This is a short story set before the original trilogy. In this one, we visit Lando along with L3 as Lando is running several schemes at once trying to earn a buck. He comes across a young princess (seem familiar) who ends up persuading him to do the right thing.

I think Lando is a complex character to write. He is a knave who will cheat to get ahead but deep down he ends up doing the right thing. I thought the author did a good job with her portrayal of the character. We see him having several schemes going at once and adapting when things go awry. And even when things don't go to plan he ends up doing the right thing and being a hero. As for the other characters including L3 there were fine and nothing stood out. Besides the correlation of a young princess persuading and guiding a scoundrel to walk the path of a hero. The difference is this one does not have the romantic element in the relationship. As for the adventure it could have used further development but this is a short story so it was probably difficult for the author to achieve this in a limited capacity.

Nothing really special here. It was a nice quick adventure with a character who really does not have much lore with him in it. I believe this is meant for children but it is perfectly serviceable for any fan of any age.

Very disappointed in this book. I am not even a big Lando fan, but even he deserves better than to be portrayed as a two bit con man at best, a grinning idiot with luck on his side at worst.

I have no problem introducing new characters into the Star Wars universe, but I hate having established legends completely up staged but these characters.

Lando comes across as a cape wearing pansy all style and no substance at all. He needs to be saved from every situation he gets himself into. In fact apart from his name on the cover to sell the book I really do not see the point of Lando even being in the book.

3.5 stars. A lightweight story of an early Lando-L3 escapade. Lando gets caught smuggling (what a surprise), and ends up getting coerced/convinced by the young princess of a planet to help her return a precious artifact (and energy source) to a planet past the Outer Rim.
L3 is properly sarcastic and annoyed at the troubles Lando puts her through. Lando's vain, sneaky, not willing to do anything without lots of $$ to compensate his efforts, which is totally in keeping with who he was characterized to be pre-Empire Strikes Back. I liked that the princess was genuinely surprised that Lando had over 40 capes! (I am too, but since he's a real clotheshorse, it's clearly critical to have just the right cape for every job.)

I love Star Wars and the Star Wars universe. I'm not a mega fan like some people but I still like it and enjoy it very much. It is something I share with my kids and family. So when this book came up for review I was excited. Since I read some excerpts from the book and liked them I was even more excited.

That being said... I really enjoyed it for the most part but towards the end it seemed to drag a bit. It almost seemed stuck. Which slowed down the book and the pace of it a bit.

Some of the characters came over flat especially if they were not main characters, but overall they were fun and easy to follow.

If you know Star wars you know the world and it was fun revisiting them.... the book also had some very awesome and fun illustration that I enjoyed.

The book is rather short (for me) with under 200 pages but that will make it the perfect size for some kids. But I think the book is pretty much for young and old if you enjoy Star Wars.

Overall fun great book.... though it has some slow moments.

I rate it 3★

Lando's Luck is a thoroughly adequate Star Wars adventure. It's got action, it's got a decent characterization of Lando, it's got new worlds and creatures and fun, POC characters. That said, it's not particularly deep and reads more like an hour long TV special than a real novel. The pacing isn't perfect and the twists are often predictable.

Still, Justina Ireland does a surprisingly decent job as a Star Wars first-timer. She tries to explore some of her character's motivations, particularly those of new addition to the universe, Rinetta, the princess of Hynestia. Ireland also introduces an unexpectedly video gamey conceit with the Architects and three mysterious globes. Expect to have to suspend some disbelief with that one. All told, I'm glad Lando's Luck was a quick read because it allowed me to enjoy the book exactly as long as it held my interest.

On the surface, this isn't a terrible book. The plot isn't bad, and Ireland is certainly in touch with Lando's persona. But... look, there's one part where a period is straight-up missing from the end of a sentence and another place where the phrase "malicious air" is used twice in the SAME PARAGRAPH. This book has a decent storyline and characters as well as pretty good visuals, but the sheer lack of editing at certain points is just insulting to the reader. I don't want Star Wars books, especially middle-grade ones, to become mass-produced and lazy like this.

