It was your typical sixteenth birthday... Until all spell broke loose!

Cool party? Check. Boy of my dreams? Check. First kiss? Not so fast.

Because that’s when I discovered I was a witch. And not a very good one.

Just ask Peter, the ghost I can now see haunting my bedroom, or the zombies I accidentally raised from their graves.

And then there’s Fletch.

Gorgeous

Broody

Werewolf!

And he wants me to lift his curse.

Am I ready for this? No.

Do I hesitate? No.

Does it go well? Big fat No!

And now, instead of being at the party, I’m dancing naked on the town common with a coven of witches and my new familiar, in a race against time to put things right.

Sounds crazy. Is crazy. But I kinda heart crazy…

How to Flunk MagicElena Bryce
Emily Rand turns 16 and is in for a shocking surprise when her witch powers begin working at midnight on her 16th birthday.

Things have become weird and different for hr because she is now able to experience many magical things and paranormal creatures that she could not before. She can now talk to animals and they can answer her back, and she an see ghosts and can interact with werewolves.

Her magic and lack of knowledge of it land her in big trouble like when she summons the dead and has to call the coven into action and dance naked in the park to get them to back off. The powers also get her into trouble as she tries to help the magical and paranormal creatures around her.

This is qu[ck, fun read. I look forward to reading the rest of the novels to see how Emily progresses in her magigal knowledge.

A Charming Story, in the mode of "Sabrina:The Teenage Witch" and, well, "Charmed."

An excellent little story that suffers the obvious flaw of these type of stories. Why do the adult witches in Emily's life wait until the day she is getting her Powers to tell her about them and try to prepare her for their advent? It is a standard trope in many fantasy stories, whether, book play, movie, or song, but it is arguably the stupidest possible way to deal with a young witch's, warlock's, sorcerer's, psychic's or Jedi's introduction to their powers! Surely it would be more sensible to start preparing for the advent of powers several years before the time said powers are expected to manifest, but that is rarely done. I suppose because it would be less dramatic, despite the reasonableness an logic of the early training approach, and thus the reason for the current popularity of the trope.

Regardless, Emily Rand is an engaging character in an entertaining story and a good read for those who like these kinds of YA literature.

I loved these books! Emily was turning sixteen on Halloween and she was getting a very special present. Her witch powers would be coming forth. Of course she didn't believe it. Her Aunt Iris ran an occult shop but she thought it was all fake. She finds her all the females in her family were witches. Emily will turn out to be one of the most powerful of the all. But not without a lot of mishaps along the way.
She meets Fletch in book two. He will turn out to be a very important part of her life. Both their families don't want them to see each other. The will have a bond that will be unbreakable and will save them when they need it most.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Teenage angst and witchy power - a dangerous combination!

It's the day before her 16 birthday and she certainly never expected her aunt to tell her that at midnight she would get her witch powers. Just like the rest of her family. The whole thing is a bit hard to swallow but she starts believing when she wakes up and spots a ghost sitting opposite her. Raising zombies, throwing blasts, encountering a werewolf are just some of the things she has to contend with. Added to the normal girly stuff such as boyfriends, make up, clothes and kissing. A good read but from the blurb I did expect something more. It really felt like two stories melded into one. The characters are good. Okay she's a bit self obsessed with her own feelings and wants but again just like a normal teenager.

Emily's aunt is a witch. Emily is about to turn sixteen on Halloween. Her aunt tells her she's going to be a witch which causes Emily some concern, to say the least. Just after midnight she spots a ghost and the changes start.

First, she needs a familiar. Every witch has a cat familiar, right? Nope. Emily's is a crow. Bob, the crow. It also turns out Emily's magic doesn't always work the way it's supposed to. The ghost? She accidentally makes it physical. Not only that but, at the same time, she manages to raise the dead from the graveyard (only males, though.) So now she has an obedient zombie army.

A lot for a girl to deal with on her birthday.

Then there's this werewolf. He wants to separate himself from the wolf part of him. What can go wrong? With Emily's magic, almost anything.

It's a really cute book.

What a fun read.

The first book of this YA series introduces Emily, who finds out that she is a witch on her sixteenth birthday - Halloween. Unfortunately she hasn't received guidance as her powers manifest and that leads to a series of comical and endearing events.

The characters are immediately relatable and the manner familiars are introduced seems entirely plausible in the world the author creates.

Of course where there are witches, there are werewolves. And sometimes boyfriends. That can make for a complex social life which Emily learns to navigate throughout.

Took about 4 hours to read cover to cover and am looking forward to the delivery of the rest of the series.

Not being a tween or teen, I don’t normally read teen fiction, but I came across this title and decided to try it, and it was very entertaining! Emily made for a very sympathetic character, and Iris, Fletch and other significant characters in the book were people you could identify with. There was a good amount of tension and suspense for the subject matter, but not too much, and the love story was very sweet with just a hint of adult intimacy. Overall, the story was a good balance between characters and circumstances, and I enjoyed it! I’m off to read book 2 of the trilogy!

Emily Emily Emily - how great you are! Way to have destiny creep into your life as you are trying to navigate being a teenager!

I love that she tries to do what she thinks is right and help those around her. I wish her ghost friend had stuck around for a little bit, he would have been a great side kick long term along with her familiar.

I guess I love the pull of opposites, and what one is told is "not allowed". It draws you into the story wanting Emily to get what she most wants despite what it could mean.

Adorkable

A fun read of magic going wrong. This book reads like how I imagine a real life witch would handle magic. Not everything will go right and you have to learn to be yourself. Plus the boy was swoon worthy.
My only problem is that it is very british. The terms and writing are sometimes very difficult to understand.
Perfect KU read that will make you smile if you enjoy paranormal Rom coms.

How to Flunk Magic

This is a Young Adult book, but the story is a fun read for adults, too. However, it is also Happy For Now, leaving their relationship up in the air for now. And having two boyfriends, although one was human and one not totally, is not something I would want to encourage young, impressionable teens to consider to be okay.

What a great read

I opened this book and it just grabbed me in. Emily turning 16 and getting her powers, finding a ghost and then a werewolf. Fletch and Emily, hmmm they were great together for the short time the had, then Emily’s attempt at magic put everything upside down.

Very sweet read and very easy to be pulled right into the book!

A witch and a werewolf

Emily is surprised to find out that she is witch. She goes from interacting with a ghost to a werewolf. Too bad her magic seems off kilter, and why is she so attracted to the werewolf. Waiting for more.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. I feel like an old weirdo reading this teen series but the characters are well developed and the plot moves quickly enough to keep me interested. I immediately downloaded the second book.

Cute cozy mystery

More suited to YA. E,
Miley turns 16 and comes into her witchy powers. She has a familiar, a ghost in her bedroom, and a stalker werewolf.

This fun book reads like it was once several shorter, but still connected, stories - a short story and a novella, maybe. Anyway, as one reviewer said, it is indeed 'adorkable'! 4.5 stars.

The hook is set

Yes, she is new at magic but she takes to it like a duck takes to water. We all make mistakes, it is how we learn. Magic is no exception ...
