That’s what I’m talking about!! This was such a good issue! This entire issue revolves around Vic being buried in the ground by the group of paramilitary fanatics, with only his head above ground. While talking he struck a deal, if he can last longer than their leader did then they will let him go. It’s a test of strength and he claims his men are honorable. Their entire ideology revolves around honor and making sure it isn’t utilized poorly, which is why they killed bravo team and those army recruiters as they don’t believe their interests and morals were in the right place. But to keep things to their playing field, they won’t tell Vic how long he has to stay in the ground for, instead opting to carve the amount of days on the stump behind Vic, just out of his sight.

Throughout this issue we also see the start of Myra’s campaign. She hired a tough well known campaign manager that needs the small time work desperately after being arrested. And it’s starting off terribly, every topic she plans to have papers in the next few weeks, but the biggest thing for her to face are perverse reporters that start asking about her child, and why she didn’t marry the father, and how many relationships has she had. All to make her look out to be something she isn’t. She is in the public eye now and they want to rip her apart.

Meanwhile, while Vic is stuck in the ground he is continually approached by two of the fanatics. One of them doesn’t want to see him succeed, he taunts Vic with food and stupidly reveals aspects of their plans to him. The other is fair, he wants to make sure Vic has the proper playing field. Their leader was stuck in the ground during the warmer months, Vic is stuck during November. The man puts a hat on Vic’s head and lights a fire near him to make things somewhat fair. As Vic is stuck in the ground he continually reverts back into his mind and the struggles he has had before during his time at the orphanage. Specially remembering to a tough nun that would lock him in the dark, and that he eventually beat by being tough himself.

One seat that especially shown through for me was a night when it was hot during the day and then a cold flash and rain at night. During the night Vic flight through all the loneliness, stickiness, itchiness, the insects, the thirst, the headache, and the inability to move! He fought through all of it and then when the rain started he sunk deep inside of himself and slept. That night we are presented with a dream of Myra on show, performing a strip tease in front of a group of perverse men yelling at her to take it off and show her everything. At times I thought that Vic might be part of this dream, and we see as a Myra wakes up in fright from experiencing it. And then we see as Vic’s face mask finally peals off due to the temperature change. This was such a great scene that effortlessly showed how perverse and unforgiving politics can be for a woman, while in a way further reinforcing the readers fear about Vic’s mental state and the way he has started to see women recently. Nothing awful has happened, but Vic has started to make comments recently that can grown concerning.

But the end of this issue is really where things take off. Vic’s face is now revealed and the honorable man told him he doesn’t have long. Although he can keep a straight face, this really starts to get to Vic and he really starts breaking. To the point where he stared down a scorpion crawling to him and had a conversation in his head…he realized that toughness won’t get him through this like it did with the nun. In order to beat this challenge he has to fully accept it, let go of all the discomfort, fear, and pain and cherish it! The more dishonest of the fanatics found Vic with the scorpion crawling on his face, and now that he can see it, it seems he recognizes Vic as a reporter.

The next day the leader came by, sprawled a line of bullets in the dirt and had a conversation. It’s been 74 hours, after 74 hours for him he was screaming and begging them to dig him up. Turns out some CIA men thought he was selling supplies through the black market. He confessed and they shot the Asians they thought he was selling to, but he lied they were all innocent. And then comes Vic, “a tough guy….you see a chance to prove that what you went through would break any man. I’m sorry I had to disappoint you. I know some things you probably don’t. They helped.”

But the time has finally come, it’s time to dig Vic up, he won. But now we come to a crossroads the dishonorable and honorable man are having a disagreement. One doesn’t think they should let him go, he’s a reporter and he knows too much. The other claims he won, he completed the task and they are honor bound to let him go. Instead of making a choice the leader decides to let the two fight it out. The dishonorable one is able to stab the honorable one in the gut, only for him to turn around and bash the dishonorable man’s brains out with a shovel. Upon this fight concluding the leader takes his ride and turns it on himself, and the other men follow. In his dying breaths while bleeding out the honorable man digs Vic out of the ground. It’s over.