3/5 stars.

Finally, a Lando book that’s actually worthy of the name. Billy Dee Williams brought such a suave flair to Lando that we were too busy falling in love to notice what a jerkwad he was, and few authors have managed to capture that mix of debonair and knavish that defines the character. Ireland gets Lando Calrissian spot on, though, and gives him ample opportunity to show off his carefree charm in this fast, fun adventure.

This is a fun middle grade story ostensibly about Lando and L-3, but actually equally about a new character called Rinetta, a princess trying to right a wrong regarding a stolen artifact needed to heal a friend’s home planet. I really liked Rinetta and thought she was a pretty decent character considering she’s brand new and in a middle grade book.

Lando doesn’t have much in the way of deep character development, but he’s faithfully written. I was a bit apprehensive about this book because L-3 can sometimes be really annoying, but I felt Justina Ireland did a great job portraying the spirit of her character but in a less obnoxious way. This story wouldn’t have been nearly as good in the hands of a less capable writer, but Ireland did a great job with it. Solid adventure story that I think most middle grade Star Wars readers would enjoy.

My main annoyance was just that I think the storytelling (“story-within-a-story”) gambit to frame the story they really want to tell has been used a bit too much in newer Star Wars books. It’s not especially creative anymore.

Won Hardcover ARC from BookishFirst.com!

I really enjoyed this middle grade book about Lando Calrissian. This was my first book by Justina Ireland. I'm not a *huge* Star Wars fan (that would be my husband) but I dabble. I dabble more in the kid-range things than the adult stuff. haha. I read this book in one sitting which is no huge accomplishment because it's only 168 pages. But it was also a really fun book! Lando thinks luck has nothing to do with anything until his luck literally runs out. He's caught smuggling and then is used for his ship by a clever 13-year-old princess with a heart of gold. Rinetta is princess of Hynestia and she finds out her mother is keeping a priceless life-giving artifact as payment to the Empire but her tutor, a Lynna, lives on the planet where this artifact was taken from and the planet and its people are dying. Turns out Lando, and his trusty first mate, L3-37 might have a bit of gold in his own heart. Can't wait to read more!

I don’t know why this is marketed as a story about Lando, when it is almost entirely about the princess, Rinetta, and how Lando helped her.

Also, this has the plot of a level in Spyro: Year of the Dragon, so. Meh? I didn’t hate it but it was very nothing.

I really enjoyed Lando’s Luck. Justina Ireland writing is as smooth as Lando. Ireland writes Lando just as he sounds in Solo. L3 is also spot on. Sometimes writers write L3’s dialogue too snarky. Not here. A fun, quick read that leads into the next book in the series. Look for my full review at skywalkingthroughneverland.com coming soon.

I am long term fan of the Star Wars Saga and was overjoyed 😄 when this book came out. My first impression was that it will be action packed from cover to cover. It will follow the life of the rebels and the troubles that they must overcome in a difficult time. The story will be enjoyable for all fans regardless of age as the story will be full of excitement. Although this was only a short glimpse into the novel I was enjoying it very much indeed. The story was full of descriptions and the was very enticing to the reader. It gave a great sense of mood and allowed the reader to get into the scene. I liked how it linked to the movies too and brought memories of the film back to me. Happy reading folks.

A fun short story about one of Lando's adventures during the Empire's rule.

With interesting characters and the conflict of restoration of a stolen artefact to its rightful owners, this book contemplates important issues of our world set in a galaxy far far away.

Probably closer to 2 stars for me but it gains a star for having Lando and L3...

I would be curious to have my daughter read this one and see if she likes it better than I do. Typically I enjoy the young readers Star Wars books just as much as the "adult" books but this one left me a little bit cold.

