Highland Temptations #1

A Highlander's Captive

Rate this book
Rufus MacIntosh wants his family’s birthright back. He’s fought wars and his own personal demons. Time to claim what is his family’s. More specifically, his brother’s. And so, bringing friends and allies, he takes back what is his family’s. The lands are theirs again. Except now, Rufus discovers his brother has abandoned the birthright, the land, all of this. He’s headed to new lands and new worlds.

Rufus should be relieved, he’s no longer responsible for any of it. He can walk away from their ancestral lands. He’s not sure if he wants to.

Davina MacFarland never claimed she was an angel. She certainly isn’t a common thief, even though she’s related to one, now that her brother took Rufus McIntosh’s lands. She shouldn’t have been involved. She really shouldn’t. But now there’s been a scuffle and she’s the captive of that damned Rufus MacIntosh. But she can hold her own. Or can she?

A sweet, enjoyable read

a highlander story that felt more real than fantasy. It was gritty but sweet all at the same time. It felt like a story you hear Grandma tell you when you ask about your family history.

I've gotten so used to reading about the larger-than-life, perfectly proportioned Scotsman, I was starting to get bored. I'm so glad I still opened this book. (update to clarify) This book blew those preconceived ideas out of the water. It was exactly what a highland romance should be in my opinion.
I loved the beautifully imperfect characters. They were real, relateable. Even though the heroine has the usual auburn hair and temperament, she's different in other ways. I get the sense she's not perfectly beautiful, too. Pretty, yes, but not perfect.
The plot was solid, believable, and took me on a wonderful adventure through Scotland.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical romance, Scotland, and/or clean romance.

Take lots of desire for revenge, a little insecurity, add an unbearable attraction, a lot of passion and finally put two sworn enemies within the Highlands .... Yes, this is the perfect recipe for an interesting love story. A story about imperfect characters who fell into the traps of destiny is what will excite you in the new book A Highlander's Captive (Highland Temptations # 1) by Aileen Adams.
A story that mixes the past and the present, the desire for revenge and love, strong enough so everything else can be forgotten and make you jump into the vortices of the raging river, which destroying in its path.
Rufus MacIntosh, brave but defeated by the distance, strong enough to stand up and go into battle to regain what belonged to him and his family. To correct the mistakes that the evil forces inflicted on him without giving him any opportunity to fight back to protect his own. But will it work? Or destiny is toying with him again, when Davina MacFarland is thrown on his path, the personification of all that he hates and wants to destroy. Witty, brave, and yet so vulnerable in that world of injustice. Convicted before she was even born ... A woman, and a woman has no value, right?
He and she…..one against the other…..Sworn enemies who try to avoid the influx of those feelings that irrevocably draw them to each other. Can the rudeness of the words destroy that connection which is increasing day by day? Can ignoring put an end to all those unwanted feelings that haunt them with every look, every word, every careless touch?
Definitely a story worth reading. The plot is quite interesting, and presented to a sufficient extent so that the reader does not get bored, and the characters are solidly built to allow you to experience the story with all its ups and downs.

Rufus MacIntosh, the second born son of a clan leader and natural fighter, is travelling to avenge his parents' deaths and reclaim the land his older brother has been banished from after an attack from the MacFarlands. While travelling towards his home, Rufus encounters a lone woman, injured and fatigued, after being abandoned by her party after falling from her horse. What Rufus doesn't know, is Davina the only sister of Ian MacFarkland.

It wasn't a bad book, I got it for free from BookBub, but I'm not sure I'll read the rest of the series. The books can be read as stand alones or in series, with characters over lapping but no order if needed.

The storyline itself was very formulaic and easy to figure out. There was no shocks, no twists, everything was easy to guess before it happened. It's a very easy read if you want a Scottish historical romance. There are no smut/steamy scenes so if you're after that I would avoid.

The characters do seem mostly realistic, with all having flaws and points to redeem them. Rufus is stubborn and Davina is loud and opinionated. They're near enemies to lovers games are fun but they get a *little* tiring after a while. Like yes wonderful the fact they are at each other throats and push buttons is fun but when it's still happening 60% in and it takes as long to get either of them to admit it's because they care, even to themselves, was frustrating. The relationships, both romantic and platonic, were at odds at times and a lot of very handy plot points appeared just to push the story along, a lot of it feeling too good to be true.

Though I was unable to find anything about this author including a short biography I can say I most certainly enjoyed her book

I loved the setting of the book and enjoyed that our lead heroine Davina was strong and intelligent. I found the chemistry between her and Rufus to be very intriguing. With that said not sure I would necessarily call this book a romance.

When we meet Rufus our hero he is determined to get revenge on the man who stole his property and killed his family. Along the way, he meets the man's sister not knowing it's her.

As they travel long heading to reclaim his lands many things happen. He learns the truth about Davina, his cousin because upset with him and he finds himself falling for his enemy kin.

Though the romance is slow in this book the chemistry and banter between our hero and heroine was fun to see.

Overall I truly enjoyed the book and would be happy to read more by this author.

