Glory Road

Rate this book
Written in Lauren Denton's signature Southern style, Glory Road tells the story of three generations of women navigating the uncertain pathways of their hearts during a summer that promises to bring change--whether they're ready for it or not.

At thirty-eight, garden shop owner Jessie McBride thinks her chances for romance are years behind her and, after her failed marriage, she's fine with that. She lives contentedly with her fiery mother and her quiet, headstrong daughter. But the unexpected arrival of two men on Glory Road make her question if she's really happy with the status quo. Handsome, wealthy Sumner Tate asks her to arrange flowers for his daughter's wedding, and Jessie finds herself drawn to his continued attention. And Ben Bradley, her lingering what-could-have-been from high school days who's known her better than anyone and whom she hasn't seen in years, moves back to the red dirt road. Jessie finds her heart being pulled in directions she never expected.

Meanwhile, Jessie's fourteen-year-old daughter, Evan, is approaching the start of high school and trying to navigate a new world of identity and emotions--particularly as they relate to the cute new guy who's moved in just down the road. At the same time, Jessie's mother, Gus, increasingly finds herself forgetful and faces a potentially frightening future.

As all three women navigate the uncertain paths of their hearts and futures, one summer promises to bring change--whether they're ready for it or not.

Glory Road by Lauren K. Denton is a 2019 Thomas Nelson publication.

A sweet and gentle southern story about family and second chances.

Jessie McBride is content with her life as it is. She owns a garden shop, is raising her non-conformist daughter, Evan, and is trying to manage her headstrong mother, Gus. The thought of romance has long since left the arena, and Jessie is just fine with that.

But a few life altering changes occur shaking up Jessie’s quiet and peaceful life. First, wealthy and successful Sumner Tate asks Jessie to do the flowers for his daughter’s wedding. Reluctant at first, Jessie is swayed by Sumner’s smooth and easy- going charm. However, she is knocked for loop when her old friend, Ben returns home with his teenage son in tow. Her old feelings for Ben rush to the surface, but rumor has it, Ben as girlfriend living in another city.

This is my first book by Lauren K. Denton, and I must say I very much enjoyed this charming story. Life is full of change- some good, some bad, some scary, some sad. This story touches on all those things, but the tone is pleasant, never too heavy, despite the seriousness of the subject matter at times. The romance is clean, with just a small dollop of angst. The theme is centered around a mature, and deep abiding love, which was beautiful and felt very authentic.

I loved all the characters, the setting, the gardening tips included at the beginning of each chapter and the humor injected along the way. Gus nearly steals the show a time or two and was the character I formed a real attachment to. But, the real cherry on the cake was that adorable conclusion!

This is just one of those truly lovely stories that rewards the reader for their time with a spirit boost, a warm feeling of contentment and hope.

Another charming southern story from Lauren Denton! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Jessie McBride is in her late 30s, a garden shop owner, and divorced when she thinks romance is not in the cards for her. She has a willful daughter and a brazen mother, and they are all she needs.

Two handsome men move to the area, and now Jessie’s interest is piqued. Sumner Tate’s daughter is getting married, and he asks Jessie to arrange her flowers. Ben Bradley is an old question mark from high school.

Also challenging is that Evan, Jessie’s daughter, is about to start high school and has her own mixed emotions about boys and relationships. On top of that, Gus, Jessie’s mother, is becoming more forgetful.

Something will change this summer, maybe multiple things? How will these women weather the storm together?

Lauren Denton writes charming southern stories. There’s plenty of love and an atmospheric setting. Delightful storytelling and likable characters take the center stage. Smooth writing, brilliant characters, and the red dirt road draw you completely into this story.

Glory Road is another wonderfully enriching and huggable story from Lauren Denton!

I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

This is a fine piece of southern fiction! While reading this I had a comforting feeling of home in the best possible sense. You could feel the love in this book - of family, friends, and the community. Memories of a simpler time came over me and I remembered sitting on the porch shelling peas, pulling weeds in the garden, making supper with Mom.

