I was like “eh, good to see you too” and that was the end of that. xP

Overall, I really enjoyed this book! I feel like I wasn’t fully invested in the characters in the first place because I just didn’t love them all that much. This book was also definitely character-driven. So my general feelings towards this book: if I reread them at some point, I could honestly either really like it or start to really dislike it- I really feel like it could go either way. xD 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars.

Can this story not be finished? I want it to keep going.

As always, Joanne Bischof blew me away and captured my heart with her characters. Sometimes her books lean a little too sappy for my tastes, but with most of the main characters already married and redemption (not wooing) holding center stage, I really don't have any complaints to voice.

Aven and Thor are the cutest as a married couple. Haakon's (Hogan) character arc is an intricately woven journey of pain, regret, humility, and courage. Peter, though a minor character, was also a favorite for me.

One of the things I really appreciated about this book was the portrayal of both male and female courage. The author does a wonderful job of allowing men to be protective without tramping on their women, and of portraying women with backbones but without the kick-butt aura that often haunts fictional renderings of female capability. The women in this book are ones I can both relate to and desire to emulate.

If you liked Sons of Blackbird Mountain, you'll definitely like Daughters of Northern Shores. While I wouldn't recommend reading the second without the first, my favorite is the second.

Content warning for conservative readers ... this book is positively squeaky clean, but their are a few kisses between married people, references to intimacy outside of marriage, and implications of rape done by the rival clansmen.

It was such a pleasure to return to the Norgaard family in Daughters of Northern Shores, the second book of the Sons of Blackbird Mountain series. I fell in love with Thor, Haakon and Jorgan, their close friends and the women they love in that first book. My heart had also broken a little with the tearing of both friendship, trust and brotherly bonds, so it was with relief that I could continue this wonderful story, return to this little group - some now married, others with children and more on the way - and all with healing, justice and a future to live out.

Haakon has been away from his family and home for four years. Four years of traveling has yet to fill him with the peace he is searching for, so he reluctantly decides it is time to go home and make amends for the hurt he caused. On Blackbird Mountain, Aven and Thor have started their life together. Both face looming challenges of health, while the Sorrel men return from their exile and threaten the peace and safety that had fallen on the area in their absence.

I am so very in love - with this series, with these beloved characters and with Bischof’s writing. It is so easy to fall into this story and setting with her lyrical, almost poetic phrases that are unique and so aptly capture the feel and time of the book. It makes me want to use words such as harken and beloved. It makes Daughters of Northern Shores even more romantic, adventurous and charming.

While primarily a tale of family, forgiveness, love and friendship, Daughters of Northern Shores has ample amounts of adventure, nail-biting suspense, heart-breaking scenes and moments of peace and joy. It is perfectly well rounded and simply a delight to read. I cannot recommend this series highly enough and I think it is high time I track down copies of Bischof’s other titles.

The publishers provided an advanced readers copy of this book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.

Y'all! This book! I can't even think of the words to describe how I feel right now. This book is amazing. I love those Norgaard men! If I could be any fictional character, it would be Aven. Why? Thor! Swoon! I love these characters. This book with the back drop of the Appalachian mountains in 1895 has romance, action and a beautiful story of redemption. I loved Sons of Blackbird Mountain and I love this book too. I don't know if there will be any more after this book, but I certainly hope so. These characters have a place in my heart. I found myself laughing out loud and crying. This book has all the feels. Do yourself a favor and click that one button to buy. You won't regret it.

This book returned to the eloquent, poignant storytelling I’m used to seeing from Ms. Bischof. The most important thing about this book was that there was a beautiful and fitting resolution to the previous book’s shocking finale. There were other things to enjoy about this book too, such as its emotional, heartrending, redemptive qualities. This was exactly the sort of story I was in the mood for, and it was the precise type of story I love.

The familial ties were amazing. I especially enjoyed the brotherhood with its ups, downs, and bonds that bruise but don’t break. The turmoil and yearning for hope and healing kept me riveted and emotional throughout. The author’s trademark atmosphere was thick and saturating as ever, which I loved.

