Ally. Protector. Lover.

Security consultant Lee tells himself he not interested in the outrageous flirting coming his way from the young barista in a bookshop café. With the ink still wet on the career-defining deal he’s just signed, Lee’s got no time for a man in his life — especially not one who wears rainbow wristbands and has bright streaks of dye running through his hair.

Dominic’s fighting to stop the destruction of an iconic LGBT venue but with little support, the campaign’s going nowhere. Maybe the moodily good looking guy in the sharp, corporate suit can be persuaded to get involved — and not just with the campaign.

As Lee and Dominic’s unlikely affair heats up, the campaign goes cold — until a charismatic stranger appears on the scene, determined to kickstart it into life. But something about the would-be saviour doesn’t add up.

As the dark and twisted truth is unearthed, Lee and Dominic are forced to confront the terrifying fact that the old venue isn’t all that’s facing destruction.

I was gifted the AUDIO file of this book.

This is book 2 in the Deviant Hearts series, but it can totally be read/listened to as s stand alone book. Dashel and Billy from book one do pop up, but they are not central to the plot. I do, however, suggest you DO read/listen to Captive Hearts, cos you know, I said so!

Lee is out of the police force, after one particular undercover operation tips him over the edge and is currently building his security business. Finding the cafe to wait out the storm brings Dominic into his life, and things are not ever going to be the same again. Dominic is head of a campaign to save a rundown pub from development, and its floundering. A saviour comes to help, but is he all he seems?

So! Again, I need to say, usually I try to keep two seperate parts to my audio reviews, one for the book and one for the narration. Increasingly, especially with first person books, I can't do that. So not gonna really try to!

Lee is part of the plot of Deviant Hearts, and I knew when I was listening to that book, I needed to hear his story. So glad I got the chance!

There is immediate attraction between lee and Dominic, that much is obvious, but what I particularly liked about this one is that much of the "action" is off page! Go figure, me, who likes her books down and dirty, and this one . . .isn't so much! Oh don't get me wrong, it's hot and it's sexy, it's all just that little bit out of reach and I really did love that.

There was MUCH going on, aside from the romance between Lee and Dominic. MUCH. There is the campaign to save Charlie's. There is Dominic's ex, who he has to work with, still trying to get back with Dom. Lee's ex, causing him problems too. There is the new guy taking up the baton for Charlie's too. Dom's dad is trying to make amends with him for what he did all those years ago, and Lee's business is taking up a lot of his time. All of these items come together in a spectactular fashion!

Dan Calley again narrates. The man is growing on me, big time!

He gets over all of Lee's need to be ENOUGH for Dominic, to be the best he can, regardless of what his ex said. Calley gets over every single alarm bell that Lee has about *everything*! But I loved that Lee is listening to his instincts, and Calley gets that feeling across beautifully. Calley gets over every single thing Dom thinks of his father, of his brother, and how much he loves his little sister. What Dom feels about Tiger, the ex. What Dom feels when all becomes shockingly clear and how much that hurts him.

And Calley gets over every single thing Dom feels when things come to a head.

You can READ the words, and you get a picture, you know, but LISTENING to them? Paints a totally different picture to the one you read. It's why I really enjoy listening to a book AFTER I've read them.

There is a third book, but I'm not entirely sure where the characters in that book fit in with Billy and Dashel, or with Lee and Dominic, but I look forward to listening to that, when it comes out in audio. I don't like to flip between listening and reading in the same series, it sor of spoils it for me a bit.

5 stars for the book
5 stars for the narration
5 stars overall.

Enjoying this series (an audio review)

I listened to Captive Hearts, not knowing what I was getting into. The book was violent, heartbreaking, and emotional. I loved it, and it’s up there on my really enjoyed list. When this second book in the series came out on audio, I nabbed it, and I’m so glad I did. I think I was expecting violence, and there was some, to be sure, but it was more unexpected and therefore had just as much emotional impact on me as the last book did.