There are changes happening in the lives of the three generations of women in this book: the grandmother, Gus, who is gradually losing her memory; Gus's daughter, Jessie, who must decide how much risk she is willing to take - in business and in love; and Evan who is on the brink of adulthood and navigating those treacherous teenage years. The story is told from the point of view of these three women. The chapters are each introduced with quotes from gardening books and the quotes are relatable to what is happening in the lives of the women.

The writing flowed easily and the characters were well detailed. I could picture the surroundings of Glory Road - the Ice Box, the country road, the quiet. This is a wonderful, positive book and I truly loved it!

Thanks so much to Lauren K. Denton and Thomas Nelson--FICTION through Netgalley for an advance copy.

I really enjoy southern fiction. And I need to say Denton has done it proud y'all are going to enjoy this. Grab a mason jar full of some sweet tea and kick back on the front porch because this is a good read. The characters were fun getting to know, and Denton throw in a little romance for fun. I can't wait to read her next book.

Jessie McBride runs her own garden shop called Twig, it’s next door to her yellow house, and she has a teenage daughter Evan. She lives on Glory Road, near Perry a small town in South Alabama, and she's not a Southern belle. She’s casual, not a fancy person, she likes growing plants, walking bare foot, and eating Gus’s famous peach cobbler.

Jessie’s divorced, her marriage to dentist Chris didn’t work out, and ten years later she’s still single. Sumner Tate's a wealthy business man, he wants Jessie to organize his daughter Olivia’s wedding flowers, and she’s extremely flattered. He’s a handsome man, he would like to take things further, and something is holding Jessie back from starting a relationship with him.

Ben Bradley is back in town, he lives on Glory Road, her best friend and the boy she had conflicting feelings for in high school. She always wonders what might have happened, if she had kept in contact with Ben, told him how she felt and made different choices. Now they both have teenage children, attending the same school and Ben’s dating his ex.

Jessie’s a busy mother, she’s raising Evan on her own, with help from her mum Gus, and she’s concerned about her mother’s health. Her memory isn’t as sharp as it used to be, Gus wants Jessie to enjoy life, and you don’t know what might be waiting for you around the next bend in the road?

Glory Road is a wonderful story about three generations of McBride women, all three have their little quirky ways, I liked Jessie, Gus and Evan and how much they loved and supported each other. Lauren K. Denton writes amazing books set in the American South, I also have read The One You're With, I enjoyed them both, thanks to NetGalley for my copy, and four stars from me.

I adore this author and have absolutely loved all 3 of her books. Glory Road is the perfect mix of Southern small town charm, motherhood, emotional romance (chaste - no steam!), gardening, and taking care of an aging parent. Denton's writing is so atmospheric and this setting is one I will remember for a long long time. I just want to sink into the worlds she creates and burrow in. Oh, and this cover? GORGEOUS.

NOTE: This book is published by Thomas Nelson which is typically a Christian publisher but this book does not have much if any religious content.

