What would you do if an evil empress was enslaving the galaxy? Well, kick her ass, free the slaves, and roar defiantly. Well, you would if you were a dragon.
When David Briggs beats the final level of Star Conqueror, that's exactly what happens to him. Gaining the power to become a fire-breathing dragon and recruited by alien freedom fighters, he has one chance to save the galaxy.
There's just one problem.
To stop her, he will have to break the mind control of a million super-hot female warriors, storm a hundred planets, and fight through armies of mechs.
Then again, you know what they say, if you want to save the world, you better bring a dragon.
Please Note: This novel contains a harem. You have been warned.
When New York Times Bestselling author, J. A. Cipriano was in second grade, his teacher gave everyone in class a journal to write down whatever they wanted. Their first subject was to write about something they didn’t like. J. A. chose to write about why he didn’t like writing. His reasoning was simple. He had bad handwriting. Even then, he was destined to be an engineer due to his messy scrawl.
Unfortunately, he found through the course of this little adventure that he actually liked writing. That year was sort of the high point for his writing career because he won a writing contest for the state. He got to go to a big dinner and his teacher was all dressed up.
He kept writing little stories, year after year, and in sixth grade, won another contest. In seventh grade, he broke his arm and got the cast signed by both Dean Koontz and Stan Lee. It is, by far, the coolest cast he’s owned. That was about the time he found video games and anime. His writing turned mostly toward fanfiction until about ninth grade when he wrote his first novel, a small book about twenty thousand words called Revelations. In sophomore year, he wrote two more books to complete the trilogy because he saw Star Wars that year and learned trilogies were the cool thing to do.
He rewrote Revelations during his senior year, and his wife swears it is the best thing he’s written. J.A. is not so sure. Every time he reads it, he cringes, but then again, he hates everything he writes, so there is that.
It was about that time, he got heavily involved in a fanfiction writing group, but that isn’t one hundred percent accurate. It was a world based on a popular anime but everything was created especially for this world. It made it so that every story someone wrote was unique.
Imagine writing a Star Wars novel set 1,000 years after A New Hope, where everything that happened was a distant memory and you get the idea. You have the force, some distant memories of the past, and that’s pretty much it.
He wrote about a million words (863K to be exact) for them before he decided to do his own thing. He wrote another novel. He put it in a drawer. He wrote another one that eventually became the basis for The Hatter is Mad. His next novel was Kill It With Magic, his first real novel. It’s not bad, but it’s bumpy. This is unfortunate because the books get loads better as the series progresses.
Since then, he’s written six more novels, four of which are in the Lillim Callina Series, and one in the Abby Banks series. The other is stuck in a drawer for time undetermined. He’s writing his next book now which is about werewolves fighting mummies in Ancient Egypt. After that, he will move onto Abby Banks 2. The Spy Within will come out in June or July.
J.A. also has three chinchillas. Two of them are grey, and because of this, they are named Slate and Cadmium. The third is named Jet because he’s black, and Jet is old English for black. See, creative. He also has a cat named Turtle. This does pose problems for his two-year-old from time to time.
Star Conqueror: An Epic Space Adventure by J.A. Cipriano is a book I requested and the review is voluntary. I love this author's books! This one is no different. A sci-fi fun romp with action, adventure, lots of fighting, great dialogue, unique characters, and humor. All the things I have come to like in his books. Great job!
I'm starting to worry about these books. They are very hit or miss. I didn't really feel anything from this book. I didn't feel anything for the characters, I didn't feel anything for the plot. Everything in this felt rushed to me. There was no real depth, no world building. Just a dead sprint to the end. I will not be getting the rest of this series unless JAC can figure out how to build out some of these characters and give us more plot.
Seriously, once you pick this book up, you know EXACTLY what's going to happen after reading the first few pages. There are ZERO surprises in this book. Not saying every book needs a pot twist, but this one is so vanilla, that it's not really worth buying imo. I only picked this up because I have Kindle Unlimited. I'd be a bit miffed if I had to pay for this.