Lee Adams was in the last book as a grizzled undercover police detective. He was critical in rescuing Billy Grace. He became friends with Billy and Dash, even visiting the B&B they opened. He intrigued me, and I was thrilled to see that his book was to be next in the series. Billy and Dash make a cameo in this book, and it’s nice to see the progress Billy is making in his recovery. Not always easy, but with Dash’s support, he’s making improvements.

Back to Lee. He’s left the police department and has moved into private security. He’s got a couple of lucrative contracts but his personal life is on the downslide. He broke up with his long-time partner and has moved into a crappy little flat, unwilling to sell the joint property, more to spite his ex than any worry about getting the highest market price. Bitter? Just a bit. And rightly so. One day he enters a bookstore to get out of the rain. There’s a café serving healthy food, but that’s not what draws him in. He meets a young man who snags his attention. There’s a bit of flirting, but Lee perceives a rival for the man’s attention and he’s not into playing games. He doesn’t fish in anyone else’s pond.

Dominic Russell is intrigued by the stranger, and annoyed his ex-boyfriend won’t let up in his pursuit. Dom literally found the slimebag in their bed with someone else, and he has no interest in going there again. The ex swears he’s changed, but I’m glad Dom recognizes he got lucky. Now, though, the stranger has disappeared and there’s no chance they’ll ever meet up again, right?

Lee’s curiosity brings him back to the bookshop. There’s a local LGBTQ pub that is about to be demolished, and the owners of the bookstore are leading a campaign to save it. Lee’s wary of activists and becomes concerned when he sees Dom is involved. By then he’s becoming involved with Dom himself. This sets up the conflict nicely – Dom wants to save the old pub by whatever means necessary (short of violence), while Lee wants Dom safe and sound and at home in bed.

Part of me was torn. Activism is often the best way to accomplish goals, but I always wonder just how much difference these acts of defiance make. I drive past a group every weekend who are protesting the treatment of chickens at a processing plant. I admire their determination. I feel guilty about not being a vegan. Then I move on. I have a friend who was arrested for that activism (he broke into a processing plant). Do I admire him? Yes. Would I join him? Uh, no. I’ll sign a petition, but I know that doesn’t really make a difference. Should I be more active? Do more when I see wrongs? I’m quite sure the answer is yes. I’ll continue to donate money strategically, sign petitions, and share stories, but that’s as far as I’m able to go. Will I ever be a radical? Doubt it.

Did this book push me? Yes, it did. I wanted Lee and Dom to get their happy ending and they did, but man it was a rough ride. Like I said, there was violence in this book. Should I have seen it coming? Possibly, but if I had I think that might have lessened the effect. In the end, I loved this book almost as much as I loved the first one.

Dan Calley is quickly becoming one of my favorite British narrators. He helms this series as well as Jack L. Pyke’s Don’t books. He’s got gruff and grizzled down pat, but he also has a surprisingly lighter voice for Dom. The differentiation with the different voices worked, and this was another great performance by this talented narrator. I hope to see more of him in the future. And I can’t wait for the final book to come out on audio.

Lee is secretive, controlled, dark, and severe when we meet him in Captive Hearts. But with a complete life change and a low moment during a downpour, he finds a surprise that just could maybe bring light and peace into his life. I liked Lee quite a lot in this story. He did seem like a completely different person, however, from the man we met before. There wasn't a true seamlessness between who we met and who we're reintroduced to. Both men are worthy of love, worthy of true freedom and future, but whether they really are the same person is debatable. What I will say about this new Lee is that there's a captivating amount of softness and vulnerability in him.

Dominic instinctively knew that there was something inside of Lee that was worth getting to know. His eagerness and inner strength in addition to his youth and self-assurance made for an intriguing package that drew Lee in just as strongly. Their interactions were well-balanced and their connection was strong right from the start. The lives they'd both lived up to this point gave them each the tools necessary to provide a safe place for both of their hearts. Each one could open up about their pain and frustrations and while surprised at the acceptance both men displayed, they were both relieved that their fears of rejection were quashed.