Almost ten years after her husband’s affair caused her to return to South Alabama, Jessie McBride has establishes Twig – a garden shop and achieved a measure of stability. She lives near to her mother and has a good relationship with her and also with her fourteen year old daughter Evan. But then two men come into Jessie’s life. One, Sumner Tate, is seeking flowers for his only daughter’s wedding. But maybe he wants more than just flowers? The other is Ben Bradley, someone she has known since childhood and had feelings for during high school. But for various reasons, nothing ever came of it, except friendship. Then even that dissolved. Meanwhile Jessie’s mother Gus, is suffering increasing memory lapses that hint at a frightening future, especially given what Gus already knows. One summer will change many things for Gus, Ella and Evan. Maybe in more ways than any of them ever expected.
I pounced on this book when I saw it in the library as I remembered how I had loved an earlier book by this author. This one certainly did not disappoint either. I loved Glory Road from the first page. It was like snuggling down under a lovely warm quilt. Much of the book is told from Jessie’s point of view but some chapters also give insights into what Evan and Gus are experiencing thinking and feeling. One of the things I loved about this book was the relationships between the three generations. Especially the relationship between Evan and her mother. It is so refreshing to find a book where the teenage daughter and mother actually get along well and like each other. So many books these days seem to focus on the negatives of mother and daughter relationships.
Jessie, Gus and Evan are all likable characters. Gus is a real live wire character and certainly adds moments of humour with her comments and ways. The men, Sumner, Ben, Ben’s teenage son nick and Harvis a similar age to Gus are all well drawn too.
Each chapter starts with a little gardening hint. They provide an added interest. I settled into this book from the start and simply wanted to nothing to disturb me so I could keep reading. Although it doesn’t shy away from serious issues, it is just such a gentle, pleasurable read. A book that leaves you feeling good about life. A book of family, relationships and love this delightful read had me all the way sharing every emotion. A lovely piece of Southern fiction that I highly recommend.

Read this for a book club. Decent read, I appreciated the parts about Gus's struggle with losing her memory and the family's response to that.
Unfortunately I didn't like Jessie very much. I thought her attitudes toward her ex were pretty awful and not providing Evan with the opportunity or encouragement to have a relationship with her dad really grated on me. It wasn't like the dad did anything to Evan or was a bad father, he cheated. I think my feelings about that situation really colored the rest of my reading experience of this book.
Overall it was pretty predictable, I called the ending although I was hoping for a surprising resolution.
That said, the worthwhile parts were definitely the relationships between mothers and daughters (and grandmother/granddaughter) and how they all came together to support one another.

This is a delightful and charming story that takes place in the south on Glory Road. It is told from the perspectives of three women of three different generations. It’s about family, friendships and love. There is also an underlying theme of plants and gardens. If you’re in the mood for a heartwarming, character driven, feel good women’s fiction, this is your book! I received an ARC from publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Thanks to #NetGalley #ThomasNelsonPublishers for my free copy of #GloryRoad by Lauren K. Denton in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Fans of romance, southern settings, mother/daughter themes, gardening, and women's fiction will want to snatch up a copy of this endearing and quaint small town story.

Glory Road focuses on three generations of women from the same family during one summer of their lives on Glory Road as they build trusting and loving relationships with each other and also forge the path of their individual lives and future. Although some characters are stereotypical, the main characters are well developed and seem real. We are able to empathize with the grandmother's fears and feelings of distress as she experiences episodes of dementia; we understand the pressure Jessie feels as a single, working, entrepreneurial mom; and we remember how it felt to be a teenager through the experiences of fourteen-year-old Evan.

Especially captivating in this story is the atmospheric, southern, rural setting. We imagine swinging in the creaky porch swing, walking down the dusty country road (Glory Road), and we can hear the buzz of insects. Adding to the setting, the author inserts lovely, inspirational, and advice laden gardening quotes at the beginning of each chapter (reminding me of what we learned about the meaning of flowers in The Language of Flowers). For example, "Zinnias are traditionally a happy flower, and you can't go wrong offering a loved one a bouquet of brightly colored zinnias. In particular, the scarlet zinnia signifies constancy or steadfastness. Blue Hyacinths have a similar meaning, and the two flowers together would make a striking pair." (Warren Elliott, The Secret Life of Flowers) These thoughtful quotes set the mood for the chapter and enhance the southern setting and are completely congruent with Jessie's garden shop, The Twig. I appreciate the author's effort in finding unique and thematic quotes.

Poignant themes include facing difficult transitions, being true to yourself, supporting family, coming home, and reconciliation.

