In 10th century Scandinavia, a man's place in society depends on others' perceptions of his physical strength. One young woman, Aesa, longs to change that by raising a son who will demonstrate the value and power of gentleness to their community. Her quiet plans are disrupted, however, when a band of raiders slaughters the men of her village and takes loved ones captive.
Now she must convince a reluctant group of untrained women to break taboo, leave their village undefended, and risk slavery or death to battle for their families.
