Val is an accidental author! She started writing in 2010 when she realised the family history research she was working on would make a great story.
That story ultimately turned into The Ambition & Destiny Series, a five part series with a short story prequel.
By the time that was complete, Val had developed a taste for writing and began a series of historical cozy mysteries - Eliza Thomson Investigates.
Prior to writing, Val trained as a scientist and worked in the pharmaceutical industry for many years. In 2012, she set up her own consultancy business, and currently splits her time between business and writing.
Born and raised in Liverpool (UK), Val now lives in Cheshire with her husband, two daughters and a cat. In addition to family history, her interests include rock music and Liverpool Football Club.
You could say that we have come full circle with the last of the books in the saga. This is now the story of William-Wetherby and his brother Charles and still features the villain of the piece, Mr William Wetherby himself, who is old, ill but still around enough to cause heartache and mischief. After all that he has orchestrated, one cannot help but wish he died sooner rather than later, but he manages to outlive so many of the characters in the saga, characters who are more deserving of living than he!
As always, another brilliant offering from Val McBeath. I have read all the other unput-downable books before this one and you do need to do so in order to follow the storyline. A well written opportunity to visit the days of yore where people's lives were so vastly different, especially women's lives, a true eye-opener, thoroughly enjoyable read. I was given an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
I have read all the books and they are very interesting and well written. The stories flow as easy as a river. I felt compelled to keep on reading about all those very credible characters. I agree with the author that my favorite one was Harriet and then Belle. Both women were not afraid to stand up for themselves, they also loved their husbands and children very much and did everything they could to help them and protect them. I will be looking forward to read more books from this author.
This is the conclusion of what has been a most engaging family story. Whilst reading about the family the attitudes of the day are brought into play, particularly the attitude towards women. It also shows how the different upbringing affected these attitudes. I think the previous stories in this series need to be read, to enable the reader to obtain the overall picture of the family relationships and intrigues.
I hate that this series is over. It is so wonderful could not put it down. As a amatur genealogist it was especially interesting. So many twist and turns and so emotional and real. So many hardships with very little happiness. I would highly recommend this series.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy supplied at no charge by the author/publisher. This is Book 5 and the final in The Ambition & Destiny Series and follows the story of William-Wetherby Jackson & his brother Charles. Charles had taken an apprenticeship at sea & Willian-Wetherby has been blackmailed into leaving Birmingham. So William-Wetherby seeks his brother & ends up in Liverpool. The brothers catch up & William-Wetherby is encouraged to join the police force whilst Charles doesn’t like sea life & goes into business. William-Wetherby meets Bella & marries her but Bella doesn’t know anything about his former life, which eventually makes its way into their lives. Due to their financial state William-Wetherby takes any opportunity for promotion to earn more money & goes undercover to catch a gang from Birmingham. This impacts on his future. This book does jump around a bit which I found a bit disconcerting at first, but to tell the stories of both William-Wetherby & Charles this needs to be. An enjoyable read & it was good to know how the family evolved & the legacy that Mary left her family.
Absolutely brilliant. All five books . Loved all of them. Best ive ever read. Wished the story didn't have to end. Loved the characters even the nasty ones. I'm so glad i found this story. Fantastic History.
I have finished reading the last book in this saga. With the death of the character Mr Wetherby I feel the story lost some of my interest. The other characters didn’t hold the saga for me. All in all it was a good story
Excellent set of books enlightening me what a life of hardships for families in the Victorian age. They had .beautifully written i will recommend to my daughter in law who lives to restore family history Thank you v l Mcbeath i hope they may be more to come
Well deserved 5 stars. Loved each and everyone of the books in this fabulous series. Feeling a bit bereft now..That to me is when you know you've had a wonderful read. I'll miss all the characters. Cant wait to read more from this author!
The last book of the series, I enjoy each book. During the 1800's, in England during the Victorian Era. A wonderful book that ties all the ends together following several generations. An outstanding author!
This book in the Ambition and Destiny series deals with the lives of the children of Willam and Harriet. Their lives are still influenced by Mr Wetherby. William Wetherby is forced out of Birmingham and moves to London where he marries and joins the police force. Charles is not happy at sea and moves home to Birmingham and starts his own business. Eleanor and Martha get married but Florence brings disgrace to the family. History seems to repeat itself with the Jackson family. Mr Wetherby’s death is not the blessing William-Wetherby and Charles are looking for. Heartache and loving care is present. Great history of family life in the late 1800’s early 1900’s.
I was enthralled through all five books in this series! I loved the intertwining of family members lives, I wanted desperately for Mr Wetherby to see the mess he created before he died and suffer! But all in all a wonderful story.
Really enjoyed this series. Bought books before I finished the last one. You do not want to put them down. You feel the pain and happiness of each character.
An Amazing Generational Family Saga Comes To An Epic Conclusion! Overview: Inspired by a true story, Different World is the final book in The Ambition & Destiny Series, a five part family saga set in Victorian-era England. In this final chapter, William-Wetherby seeks a new life far from home after a bitter family breakdown. But, being rid of his controlling and overbearing step-father, Mr Wetherby, isn’t as simple as it seems.
Master storyteller, VL McBeath, approaches the final chapter of her incredibly rich and descriptive Ambition & Destiny Series with as much historical detail and accuracy as the preceding four chapters, presenting her readers with all the pomp and circumstance, trials and tribulations, struggles and scandals, we’ve all come to expect from the fractured and polarized Wetherby family. The author inserts her characters within the tapestry of Victorian England with great care as she brings to light the important issues of the times, focusing particularly on the struggles of women in regard to self-governance and independence, family dynamics, mental and physical health, and their overall place in society while simultaneously demonstrating men’s demeaning and oftentimes callous attitudes toward their plights.
This tale can be categorized as absorbing, compelling, inspiring, and suspenseful, but it is anything but mindless and boring. Over the few days it took me to read this particular installment of McBeath’s series, I found myself scrambling to pick up this amazing read every spare moment I could.
As is standard for VL McBeath’s Ambition & Destiny Series, notes about customs, politics, currency, and ethnicity, along with genealogical charts describing the characters’ places in the family, greet readers at the beginning of the story, providing a quick review and introduction to the world of the Wetherby family. The author also includes a quick and helpful recap of past events in order to orient the reader as to where this epic tale last left off.
At 680 pages, “Different World” is certainly a hefty read, but big books have a way of pulling readers into the lives and times of their characters that short stories often miss. Every moment of this absorbing final chapter in The Ambition & Destiny Series is crucial to wrapping up VL McBeath’s amazing family saga, and I, for one, am truly astonished at not only the depth and span of this story but the brilliant, well-rounded characters this author has developed based on her own family records. I cannot say enough about the high quality of McBeath’s writing, the introspective nature of her characters, or her focus on women’s plights and rights during the 19th-century. I highly... HIGHLY recommend “Different World”, and the entire Ambition & Destiny Series, to romantics and history buffs ages 17 and up.
Readers Note: The Ambition & Destiny Series consists of 5 books that form one story. Each ends with a crucial cliffhanger, thus it is recommended that the series be read in sequential order. These books are written in UK English, adding to the richness of the dialogue and text.
