The Beckett Files #4

A Tangled Ruse

Rate this book
After a failed abduction attempt, Lady Rachel is sent into hiding on her uncle’s estate near the sleepy village of Rockcliffe on the shores of Scotland. As she struggles to cope with the nightmares of her past, she unwittingly stumbles into even greater danger than she left behind. And this time, Shadow isn't around to save her. Luke Beckett, the Marquess of Downshire, was content running his stud farm in solitude, far from the scheming of the devious women of Society. That is, until his neighbor's infuriatingly contrary niece rides into his life. Hiding behind the guise of a common horse trainer, he begins to form a peculiar friendship with Lady Rachel, without the constraints of his title. However, the longer the ruse continues, the more Luke realizes there is much more at stake than just their friendship. With the looming threat of a French invasion, Luke and Rachel must work together to stop the tangled web of treachery before it is too late. When the truth is finally revealed, will they have the strength to trust each other with their hearts, or will the fear of rejection destroy their relationship before it has a chance to begin?

This is fourth in the series and events from the previous books are mentioned semi-awkwardly right up front—most likely to remind or inform those who don't know/remember. So feel free to skip as the author ensures you won't miss out and you pay the price for the semi-awkward exposition regardless.

This is one of those books that you have to give its premise. In this case, that gently-bred women are frequent targets of kidnappings and that at least some of them are hearty souls who not only foil dastardly plots but become famous "agents of the crown" while they do and that a network of these doughty women naturally springs up as they solve crimes and get each other out of jams. Seriously, lots and lots of dastardly doings and you kind of just have to roll with it. Indeed, we arrive in Scotland to find not just a rash of horse theft but a jarring number of missing constables that nobody seems at all curious about. Which leads to one of the more ludicrous exchanges where our heroine, Rachel, yearns for adventure only to be reminded that she has already survived a kidnapping and incurred the debt of His Majesty's Government and that she is currently fleeing London because she's being targeted by more kidnappers.

I stopped reading at about 15% despite kind of liking Rachel. At least she isn't shy and she's capable of seeking out her own entertainment even in the depths of Scotland. But I had a really hard time immersing in the story for a lot of little things that just added up to too much. It started with all the period violations (yes, beyond the premise). Class distinctions are ignored or referred to only to be dispensed with, Rachel's comportment is more than a little out of line with nobody batting an eye (even before you tackle that she has a young, male bodyguard who follows her around). I don't always care about period accuracy, though, if the story is good. And maybe this one is, but I couldn't get past the characters. Specifically, Rachel's mopey cousin and our "hero", Luke. We're supposed to find Mr. Mopey sympathetic because he lost the woman he loves but he came across as more melodramatic brooder than actual sufferer to me. Cheering/reforming/comforting him is obviously going to be a big part of the story and I'm just rolling my eyes.

Luke is the bigger problem, though. I mean, he's all wringing his hands about his horses disappearing but can't be bothered to care that nearly as many constables have gone missing as well. And he's all "well, this is kind of a backwater and they probably just wandered off." Srsly? Nice to see so much empathy there, my Lord. But I finally shut down when he deliberately lied to Rachel about his identity. Like he's a naughty ten year-old who doesn't want to be caught, uh, owning the place? Yeah, Rachel said she wants to avoid the owner and just wants to borrow some books (because he apparently has an awesome library), but lying about being the guy? Like that isn't literally the stupidest thing he could have done right then? Okay, he might have shot himself in the foot. Oh wait, that's exactly what he did! Hijinks!

Anyway, it all added up to enough that I'm done. I might have been able to ignore any one of the elements that bothered me. But together they tanked my interest in continuing.

This book grabbed my attention from the very first page. There is so much going on in it plot wise. There’s always a character in peril and I didn’t want to put it down! I finished it in one day. It was so great!

This one is about Lady Rachel, she was Eliza’s friend from Saving Shadow. I’m just realizing that if I say any more than that, I’m going to give away the plots of several of the other books. So, I’m going to give you an assignment. Go read all of the other books! I put links to them in my What to read next section.