Content: alcohol, near-rape mentioned but not shown (carry-over from last book), mythology, taverns, barmaids, tobacco

Did you ever read a book that just feels like a mountain wind swept right through your soul and deposited hope there? That's what this book is. A stunningly written sequel to Sons of Blackbird Mountain, it takes up the threads from book one and weaves them with grit and beauty into the next chapter of the Norgaard brothers' lives. Joanne Bischof uses her gift of storytelling to venture into terrain that is both honest and hope-giving, both raw and redemptive. It is a tale of healing, growth, heartache, joy-- it is a tale of life, and it left my heart so very full.

We continue Haakon's journey (kind of like an odyssey!) as he really begins to settle in his spirit in this book 2 of the series. Revenge, resolution, and acceptance are themes in this story of the Norgaard brothers. Loved the touches of Viking lore! A satisfying resolution to this 2-book series! Thanks to the publisher for an early reader copy.

Daughters of Northern Shores is another outstanding epic by Joanne Bischof, one for my “best of the best” list, and impossible for me to adequately review with any words of mine. This novel is filled with exquisite romance, emotion, poignancy, suspense and adventure. Anything that Bischof writes is excellent, but for me, she shines best in Appalachian settings. My ancestors lived in the southern foothills of the Appalachians, so I’m well acquainted with the area and its people that she brings to life.

What author would ever be inspired to create a Deaf hero? Or a hero who was almost – not quite – but almost guilty of rape? But Thor and Aven’s romance is like no other, making me think that true, deep feelings can be better expressed without words. And as for Haakon, I have to question if I sometimes think that God’s ability to transform and restore has limits. This is what Bischof does so well, create overtly flawed characters and make you care deeply about them, yearning for their redemption with all your heart.

Book #1, Sons of Blackbird Mountain, concluded with what seemed to be an irreparable tear in relationships, but with elements reminiscent of the biblical Prodigal Son and even Jacob and Esau, Bischof creates a beautiful tale of repentance, forgiveness, grace and restoration. This story begins four years after Haakon’s flight, and is bookended with scenes involving a young Norwegian woman he met while at sea, one who casts great influence upon him…

Perhaps her insinuation for him to rise to a greater challenge had been a beseeching for him to thread wholeness and restitution into whatever wrong had sent him to the far side of the world.

The same four years have brought much happiness to Thor and Aven, but all that is in question with Haakon’s return and the reemergence of the family feud with the evil Sorrell family. This story is one that I wanted to read quickly, yet slowly so as to savor each word and nuance. The characters from this whole series will long live in my memory.

Very highly recommended.

Daughters of Northern Shores was a beautiful, captivating tale that, once again, reminded me of how much I love the characters from this series. I do highly recommend reading Sons of Blackbird Mountain before beginning this book.

The drastic change that has taken place in Haakon and the depth of the forgiveness he is seeking is clear when both stories are read in order. Other situations that occurred in book one have repurcussions, as well, in Daughters of Northern Shores. Both stories weave together a life on Blackbird Mountain that is not easily forgotten once the last page is turned.

It was such a joy to return to these characters and experience their love and laughter, along with their worries and trials. The author does such an amazing job of writing in a beautiful style that captures the pace of life on the mountain. I loved seeing what was happening in all of the brothers’ lives and witnessing again the deep love between Thor and Aven. This book left me feeling a deep happiness as I turned the last page. Sons of Blackbird Mountain and Daughters of Northern Shores are books that I plan to re-read many times in the future.

Ah, what to say about this sequel.. First of all, it was lovely to revisit these characters. Unfortunately I got very bored in the middle and had to force myself to finish. It didn’t have enough romance for me (totally personal preference, which I realize) and I was really hoping to see Haakon fall in love, but none of that was in the novel. I know the synopsis was outright about this being a redemption story for Haakon (which I’m happy about), but I feel like I was almost mislead by the title and cover since the “daughter of northern shores” they both refer to was basically only in the epilogue. All that to say, the novel had some sweet moments and I loved the epilogue- the author ended the Norgaard family story perfectly.