Recommended for readers who appreciate romantic and inspirational family stories, for fans of southern settings, rural lifestyle and gardening, and for those looking for a gentle read (no violence, offensive language, or steamy romance). It would be a good book club selection and a great choice for spring/summer porch reading. If you read and enjoyed Hurricane Season by Denton, I predict that you will also enjoy Glory Road.

Southern fiction is a such a fun genre for me to read. I had never really differentiated books set in regional places, until I was in college and read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. It was then that I fell in love with Southern fiction.

It was very clear that books set in the South have a unique voice all their own and I simply can’t get enough. Whether it’s Southern Gothic (my absolute fav) or Southern romance, Southern beach reads, or Southern Women’s Fiction—I simply love it all, except there just aren’t a ton of books to pick from like there are for larger genres like historical fiction for example.

So that said, when this book came up for review, I was thrilled to read it! The author is a new to me author, but the fact that it’s set in the South and labeled Southern Romance just made me all the more excited to give it a shot!

While this book is a romance, I would argue that it’s more complexed than that and more of a women’s fiction book with romantic interests as a secondary focus. I liked this approach and felt that the mother/daughter relationship focus was tender, interesting and heart warming. One of the things that I loved the most about the relationships in this book (all of them) was that for the most part they were healthy and positive. The romances played second fiddle so to speak but I found that the romances were well done, believable, sweet, and swoon worthy and also healthy.

This book was very atmospheric and I adored that! I am not from the South, I have never visited the South (beyond the odd airport or two) so I have no experience beyond books and movies when it comes to the South. But for me that region holds a very romanticized idealistic small town feel and this book capitalized on that feeling. I loved the own descriptions and everything about this setting radiated Southern charm.

I throughly enjoyed reading this novel each moment I could. It was refreshing, charming, and interesting. While this novel does have some Christian elements to it, the focus is truly on the lives of the three women characters and the men that come into their lives. It was a wonderful read and I would highly recommend this book to moms/daughters this spring, especially just in time for Mother’s Day!

Southern charm abounds on Glory Road. Three generations of women: Evan, Jessie and Gus are central to the novel and their voices speak in turn by chapter. Jesse returned home to Glory Road in Alabama. She left behind an ugly divorce and starts over with her daughter. Jesse owns a garden shop and is completely comfortable spending her time with her hands in the dirt.

Each female is going through their own unique struggle while at the same time assisting the other two. The males in the novel exhibit chivalry and charm.

My favorite quote came from Gus (Augustus)..."And just like that, something snapped into place, like in baking when I added a little of this and a little of that and it was not quite right, but then one more dash of salt or cinnamon or nutmeg did the trick and I tasted it and it was perfect goodness. As if the right combination of spices had been there all along, waiting for me to stumble on it."

It was a delight to spend time with Evan, Jessie and Gus on Glory Road. This is my first novel by the author and I look forward to reading her prior two novels.

My gratitude to publisher Thomas Nelson for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

I have to say I've developed an unexpected fondness for Southern style fiction and Glory Road tickled my fancy in so many ways.

First off, the unhurried approach to the storytelling made me feel like I'd wandered up onto the McBride's front porch in the middle of a gab session and was invited to sit a spell. Nothing is rushed...these Southern ladies know the power of a pregnant pause and how to measure their words for the most emphasis. And the way they can turn a phrase! "Lanky as a coat hanger!" It's like they have their own secret language, painting bold images that stir a reader's senses to the point she can visualize every scene.

And I loved the multi-generational perspectives in this novel. We get three stories, really, as we live out a summer of change in the lives of the McBride women. Three points of view, each with its own distinct flavour. Gus on the cusp of a frightening diagnosis, Jessie on the verge of discovering that love can find her the second time round and Evan so eager to leave childhood behind but not quite ready for the complications womanhood brings. Their stories are pertinent and memorable, and the way they draw strength and comfort from one another is inspiring. Relationships aren't perfect, families can be dysfunctional but home is still a place of safety and love.

