Anne Chapter Book #1

Anne Arrives: Inspired by Anne of Green Gables

Rate this book
The charming first book in a new early-reader series, starring the spirited — and outspoken — Anne Shirley as she first arrives at Green Gables.

Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert need help on their farm, so they’ve adopted what they hope will be a sturdy, helpful boy. Instead, Matthew finds Anne awaiting him at the train station — imaginative, brash, redheaded Anne-with-an-e. With her place at the Cuthberts’ at risk — particularly if nosy neighbor Mrs. Lynde has anything to say about it — Anne will have to learn patience, understanding and what it takes to make Green Gables her true home.

Lovingly adapted by Kallie George with beautiful, nostalgic illustrations by Abigail Halpin, Anne Arrives is perfect for new fans of Anne and old.

Anne Arrives is a gorgeously-illustrated book telling the very first part of the Anne of Green Gables story. Just barely long enough to be a real chapter book, this would be a wonderful way to transition from picture books into chapter books.

The vocabulary used is likely not simple enough for new readers to tackle on their own, but this would be a lovely book to read together. I'm hoping that there will be more in this series because there is just so much more Anne to love.

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for providing me with a DRC of this very lovely book.

She had been Anne of nowhere particular for as long as she could remember. It was a million times nicer to be Anne of Green Gables.

An early reader's series, this introduces new readers to the irresistible Anne Shirley. A Nova Scotian orphan that comes to live on Prince Edward Island with brother and sister, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert.

I am a huge Anne fan and I am so glad that these beautifully illustrated books exist.

!! NOW AVAILABLE !!

A wonderful and beautifully illustrated adaptation of Anne of Green Gables aimed at early readers, this book covers the first few chapters. If you’ve seen the Netflix series show “Anne with an E” it doesn’t include everything in the first episode, but covers it, leaving out minor details.

Anne goes to live with the Cuthberts, Marilla and Matthew, a couple who find themselves in need of more help on the farm, and have made plans to adopt a boy. Matthew arrives at the train station, the very chatty Anne-with-an-e is there to greet him instead of the boy they had requested.

He returns to the farm with Anne and Marilla’s irritation over the mix-up, they need a hard worker, after all, but Anne is determined to win her over and prove she can do – and probably better.

When a neighbor comes calling, and comments on Anne’s red hair in a less than kind manner, Anne learns a valuable lesson about apologizing, and being kind.

The illustrations by Abigail Halpin are charming, and the chapters are short enough to keep even young readers attention.

I loved this, and will be buying this for my favourite three-year-old, and the rest of this series as they become available.

Sorry, but with Kallie George's Anne Arrives, it certainly to and for me rather strongly feels as though I am reading not only a mere outline of L.M. Montgomery's wonderful Anne of Green Gables but also an outline which (at least in my humble opinion) does not even remotely come close to presenting and showing Anne Shirley as she is featured and depicted in the original. And no, I am NOT in any way implying that Kallie George has portrayed her adapted Anne Shirley erroneously, simply that the author has chosen to leave out so much of L.M. Montgomery's descriptions of Anne, of Anne's many soliloquies, of her intense loquaciousness that I for one am left seeing Anne Shirley as rather a flat and even totally uninspiring character (for come on, I do not simply want to read that Anne has the tendency to talk a lot and be imaginative, I want to have the opportunity to read at least some of her words, and I am actually both frustrated and annoyingly surprised that basically almost none of Anne Shirley's delightful speeches have been retained in Anne Arrives).