This story of a prodigal's journey home is told in the way only Joanne Bischof can. Her distinctive style continues to delight and entrance her fans, and her sensitivity in handling her deaf character is truly admirable. Be sure to read the Author's Note at the back of the book for the story behind the story.

Joanne has done it again! Daughters of the Northern Shores was everything I was hoping it would be and more. The characters were raw and real, the bond of brotherhood was inspiring, the themes of grace and forgiveness were beautiful, and the deep trust they all had in God through their trials is something I hope to have.

I also really enjoyed reading from Haakon’s point of view throughout the story and reading about his journey, both spiritually and physically. Overall, this book was absolutely amazing. I highly recommend it if historical fiction is something you enjoy!

Thanks to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson-FICTION for a digital galley in exchange for an honest review.

Although I was not familiar with the author or with this series, I found that it was very clear what was happening to all the characters. Daughters of Northern Shores is a Christian historical romance that centres on three estranged Norwegian brothers living in Virgina in the 19th century. Well, the youngest brother, Hakkon, is working on a ship while his two brothers, Jorgan and Thor, are on the family land with their wives. When Hakkon returns, will the brothers be able to reconcile their differences?

I feel a bit mixed when it comes to my feelings after finishing this story. As I mentioned in my first sentence, this was certainly a book that I felt easy to read. However, at about 70% I began to skim the pages and I never really felt connected to either Aven or Thor. Hakkon, on the other hand, was quite the fascinating character and his "prodigal son" role was much more interesting than the situations Aven and Thor found themselves in.

I am sure this book will be the answer to readers who loved the first book and it was a pleasure just to read a nice story.

I have come to expect a story from the pen of Joanne Bischof to be one that slices straight to the heart with its truth and tenderness. Daughters of Northern Shores is no exception. With its return of beloved characters and a message of trust at its center, it is one I will cherish upon recalling (and REREADING!).

With a balance of poignancy and vivid life, the story unfolds as one tentatively hopeful yet confronting pain, broken trust, trials, and jealousies of life. The rift left unsettled at the end of Sons of Blackbird Mountain is brought to light with Haakon’s wanderings and, eventually, steps to mend it. And oh, what a heart-trial that is!!! His prodigal journey is aided with wisdom from beloved women and the hesitant restoration of his brotherly relationships.

While Haakon seeks his place on Blackbird Mountain, Thor and Aven contend with fears and joys of their own. Again, Joanne Bischof handles subjects such as Thor’s Deafness, prejudice, and even childbirth with a delicate and reverent approach, honest when necessary and revelatory in manner with others. Reading this story is like witnessing the lives of the Norgaard family, being a part of their sorrows and sharing in their hope – most importantly, their trust in a Savior to see them through even the hardest of battles.

Daughters of Northern shores is a novel to treasure and one to make you think of the impact just one person can have. It is an encouraging story that reminds the reader to hope when there is no clear path ahead. And, to hold family and friends dear, always extending grace.

Thank you to Prism Book Tours and Netgalley for the review copy. This is my honest review.

I have been waiting for this book with much anticipation! It's book two in this series and you really need to read the first book (Sons of Blackbird Mountain) to appreciate this one. Joanne Bischof has such an incredible ability to draw me right into her stories and feel as if I am actually there. All of my senses become alert and aware. It's nuts. In the best of ways. Her characters feel solid, real. They pull on my emotions.

This book jumps right back into life in the Norgaard family, a handful of years after the first book ends. It was so good to back with this family and it was especially good to be a part of Haakon's journey- not just physically but emotionally and spiritually as well. His is a journey of healing, forgiving, proving and loving.