The plot is pretty predictable all along the way, Lando seems to be an afterthought to the story, L3 has almost no part at all. The new characters aren't all that memorable and the stakes never seem particularly high on the adventure. The framing story with Bazine is probably more intriguing in the end than the story that it frames.

By no means do I think this is a bad book (though it may sound so from this review) and I would be interested to see Ireland get more work in this galaxy but this particular tale was not my favorite of the young readers books.

I was so excited to receive this one from Bookishfirst. I love Star Wars and I loved this one. It was a awesome cover. Well written by and established author that I already enjoy. This was geared toward Middle Grade but I think it can be enjoyed by any age. And by Sci fi lovers or Star Wars Lovers.

This edition was a beautiful hardback book and it would be an great addition to anyone's Star Wars collector. Whether you are a Star Wars in general fan or if your favorite character is Lando you should give this book a shot.

Highly recommend for all ages and lovers of all genres. It was a fun, quick read. I enjoyed it, My eighteen year old loved it as well as my thirteen year old. This was a big hit at my house.

>>Can be read as a standalone. I have read 0 other Star Wars books. (But I plan on more by black/POC women)
>>Requires no previous Star Wars knowledge. I have watched 0 of the original trilogy on purpose, parts of the prequels, and sadly, none of the new ones. (The latter at least I plan on changing Soon(tm))
>>Clever.
>>Funny.
>>I love Justina Ireland!!!
>>Love the cover and few illustrations.
>>Contains Cheeky Droid Navigator, Do Right Adventuress Princess and her badass Assassin Queen mom, spaceship fighting, color-changing alien cat species with three tails and a quest to save the world, pay off debts, and stave off the Empire for another day.
>>And obvious Lando in all his GLORY. I will admit it still makes me do a double-take seeing Donald Glover as Lando. He's perfect, don't get me wrong, but I still have this moment of "I KNOW YOU! You belong somewhere else too!!".
>>I think even people who don't like or care about Lando will enjoy this. I think *this* story is more of what people were looking for in the Solo movie.

Notes from Reading:
>>"Forsythia stilled, and suddenly Lando was less certain that the gian cave monster wasn't a better option." - pg.29
>>"Lando only knew that the one time he'd joked about such a thing, she'd flown into a snit and refused to help him pilot the Falcon for nearly a week, stranding him on Tatooine, a miserable dustbin that he never wanted to return to again." -pg.109
>>"Zel sniffed. "You keep giving me guns but no one to shoot," she said, ears drooping a little as she made her way to the gun bays." -pg. 133
>>"Okay, we all like each other and we are all smart and beautiful. Still, I have five ships closing in fast." - pg.135

If you're a SWEU fan who is looking for a quick read, this won't disappoint. This issue is that this story revolves more around other characters than Lando, so I'm guessing the title was chosen solely to garnish interest. I would say Lando's appearances equates to probably 1/3 of the book, and when he is active, he's more interested in his cape, charisma and reputation than anything else.

It is true, however, about Lando's Luck. He is saved/rescued multiple times by either his crew or the other characters who happen to be looking for him or the Falcon while he is being captured or imprisoned.

Lando is portrayed as a criminal smuggler who is self-aware of his reputation and lets that drive his ego. While that isn't all untrue of how we know Lando, a little less "my cape is awesome and I don't want to get it dirty" would be ideal for SWEU enthusiasts who want a little more substance out of a loved character. But this is a kids novel, so perhaps substance is put to the wayside in favor of readability. Nevertheless, the story is pretty good and is considered Canon, so I'll give it 3 stars for that.

Pros:
-Includes Canon characters and the Falcon.
-Decent story that furthers knowledge and lore around planets and characters.

Cons:
-Title, while not misleading, betrays the reader because the story is not centered around Lando.
-Lando's characteristics are arguably contrary to film portrayal.

I listened to this book via Audible.

