Jonathan Drazen. Gorgeous. Charming. Smart. Rich.

All the ingredients for a few nights of mind-blowing pleasure are right there. He’s made it perfectly clear he can’t love me, and I’m not out to fall in love either.

But I can’t stay away from him. He’s got this bossy way about him in bed. The word “Sir,” falls from my lips, and when he tells me to get on my knees…well, my knees have a mind of their own.

I got this. I can be his slave for a few nights and walk away unscathed.
We get in. Get it on. Get the hell out. Done.

He knows the line between love and lust. It’s right between my legs.

Now, let’s see if that line blurs for me.

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestselling author. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn't pick up she's at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master's degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She's frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn't ever gotten her out of chopping a single cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

I love Jonathan and Monica. That’s it! Their story is so complex, mind blowing and captivating. I was introduced to this power couple back in 2015 and I was immediately a fan of this author’s dark and erotic world. She’s a master storyteller in the BDSM universe and with Jonathan and Monica she excels. I had to read this series again and now with a bonus scene Beat it was truly the perfect ending to one of my all time favorite series. I’m definitely going to miss them.

4.5 Stars!
This is a review of Beat, an bonus story in the Songs of Submission series.

Being reunited with Jonathan and Monica takes me to a happy place. Always bringing a smile to my lips and tingles to other places, Jonathan satisfies in every way. Kinky and domineering as ever, Jonathan remains sexy as all hell.

“When I come inside you, don’t clean up.” He pushed my hips down hard. “I want it dripping down your leg while you’re sipping champagne with that perfect lipstick.”

While kink is a large part of their life, Jonathan and Monica remain strong despite challenges that are again at the forefront.

“If I don’t love you enough after this…” He broke off, unable to finish. “You will.” “If I don’t… you deserve more.”

This bonus story is a quick read but it reconciles a pressing question about their future and cements their commitment to each other. Of course, more of Jonathan is always a good thing. I highly recommend this series!

I revisited my favorite dominant and submissive couple via Audio this time. Christian Fox’s narration brought Jonathan Drazen to life. His performance was perfect and spot on. Jo Raylan took a little getting used to as Monica but by mid-point, I was a fan. Although, I could have done without her singing.

So many great reviews have already been written but will add that CD Reiss’ storytelling and writing is poetry engulfed by a tidal wave of kink.

Dnf at 48% and I was pushing myself to finish before finally quitting. I had high hopes after reading other 5 start reviews on this book. It did not live up to the hype.

Monica was a pathetic and weak character. The instant dickmatism and inability to make a decision around the hero was beyond frustrating. She’s constantly being guided where the men in her life dictate. It was just drama after drama. And sex. Understandably this is erotic romance. But he was playing with her pussy at her best friends funeral. All they do is fuck. And when she has sex with him her logical thinking goes out the window.

It started ok. Got worse. Dragged on. Sorry but it’s a no for me.

Without a doubt, Jonathan and Monica are one of my favorite couples of all time. When I first read the Submission series a few years back, I was completely obsessed with them. They are the epitome of a couple that knows how to make it "hurt so good."

I was fascinated with Monica. Here's a woman that has specific goals in her life that she wants to accomplish but once she meets Jonathan Drazen, and he fulfills the needs that she has, she needs to learn how to balance the two. Jonathan instantly become one of my top book boyfriends. The man has been through a lot, has a lot of "stuff" in his past that isn't quite staying there, but he wants Monica and has found a kindred spirit who has the same desires he has, so how does he make everything work?

CD is a master at writing the erotic and sensual, and it was one of the first series I read that delve into a Dominant/submissive relationship. And all I can say is, is it HOT! Holy wowza, these two people together? Off the charts. But their relationship isn't just sex, there are so many emotions, layer after layer of them. This series is the complete package. Everything I could ask for in a book. If you don't pick up this series and read it, you are missing out on some complex, masterful writing!

Oh, and before I forget. The added bonus of reading Beat at the end? I'm dead. Loved it! This, series, this added material, is why I love to read CD. She's amazing.

Overall 3 out of 5 stars
Performance 3 out of 5 stars
Story 3 out of 5 stars

I think it was a mistake to buy the whole series as an audiobook.

It isn’t a bad story, but listening to it all was too much for me. I enjoyed the first 10 hours or so. Then not so much. Repetitive sentences started to grate, the singing started to annoy. Don’t get me wrong Jo Raylan has a nice (singing) voice, but those songs were awful.