This review is for the Audiobook version of Star Conqueror by J. A. Cipriano and performed by Luke Daniels.
We are living in the golden age of fanfic and that's a great thing! Star Conqueror feels derivative of so many genre classics. So many classics that it's almost not worth acknowledging them all. I said almost. So, I'll only name one. The Last Star Fighter (and Ernest Cline's recent TLSF homage, Armada, so that's two I'm naming. Sue me).
What starts off as a VR-fueled nod to TSLF quickly morphs into a LitRPG-styled Space Opera where our protagonist who has been groomed for real-life alien combat thanks to countless hours playing video games.
Star Conqueror is at its best when playing with the video game mechanics and using them in his fights/battles. Parts of this book are really fun and
Where I struggle with this title in the treatment of female characters--all of whom are little more than sexual objects (albeit willing objects) for the protagonist, David Briggs. Not my cup of tea.
What really kicks Star Conqueror up a notch is another stellar performance by audiobook superstar, Luke Daniels. Dude makes everything he reads enjoyable. Daniels takes a 2.5 story (average) and elevates it to a 3.5 at least.
*** Disclaimer: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This was a great trashy pulp SciFi book from an independent self-publisher. Fun, no brainer read with a predictable plot line. I like how the hero is not necessarily the baddest in the galaxy, but with a little help from his harem, does a pretty good job kicking everyone's ass.
The sex is more understated than I expected - I expected a lot of graphic sex as typical in these indy pulp fiction books.
I am still torn as to whether or not I will buy and read the next book. I hate the LitRPG elements in this book which detract from the story. Everytime the LitRPG crap came up it yanked me out of the story. I ended up skipping the LitRPG stuff just to keep with a great story that could have been so much better without the LitRPG.
Our protagonist, David Briggs is a gamer; a gamer so skilled that he is the first to defeat the final level of Star Conqueror. This online VR MMO game consists of stopping an evil empress from controlling the galaxy. Having defeated the Empress David’s character gains the ability to shift into a fire-breathing dragon and be recruited to assist the local resistance movement. What David soon realizes is that this is all coming true in real life and he is taken aboard a space ship of the resistance by the now real life characters from the game. After the initial shock wears off David finds his new environment quite familiar due to the obvious training session of Star Conqueror. David repeats and expands upon his experiences in the game, only now it truly is a matter of life and death. As with Cipriano’s previous series The Legendary Builder, which I enjoyed immensely, he weaves beautiful women and sensuality throughout the story. The sexual romp is well done and entertaining with a bit of humor and good taste. I really enjoy his writing style and look forward to more of this series. This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom.
I’ve made no secret of the fact that I really enjoy this author’s work, and this book is no exception. While LitRPG and sci-fi are not really genres I actively seek out, I trust Mr. Cipriano’s writing enough that I will read anything he writes, including genres I generally won’t read. Of course, like all of this author’s work that I’ve read, this book was well-written, fun, and full of action and adventure. The fun part is one of the reasons I keep coming back to this author. His books are just so much fun. One thing was unusual for me in this book: my favorite character in this one wasn’t the main protagonist; it was one of his love interests, Tulip. I even liked her name. She just struck me as a strong character who knew who she was and didn’t care who knew it. I really liked the other characters as well, don’t get me wrong, but I liked her best. If you are fan of this author or you love action/adventure/sci-fi, you need to pick this one up! Highly recommend! I was provided the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.
David Briggs is a ex-marine and now office worker who does the ultimate and beats the final level of the game Star Conqueror when all of a sudden his life changes completely. He gains the power to become a fire-breathing dragon and is recruited by alien freedom fighters to save the people in the galaxy from the evil empress (just like in the game). However it seems in order to succeed he has to free super hot female warriors from mind control and fight his way through armies of machines.
