Rate this book
In a world where people spend more time engaging through screens than in real-life interaction, showing basic human kindness can feel like a lost art. Be Kind offers children aged 5 and up simple, actionable things they can do in their daily lives that help them cultivate kindness toward others and grow into people with the capacity to make the world a kinder place.

With joyful illustrations and kid-friendly writing, this idea book serves as a delightful, easy-to-read collection of 100 concrete activities kids and their families can pick and choose from and act out in their daily lives, whether it’s being the first person to say good morning, offering compliments, shoveling an elderly neighbor’s driveway, learning to say hello in different languages, or sending a card to someone — no special occasion required. On every page, Be Kind empowers kids to make the world a better, kinder place, one action at a time.

My Thoughts
Think of this book a box and each of its pages as pixie dust that contain kindness. Now go ahead and sprinkle that all around. With adorable and vibrant illustrations accompanying the simple, easy to follow text, this book encourages its readers (kids and adults alike) to be kindness warriors each and every day.

The suggestions range from the super-easy (smile at someone in the car next to you or on the street, be the first to say good-morning, share a treat) to others that require just a little bit more effort (learn how to say hello in many languages, memorize jokes, make and send cards simply because) to those that need help from older people (like entertaining at a senior center).

This book thus teaches everyone (whether you are six or sixty) many ways to be kind – to loved ones, strangers, and even to themselves – thus making the world a better place.

In Summary
Be Kind and gift this book to loved ones, and get one for yourself too!! This book is so endearingly cute that you will want one for yourself, and it will help each of us to keep up with our random acts of kindness, and give us little reminders each day…

Disclaimer: Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the eARC of the book; these are my honest opinions after reading this book.

I thought that the idea behind this book was excellent and the execution of the book was spot on.
The world can be a really negative place at times and this is a book aimed at children to be kind and try little things everyday to be kind to others. The book is easy to follow and read and the ideas are brief and clear. It is 5 stars from me for this one - very highly recommended!!

This is a very cute book that highlights ways kids can do acts of kindness from offering a hug to sitting with other kids in the cafeteria. I like the bright illustrations and the quick ideas on each page. Great gift for a little one.

Share a treat with a friend. Memorize a few great jokes. Smile and wave at someone in the cat next to you. This book has many different activities that teach children to be kind to each other and maybe even to themselves. There are things that a 5 year old can do, there are things that a 15 year old could do and there are things that a 50 year old can do. This book has great suggestions that can be done by a variety of ages for a variety of ages. I really enjoyed the entire book and thought the illustrations that go along with some of the activities are lovely. This book definitely deserves a place on our shelf.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a free copy in return for an honest review.

This is a lovely book that prompts children to do kind things. It teaches them the importance of being selfless and helping others. The illustrations are bright and simple (though a little warped in places) and accompany the text well. The great thing about this book is that children could open it at any page and do that thoughtful act of kindness that day. There are some lovely suggestions, particularly with helping the elderly and those less fortunate than ourselves. It is a very important trait to instill in children at a young age and will hopefully encourage them to be kind in the future without needing to be prompted.

I read Be Kind with my 6 and 8-year-old children. We talk a lot about treating others kindly and this book had so many wonderful and accessible ideas that they could easily add to their daily lives. The illustrations and text were engaging and this was such a positive discussion starter for our family. We will definitely be adding Be Kind to our home library! Oh my gosh, what a sweet book! My son is too young to understand it but loved looking at the vibrant illustrations, and the book gave SO many ideas on easy ways to spread love and kindness. We will absolutely be implementing them as he grows. This would be a very good book to give as a gift to children or their parents.

Be Kind is a colorful collection of kid-friendly acts of kindness. Most of the suggestions can be completed independently which is very empowering for kids. The graphics are cute and engaging. I would use this book in my lessons about friendship, kindness, and bullying prevention for primary students. Due to its length, I may need to break up the book or concentrate on my favorite sections. I will recommend this book to other educators and parents. Thanks Storey Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC of this title.