Monica and Jonathon ...no thanks . Unappealing sex and at a funeral ???
This series was so repetitive every page the same thing. Some pages Jonathon was nice and some pages he treated Monica like the town slut .
Just could not get into this only book I haven’t completed. Stopped at 57% and it was torture to get that far

Very Good Series

I loved that all the books were rolled into one. It helped with the continuity of the story. The naughty scenes were frequent and spectacular.

I started reading the story of Jonathan and Monica and am finding myself more and more annoyed with her. I find her to be such a hypocrite - she wants him to trust her, but doesn't show any trust herself. And then she's constantly running away from everything she isn't willing to confront. She breaks up with Kevin for whatever reason but doesn't even show the smallest inclination of explaining herself to him. Honestly, it takes two to tango. Then she finds out about Jonathan's admission into a mental institute when he was 16, won't ask him about it. His ex-wife says something dubious and instead of confronting him she ignores him. Never met such a self-righteous, irresponsible and weak person. NOT A FAN. But we shall continue and see if things might turn.
EDITED: Now that I've finished it, I'm glad I did. Turns out Monica isn't all bad. She really grows throughout the story. And I cried!! I didn't want it to end with Jonathan dying. So glad it didn't end that way. THANK YOU. Well written! So emotional I felt I was part of the story and I wanted to fight for them! I don't want to imagine Jonathan not living until he's 90 years old so in my mind they both grow old together. 5 stars!

Jonathan's love for Monica and her love for him was heartwarming. And her submission to him was unbelievable! The way he made her wait seemed selfish at first but the pleasure he gave was kind blowing!

This is such a great bdsm series (with every book in this edition, plus bonus story) and it was very different from what I normally read a few years ago, but the arc towards the end? You won't see it coming.

Monica and Jonathan's Story Is An Emotional Journey

Monica Faulkner is a strong-willed twenty-five year old. She waitresses for money but her hopes lie in her music. She lives in her estranged mother's home with her best friend, Gabby. She dated Gabby's brother Darren for six and one half years, but ended things while remaining very good friends. He and Monica hover over Gabby, who attempted suicide. They are all in a band together, but when one bandmate is forced to leave town suddenly, it falls apart. Gabby talks Monica into a gig singing old covers at a restaurant, with Gabby on the piano, which turns out to be a great career move because it gets them noticed.

Monica barely gets by from paycheck to paycheck, so she still needs her waitressing job. When she gets fired from her waitressing job by the manager one night, she has words with the owner, Jonathan Drazen. He helps her get a job at his friend's hotel restaurant to make up for his manager's shortcomings.

Jonathan, thirty-two, is a billionaire with a steady flow of women into his bed. His kinky reputation is no secret. Monica had sworn off men for one and one half years, but she can't refuse a hook up with the charming and gorgeous Jonathan Drazen. She knows it will be a no strings situation, so she justifies accepting his offer.

Monica had only ever been with two men before, and ending it with her second boyfriend had been horrible for her self-confidence, killing her musical abilities. She won't allow a man to ruin her again.

Jonathan was married for six years or so, and despite his divorce from Jessica, he is still helplessly in love with his ex and makes no secret of it. The fact that she left him for another man, taking all their friends with her while humiliating him with her exaggerations about his bedroom behavior with her, matters not. He will only ever love her, but he passes his time by enjoying a string of encounters with beautiful women. He drops each one after three hookups, to avoid emotional entanglements on either side, but he is drawn to Monica in an unusual way. He wants to stretch out his time with her. She is inexperienced with a dominant/submissive relationship, but is a natural. Their chemistry is off the charts and he finds himself obsessing about her.

Neither Jonathan nor Monica can walk away after just a few hookups. They have to confront their pasts, however, before they can move forward together. And while Jonathan is older with an established career, Monica struggles financially and her career is just beginning. She refuses to be a kept woman or to rely upon Jonathan.

The first third of this series was great. Somewhat realistic, interesting characters with a lot happening.

In the second third, the indecision of Monica and even Jonathan leaves the reader with a bit of whiplash, but it is still enjoyable to see the couple work through their issues and circumstances. The bedroom scenes were sweet considering the D/S nature of it. As Jonathan told Monica, if it isn't fun, they are doing it wrong.

