I cannot in good conscience recommend the chapters after the first five to any beginner witch. Each element of the recipe book-like spells would take lots of research to really know why they work and how to adapt them, and the book repeatedly suggests washing stones with soap and water, even for stones for which this would be damaging or dangerous.
The correspondence charts are very useful, and for a more advanced worker and researcher the book works great as an idea-starter, but the many issues with the listed spells, whether they be physically, scientifically dangerous, or appropriative and spiritually risky, means this really shouldn’t be one’s first book on the ways of the witch. It starts with the “magick” spelling and ends with calling upon deities with which one doesn’t normally work.
The cover gives one a false impression as to the contents of the book and I was highly disappointed.
Today I'm reviewing Hex Your Ex: And 100+ Other Spells to Right Wrongs and Banish Bad Luck for Good.
Generally I like to start out with a disclaimer. I am an atheist witch. I look for the connection between magic and science without the need for a deity. I receive no compensation for these reviews and all my links are standard Amazon links and not affiliate links. I am a practicing photo reader and have spent the last 13 years honing my craft. I offer personal readings by request and have a strong online history that boasts nearly 400,000 views.
As usual I'll start with a review of the physical book. First, I love the fact that this book is hard cover. Many of these types come out as a soft cover and I find that just makes it more difficult for travel. This is a small book so it is really easy to toss into a purse or backpack. The cover of the book is a bit of a tease. While you can find spells for hexing inside the book is also filled with numerous other spells. This book also contains my favorite part of any decent reference book, a solid index. I think authors too often neglect to add this at a detriment to their audience.
The language of the book is very casual. You won't find any ancient Hecatean chants or Orphic Hymns here. The first chapter goes into the "rules" if you will on using magic and witchcraft. The author tells us about white magic, black magic and gray magic and guides the reader on focusing that intent. The text has been "updated" if you will, to change "Coven" with "Magical Squad". While witty and entertaining, I'm not sure that the traditional practitioner will see this as anything useful. We have to remember though that these new changes in syntax or presentation are simply the way that magical rites and rituals are being adopted and expanded by those who are newly entering the craft.
I will call out specifically however, how much I really enjoyed the list on page 19 that is written as follows:
SHOW RESPECT - Treat the spirit helps as honored teachers and allies, not servants. ASK FOR ASSISTANCE - guides, guardians and deities recognize your free will and might not intervene unless you invite them to. DON'T TRY TO MICROMANAGE - If you seek aid from spirit beings, turn of the reigns and allow them to carry out your request as they see fit.
I think many old witches need to learn these lessons as well.
Chapter two takes us in to spells for every occasion. It breaks down the types of spells and defines them. I think this is a great chapter for new and old witches alike. There is some great info here that our people could really learn from.
I won't go through each and every chapter, but I can say my initial scoff at this book has to be taken back. The author would do better by selecting a different title, though tongue in cheek it comes off initially as a book not to be taken seriously. To me the title says, I'm making fun of magic, but the content is really quite helpful and in my opinion key to anyone who wants to learn the ins and outs of magic and witchcraft.
Overall, I think this is a great book (I can't believe I'm writing this) to have on your witchy or magical bookshelf.
Wtf was that? Absolutely not. Doesn't even have a single hex in it. Doesn't even get to the spells until over halfway into the book. Spells to become a millionaire? I think the fuck not. Doesn't work like that. The list of ingredients most of the spells in this book needs are at least 8-10 items. No.
Way too much work for me. But I've seen spell books with more paraphernalia that I wondered if the spells were worth the bother. All that money and what if it doesn't work?!?! Well, anyway, I am sure it's a good start for learning spells. Not too time consuming or expensive, and , most importantly, good sound advice: that it harm none, do what thou wilt. And don't mess with demons! White magic is good. Not sure of the love spells...I have mixed feelings about those. Banishing spell would be safer. AND no one should hex anyone! So poor title.....pick lovers wisely. And don't ever forget gratitude to the spirits for their assistance. They are more willing to help if you have appreciation for them.
This is an excellent, easy to understand introduction to spellcasting. It is broken down in a way that walks you through the understanding of spells before providing you with a variety for your needs. While I was hoping for something a bit more in depth, getting back to the basics can be a great way to improve overall.
I did find it odd that it only lists a publisher and not an author...
This is a good read for someone who is new and just starting to learn. The title is misleading and I think if your thinking your path is leading you down the wiccan way then for sure a must read. However, if your not a noob or you don't follow the 3x3 dogma or even are a bit more info grey magic then I don't think this book is what your looking for.
I thought it was going to be a comedic set of stories on how our not-so-favorite folks get there comeuppance. I was wrong. This is exactly what the title says; a guide to getting your magic working and creating your own personal grimoire. I was disappointed.
Pretty against anything that isn't wiccan for a book literally called "hex your ex"... I think that tells you all you need to know. Spellwork in it is decent though. Just not what you would expect at all
