Democrat to Deplorable: Why Nine Million Obama Voters Ditched the Democrats and Embraced Donald Trump

Rate this book
“Democrat to Deplorable" takes a deep look at the nine million Democrats who proudly switched parties to vote for President Donald Trump. These voters feel the cold edge of the culture war more than any other group and this book captures their experiences and the current zeitgeist. Based on a national survey, in-depth interviews, and a personal narrative, “Democrat To Deplorable” is the definitive book which explores and explains the current cultural climate leading to President Donald Trump, Trumpism, and the New Right.

Jack Murphy has done what media pundits, pollsters, psychologists, political experts and fortune tellers failed to do over the past 18 months--he has presented an explanation for why so many voters supported Trump in the 2016 election.

Using his own personal experience, extensive interviews and a detailed survey, Murphy uncovers and shares the reasons 9 million democrats became "Deplorable". Then Murphy unravels these personal stories to show how broken campaign promises, policy decisions, a complex global economy and a changing culture created an environment where voting for Trump was not just a preference but an imperative.

If you want to understand why smart, educated, compassionate Americans would turn their backs on the democratic party to vote for an unrefined, offensive, inexperienced political outsider like Trump, this is the book you need to read.

Fantastic. Hard to put down (I got a little distracted with coronavirus hysteria so it took me longer than it should’ve). Loved the chapters on globalism, feminism, and the blue cathedral. Going to buy copies for few friends.

Excellent read! Insightful look at why millions of people have left the Democrats and embraced Trump. As more people break away from the fixed narratives fed to them and start to question the information presented by the Main Stream Media it becomes very clear why the Democrats have lost their way. The culture wars are an existential threat to Western civilisation and Trump is currently standing between these regressive leftists and western values. If I lived in the US I would have been an Obama voter turned deplorable. One of my best reads this year.

Interesting perspective

I read this book just to learn as I do not fall into this category. Democrats to Deplorables had stories that need to be told. The issues discussed in the book are extremely important and people should be made aware. I became politically active to counter the very problems this book discusses. The majority of this book is dedicated to telling personal accounts. The last third dives more into the root.

This book filled me up with knowledge and wisdom much the same way Matt filled up Mrs Murphy

The author analyzes why nine million democrats chose to leave the party in 2016 and vote for Donald Trump. Bottom line: the voters were seeking the hope and change that they didn’t find during the Obama presidency. “Drain the Swamp” resonated with these voters. The author was most effective when discussing his own reasons for ditching the democrats, he was less successful in quantifying the aggregate rationale. I was quite intrigued by his discussion of “the blue church” and the ostracism faced by democrats when they stop blindly following party doctrines.

I love Jack Murphy, but the book was a little hard to get through. Most likely this is because it isn't relevant anymore. I'm sure it was much better when it was first released, but we are far past the Obama/Trump era.... For now.

Very well written and defines people like me. Be mindful of some typos but can be easily ignored.

Great understanding of how the political climate has changed and twisted the world into this "new" normal

The story of 9 million people who voted for Obama and then voted for Trump. It was a great book for the first 75% and then took a nose dive in the last quarter.