I read this book with my 8 year old who enjoyed it as much as I did. My personal favorite was "be a hug ambassador" and he is now ready to cover pine cones with bird seeds for the birds. We want to make sure our children are kind people above all else and this book was right up our alley. The ideas are simple and easy to do. I love a good list and to have a list of ideas to reference is always nice for this mom brain of mine. Be Kind is a simple yet important reminder that we can be kind in many ways in many places. Thank you NetGalley for his e-ARC.

Wonderful. Lots of this stuff I was raised to do, or figured out myself, but still I'm getting lots of great ideas. I feared it would be too idealistic or unrealistic, but most of these are universally doable.
And I'm almost 59 and not in school, so this "kid's" book isn't even directed to me; I can only imagine how much more helpful it is to the target audience and their families. Delightful illustrations, too. Maybe I should be kind and buy copies for libraries & schools....

These I could have used in the past:

1. Play Rose & Thorn (and Bud) at family meals.

2. At a carnival, give extra tickets to someone not leaving yet.

These I do now:

3. Empty a glass of water into a potted plant (instead of down the sink).

4. Don't squish a spider - if inside, gently trap it in a cup and carry it outside. Then leave it alone.

5. In a public restroom, wipe down the counter with the dry part of your paper towel for the next person.

These I will consider:

6. Leave a nice note (on a bookmark) for the next reader.

7. Paint kindness rocks with messages such as You Rock or Hello Friend.

8. Create a cheerful poster, tape to your front window facing out.

This is something I try to do, but should do better:

9. "Does a friend disagree with something you feel strongly about? Listen to her point and reply calmly. Instead of getting angry with her, find something to agree on."

This doesn't apply to me, but is important:

10. Keep kitty indoors.

Lots more in the book. I promise you, get this from your library, and if they don't have it, recommend it for purchase--it's worth it. And if you know anything else sort of like it, please comment--my sons and I are always looking for ways to make the world a better place.

I loved the idea of this book. It is basically 80 pages of very short suggestions for ways to be kind (if you notice a friend likes a particular toy of yours, buy them something similar for their birthday, leave a nice note on a bookmark for the next patron at the library to find, turn off the lights when you leave the room). The pictures are bright and fun-- sort of Todd Parr-esque, and the ideas are (mostly) solid, caring, and simple for children to understand. I think, in order for the book to be most effective, it needs to be shared, rather than read alone-- because it is, essentially just a list-- with no context about kinds of kindness, or why kindness is important-- and probably better shared in pieces, rather than read all at once. 2.5.

Pros: This book is charming and needed for children, teens, and adults. Sometimes we forget to be kind as adults, but this book helps children start off on the right path. It takes a second to be kind, and a minute or longer for the opposite. This little reminder is just what a person needs to help their hearts and others throughout the day. It's a good way to be in general and this book is what the reader needs in order to do give back to others.

Cons: None! It is a must read, and a great tool to keep in your collection of books for everyone in the household, and not just for kids.

Because my 2022 focus word is "kind" the title of this book caught my attention, and I bought a copy. It is a great little book with wonderful ideas on how to be kind that I want to implement. As a bonus, I learned quite a number of things about Jewish people, including language.

So many cute ideas on how to share light and happiness with others! This book is especially for kids going to elementary school (there are a lot of ideas of what you can do at school) but there were some ideas that would definitely need a grownup’s help like setting up a movie night or a community clean-up day.

Some of the ideas had more to do with just making the world a better place rather than being kind, but I didn’t mind. For example, using leftover water to water your plants instead of throwing it down the sink isn’t really being kind. It’s just being mindful about the world. Still loved it. I especially loved all the cute accompanying pictures with each idea!

