It was supposed to be just a dirty weekend away, Brian and Aimi, the Helsing and the Oni-Hunter, enjoying a bit of sight-seeing, drinking and, more than likely, a little rumpy-pumpy in the Egyptian sun. Just a bit of simple fun, as his predecessor had often enjoyed, to take his mind off the looming Cthulu-sized problems on the horizon. And perhaps it would have been simple.
If it wasn’t for the mummies.
He should have expected it to be fair; wherever Brian trod monsters came crawling out from the woodwork. Such was his lot in life, as both the unluckiest guy in the world, whilst simultaneously being the Helsing, tasked with fighting supernatural horrors wherever they might be found.
But Brian had grown since that first day all those months ago. And when Imhotep the Sorcerer summons his undead hordes to bring the world into everlasting darkness, he reckons without a seriously pissed-off Brian and his ninja friend-with-benefits.
Brian did not pay for a five star room at an all-inclusive resort, only to be eaten alive by scarab beetles. Oh no. And so, without Bertha, without his weapons, and with very little idea what he’s doing, Brian goes full Helsing and really lets rip, taking his frustrations out in a non-stop, slapstick blood-bath of epic proportions.
Join Brian, at both his Helsingest AND his Brianest, in Mission #6: Where’s My Mummy?
++ Warning: this book contains scenes of idiocy that may offend those of a delicate, or even normal, disposition. Brian isn’t the hero we deserve. Nor, to be frank, is he the one we need right now. But he is a laugh, so there’s that. ++
Gaz Pengelly lives in rural UK with his girlfriend, a hamster and a part time labrador.
When not writing, he can be found careening around on his motorcycle or sitting in the garden with a pipe and a nice pint of real ale, depending on his mood.
Gaz's fantasy and horror books are inspired by his favourite authors; namely Masterton, Herbert, Brooks, Pratchett, Gemmell, amongst others.
Am flying through these books so quickly and not once did I ever feel like they were getting repetitive. Everything about these books is awesome the cover art, the humour and the adventures Brian and his friends find themselves in.
Getting to read about some of the different supernatural enemies from Egyptian mythologies has been very cool.
It's not the best 'Brian Helsing' book that Gareth has written, a little too short to give the characters any real depth unfortunately. Introducing a gay couple of gay into the storyline whilst a good attempt appears too unstructured and they come across as lack luster stereotypes without any justification to have been introduced, never mind, it hasn't harmed Brian's credibility as a kick-ass demon Hunter, just his inability to increase his prowess with the heroines. The better story of Brian's new ninja love life was the only thing to suffer, much like Brian's early years with the female kind! I'm sure as Brian becomes more adept with his growing abilites he will grow more comfortable with the people he meets. I've read all of the previous Helsing books within the last month and I'm looking forward to reading the remainder as they are an enjoyable read.
Another wonderful Brian Helsing book, as our inept doer of derring-do tries to have a simple holiday with alarming results. With the help of Ninja-warrior Aimi and two athletic Germans, Brian must face mummies, golems and even a Kracken! All of this in pursuit of an ancient artifact desired by an equally archaic sorcerer. As always, the writing is crisp and descriptive, while keeping the action moving. Pengelly keeps the balance between humor and the somber life of a fighter of evil beautifully. The character of Brian has grown immensely over the books and it is great fun to watch his changes. Start reading this series today, you will not be disappointed!
This is the sixth of the Brian Helsing series. This time Brian is taking a holiday to Egypt to get away from his Helsing duties with Aimi, the ninja from his trip to Japan (the Helsing #4). He finds his ring tingling, and senses that there are supernatural doings going on. He and Aimi meet two gay Germans on their first night and they decide they will travel throughout Egypt together. Soon they find out that one of the Germans is related to the very first Helsing, and from there the story goes quicker.
Humor, supernatural, D and D references, movie, video games all in the series. Not to serious or long read. Books are in my opinion a day or two reads even with work then again I'm up till all hours. I'd say about a month to read all the available books even with days didn't turn on the reader. This book I looked forward to reading each night many times staying up way later then I should with having to be at work early.
Or more like funny action adventure with a heavy dose of magic and reluctant hero. Poor Brian. On vacation with a beautiful Asian ninja, and off course, he is pulled into another adventure dealing with murderous mummies. This book made me think of Raiders of the Lost Arc and The Mummy! Both wonderful movies full of action and treasure. This was a great book full of action and treasure and mummies, skeletons, and evil mages. Great fun.
Well I did just blow through 3 books in a day and a half. Just when I was wandering who tha big bad will be, last books ending (which flew right over my head) and this one gave us a nice little thing to look forward to, though I expect 2-3 more books till then. Geep up the good work and keep pumping them out
This book finds Brian battling a boatload of monsters! More than he's ever faced. The story is excellent and non-stop action from the beginning. These books should be read in order.
Yeah, I have enjoyed this series, and this one takes place in Egypt. Mummies, ancient relatives and descendants, interesting ways to off golems, and other fancy stuff. Yep, I'm moving on to the next book shortly.
This volume moved in a different direction with a truly evil character. Added a new dimension with unexpected assistance from additional Helsings living and gone before . Funny and exciting.
I usually love this series, its lighthearted and fun. However, I did not care for this one at all! In fact I could not even finish this one! I do not recommend at all!
Brian once more stumbles from one adventure to another with a steady stream of alcohol and humour . Really enjoying his down to earth views and does show "Anyone can Be a hero". Great stiffness for a fun read
I love this series of books. I can just dip in & out of them. Knowing Penzance well, it just feels so comfortable and familiar. Even the swearing is local, sounds like me.
