Surender Mohan Pathak, is an author of Hindi-language crime fiction with 314 books to his credit. His major characters are Crime reporter Sunil (unprecedented 123 Titles), Vimal (46 Titles) and Philosopher Detective Sudhir (23 titles). Apart from series, he has written 60+ Novels in thriller category.
It starts with a con. The method of the conman is simple. He traps single middle class girls who has money. He romances them and then makes his move. One fine day he is killed. Sunil comes to rescue of the girl who is prime suspect. Can he save her?
This is typical Sunil novel. I liked it immensely. Unputdownable. Vintage SMP.
Pathak is one of the stalwarts of Hindi pulp fiction and the English translation of his popular novels aims to broaden his fan base beyond the Hindi heartland. Conman is my second taste of his works after The Colaba Conspiracy and, I have to say, I am not yet ready to join the fan club. This is a whodunnit about a murder with many suspects which gets solved by the investigative abilities of a journalist. The plot is just okay and the dialogues, for the most part, are not as funny as intended. Maybe the translation has deprived it of the fun it is meant to have, but I was not very impressed. I may try to read one more, in Hindi if possible, before deciding about giving up on this otherwise very famous author.
I used to read Hindi novels in my childhood (yes I really mean childhood)- novels by Ved Prakash Sharma, Surendra Mohan Patahk etc and had fond memories of them. These were my first brush with the written word, and I had keenly followed some serieses like the Sunil series. The current novel is of Sunil series, but I found it lacking.
Although I did manage to read it in a couple of days, it neither had a spell on me nor managed to surprise me by its ending. Also perhaps my 'taste' has really evolved over time - although I never believed in the snobbery of intellectual readers , and still have great respect to this class as a whole, alas the nostalgia of childhood was not created/ relived. Overall a very passable novel.
Always enjoyable, having read Mr Pathak since college. This particular Sunil series has thrill missing also characters should have evolved over the years. Always a time pass read though.
One star less for Sunil & Ramakant's unwanted Dialogues. Happy for Prabhudayal's performance. But disappointed by eye witness thing. One word Good Mistry!
It was my first book of mr. Pathak. The story is good however the hindi used was difficult to understand. Author also has a habit of Deviate from topic.