The drama that surrounded both men was both a surprise and a bit predictable. I could feel that there was going to be a helluva huge family connection drama, especially since that was the source of so much pain for one of the men, but the more intense drama surrounding the Save Charlie movement was what surprised me. It was big, violent, scary, and the hints and intimations all throughout prepared us for the who, but definitely not the final confrontation.

Despite the high level of drama that surrounded and guided many of Dominic and Lee's interactions, there's an undeniable chemistry and compatibility between the men. There's also an incredible amount of tenderness between them that I wasn't expecting. I loved these two men and rooted for them the entire time, even when they fell back into old coping habits. There was a future for them that could bring them both true healing and a sense of peace that will sustain them far beyond what they could have ever achieved on their own. From the start we knew these men would have a hard road to travel to get their HEA and while that road was certainly littered with blockades and potholes, they made it through to the other side together. It was intense yet tender amongst all the crazy they had to live through.

ARC willingly read and reviewed.

The second book in the Deviant Hearts series, this is Lee's story.
We met Lee in book one, as the undercover policeman that tried his best
to bring down some nasty criminals, while helping the victims to stay safe.

Everything he had to experience as an undercover cop has left him with a bad taste in his mouth,
so Lee decides to take control of his life.
Out with the punishing, soul destroying work.
Out with the stagnant, unhealthy, unloving relationship.
Lee was a respectable business man now, he was using his skills to
build up his security company, he had no love in his life, but so what ?
His heart was closed off, he was weary and tired of being let down,
so he was happy in his lonely existence, or so he thought.

Dominic was an openly gay young man, he was well loved in the coffee shop
he worked in, he was sweet and happy and passionate about books.
But that exterior of cheeriness was covering some deep seeded issues.
Issues of rejection, of being used , and issues of his sexuality all haunted him.
He didn't need anyone else in his life , what he had was enough.

One rainy afternoon, and a half hearted campaign changes Lee and Dom's perspectives.
2 men extremely attracted to one another,
2 weary souls taking tentative steps to know one another.
2 exes, interfearing and threatening their new relationship.
* At first glance we were pieces from 2 very different puzzles, yet we slotted together perfectly *

As the campaign to save an old pub gets going , we meet a whole lot
of new quirky misfits, trying to attract attention to their cause.
Enter Jez, he comes promising to help the campaign, but changes the whole dynamics of the story.
After Jez there is an uderlying sinister feel to the story that leaves you anxiously waiting.
You can feel the tension rising constantly, waiting, expecting,
and then suddenly bam, everything changes ...
Prepare for an ending that will leave you hyperventilating, as the loose ties come together.
What will happen to Lee, and Dom and Jez.

This story was a slow burn, but it was so well written that it made it all the more enjoyable.
l'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

Audio book review:
Story: 5
Narration: 4
Overall: 5

This is a great series!

I have to be honest. When I listened to the first book in this series, Captive Hearts, I wasn't sure how I felt about the narrator. You see, I'm American and Dan Calley's British accent was different from other ones I've listened to, and it was a bit tough for me to get used to. However, my opinion changed completely after listening to the second book.

As I said above, it took me a bit to get used to Dan Calley's accent but once I did, I was captivated by the story while listening to Radical Hearts. So much so that I went back and listened to Captive Hearts a second time. He does a good job with different voices for the different characters and I loved the soft tone of his voice. What this experience tells me is that I shouldn't judge a narrator solely by how much I did/didn't enjoy just one book.

Below is a portion of my review of the ebook from when it was first published:

Radical Hearts had a brilliant twist that I never saw coming. I knew that something was brewing when the character called Jez showed up but the author did a great job of keeping us in the dark and kind of stringing us along. I don't mean that things were too drawn out, rather I was kept on the edge of my seat, so to speak, waiting with anticipation and trepidation for the bad thing to happen. I surely didn't see it coming when the first thing was revealed and then another thing happened. Sorry for being deliberately cryptic but I don't do spoilers in my reviews (at least not intentionally).

Radical Hearts is a great story. If you like your M/M romance with a bit of mystery and suspense and an HEA you should enjoy this one a lot.

