Soon there will be Hell to pay. A fantasy horror novel with hearty doses of mystery and humour. Iain Rob Wright scares the hell out of me!" - J.A. Konrath
One of Horror's most respected authors, Iain Rob Wright is the writer of more than forty books, many of them bestsellers. A previous Kindle All-Star and a mainstay in the horror charts, he is a prolific producer of unique and original stories. From his apocalyptic saga The Gates to his claustrophobic revenge thriller ASBO, Iain writes across a broad spectrum of sub genres, creating both beloved series and standalone titles.
With work available in several languages and in audio, Iain Rob Wright is one of the fastest rising stars in horror, but when not writing he is a dedicated family man. Father to Jack and Molly, and husband to Sally, he is often seen sharing his family memories with his fans on Facebook.
I really can't get my head around this story and am having trouble scoring it. Anywhere between 1 and 4 stars! I've never read anything like this before. If I was a religious person I would consider it blasphemous but, as an atheist, I'm just confused. The Devil seeking redemption, a war in Heaven, Judas Iscariot plotting his revenge for being cruelly manipulated two millennia ago. My head hurts! Have I just read a literary masterpiece or a load of old tosh? I suspect the latter.

Blood on the Bar (Lucas the Atoner, Book 1) by Iain Rob Wright is the beginning of something very special. If you are, as I am, a fan of Iain Rob Wright you may find some comparisons to The Final Winter in his newest endeavor. Iain has outdone himself this time in my opinion. He has the skillful ability to bend genres, wordsmith his utter madness in a way that not only entertains but in some ways educates the reader. I was utterly engaged and fascinated with the characters the story-line and just how much I enjoyed this particular work by Iain. I sometimes find when religion is injected into horror/paranormal or any other genre that it sometimes overpowers the narrative. This is not the case with Blood on the Bar. While religion plays a fairly large part to the plot of this story, it is done with a great deal of skill and thought. Not only a fight between good and evil, angel and demon, Heaven and Hell, but also defining what and who is the good. You may find yourself siding with that one name you thought of as evil all your life. Redemption is a wonderful thing, and Iain tells that story beautifully. This is why Iain Rob Wright has the title of ‘Best Selling Author’, and has accolades from the likes of J.A. Konrath, David Moody, Matt Shaw, David T. Wilbanks, Eric S. Brown and Ryan C. Thomas, just to name a few. When I was younger and Stephen King was the name, and his books were the ones you waited for with bated breath to be released...I now find myself on the lookout for the next Iain Rob Wright release. I am so looking forward to my continued enjoyment of this author and for the continuing story of Lucas the Atoner.

About the Author: Iain Rob Wright is one of the UK's most successful horror and suspense writers, with novels including the critically acclaimed, The Final Winter; the disturbing bestseller, ASBO; and the wicked screamfest, The Housemates.
The three most important things in his life are his wife, his children, and his fans.
His work is currently being adapted for graphic novels, audio books, and foreign audiences. He’s an active member of the Horror Writers Association and a massive animal lover.
Mr. Wright has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Once again, I loved every minute of this book! I hope more is to come for this story... I don't want it to end!
Packed from beginning to end with action. Characters you just come to love and admire and as you read you on edge into the tale of wonder and a group of people from different walks of life begin a journey that is full of surprises. Loved it and definitely recommend, Looking forward to the next book. In the series to see where they head and what awaits them.
I don’t know why his book Tar is linked to the Hell on Earth series (it says it’s book 2.5). Tar has nothing to do with that series imo. Blood on the Bar however definitely has links but it’s not listed as part of the series. I feel like it could be a book 0 or a prequel. Eh, whatever.
The book is an ok read. However, if you are a Christian, I feel like you will be calling this book blasphemous. In this book Jesus is not God. Jesus is a cousin of Lucifer. Jesus was just a man. Lucifer is The Second Coming. Lucifer tells people to repent and to forgive. There is more but if say more it will give away to much of the story.
If you’re not a Christian then maybe you’ll like the book. I still found it not great. Christian morals aside, I’d probably rate it a 3. The Hell on Earth series I really liked. This though...eh.
Ian Rob Wright has captivated readers once more with Blood on the Bar, the electrifying first installment in the Lucas the Atoner series. My first experience with Wright’s writing was the enthralling The Housemates, and ever since, I’ve been drawn to his unique blend of suspense and character-driven storytelling.
In Blood on the Bar, Wright hits the ground running. The moment the blue feather makes its appearance, the pace accelerates dramatically. The story quickly evolves into a thrilling rollercoaster ride, marked by unpredictable twists that keep you guessing. Wright’s ability to craft tension is masterful, and he does so while developing complex characters who resonate with authenticity.