I listened to the audible version and Devon O'Day's narration really enhanced my reading...er, listening...enjoyment. She captured the essence of each of the McBride women and I could hear the pleasure in her voice -- like she was just as delighted with these ladies as I was.

Please note: I have not categorized this novel as Christian Fiction even though the publisher is Thomas Nelson. It is beautifully written and definitely a clean read, but the lack of an inspirational thread was disappointing.

3 "And in a way, we were." Stars

This slow burning, familial book tells 3 separate stories of 3 generations of women who live in the country off an old red dirt road in Alabama. It's a testament to life in the south, of mistakes made and on-going battles faced. It's complex relationships, a little romance, and a lot of growing. I found the story charming and full of promise just not fully consuming.

It seems as all three women, two grown and one teenager, are at a crossroads of major life decisions in their sleepy little world. But on the surface they're consistently reminded of the strength they each hold no matter the trials through the love and deep respect they hold for each other.

Glory Road falls under general women's fiction for me. It's told from a 3 separate points of view and encapsulates the vulnerabilities, pride, and strength in each of the female characters. It holds a spark here and there of romance but in not in a way that they romance dominates the story or the characters. I really enjoyed it and fans of women's fiction will too.

I’m not one to “gush” over a story, but an exception simply must be made for Glory Road by Lauren K. Denton. Long on my radar of authors to try, I’m berating myself for waiting until now to discover this incredible author. Women’s fiction, especially books with southern settings, is my favorite genre. This is Denton’s area of expertise, and she can hold her own with any author I’ve read in the general market. Actually better when you consider that the writing is clean. Glory Road is a captivating and poignant story, a “best of the best” read for me.

Glory Road is rich in all the essentials – vivid imagery, lyrical prose, complex characters, and a storyline that captured my emotions from the first page and never let go. The fact that I live in the southeast and have relatives who live in areas similar to the setting of Perry, Alabama (15 miles northwest of Mobile) makes the story so very relatable. This description of Jessie’s view from her home is so peaceful … “Long sweeps of wildflowers in the summer, fields dotted with cows and horses, straight rows of corn and cotton and soybeans lining the roads.”

How does an author convey an ambience replete with aromas that you can literally smell? I don’t know, but Denton certainly does this – from freshly-shelled peas and juicy cobblers, to sun-warmed dirt and that just-before-the-rain scent in the air. Small-town southern living is slower paced, and that’s the tone of this novel, yet it is never boring; every sentence begs to be savored.

The story itself revolves around three generations of McBride family women, and dealing with change in their lives. I easily connected with each one – Jessie, who returned home to Perry with her young daughter after going through a divorce; Evan, now a well-grounded young lady about to start high school; and Jessie’s mother, Gus, beginning to experience bouts of forgetfulness. These characters have depth and the relationships between them are complex. Delightful romantic elements relating to all three are secondary, yet key to the overall story.

Spiritual themes are subtle, but very much present. Gardening quotes from various sources are creatively placed at the beginning of each chapter, beautifully setting the mood and conveying the strong link between the care and nurturing of plants to our spiritual lives. I loved the outspoken wisdom in these words from Gus … “Sometimes God puts things in our paths for a reason. Best to sit up and pay attention.”

Glory Road comes to a heartwarming, fulfilling conclusion; these characters will forever linger in my thoughts. Very highly recommended.

"Just ahead, the glow from my little yellow house beckoned. I’d always loved the way houses looked at night when darkness surrounded them, yet inside everything was bright and clear. That was how my house appeared as I approached it. Everything inside it ablaze with life. I took a deep breath, shaking off thoughts of what might have been, and crossed the yard toward home."

Glory Road. GLORY ROAD. GLORY. FLIPPIN. ROAD. *all the heart eyes*

Okay, now that we've gotten that out of the way, let me just say wow I love this book! Can you tell? I bet you can tell 😂 ohhh man *this* is the southern fiction I craveeeeeee. I felt every drop of sweat, heard every cicada, smelled every plant. I watched the storm clouds roll in and I effortlessly sped by as I took my nightly run down the red dirt road. I was totally immersed in this book, y'all! I want to read it all over again!