It can be difficult to know what to expect when it comes to reading a children's book - it could be dumbed down and simplified or it could be something that is just more appropriate for younger audiences. Thankfully Lando's Luck falls into the latter category and is a perfectly fine Star Wars read for fans of all ages.

It isn't said specifically when the story takes place, but it is certainly before the events of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Lando and L3-37 are still cruising around in the Millennium Falcon, usually up to no good. And that's pretty much what happens here.

Aside from the two main protagonists, pretty much everyone else is new to the galaxy far, far away. I found this refreshing, and it was nice to have some different faces. The characters do feel like they lack a little depth, which goes back to the target audience. In general though it was something I was easily able to look past.

I enjoyed the story itself - we get to see new planets and meet new species, which is always fun. There are some nice twists and turns to keep you guessing and some very Star Wars-style action.

Lando's Luck isn't going to keep you busy for too long, but it's a fun trip into the universe we all love. I definitely recommend it for dedicated fans of Star Wars or younger fans looking to branch out past the movies.

When Lando Calrissian is caught smuggling valuable furs from the kingdom of Hynestia, he faces a choice: either sit in prison or help Princess Rinetta take the Solstice Globe back to the planet it belongs to. Always up for an adventure and running from those he owes money to, Lando reluctantly agrees to help Rinetta. Flying the Millennium Falcon with his loyal first mate L3-37, Lando takes his best shot at helping Rinetta and keeping himself out of the clutches of his pursuers. Will Lando's luck win the day?
I thought this book was so much fun, and since I am a Star Wars fan I really enjoyed it. Since I've seen the movie Solo, I enjoyed this book even more because I could picture L3 backtalking Lando as well as Lando cheating at the card table. I thought there was a great balance between humor and peril, the characters were vivid, and the dialogue was well written. The writing and the plot are just right for a middle grade novel, and I think kids would enjoy this book as well as older Star Wars fans. I highly recommend this book!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley's Bookish First program. A positive review was not required, and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Imgaine my delight when I was informed that I won this book. I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan since it first came out. I even read the books in the 90s'. I can never get tired of them. Lando happens to be one of the mysterious characters. I've always wondered about his past. I orginally thought I'd get some of the gist of his past and how he became the man he is. Unfortunately that didn't happened. But.....there a piece of his past which is told by a woman.
The illustrations were wonderfully and tastefully done on the cover and inside the book. The kids will enjoy them.
This story was so fun to read. It's perfect for middle graders and all ages! I'm older and I really enjoyed it. I saw that there is a collection which can be collected together.
By the way, L3 was so my favorite. She cracks me up!
Kudos to Justina Ireland! She's done it again! I will most definately read Solo and the other books to this collection in the future AND I will start reading more of Justina Ireland's books in the future also.
I won this ARC in print from Disney Book Group through Bookish First. Thank you

This story would be more accurately titled "Princess Rinetta's luck". Not only due to many convenient plot points (expected for young reader), but surprisingly there was little need for Lando to be featured at all. Still, I did enjoy imagining his annoyed face as he encounters misfortune after misfortune. I also enjoyed the portrayal of L3, being more egregious than perfect.

The villain, Queen Forsythia was diminished as the story went on, it felt as though the author had to make the Hynestians a people of good morals.

What I did enjoy was the great world building, the side quest on Neral's moon, and the wonderful sense of adventure from Rinetta.

I thought one glaring omission was a father figure for Princess Rinetta, in fact her having a biological father is not mentioned whatsoever. This is perhaps filled by the brutish alien Zel, though her snarkiness made her hard to like. I thought there was a perfect opportunity for Lando and Rinetta to connect, especially about their mothers, yet the author chose to ignore this. An emotional bond between main characters would've raised this story to a great quality.

Excerpt:
--------
Star Wars: Lando’s Luck (Flight of the Falcon, #1) by Justina Ireland is the first of two installments on the Flight of the Falcon series. (Look for the book review for the second installment in a bit.)