Lucas, the protagonist, is compelling and relatable, navigating a world filled with danger and moral ambiguity. His journey of atonement unfolds against a backdrop of richly described settings and a plot that intertwines mystery and horror seamlessly. Wright’s writing is sharp and engaging, ensuring that every chapter propels you forward, eager to uncover what happens next.
The narrative is fast-paced yet balanced, allowing moments of reflection amidst the tension. Wright’s skill in creating a vivid atmosphere pulls you into the story, making you feel every heartbeat and moment of dread alongside the characters.
Blood on the Bar is not just a thrilling ride; it’s a page-turner; it’s an investment in entertainment that pays off beautifully.
It’s an engaging story that promises to linger in your thoughts long after you’ve turned the last page.
I found myself thoroughly entertained, and I can’t help but eagerly anticipate the next book in the series.
If you enjoy suspenseful thrillers with a dash of horror, this book is an absolute must-read. Wright has once again proven why he’s a standout author in the genre.
Full disclosure – I was provided a copy of this book by the author, however, have voluntarily chosen to write a review. All opinions are my own. Blood on the Bar is set for a June 26, 2018 release.
Revenge is Hell
Blood on the Bar is the story of Lucas the atoner. While he appears to most as a suave Irishman who is not to be trifled with, Lucas is none other than Lucifer, who has been exiled to earth to live among the human population. Usually calm, cool and collected as he dwells among mortal man, one morning Lucas wakes up in the dirty back alley of a pub with no recollection of how he got there. As he tries to figure out what has happened to him, things go from bad to worse when it is revealed that a once forgotten adversary has returned to avenge an eons-old transgression. With his powers sapped and his mortal self failing, Lucas finds himself and several unsuspecting companions captive and fighting for their lives and souls as they attempt to escape the very depths of Hell.
For those familiar with Iain Rob Wright’s work, Blood on the Bar is a stand-alone novel, but the characters place this novel squarely in the “Damienverse” series of books. Lucas has appeared in smaller, but no less prominent, roles in several of Wright’s earlier novels, so it’s good to see Lucas in the spotlight as the focus of this story. The action in this one is fast and furious, and I guarantee that if you are not totally hooked by the end of the first three chapters you must have your eyes closed! Wright weaves an amazing story of epic and biblical proportions that is full of surprises and will have you on the edge of your seat. Whether you are new to Iain Rob Wright’s work or a long-time fan such as me, you will be captivated by this newest offering.
Firstly, it might be difficult to describe the genre that this entertaining story fits best in. Is it fantasy, horror or even thriller? For me there are elements of all three. It’s a very interesting look at Christianity with a clever twist on the who’s good and who’s bad theme. Iain Rob Wright is widely, and quite rightly, regarded as a master of the horror genre and his wonderful writing style is on show here as he leads us into this world of angels, demons and the devil himself. A great read and immensely entertaining story that flies by with each scene leading quickly to the next. There’s everything in this one from demons and monsters to humour and even a good dose of gore. Great fun cleverly written, very original and top class, recommended. As a side note, Aubrey Parsons’ reading of the audio-book only adds to it, taking it to an even higher level. His command of accents is particularly useful given the many dialects of the characters involved. He brings life to the action and tension to the drama with a first class performance. Great work from both author and narrator.
Enjoyable. Not great and definitely not the authors best at all! But enjoyable all the same. A little different from some of his usual books. I struggle to understand why this is the final book of the "Damienverse " apart from the main character was also in "Final Winter" but I feel that his last book should and was more of a finale than this one. This book had enjoyable parts but if im honest a lot of the characters are similar to other characters in other books but with a different name with no extra depth or complexity which I found a little disappointing. The main character is fun and interesting and also I found it quit good how he was a little different than when we first met him in "Final Winter" . The storyline was ok. Not my usual sort of read but again, enjoyable but not his best.
Add usual, I'm going nuts I have to wait for more to the story. Excellent beginning, solid, complex and likeable characters. They evoke strong emotional reactions as you move through the novel, starting with the very first page! It is a fabulous take, with hidden aspects revealed at well planned intervals, but you are so guessing until, and after, the end of the book. For those who love action, intrigue, and the concepts associated with creationism and the war in Heaven as well as the possible end of the world - you will not be disappointed. Fan of Iain Rob Wright's many tales? You will be ecstatic. Enjoy!
