Kurtis Matthews is a mystery. His rookie year in the NFL was one of the most inspiring the L.A. Kodiaks had ever seen. He was an unstoppable force that had the fans dreaming of championships and the owners reaching for their checkbooks. Then, just as suddenly as he appeared, he vanished. He was traded away in a deal that sparked outrage both on the field and in the stands. The world demanded to know why, but Kurtis never answered. Not until Harper White started asking.Harper and her crew have been hired to film a documentary for the NFL Network. Following a spectacular season highlighted by Matthews' surprise return, the Kodiaks are primed to make a run at the Super Bowl, and it's up to Harper's crew to capture it all. The practices, the wins, and the losses; the lives of these men as they march toward the ultimate prize. It's her job and her passion to dig deep. To find the answers that don't want to be found. To solve the mysteries that have no desire to be solved.Kurtis is used to dodging the press to keep his secrets, but what can he do when he has nowhere to hide? When the most beautiful, penetrating eyes he's ever seen hold him steady, tearing his defenses to shreds? When once again he finds himself desperate for what he cannot have?Lies and lust can be contained, but love? That sh#t will blow his world wide open.
Wide Open is book three in the Offensive Line series by Tracey Ward. This is Kurtis’s book. Gosh, I love this series so much. With each book, I am getting more and more invested in the lives of these characters. I was really excited for this one. I knew Kurtis had secrets, a troubled past, and was anxious to learn what they were.
Kurtis Matthews is twenty six years old and is the Tight End for the Los Angeles Kodiaks. Kurtis began his NFL career with the Kodiaks. It was a stellar year. Then, for no apparent reason, he was traded. He was gone for two years and then through a trade, was brought back to the Kodiaks. He has been asked countless times by both teammates and by the press why he left. But he keeps his truths locked down. No one but his manager, Hollis, knows what really happened.
Harper White and her crew have been hired by the NFL to produce a documentary on the Kodiaks. They will stay with the team for an entire season, interviewing the players, the fans, documenting the wins and losses. Another crew is doing the same thing with one other team that has Super Bowl potential.
Harper noticed Kurtis right away. How could she not, a man so beautiful. But he was so dark, always standoffish. Always scowling. Rarely talking. Still, when they were near each other, there was a pull between them, a chemistry that couldn’t be ignored. Harper tried her best to deny it though. She had to appear impartial. And having a personal relationship with a player was not the way to accomplish that. But, Harper has her secrets too.
“I’ve never wanted a woman the way I want Harper. I’ve never looked at a woman and found the beauty I see in her. She is celestial. She’s gravity that’s pulling me in, and I’m sick of fighting it.”
When these two give in to what they’re feeling, it’s a beautiful thing. They become closer, their feelings become more. They are both still holding back, though. Kurtis doesn’t feel he can share his truths with anyone. It’s too much of a risk, not to mention that she might never look at him the same way if she knew the truth. But can a relationship be built on lies, or at least, omissions? A relationship without trust?
This was such a beautiful story. I loved these two together so much. They were both so lost but in each other, they felt found. At the same time, we are getting to know the other players better. This team is a family. They love and support each other. Now I can’t wait for the next book, which is a novella, Hollis’s book. I’m so excited because I adore him.
I had no idea, when I picked up the first book, that I would get sucked in so quickly and so completely. Tracey Ward has managed to provide this sort full package sports romance: well researched sports, multi-dimensional characters, romance with emotional depth, and super compelling storytelling. Literally – the full package.
That said, I struggled more with Kurtis and Harper’s story than I did with the others. Part of that is that Kurtis is brooding, closed off, and closed mouthed for so much of the story. I felt like the initial foundation for the romance was physical – and that’s always a tough sell for me. The dialogue is my sweet spot, banter is my catnip, and in the absence of those two things – I struggle to connect. So it took me a long, long time to warm up to these two.
Once it happened though?