A copy of this audiobook was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

A E Ryecart had been a new to me author. In the past 6 months, since finding her I have been purchasing her books, one a month in two of her series. I started with Barista Boys and Deviant Hearts. I like them both but for different reasons, so I am just going back and forth between them enjoying the ride.

This second in the series of Deviant Hearts, has given me another great love story along with another mystery and damn I love where this author takes me. Fate again is the setting, a small old book shop that serves coffee is tempting to someone getting soaked in a rain storm; and this is what happens to a wet Lee Adams. Funny, finding Dominic Russell was the best thing Lee’s friends could have prescribed to have happen to their almost reclusive friend.

The unraveling of what lives both of these two men has had prior to that rainy day….The sharing of trust gives us a slow dance. Each man thrilled at what they sense they have come upon in each other. Each keeping their pasts in the background.

But it becomes obvious the need is there when Lee finally shares he had been with the police force, being undercover and the havoc it played. Now that Columbo has been activated when Dominic and his friends want to save an old bar being sold, for someone rich to tear down and build apartments. The people that come forward to ‘help’ raise Lee’s hackles.

But the relationship for Lee and Dominic slowly grows to what we truly want for them both….The best life can be.

Ms. Ryecart I loved this story, I loved the visit seeing friends Billy and Dashiell from Captive Hearts Book #1. It was wonderful seeing Billy now healthy and happy in his new life. You have built a Captive audience in me to follow your lead!

Yes!!! Lee's story!

I just knew there was so much more to Lee and knew he had a good heart! After a chance meeting, sparks fly for Lee and Dominic. Both with their own baggage and issues they forge a tentative connection that leads to more. With some questionable characters, dubious intentions and some good old fashioned intrigue, we are taken on a twisted story of warped revenge against someone in Dominic's life. (no spoilers, LOL).

Now I must say, I was actually surprised by the links between the characters and looking back I can't believe I missed it! I think I was just too focused on the allusive and shady Jez! I feel these links between all the characters were very well done and I honestly thought there were parallels but no connection until the big reveal. Whether I just missed it or it was actually that well hidden I'm not sure but I still loved the twists and turn, danger and sparks along the way.

I really like Dom & Lee and liked that we got more of Dashiell & Billy too. A great follow up and great audio too!

Radical Hearts is book two In the Deviant Hearts series. We do meet Lee In book one and there is an appearance of Billy and Dashiell in this book but I think it’s safe to say it’s not necessary to have read the first in order to enjoy this one… but I recommend book one!
Now having said that… I did enjoy this book, though it isn’t quite as dark as the first.
Lee is starting up his own business as a security consultant, going through a rough breakup, and finds himself in a vegan café/bookshop. The worker behind the counter catches his eye and he finds himself pulled there more and more.
Dominic is trying to help save an old LGBTQ pub from being torn down and converted into swanky flats for the rich but his innocent help and the secrets he has could put his life in danger.

I loved Lee and was eagerly waiting for his story from the first book. I have to say this was not what I expected but I loved it. I loved the characters; the story was intriguing and kept you glued to the page. It is hot and sexy and the twists near the end nail-biting.
I listened to this on audio as I love Dan Calley and I think he really made this even better if that’s at all possible. I love his accents and the way he carries a story so I do recommend if you can get the audio!

Lee Adams has had enough of police work. It’s taken a toll on him and he had to get out and find a new direction before he broke. Working as a security consultant, Lee can still utilize all his skills, and have a social life at the same time. And it’s the perfect time for Lee to get a social life – he’s broken up with his boyfriend, he’s secured a lucrative work contract – everything seems just right for a new relationship. Dominic is definitely new to Lee – he’s colorful and bright, working at a bookshop and trying to sustain a campaign to save a run-down pub.

I adored Lee and Dominic’s relationship. They are both such independent characters who have been hurt by past relationships, and yet they were able to fit together so perfectly. They had to work for it, but they never stopped, despite the obstacles (some of them quite terrifying) that popped up.

The narration was fantastic!!!! I love Dan Calley’s performance. I love the energy he infuses into his book. The steamy moments are even steamier, and he brings such an intensity to the action sequences.