Now indeed, I do realise that Anne Arrives has been conceptualised as, is meant to be an adaptation (and abridgement) of Anne of Green Gables for early, recently independent readers. However and that all having been said, I still honestly do believe that Kallie George has in my opinion pared down Anne (and actually also Rachel Lynde as well as the Cuthberts) to such an extent that one really does not and cannot receive an even remotely sufficient and in any manner enchanting enough portrait and depiction of Anne Shirley, of Green Gables, of Anne arriving at Green Gables and how she must have felt when she learns that there has been a mistake, that she is of the wrong gender. And furthermore, especially Rachel Lynde and Marilla Cuthbert, stripped of almost everything but their unbendingness, stripped of basically any and all character nuances in Kallie George's Anne Arrives, in her rendering of Anne of Green Gables, actually to and for me seem almost (but not quite) as one-sided and as negative as Mrs. Blewett, which I certainly have never even once felt during my repeated reads of L.M. Montgomery's original, as in Anne of Green Gables, even Marilla Cuthbert and Rachel Lynde, although they are of course much stricter than for example Matthew and especially in the beginning of the novel have major issues with Anne's intense imagination and penchant for non stop chattering, are also not ever presented as one dimensional (which in my opinion, I am sorry to say, they both are in Anne Arrives).

I guess that for what it is intended to be (an Anne of Green Gables rendition for early readers), Anne Arrives does actually in fact more than adequately achieve its goals. But personally, I really and truly cannot consider more than a one star ranking for Anne Arrives, as textually, I do feel more than a bit cheated by Kallie George's narrative, and more importantly, I really and truly CANNOT ACCEPT how L.M. Montgomery's name is only very briefly mentioned one time and then just on the removable dust cover of Anne Arrives (and I also do have to wonder and question why Kallie George has not chosen to present an author's note explaining her adaptation choices and more importantly and essentially, paying necessary homage to the original author of Anne of Green Gables, to L.M. Montgomery), not to mention that on an aesthetic and visual level, I have also not found Abigail Halpin's accompanying illustrations all that much to my liking, for to my eyes the illustrator's pictorial compositions, whilst definitely bright and descriptive, also seem rather emotionally stagnant and especially Marilla Cuthbert's countenance sometimes even more than a trifle witch-like and as Anne would say, resembling a Gimlet.

One of two 2018 books by George that she makes clear are not retellings or biographies of Anne of Green Gables but "inspired" but it. Good Night, Anne by George takes the "picture books are for getting kids to sleep" idea and just shares a lot of (beautiful) snapshots (by Genevieve Godbout) of Anne of Green Gables, but you see what she is doing, fangirl of Anne as she is; she is trying to get a new generation of readers to check out Montgomery's work.

Anne Arrives would seem to be a kind of early illustrated chapter book (not a graphic novel), a transition from picture book to chapter books, to see if this might be a way into AGG. And I think this one just might be a good way. Again, it's a short version of the beginning of the novel, hitting on a few high points, filling in a bit of the narrative, whetting the appetite. The illustrations, done by Abigail Halpin, are lovely, as is the whole production by Tundra Press, less the dreamy picture book effects of Godbout, and more of a nod to period illustration style.

One contemporary style version (that I like a lot) (and let me tell you, there are now dozens, yay for Anne with an E!) with bold colors is

I like Anne Arrives and expect George and Halpin will continue the series.

Anne of Green Gables has been around for over 110 years now. Considering L. M. Montgomery's death year of 1942, with the original copyright date of the text, that puts this classic Canadian story in the public domain. It's lovely that everyone can enjoy it for free or inexpensively. Except that it also means everyone and anyone can appropriate any parts of the story or characters for their own use. Anne Arrives is an example of taking Montgomery's beautiful writing and simplifying it down so far that it looses all meaning.

Illustration
The strongest part of Anne Arrives is easily the illustrations by Abigail Halpin. I love the prominent freckles, orange-red hair and petite look of Anne. If nothing else there are some lovely spreads to enjoy if you need a quick dose of Anne's adorable look.

Writing
It's really unfortunate to me that Kallie George has taken Montgomery's gorgeous, classic prose and dumbed it down to five or six sentences per chapter. Anne Arrives tells the story of the first six chapters of the original novel. All the dialogue is in a simple basic, 'See Spot Run' style. I realize that is because this is a book for early readers. However, perhaps it's worth noting that Anne is not really a story that early readers can fully benefit from.
If I pretend I have no knowledge of the Anne story, when I read the opening pages it feels like a very sexist story. It heavily implies that girls can't do chores, can't help on a farm and aren't able bodied enough to be of help to Matthew. Now, obviously time frame is relevant for context and the nuance of the story. As well as it being a small town and an older time period. All of this is lost in this simplified version of the story. I'm not convinced that this is the Anne we want children to first experience and it certainly doesn't feel like the Anne I know and love. My family is from PEI. My Nana (Grandmother) grew up in a farmhouse just a few kilometers away from Montgomery's family home and so Anne was a huge part of my childhood, even though I didn't live there.