Guh. So in love. There is a lot to love about this story. It’s earnest and honest and emotionally rewarding. Even having struggled to connect with the characters, there were moments between them that took my breath away. I didn’t always feel them the way I wanted to feel them, but I still enjoyed their story so much. It’s a bit more serious than the others. It felt a little more intense and where I was looking for smiles and butterflies, I got some heavier, darker emotions and complicated back-stories. But I’m still so glad to have taken this ride.
Toward the end of the story Harper reveals that she feels like the Kodiak team is her family. I feel that too. These boys are so special, so much fun to read, and so ingrained in my heart at this point. I can’t wait to reconnect with them all in the next story! ~ Shelly, 3.5 Stars
3rd book in the series and my least favorite, yet I still really enjoyed it. I had a hard time getting invested in the main couple in this one, which is why it's my least favorite. What saved this book is all the other players who we get to follow from book 1 to this one. I really enjoy their interactions with each other. Book 2, Colts story, was my favorite and he is my favorite player. I've loved every appearance he's made in all three books. I've really enjoyed this authors writing style and will definately keep reading her books.
I didn't like this as much as the previous book, Sugar Rush. In general, I'm not really a fan of the dark, brooding, aloof, borderline rude H. That's probably why this book didn't really work for me. I had a hard time connecting to the H, so I didn't care to find out his big, bad secret...which also unfortunately was dragged out forever. Plus this book is not safe for people who want to avoid reads with details of ow/om. In his inner monologues, he gives enough intimate details of him with ow and it was a real turn off for me.
This book was a little bit of a downer. All the self loathing by the H, his drawn out secret, his debt, his lifelong search for acceptance and love were all really sad. I felt bad for him, but didn't necessarily like him that much. It took him most of the book to be truly vulnerable and I didn't feel like the h wanting to keep the H a secret for the sake of her journalistic credibility was the same as him keeping his secret from her.
Overall, this was an engaging read. I finished it all in one sitting and it was written in a style that I've come to expect from Tracey Ward. I will probably read the next book in the series, but I will wait for others to tell me if it's safe or not before I do.
What I liked: 1) The writing style. 2) The alternating povs. 3) No real ow/om drama. 4) The H was really trying to turn his life around, but it was still hard to have warm feelings toward him. 5) The h was attracted to the H, but didn't feel the need to fall into bed with him right away. And she also didn't need to mention how hot he was over and over again. Thank goodness. 6) The witty banter between the characters. Some of it was really fun. 7) No gratuitous sex scenes. They were pretty tame and I appreciate that.
What I didn't like: 1) The details of the H with other women. 2) This story was sort of depressing and not the lighthearted read I was hoping to read. 3) The H inner monologue got really sappy toward the end. 4) The story ended really abruptly. I feel like all we get is a HFN. There was no epilogue. It was weird.
Can definitely be read as a standalone. Unfortunately the first two books are spoiled if you read this one first, but I don't usually mind spoilers unless it's a love triangle. I always assume a HEA will eventually happen it's the journey IMO. Anywho. I loved this story and how it started out as a slow burn, those are my favorites! There was just enough angst in this story to make it exciting without being OTT! The side characters weren't just there, they added to the story and made you want more from them! Great writing as always by Tracey Ward.
This was great sports romance. The third book in the series follows Kurtis Matthews, a wide receiver for the Kodiacs. Harper is contracted to document the journey to the super bowl. She instantly feels a pull towards the one man that is closed off and broody. A connection that is undeniable. Had good football reference and a great storyline that kept me wanting more! Now I can’t wait for book 4!
I love these characters, the plot, the banter and the fun that the author brings to the story! This is one of my favorite series and I love each of the books so far - it has been a fun, fast read!
Anyone who has read the first two books in Tracey Ward’s Offensive Line Series has heard the name ‘Kurtis Matthews’. Dark and mysterious, he appears and disappears by living on the fringe of the brotherhood he loves. It’s no secret this man has demons. His rookie year at the Kodiak’s saw Kurtis rise to the top. He lived in a bubble of entitlement where fame, money, and women were at his every whim and nothing was off limits to this rising superstar. Until one day, the bubble burst. Traded to Montana, Kurtis didn’t gel with his new team despite his enormous talent. Two years later he returns to his beloved Kodiaks, but the burning question on everyone’s lips is - what the hell happened to Kurtis Matthews?