Anyway, Lady Rachel. I love her! She’s a bit of a bluestocking. In the Regency time period, that means that she likes to read and she does things that a lot of ladies would never do. Rachel wants to be an author, something most ladies would never imagine themselves doing. But due to circumstances beyond her control, she’s being sent to her uncle’s home in Scotland for her own protection. I love the way Rachel is not content to sit idly by doing things ladies should be doing, like embroidery. Rather she’s out riding astride on horses and trying to figure out what’s wrong with her cousin Emmett.

Then she meets Luke…er… John. This is part of what makes this book so fun! Neither Rachel or Luke admit to the other who they really are. Luke is a Marquess. But when he meets Rachel, she appears to be stealing his horse. And he decides not to tell her who he really is. As you can imagine this ends up getting him into tons of trouble with all kinds of people. But he’s actually a great guy, no matter how gruff and closed off he seems to be.

Luke is Eliza’s brother. That means that she plays a huge role in the plot later on. She’s probably one of my most favorite characters ever and this book only reinforces that! I love her cool head in peril.

The plot, as I said earlier is filled with danger and twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. I loved every minute of reading this one!

I really enjoy this series and I love how the plot element has continued through them all. I wouldn't consider any of them to be a standalone. Each book has unfolded more of the story as a whole, so you definitely need to read them in order.

This book takes place away from London and your typical Season with the ton. It was refreshing to have this beautiful seaside setting in Scotland. I love the friendships that are developed and displayed here, regardless of rank. Luke and Rachel are one of those couples that at moments you want to smack some sense into, but I love them together. It is fun watching their relationship grow.

CONTENT
Romance - Sweet and Clean
Language - none
Violence - mild

🌟🌟🌟🌟 I highly recommend this series

When I discovered that I hadn't read this book in one of my favorite series by Laura Beers, I decided to correct that. I love this series because it combines my love of historical fiction and suspense.

Lady Rachel is sent to a quiet Scottish village for her safety, after a terrifying kidnapping attempt—but danger follows her, and a mysterious neighbor begins to complicate everything.

That neighbor is Luke Beckett, the Marquess of Downshire, who has happily removed himself from society to focus on his stud farm. He’s perfectly content avoiding scheming debutantes—until Rachel rides into his life. She’s sharp, bold, and hiding something. Luke isn’t being honest either, since he’s pretending to be a humble horse trainer to get to know her without the pressure of his title. Their friendship builds slowly but steadily, and watching it turn into something deeper is so satisfying.

What I loved most about this story is how well it balances romance and suspense. There’s always something going on—secrets being kept, plots being uncovered, and feelings getting way more complicated than either of them expected. I loved the chemistry between Rachel and Luke—there’s witty banter and trust that builds over time. The romance is tender and slow-burning, and the stakes feel real, both emotionally and in terms of the larger plot.

With a hint of danger, a dash of espionage, and a whole lot of heart, this book hits all the right notes.

This is a wonderful series. Please read them in order. This is book four. Lady Rachael was nearly abducted off the street is London. Her parents sent her to a small country area, and an estate owned by her aunt and Uncle. She goes out exploring, even though she was waned to take one of the grooms, or her male cousin along. She encounters some beautiful horses, and can’t wait to ride. Since she is dressed as a man, and her neighbor a titled gentleman spies the horse being ridden by a stranger, he gives chase. He finds a woman riding astride, and calls her a horse thief. She explains she is a visitor from the next estate, which soon is collaborated . Since he hates the Ton,and the marriage mart she leaves that part out. He too , withholds his title, and says he is the head horse trainer, and that the prize horses from the estate has gone missing despite their best efforts. They get involved with this mystery, as well as spying row boats coming to shore with Frenchmen in them. Her brother, and John the horse trainer infiltrates the group causing unrest among the villagers. It sounds more like a militia is being formed. Lady Rachel sends off notices to Shadow, and a few other agents. Lord Beckett sends off riders to his brother, and to others. He knows they will come, but it may not be in time. The book has a refreshing banter, and storyline in this mystery, romance, and spy novel. I loved the exciting ending, and the epilogue. I am anxious to read the next one. I gave it 5 stars.

Another great story in the Beckett Files series. I’d definitely recommend reading them in order- they build upon each other so well. I loved seeing past characters all come together in this one, and the climax at the end was wonderfully done!