Overall
As much as I love Anne I just don't feel that there is any justice or substance to this format and it has no appeal to me. I believe it is worth the delay for any little girl (or boy) so that they can experience an authentic and true Anne Shirley. This beloved classic story is too lovely to put into less sentences than are likely on the first page of the original book.

This is the first book in an early reader series about Anne of Green Gables. This short chapter book covers the first chapter of the novel. I wish this series had been around when I tried to read Anne to my young daughter. It is very true to the original story. The illustrations are wonderful and appear vintage so as not to take away from the time of the story. They do a wonderful job of depicting the storyline. This would make a beautiful story for a parent and child to read together while introducing them to the world of Anne with an "e". Even with this shorter version, the personalities of Anne, Marilla and Matthew shine through. This is a great book to introduce young children to a classic piece of literature. The publisher, Penguin Random House Canada - Tundra Books, provided me with a copy of this book to read. The opinions stated are my own.

I really love all the recent additions to the books featuring Anne of Green Gables. This relatively new chapter book series is the perfect bridge between books like "Goodnight, Anne" in the picture book section and the Anne of Green Gable novels. Kallie George uses spare prose that covers all the highlights giving us a coherent tale with plenty of details to be discovered later. The pictures by Abigail Halpin are beautifully rendered with rich detail. Highly recommended!

Very cute and majorly shortened version of Anne of Green Gables. A great way to introduce Anne to a younger audience but still read the actual Anne of Green Gables novel. As this book is just a tiny snap shot of the story. Anne Shirley is my favorite literary character, she means something special to me.

A lovely adaptation introducing early readers to the whimsical spirit of "Anne with an e".
When Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert need help on their farm, they adopt a boy. Except when Matthew arrives at the train station, he instead finds the talkative red haired Anne Shirley waiting for him.
Marilla initially intends to send Anne back so a boy can take her place. Saddened by the mix up and feeling unwanted, Anne still feels that Green Gables is meant to be her home. While Marilla may be practical and unwilling to tolerate nonsense, she is also kind, and considers adopting Anne if she can mind her manners.
Anne's honesty causes her to clash with the nosy next door neighbor Mrs. Lynde and her stubborn streak could lead to being sent away from the beautiful home she has found. Anne's respect and love for the Cuthberts ultimately lead to a happy resolution. Marilla and Matthew are both charmed by the vibrant young girl and readers will be, too!
For older readers who hold Anne near to their heart, this book filled with beautiful illustrations is a nostalgic return to the beloved story. For new readers, this book is a wonderful introduction to L.M. Montgomery's Avonlea and its classic characters. The short chapters are perfect for emerging readers and the heart and charm of the original story is captured perfectly.
Thanks to Tundra Books and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I just finished reading Anne Arrives and can not recommend this book enough! This is a easy reader version of the initial chapters of the children's class, Anne of Green Gables. Anne Arrives begins with Anne getting off the train and not being the gender desired, just as the novel begins. While the vocabulary and language is easier than the original book, it is by no means boring or repetitive that some easy reader books can become.

The illustrations are simply magnificent! They compliment the story and help with the comprehension of the text. The illustrations that are in the book are detailed and show emotions and era details, such as dress and decor.

This is the book you want to buy to expose your children or grandchildren to the wonderment of Anne of Green Gables. While it certainly can be read aloud over and over, it would be a great book for those second and third graders who love great stories. Every teacher should include this in their own classroom library for sharing.

This book is a solid five stars! A perfect gift for the grandchildren!

Thank you to #NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced reader copy of this wonderful book!