The story grew in intensity as all the pieced started coming together. Sometimes I feel like the Norgaard family just can't catch a break. Life isn't easy for them, especially with the enemies that taunt them, hunt them and want to destroy them. The little slivers of happiness were all the sweeter for it.

I wouldn't say that I loved this book quite as much as the first, but it was still so very good. I am such a Joanne Bischof fan. And, as always, I will be anxiously awaiting what comes next!

Content: violence, reference to drug and alcohol addiction, reference to sexual relations outside of marriage but no details and it is only lightly mentioned. Christian fiction elements of forgiveness, praying.

OH. MY. GOODNESS. Combined with book one, this should be a movie. Daughters of Northern Shores brings Joanne Bischof's characters from Sons of Blackbird Mountain full circle. As angry and broken-hearted as we all got with Haakon's behavior in book one, we are slowly gifted with the insight of his back story in book two, and we watch his progression into spiritual and personal maturity in this remarkable story of redemption and grace. Joanne has just rocketed to the top of my favorite authors list. If you are a writer of historicals or historical romance, you simply must read her work with an eye to craft.

This book officially releases in March 2019. I received an advanced readers copy of this book from NetGalley. Opinions expressed are my own.

Daughters of Northern Shores is Michael Phillips meets Thomas Hardy—lots of long lyrical descriptive passages. Beautiful, if you like that kind of thing. Unfortunately, high school English destroyed Hardy for me, and I'm still in recovery.

This is the fourth Joanne Bischof novel I've read. I didn't like the first—the heroine struck me as stupid, and her "hero" even more so. That was the first book in a trilogy, so I skipped the sequels. Then I read This Quiet Sky, a Young Adult novel that was The Fault in Our Stars in a historic US setting. It was outstanding. I even shed a tear or two, and that's rare for me.
And I’ve just read The Sons of Blackbird Mountain. I'd held off reading it because I'd been told it was one of those stories that was so good I'd want to read the sequel right away. That wasn't wrong. So I started reading Daughters of Northern Shores expecting great things.

But it didn't deliver for me. At the most basic level, the title didn't fit. I was expecting a novel about women—plural. Instead, I got a novel mostly focused on the Deaf Thor, his wife, Aven, and his returned prodigal brother, Haakon. There was only one daughter of the northern shore, and she appeared in one early chapter, then the last. Well, unless you consider Irish Aven a daughter of a northern shore. Given the Norgaard family is Norwegian, that's the kind of "north" I was expecting.

I read this straight after Sons of Blackbird Mountain. In hindsight, that was a mistake. There was a lot of backstory and repetition in the first half of Daughters, repetition made all the more noticeable (and less interesting) by the fact I'd only just finished Sons, so the details were all still clear in my head (not normal for me, I assure you. I read 150+ books a year, so do forget some of the details, especially when there is nine to twelve months between the books in a series).

Given the first book had shown Thor's ongoing struggle with alcohol, I thought this might detail Haakon's defeat of his addiction: the coco leaf. It did, but in a superficial manner. I found the plot slow and somewhat convoluted, the writing overly colourful (not quite purple, but getting close at times), and there was little development in any of the characters other than Haarkon.

Overall, Daughters of Nothern Shores failed to capture my interest, and certainly didn't live up to the promise of Sons of Blackbird Mountain.

Be still my heart and let me take a few deep breaths! Wow! In her beautiful prose, masterful author Joanne Bischof has done it again—penned another powerfully haunting, emotive read set in rural Appalachia.

Since this novel is the sequel to 'Sons of Blackbird Mountain', I must take care to avoid spoilers. Once again we are reunited with the lovely, compassionate Aven, who won the heart of tough, handsome Thor, a deaf mute with a heart of gold—a man who ends up fighting a battle much graver than his war with alcohol. Then there's the tormented brother, Haakon, whose once selfish choices continue to haunt Aven. Will he find redemption and love?...as both seem well beyond his grasp.