This was a sci/fi action adventure book of the highest order. It had pretty much everything. I loved the background story of how the whole adventure starts (no not giving that away sorry) and the way the story developed. The characters were definitely 3D and I could empathise and feel their thoughts and emotions as the story developed. There is plenty of action, drama and excitement in this story and as series starts go this one is great. I just need to read the next one now as I just have to know what happens next.
Star Conqueror is an entertaining space fantasy with game elements, a dragon shifter, and a bit of a Star Wars feel. The fun audiobook is brought to life by a terrific narrator.
Alas, this book is for adults only thanks to the sexual content (and plenty of violence too). This is the start of a harem series, so be prepared. (If the author wanted to release a PG version for the kiddos at some later date, it'd probably be quite popular.)
For those who may be curious about the comparison between this book and a popular tiger shifter series, rest assured that while there are certainly similarities and the books appeal to much of the same audience, this is definitely a unique and wonderful book.
Fast, furious (no, really), and fun. This book / series offers up pulp action goodness complete with military science fiction and magic, with draconian legends and a sexy rogue cat shifter. (Because sexy rogue cat shifters!) Spice it up with angelic harem characters and LitRPG elements, and you have a writer who either suggested a book plot while inebriated, collected (all) suggestions from a fan site, or lost a bet. Not that it matters, because overall it’s a win for us. Cheerfully recommended.
I'm very OK with harem, sexual situations, innuendos, comments, thoughts, etc... But it felt like every single time a female looked, touched or even having a sliver of skin showing, the Protagonist had to comment on how maybe she was trying to bang him.
Like in the middle of battle it's "The shot didn't kill her, but left a swath of pale silky skin exposed... maybe I could get a better view of that later..heh, heh, heh..." It got real old quick. Story had a lot of potential, but this is written for gutter-minded teenagers. It was just all too much.
A take off of the builder series unbeknownst to David, the real deal starts now. Recruited for helping get rid of the Matriach dynasty with a space ship and two others throws them into the mix. A new updated reinforced suit with capitabilities that supplement the power needed, plus a special surprise he can now do. Lots of action, neat characters and a good read. I received a complimentary copy of this book.
This is my sixteenth read from author J.A. Cipriano, yes I like this author, but I'm not really a fan of shifter books and there are some aspects of that in this book, but that's me, many people like that. An enjoyable read with some aspects of the FRP genre and many readers like that. A different aspect is basing the book on a video game and then launching it into space. Enough I try not to do spoilers, buy the book, read the book, get into this enjoyable author as I have.
Bottom line: I highly recommend this book solely based on the creative plot line. It has good folk and it has bad folk, all with some snarky dialog. The hero gets his skills and powers in an unique matter but even more fun is the way he is able to build his character with points he gets from fighting the bad folk and triumphing over evil.
I enjoyed this book and recommend it to gamers everywhere.
Ok, this is just a a “quickie” review. Unfortunately, I’m in in a hospital and asked my husband to post this since I don’t have the time to do better - even though the book definitely deserves it.
Bottom line: five stars. This was one wonderfully fun novel and definitely recommended. It had just what I wanted and was well written and with a great plot and great cast of characters.
The beginning brought back memories of the movie The Last Starfighter, with the use of a video game to recruit people to fight for the rebellion. The book puts it’s own spin the recruiting process. The story has video game type upgrades with harem collection going on. Looking forward to read the next book.
I started reading because of Luke Daniels but I was surprised that I liked it and will read the next book whenever it comes out. I would've liked more detail about the beginning because it was a little fuzzy, also doesn't really explain how he became a dragon and how the armour work like in the game.
The Journey of the Hero, the protagonist being taken out of a boring every day life, to join a fight between good and evil, a fight where he has some unique skills that are needed to change the balance.
Its the classic story telling style used in a fantastic space opera setting. An absolutely engaging adventure!
I loved this book from start to finish the author did a great job with the characters and the story. That's why I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars a must to read.
This was a fun first book in the series. We have aliens and incorporated game play in the story. David is a fascinating character and I really need to see how the series plays out.