“You’re a mystery solved in silences, Kurtis Matthews. It’s not what you say, is it? It’s what you don’t say?
Harper White also wants to discover the truth beyond the rumours and tabloid headlines. Harper and her team are following the Kodiaks for the football season filming the documentary 'Road to the Ring'. But Harper is in for a fight with Kurtis who won't let her in that easily. Together, Harper and Kurtis learn about what it means to trust and realise that what you thought you wanted, isn't always what you need.
“No story is ugly. Some are just more honest than others.”
There’s a reason Tracey Ward is one of my all-time favourite authors. She’s an automatic 1-click for me and I don’t say that lightly. She has this ability to write beautiful, heartfelt stories about real characters and real relationships that touch readers and stay with you forever. One minute I’m laughing and the next I’m in awe of her honest and poetic writing. I truly can’t say enough about this entire series. No one does sports romance like Tracey Ward. No one. And although these books are essentially standalones, I urge you to read the rest of the series as well. I promise you’ll fall in love with these Kodiak boys and their journey to the Super Bowl.
"You're a mystery solved in silences. It's not what you say, is it? It's what you don't say"
After finishing the latest book in the Offensive Line series, Sugar Rush I was even more intrigued with Kurtis Matthews and the secrets he was hiding. There is something about brooding men (real or fiction) that women want to unravel and find what makes them tick.
We met Kurtis in book one and just from the few scenes he was first in we knew there was something about this guy that needed to be explored. He's quiet, distant and takes his job very seriously. We rarely get to see a lighter side of him and when we do we're desperate for more.
Enter Harper. She's in a way a lot like Kurtis and takes life at times serious but where he is aloof and standoffish, Harper is open and approachable. I loved their interactions from the very beginning.
"I bet your calves are better." "That's a fool's bet. I'd never take it." "I've seen your calves. I'd bet the farm on it"
Kurtis is instantly intrigued by the sassy beauty and can't stop thinking about her. This is what I loved about this book. Seeing another side of him. With everyone else he had to stand on the sidelines of life in fear of someone knowing too much. But with Harper he wanted to strip all that away and be the man he truly was inside.
Tracey is the master of slow burn and once again she knocked it out with Wide Open. You could literally feel the sexual tension coming off the page and once it hit, holy wow! I love their chemistry.
"I want you to take every last inch of me, every breath I've got, every secret I have until I'm empty."
This book was a lot darker than the previous two and had more heartache for our characters but in the end it was worth it all. This still continues to be my favorite sports romances series and with the way Wide Open ended I am not so patiently waiting for the next installment. 5 Stars!
I was all excited about crawling into bed and reading how things pan out between the MCs. Then...I read two more pages, still waiting to read and then...nothing...the book ends. Wha? Click back a page. Did I miss something? Nope. It's just over.
So..not impressed with the ending and still kind of reeling from it.
But, the rest of the book was good. It's not super uplifting. But, I've been consistently impressed with Ward's use of banter, clever characters and relationships you want to see succeed. I found the storyline similar to the first book with regards to MCs that fall for each other but .
I absolutely loved loved loved this one! Every book in the 'Offensive line' series is the bomb for me but Kurtis Matthews wins it all. I devoured his story. I can't forget about Harper; strong, smart and ultimately attractive woman Tracey sent his way. It's 5stars for me as nothing was out of place in 'Wide open'. :)
Tracey Ward has become one of my go to authors! Her talent makes the characters real and the readers captivated!
Kurtis Matthews comes off as a standoffish kind of guy. He avoids the press. He doesn't share his personal life. He isn't interested in letting anyone close. That is until Harper White. The two hit it off and his walls start to come down. Unfortunately she has walls of her own built.
I love the comfort between Kurtis and Harper. Both deserved much more than they were settling for in life. It isn't easy. The two have hidden from others so long it's difficult for them to open up. And when Kurtis,my heart broke for him. There is so much to this man.