I was given the audiobook for free by the narrator in return for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book (as I have done with all of Iain Rob Wright books tbh) and the narrator has done a fantastic job bringing this to life. I especially enjoyed the voice of Galadry (spelling?). It was like a mix of Brian Blessed and Matt Berry. It put a massive smile on my face to hear it! The story itself got straight into the action pretty much. I enjoyed reading (or hearing) more of Lucas and the take on 'characters' from Christianity. It wasn't what I was expecting and got the morals and such across without being preachy. Another awesome IRW tale 👍
Another 5 stars for Iain Rob Wright from me, I've never read a poor book from this guy and this part one of Lucas the Atoner was incredible. The writers view of God,Lucifer and the whole epic bible stuff is from an imagination of a genius, the character of Lucas as Lucifer is just fantastic fun. We met Lucas previously if you've read Mr Wright before but it won't spoil a thing if this is your first venture into the mind of the new king of British Horror. Here's hoping part two is just around the corner!
I really enjoy all this authors work. This book is no exception. I found Lucas's story a real page Turner full of twists and turns. It has a perfect combination of horror and gore and even manages to incorporate some comedy without making it tacky in the slightest. I really hope I will be able to read more about Lucas vetta and Simon. The story is far from over and I'm literally gagging for more lol. Excellent story telling at it's best! Highly recommended.
Iain Rob Wright has a screwed up imagination and I love it!! My adventure started with Sea Sick, never cared for the types e of books he writes. However, he knows exactly what he is doing, and sucked me in. I have read them all and anxiously await new!! Lucas has his work cut out for him , trying to save the world. A different role for the devil. Can't wait to see how the journey continues!!!!
Full disclosure – I was provided a copy of this audio book by the author, however, have voluntarily chosen to write a review. All opinions are my own.
This is the first audio book I have listened to from Iain Rob Wright, though I am making my way through all of his e books. The audio tale is much more immersive, and this wont be the last of this authors books I will listen to. its a devilishly good tale of good versus evil going from a fallen devil to a battle royal via redemption.
I have read just about everything I.R.W. has written, and even tho this isn't what I normally read or like, I ended up not being able to put it down. His writing pulls you in with whatever he is writing about and keeps me reading. It starts out in one direction and almost instantly pulls you in another, and by the end I couldn't put it down. Kudos to you I. R.W. for pulling me into something I normally wouldn't like and ended up loving it down to the last page.
I loved this book, read it very quickly as I couldn’t put it down. The story is one I probably wouldn’t have normally been drawn to, but I have enjoyed all the books by this author, that I have read, so I generally buy without reading the blurb, which I am glad about as I’d have missed a treat! Brilliantly written, with some excellent characters. Highly recommended.
If you are going to read this book, you should buy The Final Winter first. A little bit of this book is in The Final Winter, which is an AWESOME READ, too!! Lucas is back and a battle is beginning!! A vicious battle, between Heaven and Hell begins! Can Lucas and Heaven win? Ah, you'll have to get this book to find out!!
I haven't read all of Wright's books, but the character of Lucas, here the protagonist, has popped up in a few of them that I have read and was definitely a favorite character of mine. I certainly enjoyed this fast-paced set up to the end-of-days sort of tale and I am greatly looking forward to the rest of the series.
There not enough stars for this one. Ohhh Mr.Wright u knock this out the box. Your style of writing is sick. I have never read anything quite like this. It had everything and I mean everything. You are the king of horror and thrillers. A must read!!!! Ten 🌟. 💖💖💖💖💖💖 it
This is awesome book well written on the edge of your seat, have to see how it ends reading . The book makes you think and hope for some ,and yell at others to and not to do things . Makes me hope for a book two. Well worth it, buy it you'll like it to
I have read most of Iain Rob Wright's books and enjoyed every one of them. This is a departure from his previous work and it works really well. I do love books that spawn sequels and can't wait to read the next one.
Having the Devil himself as the lead character is a bold move, but his character is so well written that you really want him to succeed.
Iain's writing only gets better with time. The story formula for this book will be familiar to his fans, but with better execution. I'm glad I read Final Winter before this as it gave me insight into the main character. I look forward to the next adventure of Lucas!
Absolutely brilliant. A rollercoaster of thrills, chills and terror. Lucas, the mystery patron of the bar exudes Irish charm, but is he what he seems? For that matter, is anyone above suspicion? A great book that keeps you hooked but when is book 2 coming out. C’mon Iain! You wrote this in 2018!
Although this book does touch on other series it is perfectly fine for a standalone. What a great book of evil and redemption! Never thought I would be rooting for the devil! Good characters in this book, they have the Iain touch to them. I am a fan of good versus evil stories and this one is one of the best.
Well, this is a another take on the Lucifer theme. It has a good story, which also has the potential to be a very good series. Cannot wait for the next one to see where the story goes next. Highly recommended.
I enjoyed this read very much and look forward to the next installment. Lucas is a fascinating character and the plots just keep getting more and more creative.
Good paranormal adventure, but a bit of a slow-starter. I don't get why it's described as horror, as it's not particularly scary, but that's not what I was looking for anyway. Definitely looking forward to the next one.