I loved literally every part of this story, but I'll highlight just one - the incredible care and respect for the older generation. The way Jessie cared for her Mama had me in tears. Another facet of true southern living - giving dignity and honor to those that have come before us. This was done so well and so naturally I felt like I was reading about my own family 👏 yes, yes, yes. Pick it up if you haven't already. You will NOT be disappointed.

'Sometimes God puts things in our paths for a reason. Best to sit up and pay attention.'

Lauren K. Denton writes stories with great southern charm and this one is so moving. Perry, Alabama is home once again to Jessie McBride when she returns after her husband's affair and her divorce. Along with her 14 year old daughter, Evan, settles down in her hometown. She opens a garden shop next door to her house and across a field from her widowed mother, Gus. Jessie is happy, but when her old maybe could have been boyfriend from high school moves back to Glory Road with his teenage son, her heart gets pulled in a new direction. Add to that a wealthy businessman asking her to do flowers for his daughter's huge wedding and combined with his lingering attentions to her, Jessie just is not sure which direction her life is heading. Her mama, Gus, has been having some frequent and surprisingly odd memory losses and all their futures look uncertain.

Told in three points of view, from Gus, to Jessie, to Evan, this book is deeply moving on all fronts. Set against the backdrop of a red Southern dirt road, two women learn that love is never to be passed by and one teenager learns that the women she follows are pretty amazing. I loved everything about this book.

'I think you marry the one who, when everything else is stripped away---money, job, arguments, disagreements--he's still the one you'd want to sit with on the porch and...just...do nothing. Or do anything. Pick the one who matters more than all the stuff of life.'

4.5 stars. This book should come with kleenex, for the last 15-20% of the story. Sweet, heartwarming, heart grabbing feel good and so what I needed. Felt in a blah book rut of the same ole stuff and I just happened to see this cover and it drew me in. My gratitude to the book gods.

Slow to start, but so is the way of life in the South. But so worth the read if you stick with it. Told in chapters by Jessie, her Mother/Gus, and Jessie's daughter/Evan. Wasn't sure at first what would be so interesting from this close knit group of 3 generations but its not long before I was invested in all of their lives.

Jessie has 2 love interests and I knew from the get go who I was rooting for. But this author kept me at the edge of my seat wanting and waiting, not sure how it would all work out. ;D You'll have to read to find out.

Feisty Gus will give you some grins and I loved Evan's groundedness (is that a word?) at 15 years old.

Part fiction, part romance and totally engaging. Will keep this author on my list to read more of in the near future.

This is the second book of hers I’ve enjoyed reading. One of my favorite paragraphs in the book was when her & her mama were having a conversation about the two men in her life. She said one felt like a hammock and the other a roller coaster. Her mama said, ‘well there’s your answer right there. Roller coasters have never been your thing. They make you throw up.’ Good southern charm and country living.
In the acknowledgments, she gives glory to our Heavenly Father.