The Kodiak football team is one of my favorites. Ms. Ward writes these guys as sexy talented, who at the center of it all are loving men devoted to their women. Who wouldn't love that?
The story lays hints along the way of the troubles Tyus is experiencing. The ending sets up his story for the next book and what a story it's going to be! I can't wait to read it!
The very sullen isolated player finds his match in the producer of a documentary about two football teams. Enjoyed it and pleased that the secret eventually came out.
This series just keeps getting better and better. Kurtis Matthews is a mystery wrapped in an enigma. He doesn't let anyone get close to him and doesn't share anything with anyone, except his agent, Hollis, who he had to tell his secrets to in order to help him fix his situation.
Now there is a documentary being done about the Kodiaks and Kurtis must agree to speak to the reporters or else be fined for breach of contract. He avoids it as much as he can, but Harper is one reporter he can't stay away from. They have to keep their relationship quiet because of the situation.
Their chemistry is hot, hot, hot, but even still, it takes a very long time for both of them to open up and share secrets.
I love how Tracey Ward doesn't follow the regular formula, meet, insta love, misunderstanding, make up, HEA. Her stories are more the way a real relationship happens with ups and downs and real problems.
Loved it! I have to say, there’s a lot of ambiguity about the race of the hero and heroine in this book. I kinda love that. Let’s me create the characters in my mind. On to the fourth book
I feel like as this series progresses, the sex is getting a skosh hotter but the proofreading is getting massively worse. I'm not sure how much longer I can go on.
I enjoyed this reading, but it was missing something, can't really put my finger on it. Anyway, it wasn't better than Sugar Rush but it was good, I loved the brooding kurtis, he was so sexy.... I loved this unspoken confidence that was oozing from him.....And I love confidente womem like Harper, só it was a good match.
I really admire Tracey Ward's writing. I mean, I read it feeling jealous. She's great at articulating complicated emotional lives. These characters, like the others, have real and interesting inner voices, even when they aren't that likeable. But this book didn't stand up to Rookie Mistake for me. I think that's partly because Kurtis is such an enigma and the his-and-hers secrets are drawn out for so long. It was hard to get a read on either hero or heroine when we couldn't see where they were coming from.
Still, I LIKED this book! And I'll read the next one! The fact that I kept reading despite these reservations means that so much else really worked. I just think they could be even better....

Wide Open by Tracey Ward is the third book in the Offensive Line Series. It was enjoyable and a quick and light read.
Kurtis Matthews is the gorgeous, broody and quiet NFL player that rarely talks to the press or his team mates. He's isolated himself and has kept his secrets as tight as a drum. Harper White is the beautiful documentary producer that is determined to unravel the mystery of Kurtis and tell the story the world wants to hear. Neither expects the chemistry and attraction to the other.
Ward takes us through the chase, budding relationship, unveiling secrets, stubborn arguments, and the daily challenges of the two. Ward adds humor and bantering while broaching serious subjects.
Ward also utilizes the same strong supporting cast that was introduced in previous books, providing consistency and humor to the storyline.
I enjoyed the story and characters. What I struggled with the most was the ending. It ended abruptly and I desired much more. I felt Ward was still building the story and developing the characters when it concluded. Perhaps a more detailed epilogue involving Kurtis and Harper would have satisfied me; however, as it stood, it felt unfinished. Otherwise, it was well written and entertaining.
On the upside, I assume the stage was set for Tyus Anthony's saga next. Glimpses into his story was being told simultaneously through Wide Open, so I'm looking forward to seeing it's conclusion.
Characters? *swoon* A mysterious guy who doesn't ever really talk to anyone. He has his secrets but thinks everyone will look at him differently once they find out. And Harper - a woman who has her own skeletons in her closet. But hers just might prove to be hurtful.
I loved those two, loved the way they were together. I also found the plot pretty interesting.
Oh yeah, have I mentioned that yet?: What an ending!!! Wow, wow, wow! I know some of you didn’t like it and yeah there was a bit of interaction missing between our main characters but it was just a brilliant ending that leaves you with a lot of suspense until the next installment is released. Looking forward to it!!