Granddaughter’s tickled pink we picked up our library hold last weekend of Anne Arrives which is also her first Penguin Young Reader! It covers the first chapter of the novel. She’s six years old and had very little trouble reading this to me, has read several times now and says she likes it. With it’s beautiful vintage illustrations and easy phonics it’s a great introduction for younger children into the world of Anne of Green Gables.
We’re looking forward to a second book “Anne’s Kindred Spirits” to be released May 17, 2017.
Here’s hoping her love of reading continues as she grows older! 💚👧🏼📗

This was a delightful picture book/chapter book about none other than Anne Shirley. I thought it would be a good taste of Anne to see how my boys handled her. They loved it! Now I am eagerly awaiting the next ones and wondering how to keep them excited about Green Gables in the meantime.

ANNE ARRIVES
By Kallie George
Illustrated by Abigal Halpin

I never got the chance to read any of the Anne of Green Gables series growing up. This is just the most delightful little book for young children. This is beautifully illustrated. Anne makes it known that her name is spelled Anne with that e. Not Ann but Anne with her two red headed braids she is utterly charmed at Green Gables. They were expecting a boy to help with the farm work.

When this beautiful book is published I am buying several copies and gifting them to the pre school team and Kindergarten teacher that both of my son's had. I am also going to buy one for their first and second grade teachers as they both had the same one. It makes me wish I had grandchildren to share this with, the only problem is both of my son's are two young and not close to getting married. Anybody who reads this wonderful book will love it.

Thank you to Net Galley, Kallie George, Abigal Halpin and Tundra books for providing me with my digital copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I received a free ebook copy of Anne Arrives from NetGalley in exchange for my review.

This is an easy reader version of the first several chapters of Anne of Green Gables. The illustrations are very sweet and full of color that brings Anne and Green Gables to life in a beautiful way. However, I would recommend the original so highly, and as it is already intended for children, I would have a hard time justifying purchase of this book. I appreciated that there were many direct quotes from the classic novel, and I could see using this as an early reader book for a young child.

Anna, sei Casa 🤍🫂

Rarely do I read a chapter book more than once, but Anne of Green Gables is one exception. It's one of my favorite books of all times so when I saw there was a picture book version about Anne of Green Gables I knew I had to read it. "Anne Arrives" is based on the first few chapters of the chapter book and I was happy to see that it follows very close to the original book. I read "Anne Arrives" aloud to my four year old daughter in the hopes of getting her hooked into L.M. Montgomery books at a young age. My brainwashing must have succeeded because she was delighted with the story and was very interested to see if Marilla and Matthew would keep Anne despite their initial hesitation. The illustrations do a wonderful job of depicting the story line and there was the perfect amount of words per page to keep even a preschooler entertained. I thought that this was a great book to introduce young children to a classic piece of literature. Thanks to Net Galley for the opportunity to review this book. All thoughts expressed are my honest opinions of the book.

Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery is a renowned children’s classic and this adaptation by Kallie George is the first in a new series for early readers. While the original Anne is intended for middle graders, Anne Arrives is written with even younger readers in mind.

With its illustrations and simple vocabulary, George has taken the first few chapters of Anne of Green Gables and made them accessible to a whole new audience. Holding this book back from absolute perfection, are the illustrations by Abigail Halpin. Those of Anne and the scenery are lovely, but other characters, especially Marilla, appear overly harsh.

This is a wonderful introduction to the world of Anne (with an "e") of Green Gables. This book covers the first chapter of the book, where we get to meet most of the main characters of the book. Easy to read, and with wonderful pictures, this would be the perfect book to introduce younger readers to the story.

Here is where Anne first meets Matthew , at the train startion

Anne arrives

I love the look on Marilla's face.

Cute introduction to a wonderful series, that is now over 100 years old.

And here is Anne apologizing to Mrs. Lynde for being rude to her.

Excellent illustrations by Abigail Halpin render this version of Anne of Green Gables a lovely, sunny book.

The Cuthbert's want a boy to help on the farm. Instead, they receive a red headed girl with long straggly braids. It is easy to feel unloved and not able to fit in when you have longed for consistency and instead find chastisement.

Shame, shame on the older people, names Mrs. Lynde who simply cannot keep her nasty thoughts to herself, thus affirming Anne's self doubt.

Sharp tempered, Anne must learn how to overlook nastiness and extend a hand of forgiveness.