I loved the latest book by A.E. Ryecart. Her characters work their way into your heart as they struggle to building a relationship built on love and trust. Not something easy to do with the hurt they've endured from the other men in their lives.

Meeting by chance in a bookstore coffeeshop is something out of a Hollywood movie. The cast of characters involved in a movement to save an old building are depicted in such great detail, you're able to 'see' them, and laugh at some of their ideas for the campaign. While a mysterious stranger sounds too good to be true...he may be. But the love that Lee and Dom find is definitely something appropriate for the 'big screen.' Lasting, sexy and fun!

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an unbiased, honest review. I totally enjoyed this romance.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

This story had so many little twist and turns, it felt like there was something coming at them from all angles. Dominic is living his life according to his rules, he just wants to be himself but can’t seem to break free of the hurt his father caused years ago. Lee hasn’t been ready to put himself out there since his relationship collapsed but can’t help being drawn to Dom when they meet.

Hmm, I liked this story a lot, not as much as the previous one but it was good. I loved getting to know these characters as the book went on though they tried to keep themselves at a distance for a while. I liked how these two really took it slow and got to know each other more before they jumped in too much, even if it wasn’t always intentional.

My only real gripe with the story is it seemed that every time they started to make headway something else get in their way and the reality of that many things or people causing problems is mind boggling. Though at times it was themselves that got in their own way.

I liked the cover art with the pictures of the characters, though Dom’s pink tips would have been a nice touch.

An okay story for the second instalment of the series.  There was something which stopped me getting into the characters and connecting with them.
Story includes a jealous Ex, and multiple story lines going in this book, a little fast paced. The ending was filled with drama and a big surprise.
Lee had ducked into a book shop to wait for the rain to pass from a business meeting. A cute guy behind the counter of the café section caught his attention. After being with one man for 15 years and now he needed to jump back on the horse again according to his best friend.
Dominic had a campaign to save The Kings Head pub was as a Victorian building from being destroyed. Telling Lee all about it in hopes to get another supporter to join there cause.

Dominic works in an alternative cafe where he serves security consultant and ex-cop, Lee, and the two develop a relationship. In his spare time, Dominic is trying to save an old pub from being redeveloped and he naively attracts some questionable characters to the cause. Lee feels that something is off, but can he work out what’s going on?

This brilliant story has everything: well-crafted main and supporting characters; a slowly unfolding menacing thriller that wasn’t upstaged by the romance; and utterly realistic dialogue! Although a little stilted at times, I quickly adjusted to the great audiobook narrator. He used a more working class British accent and this suited the story perfectly!!

Romantic story with a twist of mystery and a bit of steam. I found this a touching and gentle tale of two different but really good men who find love together. Lee and Dominic's growing friendship and love is really the center of this story and it is beautifully done. Both MC's are likable and i was cheering for them from their first flirting moments. I enjoyed the writing and the storytelling!

This is the second book in the Deviant Heart Series and it could be read as a stand-alone. I really enjoyed book one, Captive Hearts and it is well worth reading. I really liked seeing Dashiell and Billy in this book and they played such a lovely part.

I loved this book. Lee and Dominic are great together and I loved how their love story flows almost seamlessly, despite things going wrong left and right all around them.
From Dom’s relationship with his father, to Lee’s turbulent confrontations with his ex, and then all the mess surrounding the pub’s sale and the campaign against it.
But despite all that, their bond stays strong and they both lean on each other and vow to be completely honest to one another. I loved this book; it’s very romantic but also packs a lot of action.
Book 2 in the Deviant Hearts series, but can totally be read as a standalone.

Second installment in the series and a lot lighter read than book nr. 1. Lee has broken away from his previous career and is in a much better place. Just the right person to help Dominic who's on a crusade to save an old pub. Or trying to deal with family rejection 'cause that's what he's really strugling with. Very enjoyable.

Excellent narration. Good story. The narrator is on my favorites list.

The story moved a little slow at the beginning, but I think the author was saving all the action for the last few chapters.

I recommend this book if your a looking for a M/M romance read with some suspense and and a few warm fuzzies.
