Meet Errol, a cheeky and loveable character, who refuses to follow his mum. Even when she counts to three. Created by acclaimed Australian children's book creators, Zanni Louise and Philip Bunting.
Zanni Louise is an internationally published Australian author of over 40 books from picture books to young adult novels (writing as Zanni L Arnot.) Her books have been recognised by prominent speech pathology and educational publishing awards, as well as the Children’s Book Council of Australia, White Raven’s International Catalogue of Children’s Books, Panda Awards, K.O.A.L.A. Awards, Sakura Book Medal Reading List and the Australian Book Design Awards, among others. Her middle-grade novel, Queenie in Seven Moves, is on the New South Wales school curriculum.
Zanni has a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Creative Writing, as well as a Graduate Diploma of Psychology and a Certificate in Counselling. Zanni currently lives in an artists' warehouse in The Netherlands with two tall teens and an even taller husband. She loves visiting schools, organising retreats for grown-ups, and running in forests. Zanni is the founder of The Sunshine House, a growing community of writers and illustrators, as well as an author ambassador for Room To Read, which supports girls’ education and literacy.
This picture book is a very different one from Zanni's other PB but we loved it all the same.
Errol, a young penguin, is doing what many youngsters do -going slow at the time when they need to move fast!
His mother tries to be patient with him but after asking him too many times, she does the parent trick of 'walking away'....only to find that when she glances back, Errol has wandered off too.
Errol is a great picture book for children of all ages as with limited words to read, the readers can create their own ideas, wonder what that little penguin and his mother are really thinking and spend time looking at the small details of Errol's adventures.
Phil Bunting's illustrations match in perfectly with this story as they are full of vibrant colours and fun.
We enjoyed reading Errol and loved seeing/reading a story that was told in a way that ignited our imagination.
Errol the penguin won't come when his mum calls. Instead, he disappears under the snow! A partly-wordless picture book about a mum who thinks her son is lost and about the adventure Errol has before the pops back up.
This picture book was a bit too simple for my liking. There wasn't really much of a story. I only picked it up because I like Philip Bunting's illustration style, but there wasn't even much of that — a lot of repetitive illustrations. Too bad! Skip this one.
Do you remember those situations when you just want your kids to keep moving and follow you and they simply won't? Because everything around them becomes all of a sudden extremely interesting and attractive? Or because they are in a state of dreaming?
Errol! by Zanni Louise and Philip Bunting is a hilarious picture book about those situations. When mothers want things to happen but children are not very helpful. And in the end... love is the answer!
A very sweet story about a little penguin who didn’t listen to his mother and ends up on his own adventure while his mother worries about where he has gone. Simple text and simple illustrations make this an easily accessible story with lots of creative discussion to be had.
