When God Stops shares the key to living a life that honors the Lord and jumpstarts your faith.
Dr. Derek Grier dissects the extraordinary God-encounters of eight ordinary men and women in the Bible and reveals them as “hidden figures” of the New Testament. The retelling of the biblical accounts from a new perspective will uncover the answer to the age-old question: What makes God stop and pay attention? The answer is faith.
Whether it was a man with leprosy, a sick child, or a short tax collector sitting in a tree, they all had one thing in common—a burning desire to get God’s attention. Dr. Grier adds to the narrative by sharing the details of his personal pilgrimage. Growing up angry at God and looking for an identity, Grier eventually attended college and found the kind of faith that made him feel loved and centered for the first time in his life.
Each chapter includes insightful verse-by-verse biblical teaching, compelling personal testimony, a section of practical application, and a thought-provoking discussion guide.
In his book, When God Stops, Derek Grier gives us examples of Biblical characters that God ''stopped' for. Along with snippets of his own personal story, this can be an interesting read to see how you can also be a person God ''stops'' for.
I received an arc from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I received an ARC from Thomas Nelson via NetGalley this review is my personal opinion
This book took me by surprise, I’ll confess that I was not familiar with the ministry of Pastor Grier, and after reading his testimony through the book. It surely makes happy to see how God works in the life of a man who decides trust and believe in God. I like the tone and the form he wrote it. He first took a specific passage of the bible and explain it in small and under table phrases, with interesting inside information you can go in step by step how we see Jesus stop in those important moments and what those represent in the life of those men and woman, with an honest and approachable message. I believe Pastor Derek Grier, talking from his own experience, tells through the book. He wants us to invite us to have real and deep faith in Him, above what our eyes and emotions are feelings.
This book is rather unique in a couple of ways. First, the author is not a white male, and uses his experiences growing up is relative poverty and an atmosphere of racism to show his struggles finding God. But he did (or rather God got his attention!). The premise of the book is to focus on figures in the Bible who did or said something that got God's attention, such as the Roman centurion in the New Testament who asked Jesus to heal his sick servant, but did not want Jesus to enter his house --- because he knew Jesus had the authority to heal the servant from a distance with just a word, and this faith caught Jesus by surprise! This approach illustrates different ways and means we can approach God for our needs, and the character of God who responds to cries for help that other humans would simply ignore. Highly recommended!
In this book the author explores what makes God stop and pay attention to the plight of various ordinary individuals in the Bible. Along the way he also shares his own faith journey and how societal events impacted his own Christian journey. This combination adds new insights to familiar Bible stories.
The stories of the people in the Bible that God stopped for were well written and showed the reader examples of great faith. They were very beneficial. However, the writer wrote too much about his personal life situations. They did not resonate well with me.
Pretty good so far. Exsplans well. I enjoyed the reading as much as I can considering I havent finshed it yet for review. But will not let me read until review done
