As I continue my research into the 1920s I found this to be one the books you should read first. It’s a nice overview of the decade and it did have some information I need to explore further. I find it to be a useful summery of the Jazz Age.

Kindle Unlimited, this particular era has of course been of interest to different people for different reasons, to me personally due to certain writers and mystery books and videos being set in this time frame.

To me the main thing in this book is how it shows just why the United States became an isolationist country for decades. The effects of being in the first world war were major on all the countries involved, including the United States. The twenties were sort of a reaction to the horror of the last part of the 1910's.

The U.S. had problems with strikes, the perceived threat of Communists and immigration (which was reduced.) Much worse problems included Prohibition and the rise of gangs and leaders such as Al Capone, Buggsy Malone and others. The KKK became active, there was a back-to-Africa movement and, of course, the stock market crash. Chicago became a very dangerous town with bystanders killed in gang wars. There was also the Scopes Monkey Trial.

But, on the other hand, there were lots of good things in that time. Henry Ford got the mass assembly of automobiles going. Eliot Ness got a team of lawmen together to try to get a handle on the gangs. This was considered the Golden Age of radio. Silent films were still going but were giving way to 'talkies' and actors and actreses became famous.

There was the growth of spectator sports such as baseball (with Babe Ruth) and boxing. Charles Lindberg became the first person to fly the Atlantic Ocean non-stop. Louis Armstrong made great music. The Negro National League got going (since blacks were not allowed in 'regular' baseball.) Bib business to going.

It was a very interesting time, indeed.

A very short encapsulation of the decade. The audiobook ran only 2 hours. It’s a nice encapsulation of the era — focused mostly on politics and the great people (mostly great men).

It read to me very much like a high school textbook chapter about the 1920s. Enough details to give you a full picture, but not enough depth to make you feel like an expert or to go into any kind of thoughtful depth.

For someone looking for a quick overview of the era — or reviewing for an exam — this would be perfect.

It just didn’t capture the spirit of the era for me. I didn’t get a sense of wild hedonism of dancing the Charleston or the thrill of waiting to hear if Lindbergh was going to make it.

Loved it,

I’m a millennial curious about history and in particular the legend of the roaring twenties and how it led up to the Great Depression. This book gave me a rich and full account of it all. I finally feel like I understand what that entire era was about.

I enjoyed this book a lot. Not too long. Not too short and beautifully written.

The book was a bit disappointing, which is surprising because I have loved all the other volumes I have read so far. I felt too much of the social history was left out. There were great changes to how people lived, dressed, thought, entertained themselves , etc. some of this was briefly touched on but alot was left out.

This is a brief overview of post WWI and the 1920s. Most people think jazz, flappers, and maybe the beginning of Prohibition when they think of the 1920s, but there’s so much more history to it than that. There’s especially so much relevant and parallel history to what’s going on today.

Show a little respect plear

A question as to why Louie Armstrong's first name was omitted but every one else mentioned in jazz you used their full name like Jelly Roll Morton.
You didn't even mention "Satchmo" as his moniker.

Most of the books I have read in the “Captivating History” series have been pretty good. However, this one appears to have been written by a committee and on a junior high level at that. It seems obvious that several writers wrote the book and combined the chapters. This may explain the repetitive nature of the flow of the book because the
broad facts about the 1920s as written were repeated and stated time and again. I read this book while back, and thought it was pretty good. However, I have re-read and have revised my opinion.

A few inaccuracies of the 1920s as written in this book were down right wrong. Especially when it implied that the Golden Age of radio was the 1920s. Any resource on the subject would document that the Golden Age of radio was between 1930-1940 and not the 1920s as stated in the book. The 1920s was when radio broadcasting was finding its footing. Radio would not penetrate the American home fully until the 1920s. Also, it was stated that President Calvin Coolidge lost the GOP nomination to Hubert Hoover in 1928. Wrong. Coolidge decided not to run for a second full term in 1928. Are you kidding me? Where is the editor and historical proof checker for this series? Because of these blaring errors this book receives a one star.