Here are some of the ideas found in the book:

-Race to say good morning
-Make breakfast in bed for someone you love
-Learn to say hello in several languages
-Smile at one more person each day
-If you overhear someone saying a bad thing about someone else, say something nice about them
-If you see someone crying ask what’s wrong and help them
-Paint kindness rocks and put them somewhere unexpected so people will get a little surprise smile
-Share your artwork with the world. Tape it in a window so people will see it
-Make room for a new kid at the lunch table
-Set up a birdfeeder
-Thank your cashier or waitress
-Leave a generous tip

I put this book in my “back to school” category because I think it would help remind kids to start off the school year with kindness. A lot of these ideas teach good manners and are great reminders of what is important.

Be Kind by Naomi Shulman has an interesting list type of format, giving kids ideas on how to show kindness to others. The illustrations are cute in a simplest way meaning that they are done without too much busyness to fill the page. Instead the ideas take precedence. The ideas are short one sentence two at the most but convey the attitudes of kindness, thoughtfulness, consideration, thankfulness and helpfulness. They include way to brighter the day for young and older and animals too.

I read the book in several sitting with a preschooler. Not so much because the text was so much but because 125 different ways to show kindness is a lot to take in at one time. The ideas given are not elaborate or difficult to put into practice. However, my very favorite thought is at the beginning when the author suggests that the reader not limit themselves to the ones in the book but to come up with more. What a wonderful idea to intentionally develop the mindset of looking for way to show kindness daily.

I could see a family or a classroom reading one of these ideas a day. When the book is finished then begin again or write their own book by adding new ideas and ways.

The publisher through Net Galley provided an ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.

Looking for a good way to make children more aware of how to be kind and demonstrate it every day? Then Be Kind: You Can Make the World a Happier Place! by Naomi Shulman is the perfect book for you. With over 100 ideas of kind things to do, Be Kind can be read at one sitting or broken up into a suggestion per day. I would suggest doing both! Not all suggestions are appropriate for all children or settings. For example, setting up a neighborhood lost and found could be problematic in some neighborhoods or for a child who needs boundary guidelines. I really think this is a good book for an adult to share with a child so that discussion can occur about safety issues and materials, and assistance and supervision can be provided as needed. Most of the examples, however, are just uncomplicated, courteous actions such as smiling at people or sharing room on bleachers. Just thinking of kind things and implementing them can help you think of more kind things to do. Children could even write and illustrate a book of their own ideas or a log of their acts of kindness.

I would like to extend my thanks to netgalley.com and to Storey Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Lovely suggestions that inspire, we will certainly include them in our family!

The proposed activities are simple, charming and best of all, they develop social awareness, ethical behaviors, cooperation and solidarity; In addition to promoting order and consideration towards others including animals. The author invites children to be more proactive, participatory, positive, which in my opinion is a way to learn to motivate themselves, which is a very important competence for leadership and success. In general, children will learn to be less egotistical and individualistic (it can be a cause of desolation and depression), to strengthen the awareness of our interconnection, to be members with a positive and creative impact on their community.

I recommend this book to put into practice in family, at school, everywhere and to help our children develop a constructive attitude that enriches their lives, put their values into action, nurture appreciation for themselves and others, to be able to respond to seemingly unfortunate circumstances and give them a creative twist, to relate with less drama and more humorous, and in short give deep meaning to their lives.

My sincere appreciation to the Publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to review the book

Have you printed off your copy of the Reading Together Summer Reading Challenge? @hereweeread and @artish.reader put together a fabulous coloring printable to encourage you and your kid(s) to diversify your reading this summer. When we saw the prompt to read a book about kindness, we knew exactly what to grab!

We discovered this book last year when we got lost amongst the goodness of the @bookpeople kid’s section. It instantly came home with us and we have enjoyed reading it quite a few times ever since.

This book is full of numerous way kids can practice acts of kindness throughout their daily lives. The illustrations are vivid and adorable, the text is simple, but the suggestions are fantastic and easily cover a wide age range. My daughter just completed 4th grade and has enjoyed trying these ideas out.

I’m glad we took a moment and reread it together again this afternoon. It lead to some great conversations as she related some of the acts to another story we completed earlier in the day regarding forgiveness and truly lending a listening ear. My mama heart was definitely left smiling.