More of an adventure story than a romance. The romance moves slowly. The hero, bent on revenge, discovers that the young woman he and his friends have rescued is the sister of the rogue they are after. Much of the interaction between the couple is tinged with dislike and hateful words. He keeps her, then, as a captive as they travel towards his old home, now occupied by her murderous brother.
I was not fussed on the constant bickering between the two and his treatment of her, even before he knew who she was.I did, however, like the group of friends. All of the characters were not quite what I expected, and I like being surprised.
The story was well written, although editing errors started popping up in the second half.
Is it likely to be a favourite, no. Would I read another from the same author, definitely.

Enjoyable clean romance

This was an enjoyable and clean romance. Davina was a heroine in need of a happily ever after. Being unloved and mistreated her whole life, it was wonderful that she found happiness with Rufus. Rufus was a good man bent on revenge for the deaths of his parents and the taking of his families home by Davina's brother. My heart went out to Davina when Rufus found out her identity and reacted cruelly towards her but his reaction was a normal one that I couldn't hold against him and that didn't last long as his growing feelings for her began to take over. I enjoy my romances with a lot more heat between the couple but the story had me entertained enough where I didn't miss it that much. A very good book and one I recommend highly.

Good

Davina is abandoned in the Woods by her brother for being injured, while alone in the woods she is rescued by a group of men turns out these men are hunting her her brother for crimes he committed against Rufus. Dacina doesn't tell them who she is or where she comes from and when they go into town someone tells her true identity but even though she's the enemy sister Rufus seems to find some attraction to her and she returns it but it's only he has to get past the fact that she is the sister to his enemy who killed his family can he let things go really ever be able to gather after the crimes committed by her family did to his good book for commend

This mostly clean medieval Scottish tale was short, not overtly with gore, despite a predictable ending. Rufus and his clansmen are after those who killed his parents and on the look-out for his brother in all the fray. Davinia is dumped by her brothers after hurting herself, the same ones whom Rufus is following to regain his land. After being found, much back and forth between the two occur in their adventurous travels. Relatively mild for a Scottish novel, but of course the attraction between the two remains the most prevalent theme. A relatively enjoyable read with enough dialect to be Scottish, however, understandable to readers.

Revenge is a double edged sword!

Rufus was out for revenge. He was going to take back his family’s land. On the way to his home, he and his men happened upon an injured lass. Davina was left to fend for herself.

Their story is not a smooth path but it is a very interesting one. It was hard to put it down. Ms. Adams is a very good weaver of a story. I will be reading the rest of the series and more of her books.

This is my honest review.

Scottish romance

It was wonderful. I love the enemies to lovers trope and they were perfectly paired as both. The banter between the was fun and I loved watching as they grew to care about each other despite their differences. Clyde and Saving are adorable as well as they develop a familial relationship. Enough action to keep the plot moving quickly and your eyes glued to the page.

It was okay read. I felt sorry for heroine. I hated her brothers. and I hated the hero more with the way he treated her. I really did not warm up to hero. I really could not. Yes, you can sympathize with the misfortune in his life but I cannot feel but hate how cruel and mean he was to Davina.

Fairly dull story. Macintosh vs MacFarland. The whole story takes place on the road to reclaim stolen lands. The sister of the murdering thief is rescued by Macintosh but hides her identity. He finds out. Everybody hates her. Then they don't. Then they fall in love and then they kill her brother who tries to kill her in the end. Really a lackluster story for me

The heart wants what it wants

A believable, engaging tale with a variety of interesting individuals and a tug-of-war romance. Family, friendship, revenge, disappointment, forgiveness and honesty flow as merging waves beneath the surfaceof the action. I was hooked before I knew it.

I got this for free. Plowed through it in a couple of hours. It was far less explicit than what I expected from a book in this genre. The plot was engaging, there was a great action sequence when he rescues her from a river, he's realistically tired afterwards, and they didn't drag out the part where she's keeping her identity a secret.

Revenge is a driving force

This book is kind of like a rollercoaster of family semantics, for both families. It also shows the bonds of true friends and relatives. Plenty of action, great characters, well written.

Can hatred for an enemy turn to love?

I truly enjoyed this story, so much so that another book should follow that tells more of their story of them and their clan and children and how they grow and find love. It would be great!

Overall story is enjoyable. Issue is the errors in the writing i.e. place hand in her face; using him/he when the story indicates that they are describing her/she. This is in a Kindle copy of the book.

Great clean romance!!

Loved this story. Almost dying, bantering, arguing, & being loyal are just a few things going on in this book. It became better with each page. So glad it was clean, as I love novels that take place in Scotland.

I am a definite fan of Scottish Historical Romances--which by now I think you may have realized. You just have to love those Highland Hunks and the lasses who get them around their little fingers!! I am sure you will enjoy this one!!

Alls well, that ends well

I gave this book only four stars as I felt it to be a bit to drawn out for my taste. However, I do enjoy Aileen Adams writing, especially the
“ Auctioned Bride”.

Ok

The book was ok, I guess. I did not like the feelings everybody had against her but I guess it's understandable.