Star Wars: Lando’s Luck, the first book in the Flight of the Falcon series, brings us on an exciting adventure with none other than the galaxy’s most charming gambler, Lando Calrissian. Written by Justina Ireland, this middle-grade novel is a fast-paced, action-packed story that explores Lando’s life as a rogue pilot, highlighting his wit, cleverness, and occasional brushes with morality.

As the inaugural book in the Flight of the Falcon series, it sets the tone for what readers can expect: engaging characters, high-stakes missions, and the legendary Millennium Falcon at the center of it all.

Off the heels of Solo, a Lando Calrissian tie-in book is a no-brainer for Disney, and I think they picked exactly the right person to tell the tale in Justina Ireland. Lando's Luck is exactly what you would want in a middle-grade Star Wars book. It's got adventure, planet-hopping, firefights, whimsically imaginative elements, and an absolutely charming cast.

While Lando is the titular character, the real scene-stealer is the secondary main character, a clever young princess named Rinetta who goes toe-to-toe with Lando over the fate of her friend and mentor's home planet. The two team up with and face off against a wide assortment of characters, and their plots and escapes are well complemented by periodic illustrations that bring the scenery to life. For a fairly quick read at only 92 pages, the book works in a surprising number of plots, hijinks, and daring escapes. It's a fun read for adults with or without much background in the Star Wars universe, and it's sure to thrill young readers.

*Disclaimer* I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Lando's Luck is a middle grade Star Wars themed novel.

Being a non Star Wars fan I was nervous that I would be lost with the characters, planets, and Star Wars vocabulary that is unique to the Star Wars world. My feelings were unfounded because Justina Ireland does a phenomenal job explaining the ins and outs of the universe. As unique Star Wars ideas are introduced she briefly explains them.

The novel begins with Lando Calrissian, a gambler and smuggler with a reputation for swindling those that come in contact with him. When he is caught smuggling on the planet Hynestia, the queen makes him an offer he cannot refuse, bring the Solstice Globe to the empire. The problem is the Solstice Globe does not belong to Hynestia or the Empire. The adventure begins when Princess Rinetta makes Lando a different.

The characters come alive in this story as they travel around the universe on their adventures.

A Fun Lando and L3 Adventure

This is the first of the Flight of the Falcon books, and it is a fun, quick read. When a bounty hunter is hired to acquire the Millennium Falcon, she has to find it first. It also helps to have an idea of what the ship is capable of doing. To that end, Bazine, the bounty hunter, seeks out a woman with a story about the famous ship. She pays for the story and hears the tale of a princess that happened to meet Lando and L3-37 at a time when the Falcon was in their possession.

This is a fun adventure. Star Wars fans get to learn about a few new planets in the Star Wars galaxy as Lando’s adventure unfolds. There are chases, escapes, fire fights, and a little political intrigue plus enough scoundrel antics to satisfy any Star Wars fan.

This is a well written story and a good way to pass a few hours in the Star Wars universe. Well done, Justina Ireland.

Maye my expectations have been eroded by the deluge of mediocrity and trash coming from Del Rey since the Disney acquisition of Star Wars, but 'Lando's Luck' was an enjoyable ride.

Piggybacking on Donald Glover's portrayal of Lando in 'Solo', Ireland writes a nearly pitch perfect version of the smooth talking ne'er-do-well as Lando flies through the galaxy with a princess to return a sacred orb to a planet in distress. Fine, the story itself is meh, but Ireland makes up for it with some subtle (and often not-so-subtle) Lando-isms that make it worth the reading.

Would I read a 300 page version of this story? Yes, but I read everything Star Wars. Would I enjoy it? Probably not, but this truncated version is just what's called for and in a world where Star Wars books have abandoned basic storytelling tropes like "beginning, middle, end" and "conflict", this was a lovely breath of air before the plunge into the sea of garbage.