Lady Rachel has recently escaped an attempted kidnapping with the help of Agent of the Crown, Shadow. She was taken hostage by those who would like to see the French influence the English Parliament. Now, it has been determined that Rachel should be kept safe at her uncle's estate in Scotland until the French threat passes. Rachel is left with an Agent and bodyguard David as well as a threat to neighbor and older brother of Shadow, Luke Beckett, the Marquess of Downshire to protect Rachel. However, when the lonely and brooding Marquess first meets Lady Rachel, he believes that she is just like every other English Lady and she only wants him for his money. Upon meeting Lady Rachel, he believes she is a horse thief responsible for the slew of missing animals around town. Rachel believes that Luke is a horse trainer. Luke keeps up the charade by calling himself John. As Rachel and John spend time together, Luke realizes that Lady Rachel is kindhearted and adventurous. Before Luke can let Rachel know of the ruse, a French threat is exposed on the shores of Scotland and Rachel is endangered once again.

The fourth book in The Beckett Files, A Tangled Ruse continues to excite and entertain. I highly recommend reading the rest of the books in the series- and in order to catch up on the Beckett family. I was eager to continue the story with Lady Rachel who, despite her upbringing, desires more. I enjoyed her attitude of being willing to continue on with life and waking up her sense of adventure even after being kidnapped. Along with getting to know more about Lady Rachel, the story dives into Larson's past and we get to meet Jonathan and Eliza's reclusive older brother, Luke. Unlike the other Beckett's, Luke is not an Agent of the Crown but the Marquess of Downshire and his father's heir. At the start, Luke's attitude is distrusting of women and he is a loner and rough around the edges, hiding himself away at his stud farm. When Rachel comes on the scene, the writing creates the feel of a life-like Beauty and the Beast, complete with large library. The writing also offers plenty of masterfully crafted witty back-and-forth banter between Luke and Rachel as well as mounting tension as the French threaten to invade Scotland's shores creating a way for the rest of the Beckett family to come into the scene. Woven in with historical elements of the Napoleonic Wars and the madness of King George III, A Tangled Ruse is more than a regency love story. With an exciting conclusion, a sweet romance and plenty of spy action, A Tangled Ruse is a great addition to The Beckett Files.

Oh, what a tangled mess leaving out a bit of information can become. With every book in this series, its get better and better. Laura just gives you more characters to love and nail-biting adventure that brings the spies together again. I couldn't put it down from the moment Rachel started talking on the way to her uncle's home. I knew it was going to be fun and a wild adventure. Their first meeting is one of the best I have seen and makes it clear they are going to be put through it all. I loved the twist on his ruse with how many people were involved and why. As with the other books, you will not see anything coming and will find yourself cheering, laughing, and crying throughout the story. Many answers are in this book, but just as many new questions to keep you asking for more.

Rachel definitely has been through it all, but it hasn't killed her heart of gold. She is a woman that makes her own choices and is not your typical Lady on the ton. I was excited to see her get her own story and get to know her more. I loved that she wanted to help everyone, but wouldn't hesitate to lay into them as needed. She didn't give up easily and did things she never imagined she would have to.

Luke has a hard shell and won't win you over right away, but you will love him as you get to know him. He hates what society expects and wants to avoid marriage and women for the most heartbreaking reasons. I loved that he didn't realize how much he could scare people and when he was cornered by his siblings. He would give up everything for her even if it meant himself.

I will never get tired of the Beckett family or Mr. Larson. I hope to see more of Rachel's cousin because of his story and David's sister because she seems like she will be fun.

‘A Tangled Ruse’ is #4 in this Regency Spy series by Laura Beers. I’ve been able to read them in order which has really made the continuous stories enjoyable. I really did like this one. It is the story of Lady Rachel, whom we were introduced to in the previous book. She had been kidnapped by French spies, tied to the belly of a ship, along with several other aristocratic young women to be sold to brothels. Lady Rachel and the other women were saved from their horrible fate by agents of the British Crown.

Lady Rachel was still on the target hitlist, so she was sent for guarded safe keeping to her aunt and uncle’s in Scotland. Easily tempted by her adventurous spirit, Rachel went off to explore. She was drawn to the neighboring horse farm where she discovered a beautiful horse that she just had to try out. It was there she met the farm’s “head horse trainer” who accused her of stealing the horse. Not a good first meeting, but it becomes the story jump off point that includes secrets, French spies, British spies, adventure, shoreline caves, intrigue, battles, fights, and of course romance between lovely Rachel and “head horse trainer” John.