I think this book is a great resource to help kickstart a mindful practice of searching for kindness throughout your everyday.

This delightful book is a keeper. I suggest one in every home, classroom and library (whether public or school ). What the world needs now is a fresh sprinkling of magic dust to make kindness reign!

Each page is bright, vibrant and kid-friendly with simple text that encourage kids (and adults) to be ambassadors of KINDNESS! 125 suggestions are there at your fingertips to start implementing... acts of selflessness, engagement and reaching out to others to make their day better and happier. Some are easy like smiling at someone, complimenting them, saying good morning first, and others take more effort such as sticking up for someone who is being bullied, eating with the new kid at the lunchroom table, planting bird-friendly plants like sunflowers, hosting a movie night complete with popcorn for your friends, reading to someone who hasn't learned how to yet and offering to help classmates if they are struggling with math or other subjects, just to name a few.

If everyone chooses kindness, and it is a choice, the world will be a much happier place for us all. "If you can be anything, be kind."

Smile at one more person each day, pick up trash, compliment everyone, keep a thankfulness jar,… How many ways to express kindness you can think of? Surprisingly, this adorable book tells us more than 100 ways to show kindness.
With colorful illustration and simple text, this nonfiction picture book exposes readers to a wide range of acts about basic human kindness, which serve as a great reminder in our daily life for kids and adults alike. As the words “ you can make the world a happier place” on the cover says, it is your choice that makes a difference to the world. This book is meant to encourage kids to do simple and kind acts in their daily lives.
When I first read this book with my son, five, and when we stopped on the page “ Be a hug ambassador, …”, he hugged me and said, “ Mom, I love you.” It reminds me that kindness is something that needs to be taught and reinforced by showing them how to be kind. So, if you are looking for a book to share kindness with your kids, why not consider picking up this lovely book.

How can YOU be kind to the world around you?
-"Start a conversation with a new kid at your school."
-"If you overhear kids saying bad things about someone else, step in to say something nice about them."
-"Make room for a new kid at the lunch table."
-"Make your backyard a safe haven for winged things. They'll bring extra joy as they fly by your window."

'Be Kind' by Naomi Shulman is, hands down, one of the most delightful books to read and give your family ideas for being our kindest selves.

Shulman gives 125 ways to "make the world a happier place." But even outside of that, it is also visually beautiful and fun...making kids want to pick it up and read it again and again...and, in turn, want to do the many kind things the book suggests.

Every single home and classroom NEEDS this book in easy reach... I bought my own physical copy the second I finished reading this digital one.

A HUGE Thank You to NetGalley and Storey Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This book was received as an ARC from Storey Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

From the cover page to the last page I loved this book and the message that came across. Some of the ways of kindness described in this book were new and different such as making a "no sew" pillow and a sock toy for your dog and cat. Also, I love the relevancy of kindness by incorporating social media safety into this book and talks about the ways on how to react properly from photos shared on your Facebook, Instagram and Twitter page. EVERYONE should own this book no matter the age no matter the grade level.

We will definitely consider adding this book into our JPICBK collection at the library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

This book is a gem! “Be Kind” is a picture book filled with 125 things you can do and say to make the world a happier place. And don’t we all want that, to live in a happier world?

I absolutely love these type of books: books that are positive, encouraging and aiming to teach kids good behaviours. It is even better when they are also this fun! Childhood is so important because that’s when we develop manners and also form our most basic approaches to life. Books like this help guide the younger generation to a better and more positive way of life. This one, paired up with charming illustrations, was just so fun and engaging.

Would highly recommend!

Full of ideas of how children could put a little kindness into their day. With ideas such as giving up your seat on the bus, donating your hair to charity and turning off lights in the room there are ideas to help children of all ages do an act of kindness for others whether that be people they meet, people they will never meet or the environment.
I would hesitate to use this as a text for the whole class to share because of the American spellings, however I may consider using it to give the children ideas or challenges each day.
The book was easy to read with large text and bright colours and the quantity of text was just right with plenty to keep a child interested.