A resplendent tale of tremendous courage in the face of danger and a love that knows no bounds, I highly recommend 'Daughters of Northern Shores' Book 2 in the Blackbird Mountain series. Although the author does a great job of recapping, I would encourage reading 'Sons of Blackbird Mountain' Book 1 first. It's too awesome to miss and I feel as though the characters wouldn't have been nearly as endearing to me had I not read the books in sequence!

In the continuing saga of the Norgaard family, Joanne Bischof returns readers to Blackbird Mountain in the Virginia Appalachians. Y’all, this is a continuation of Sons of Blackbird Mountain so if you haven’t read that one, go get it now.

Four years after where Sons ends, readers are swept back into this family’s trials and joys. After four years of running, spending it on the sea, Haaken returns to Blackbird Mountain to make amends. Thor and Aven are married, but a threat hangs over their happily ever after.

I have to admit that the title and cover are a bit confusing to me as this book is really about the brothers. Thor and Haaken get two-thirds of the story with their POV’s and Aven the other third. However, those are minor.

With a slow build focusing on the relationship dynamic amongst this group—from the brother’s to Thor and Aven to the friends surrounding them—the story is engaging . And that building leads to some intensity near the end of the book that keep it going. Bischof’s beautiful prose, immersing readers in the setting, conflicts, and suspense that draw me to her books time and again.

I was so glad that I was able to visit Blackbird Mountain through this beautifully written sequel. In my opinion, one needs to read the Sons of Blackbird Mountain first to fully appreciate this stirring tale.

Bischof never fails to deliver an emotionally charged tale of characters that are broken, yet find strength in God and those they love. This is a story of the unbreakable bonds of family, told from the viewpoint of three characters: Thor, Aven and Haakon. In Daughters of Northern Shores, the readers are given a hero who is flawed, one that we might not be willing to give a second chance. Yet it is his journey of redemption, the gifts of grace and mercy, that give him the courage to fight for those he loves.

Bischof’s skill as a master storyteller is apparent in her ability to elicit strong emotional response from her readers. She sets a high standard for fictional heroes, men who are flawed, yet their strongest desire is to be trusted to care and protect those they love. It was with a sad heart that I closed the book, saying farewell to a cast of characters that have endeared themselves in my heart.

Daughters of Northern Shores is the sequel Sons of Blackbird Mountain (a book I LOVED!) and it was a good read. While I did enjoy the story, I just wish it had more of Haakon's story…there wasn't enough of his time spent away.

I loved the characters. I really felt for Thor because of what happened to him in this book (won't say what) and it was emotional at times. Aven was a great character, yet again.

All in all, Daughters of Northern Shores was an enjoyable read. I loved the first book a little bit more, but still recommend this sequel.

I was so happy to return to Blackbird Mountain and the haven where Thor and Aven share such a tender and devoted love. Life isn't perfect there- it's full of peril with the Sorrels threatening trouble again and a mysterious sickness weakening Thor. I was glad that the story alternated to Haaken's point of view as well, seeing his journey of redemption as his regrets compel him to return home after four years to make amends. The writing is beautiful and evocative, not flowery, but gently and subtly painting a picture of the setting, relationships, and growing tension as the Norgaard's prepare again to fight for everything they hold dear. I loved seeing their family grow with the birth of Aven's first child and Haaken's unforgettable love. Highly recommend to fans of historical fiction and sweet romance!

I was honored to have the opportunity to read this book before its release. And boy, if I thought the first book was amazing, this one really exceeded my expectations.

“Daughters of Northern Shores” picks up 4 years after the end of “Sons of Blackbird Mountain”. We learn that much has been changing in the lives of Aven, Thor and the rest of the Norgaard family, especially with Haakan, who has been at sea. Each of their hearts went under much refining as the story unfolded.

This story dives deep into the beauty and hope in forgiveness and trust. Joanne really took her writing to a whole new level with this book as well, adding a bit of suspense and action packed scenes. I enjoyed this story so much and I cannot wait to see what she has in store for these characters next!