Just as good as the previous three of the series! I love having the characters & spies band together to outwit the evil French invaders and spies. How refreshing to have a strong female character, “Shadow”, take a prominent role in these Regency stories. It adds a new dimension that makes this series especially intriguing. I am thoroughly enjoying each book - it’s fiction, it’s fun!

On to #5…

So, this story had lots of fantastical elements - I mean fantastical in the sense of not very realistic. Starting with Lady Rachel's willingness to befriend a horse trainer (basically a servant while she is the daughter of supposedly one of the most powerful earls in Britain), their aptitude with fighting the French army almost singlehandedly, she being a crack shoot, all the mystery surrounding the thefts and the disappearance of all five magistrates (and no one doing nothing about it), etc., etc.
But if you look at it from a fairy tailish point of view, it was a cute story (well, excepting the killings).
Luke is deliciously obnoxious at the beginning - he is cynical, selfish, even rude. But Rachel helps him to change, so much so that he starts to think of the wellbeing of his servants and mourns their deaths in the fight. And I also liked how she discovered what she really wanted in life - and it wasn't what she thought she did. I am already addicted to this (fantastical) group of friends and spies and now can't wait to read the next story and find out how Martha will fight her demons.
Narrative: 3rd person, following Rachel and Luke
Religion: none
Sensuality: clean
Other: killings, fighting

Is there anything better than a brooding hero?? Luke the Marquess of Downshire is just another example of a hot brooding, alpha! What I really enjoyed about, A Tangled Ruse, along with the rest of the Beckett Files by Laura Beers is that the women are just as fierce as the men are, if not more! It's like they were feminist, before feminism was cool or a thing really.

A Tangled Ruse did not lack when it came to action, drama and tears! Laura Beers takes you on a journey back in time in the fight against Napoleon and the French. Rachel who have met in the previous book was sent to stay with her aunt and uncle to be kept safe from an attempted abduction was thrust right into the the thick of a French invasion, where she met the difficult and challenging Luke/John.

A Tangled Ruse not only refers to their love match, but also the invasion and how tactical the soldiers are being to invade Scotland. So much was happening and so many different forces were at play in this story that you kept rooting for Rachel and the British. The story was charming and intense and I can't wait to see what will happen next!

Soo I now binged the whole series as far as it exists (hopefully we will hear Miss Colette's story... and this is not the end...)

I really loved this series... I usally tend to read more the classical regency romance books but I couldnt stop reading here. I loved Laura Beers writing style which was amazing, I loved how she was able to wave the spy story and the romance story elements together and create one , no several facinating books. I also adored all the side characters which we could mostly revisit in later books (where they were the main leads) and which all were absolutely incredibly well developped... You could really feel the different vibes of the characters flowing off the pages. I also loved the bromance which developped as the series got along...

This book A Tangled Ruse was nice but I didnt like that so much of it was based on a lie... or several lies... Other than that I loved the dynamic those two had and how the mystery resolved finally after this fourth book...

It starts with Mr. Larson making a joke. If that isn't enough reason for you to read this then you haven't read the other books and you need to go do that.

If you like the Beauty and the Beast vibes this is for you!

You understand Luke’s reasoning, wanting to know if a woman could care about him without the title between them. However, sometimes his solitude shows in ways where I wanted to kick his shins - smh!

You know it’s got to be awful for Rachel only being seen as money and power but her bubbly impulsivity contrasts nicely. Her generosity was heartwarming but she sure wasn’t a weak female.

However, Self-Control is a grand skill they both could learn. First, not your horse, no touchy! Second, think before you speak!

It was great to meet the oldest Beckett sibling. And in case you were wondering, I’m jealous of a fictional library in Scotland!

This series just keeps getting better! Every book and couple becomes my favorite until I get the next book in the series and I have a new favorite. I love Beers' style of writing and I love how complex the characters are. Every character has been their own individual and I never feel like I am reading the same stories over and over. Beers' knowledge of the times and customs continues to impress me. I never feel like I am reading something poorly researched and quickly put together. In fact, I come away from every book feeling like I have learned something new about the history and I love the feeling. I don't know how she is going to top this book and these characters, but I have faith that she will and I can't wait to read all about it.