Which leads to the last third of the series. This was unfortunately not as good as the rest. Here, the bedroom scenes get darker. Although there are circumstances to explain the changes, this change does not ring true, and it was a little sad to witness. Jonathan and Monica really would have benefited from keeping it fun. There were more typos, so there was obviously less TLC taken on it. A good chunk of it took place in a very serious setting and situation, which would be fine, but it began to drag. Following that, there is a brief jump two years forward. It feels like this was the original planned ending of the series. Following this, the story jumps back in time and covers six months of the missing time before jumping forward again. In addition to trying to keep up with the jumps in time, a reflective voice is used which feels out of place with the jumps, like an afterthought. There are a few inconsistencies here as well, such as drinking Perrier when Perrier was being avoided. A small detail, but irritating to reader's because it causes confusion.

Having the complete series in one package is a real advantage. While this version was updated in 2018, I wish the author had taken the opportinity to make some major edits. It was a missed opportinity. The first two parts of the series run chronologically. The last third does not, and that inconsistency interferes with the flow of the story. I would have preferred if the author had taken the time to rewrite, rearrange, and add a little here and there in order to put together a cohesive piece that incorporates all the original material seemlessly. I know there are reasons given for the difficulty of such an endeavor, but with some thought, time, and creativity, it could have been pulled off.

Amazing

I was so happy to get this complete series in one continuous book for only 99c. I have always loved CD Reiss's writing style & darkish subject matter, never disappointed in a book by her. I was very curious about Jonathan Drazen (& his sad situation in it) while reading Theresa & Antonio's wonderful, crazy series recently & snapped up his story as soon as I saw the complete set on sale.

I immediately fell for that hot, dominating Jonathan from the moment he stepped into Monica's path in the restaurant he owned & where she worked as waitstaff. Monica was a hot mess through much of the series, almost out of money at any given moment as she tries to make it as the talented but unknown, soulful singer she was. With her best friend, Gabby, a suicidal pianist, her other best friend & former lover, Darren the drummer & Gabby's brother, they were the band, Spoken not Stirred.

There was alot of drama & never a dull moment as Monica & Jonathan's totally different worlds collide. Jonathan is still hung up on & is still in love with his cheating ex-wife & tells Monica he can never give his heart to another. She doesn't know why she is wasting her time with him if that's how he feels & shouldn't she be working on her career instead of waging a losing battle with Jonathan? His ex-wife doesn't want him back but really doesn't want anyone else to have him either..she is a complete bitch! There are a lot of secrets that Jonathan is hiding from Monica, but will she discover what they are? Will they make her run they other way?

There is much push & pull between the 2 main characters as they break up to make up & break up again. At one point you can see how honestly invested Jonathan becomes in their potential relationship but Monica keeps pulling away even though she has strong feelings for him, she keeps running away from them.

These 2 seem like they should be soulmates, the signs are all there but what will fate decide for them, what obstacles will they face, together or apart. Will his secrets, his family, her career ambitions, his dominance, his ex or hers (2 of them!) cause so much trouble that its impossible to have the trust each needs to move forward together?

This series was very long, almost like watching a miniseries on TV but I wouldn't have wanted it any other way! No waiting for the next book because it was all here to love & enjoy on a binge, which is how glued to it I was. I LOVED Jonathan's patient (believe it or not!), insightful, intelligent, dominant but sexy & tender nature with the flame throwing, dramatic & sometimes coldish Monica. She grew on me but it took far into the book to get me there. The Drazen family is something to behold for sure with Jonathan's 7 older sisters & him being the youngest & only boy, WOW! I'm looking forward to the story of oldest sister, Margie's story, dark horse that she is. I adored how much she loved her baby brother & was willing to go the extra mile for his happiness. There were some really sad moments where the tissues had to be handy. They were explained so realistically with how hopeless & frightened someone might feel in that actual life crisis & what feelings followed it. This series is a wholehearted RECOMMEND for me. I LOVED IT, sad it's over now. I hope other books lets this one live on alittle longer! Hard to let it go!

This is a collision of music, art, BDSM, dominance, submission, possession, obsession, guilt, unresolved love, unforgettable sex and memorable characters.

CD Reiss masterfully weaves a plot full of mystery and suspense while giving us erotic love scenes to rival all best selling books in any genre.

I fell in love with Jonathan from the first. Just like Monica, this man was so real and mysterious that he immediately gripped my heart and did not let go. I adore Monica with her sarcastic view of life and quick wit. She is a survivor and fighter. She deserves to succeed. The way the story evolves, her path to success and a happy ending is not a given and is fraught with obstacles.