This is the very first book that I have ever read by Lauren K. Denton, and I have to say, I am so glad that I got the opportunity to read it. Although Lauren has been on my radar for a little while, it often takes me a long time to get around to reading new authors (because I still have so many books left to read by authors who are already my favorites), so I wasn’t sure when I would get the chance to read one of her books. Let me tell you, I am so, so glad that I was presented with the chance to read Glory Road! I had no idea Lauren was such a fantastic author, and I am looking forward to reading many more of her novels in the future.
There’s just something about this story that pulls you in from the very beginning. It’s the quintessential picture of Southern, small-town life, and you just cannot help but immediately fall in love with Jessie, Evan, and Gus. Even the tone of this book speaks to the slow-moving
country life that the three of them live, ebbing and flowing like the river that flows through Sumner Tate’s backyard. From the first chapter, you feel dropped right into Perry, Alabama, onto Glory Road where life is the same and yet still ever changing.
As the story unfolded, I found myself completely wrapped up in everything that was happening, and I had no idea how it would all work out in the end by I was absolutely dying to know. Now, I used to read entire books in a day so the speed at which I read a story is not usually surprising, but
between school and work and everything else that is taking up my time I don’t often get a chance to finish novels very quickly anymore, but this one was the exception. I just couldn’t wait to find out how this story would end, so I found myself reading it at every opportunity I could (one of the benefits of having it on the Kindle app on my phone).
Then there was the ending. Oh, how I loved the way this story ended. How I wish I could tell you my favorite parts from the end, but I don’t want to spoil it. However, I have put some quotes on Goodreads, so if you’re ever there and you want to read some of my favorite parts, look up Glory Road. Absolutely everything about the ending of this novel was simply perfect, and I just know I’m going to read it again and again every chance I get.
I received an electronic copy of this book through the JustRead Publicity group in exchange for only my honest review. I was not given any incentives to give a positive review; every opinion expressed was my own.

"To fixing broken things."

A lovely sentiment perhaps,"but maybe our repair skills didn't extend to the brokenness that existed between the two of us". Is Jessie McBride truly convinced that the past is the past, and that some things can never be restored? She is so used to her quiet, familiar life on Glory Road; where she, her teen daughter, and her mother live protectively nestled just steps away from her popular local garden shop. Just takes the rumble of a familiar engine loosens the strings of predictability; perhaps forever or perhaps, never.

Such great characters invade this beautifully written story that bravely heralds the many seasons of life, love, and inevitable loss. A blossoming teen, an aging parent, a surprising suitor, and one who feels like coming home, all blend with a gentle authenticity that will paste its readers into life along the hot, dusty roads of southern Alabama; I loved the feel, I loved the fit, I loved the flow . . . between what could have been, what might have been, what should have been, and what might never have been . . . . except for one extra trip down Glory Road.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. The opinions stated are entirely my own.

After reading Hurricane Season I knew I had to read more by Lauren K. Denton. Y’all, as much as I enjoyed Hurricane Season I enjoyed this one even more.

I typically reserve 5 star ratings for books that are life-changing in some way but this one is so good it’s getting a 4.99 from me 🙌🏼 It may not be life-changing but it is incredible storytelling. I adored each character.

If you’ve got some time, get comfortable and let me tell you what I loved about this book 💁🏻‍♀️

Each chapter begins with gardening advice which doubles as life advice(I think humans and plants have a lot of the same basic needs), the characters are so real and relatable, Denton’s handling of love and marriage is right on(none of that fairytale “do what makes you happy” crap, true love may be beautiful but you have to get your fingernails in the dirt to keep it that way), the relationship between Jessie and her teenage daughter I can testify to because I’m in that season right now(time please slow down 😭) and let me just tell you that Alabama is highly underrated. Some of the prettiest places I’ve ever seen have been in Alabama and Denton brings that natural beauty to life here.

4.99/5 ⭐️-I absolutely loved this one!

Glory Road is one of those books where it's location is one of the strongest parts of the story. The setting was so perfectly described that I came away wishing that I lived on Glory Road. I could feel the heat in the summer and visualise the garden shop, the beautiful flowers, and tree-lined roads.

Told from three points of view, the writing flowed easily and the characters were well detailed and very likeable. Lauren K Denton's writing was charming and delightful. I was taken on an emotional journey over one summer with a family’s three generations of gritty women in this story of second chances, family bonds, and really good pie. There were a few whispers of romance in the novel but not in a way that the romance dominates the story or the characters.

This was a wonderful, positive book and I truly loved it! A well deserved five stars.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel, at my own request, from Thomas Nelson Fiction via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Her evocative storytelling will leave you mesmerized.