This is another fun Regency ride by this author. The characters featured in this one are Rachel and Luke, Eliza’s older brother. He’s been a recluse in Scotland for years, sick and tired of the ton trying to trick him into marriage to get his title. Rachel’s dad sends her to her aunt in Scotland to keep her safe after a harrowing experience (told in the last book). The couple’s first meeting is rife with tension, misunderstanding, and mistrust…which leads to an awesome plot of how they will come to like or tolerate each other for the rest of the book. Ha ha. This has lots of action, mystery, and a great villain. It’s fun to see the intrigue with all of Britain’s spies in each book. This one was super good.

Nice Clean Romance!

I fear this book has too many impossible scenarios for me to have enjoyed the long, long road to HEA! The Marquee is supposed to be a brooding, handsome, working Lord. However, at times he acts like a coward! Why do that to the hero of the story is beyond me! I like Alpha Male personality types, not men afraid of other men, or worse, his own sister!? To be honest, I should have stopped reading by the third chapter, I plodded on, trying to give the story a redeeming quality, none came. What could have been a unique situation was turned into a farce by the far fetched personality of Lady Rachel, and the two sisters of the Marquis!
I cannot recommend. Thank you!

I love the intrigue and spy elements of these stories, though this one was less well-thought-out than the others have been. The entire plot was fairly obvious at the start and I probably wouldn't have finished if I wasn't reading it professionally. I'm glad to say that the plot and character arcs improved towards the end. This will be a book that delights its fans, even though I wish it had had a little more depth. The books are meant to be fun and full of usual romantic ideals - and this doesn't disappoint in that element.

So, I usually like a strong leading lady but Lady Rachel got on my nerves. Does that make it a well written character? Possibly, but I didn’t like her much. She did acknowledge that her actions lead to the death of David and putting others in trouble although those around her said “it’s not your fault...” Yes, yes it was. Also Luke was equally exasperating with his never ending bad attitude. The story line of the French invasion and that the entire book was set in Scotland was a refreshing change, however.

Delightful

A reclusive, unhappy, distrustful nobleman meets an outspoken, loving, generous noblewoman. Neither wants to acknowledge their underlying lives of privilege so they assume more humble roles. All they truly want is to be loved as people, not people of means. What could go wrong with hiding their identities? Plenty! Throw in a French invasion of England by way of Scotland and you have a tender love story with just the right touch of a spy thriller. Wonderful characters! Delightful story!

Loved it!

I really enjoyed this story! I've loved Rachel from the start of this series and was so excited to read her story!

Lady Rachel and Lord Downshire are the epitome of opposites. She is lively, social and loves adventure. He is a bit grumpy and would prefer to stay at home. However, both just want to find someone who will love them for who they are. After they meet on Lord Downshires stud farm (he accuses her of stealing his horse!) a ruse of hidden identities begins.

Laura Beers did a great job with this one and I look forward to reading the next in the series!

Excellent story, characters, and grammar all in one book!

Laura Beers, cheers! You can write and sometimes knows how to edit.
I just loved your characters, even the lesser ones.
My only peeve was where too many characters came together in a scene and I got lost trying to figure out who was who. I kept reading and most became evident.
I will be looking at your other books after my next read.

Lady Rachel is sent to her aunt and uncles estate after a failed kidnapping attempt in London. Scotland will surely be a safe haven. She goes off far a morning ride and meets a young man who thinks she is stealing a stud from the adjoining farm. She mistakes him for a horse trainer. The ruse is set. They get to know each other and unravel the secrets that the French have planned for the sleepy Scotland coast. Now they have a revolution to prevent.

I waited (not so) patiently for this book to be released. I laughed outloud at the witty banter and some of the situations. I kept thinking about the book and it brought a smile to my face.

Loved it!

This book should come with a warning: do not read unless you have all day to finish it. I couldn’t put it down. There were a few instances where I wished the author would have gotten deeper into the characters’ heads so I could really feel their emotions, but even so, I still couldn’t make myself stop reading. The characters are relatable and entertaining. The plot is similar to the other books in the series, but different enough. Would highly recommend!

You don't have to read the other books to love this one!

I haven't read the other books in this series, but the author does a great job of keeping the reader informed without burdening the prose with cumbersome details. I love the heroine's sweet heart and enjoyed seeing the character growth of the hero. The secondary characters were so well-drawn and real, I can't wait to read their stories!