I became very emotional while reading this series. I have to admit that I experienced every emotion possible to a human being while I devoured these pages. At the end, I was sobbing relentlessly, unable to control myself. I had no clue how CD Reiss was going to end the series and I must tell you the ending will ... surprise you. I did not expect it after reading all the installments.

NO SPOILERS HERE! This is one of those series that any reader of romance and erotica must read. It is unique in the quality of the writing and its plot line. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a superb book and loves life.

I did not realize how much of a seesaw this book series was when I picked it up. Maybe I'm just not wired that way, but I found the characters extremely emotionally driven, which made them hard to relate to. For me, there were a lot of moments that left me vaguely unsettled and wrung out. It was sort of a stressful read--not emotionally draining the way a very good but sad book is, but rather like how your neck would get a crick if you were to sit too close to the net at a tennis match. I would not describe this book as a good model for consistently healthy bdsm.
On the other hand, some moments were very well written and evocative. At the end of the day, I can understand why some people really like this book series. I just don't think I was the correct audience for it.
In general, the book left me somewhat unsettled and unsure how to feel. Although to be fair, I am still thinking about the story long after I finished, so it did leave an impact, and maybe that's enough. Someone who has a greater tolerance for dramatic stories may enjoy it more.

Where do i start? Editing was good, very few flaws. Loved, loved, loved Jonathan. Really disliked Monica a lot of the time. I think the story was good. My biggest complaint was that this three book bundle had a TON of fluff. There is almost an entire book dedicated to Jonathan being sick in the hospital. The author put a lot of unnecessary drama in the book, starting with Gabby, Kevin, Darren, Jessica, Sharon, Declan, etc. It just felt drawn out. The break-ups were unnecessary as well. The story itself, when you take out the drivel and focused on Jonathan and Monica was so lovely. Jonathan was one of the realest characters that i have had the pleasure of reading in a long time. I didn't necessarily like the 'bruising' every time they had rough sex. And totally against what Jonathan said he was interested in. If it was cleaned up and toned down, this book would totally be a five star for me.

My favorite couple in books...

This series is incredible. I had the good fortune to read this as CD wrote it & now I have about 4 or 7 copies of the books separately & collectively. She is an incredible writer with a very distinct writing style that captivates, entertains, and envelops you. The epilogue/bonus to the series couldn't have been more perfect. It just wasn't long enough!!! For those who don't read books that involve this kind of "kink", it's not what I'm into either but the story is a million times more than just that. Everyone loves differently and this book is an embodiment of that!!!

This is my first I believe from this author but it won't be the last. This book is amazing. I hated to put it down but because of the length of it I had no choice. This series is so beautifully written, the plots and the characters well developed, it felt real to me. The ups and downs, the twists and turns, I enjoyed the ride every single minute. The beautifully written love story was so magnetic, so flaming hot I wished I was the character. The sex scenes so intense i didn't want them to end. There was also a few emotional parts too so keep the Kleenex close. Fantastic series!!!

Great beginning

I enjoyed the first 2 books but I thought the direction of the 3rd book dramatically changed the energy of the story. I felt like we metaphorically lost our hero and never got him back -although it felt as though the author’s hand sincerely tried to break him, then resuscitate him-It felt sad and no longer as enjoyable as the first 2 books. I felt there was so much potential. Sigh.

WOW!!

i really, really loved these! Even though sado-masochism is not my thing, the way this is written it becomes only a PART of the story and not the REASON for the story. What is showcased to me is the love of the two characters, unconventional as it is. Gives me a different perspective on the lifestyle. If you are open-minded and willing to see the love and not just the sex, then read this book! Thank you Ms. Reiss for a great read.

Even a dominant has weaknesses!

I truly enjoyed Jonathan's journey in this series. I personally had heart surgery when I was a child. I have the same scar on my chest. I had a lot of his fears. We always expect the dominant to be strong and in charge of everything in their lives, but even they get sick and face weaknesses. I felt Jonathan on a more personal level. Great story & I can't wait to start the series about his sisters.

I purchased the Complete Submission 2018 edition just for the exclusive snipit from what may be my ultimate favorite CD Reiss series, the Submission series. And, Johnathan, my Jonathan did not disappoint. I love how fiercely and passionately he loves both his wife and his daughter. I always want more of his story so thank you.
