thoughts for the web novel INCLUDING SPOILERS!!
- hinata is strong but why doesn't she want to listen to what rimuru wants to say?
- Ellen... her real name is Eryune and she seems to be a noble from Sorcery Dynasty of Sarion; a princess
- so cute everyone's so supportive and loving towards rimuru even when he announced that he was human before his reincarnation as a slime. and although their people were killed by humans, the monsters didn't lump rimuru with the other humans.
- damn he's merciless when he used "heartless one"
- hahaha shion wished to be a better cook during her evolution/resurrection.
- veldora's out and about; finally released from his prison after 300 years!

anime stopped here---
- guess we'll be meeting all of the demon lords including leon who rimuru has been after this whole time for shizue in Walpurgis Banquet.
- guy crimson has ice dragon velzado as his subordinate/partner.
- found out about milim's backstory and who her dragon is.
- clayman dies

will be reading the light novel soon~

Having taken care of the most pressing issues, Rimuru and his monster allies are busy building their town. Part of that is establishing trade with the various surrounding nations. They need supplies, and Rimuru also hopes to convince everyone that even though they're monsters, humans can deal with them just like any other town. But as they move onto a bigger stage, they also attract entirely new enemies. . .

This volume was enjoyable, but also a bit scattered. Rimuru has been having dreams that feel like Shizu is trying to communicate with him, but he's also not in any particular hurry to pick up on them. The tour of the nearby countries is rather relaxed despite the fact that he's trying to forge alliances.

It was amusing to see Rimuru finally sign up to be an adventurer. Aside from the funny way he gets his license, this now means he can actually get paid to do what he's been doing all along in killing the monsters in the Jura forest that pose a danger to his town. Of course, basic economics says that if he actually tried to cash in all his monster parts he'd drive the guild broke.

This volume also introduces the kids Shizu was formerly teaching. It's neat to see how Shizu's relationship with the Demon Lord Leon is more complicated than it initially appears. She had been angry at him for a few things, but also appreciative that what he did for her saved her life. And Rimuru, who decided to inherit her will, is trying his best to figure out what she actually meant when she sent him after Leon. Because he's starting to think Shizu didn't exactly mean to kill Leon.

The other interesting thing here (although it ties in with the main frustration) is that Rimuru finally meets other summoned people from Japan---and he figures out too late why Heroes are so highly regarded . . . and feared. He's been able to mostly coast thanks to his unique abilities Predator and Great Sage. But he's not the only one with unique skills. And when one of the summoned who has made it her life's mission to eradicate monsters clashes with him, he finally has to fight against someone incredibly stronger than he is.

And that's the main irritation here: the cliffhanger is brutal. And the next book isn't out for several months. If that bothers you, read the rest of the book and save the epilogue until book 5 comes out.

Overall, despite not much of impact happening for Rimuru himself, I enjoyed seeing the expanded world. The focus on the practical issues of building a civilization and running a town, the furthering of some earlier plot threads, and the hints of some really big things to come make this a solid read. I rate this book Recommended.

Book 4 isn't as good as the previous volumes as it was mainly setting up for future events. Fuse introduced some more characters but didn't utilize them a whole lot in this one, as I said this mainly felt like set up. There wasn't nearly as much action this time around either.

However the premise is still entertaining and I love the world and it's characters. Excellent world building. My only real gripe is Rimiru is still over powered and is almost god like though towards the end of this volume it seams like he is finally coming in contact with some situations he won't just breeze through.

I eagerly look forward to future volumes. And now that I have finished volume 4 I think I can watch the anime and not be too concerned with novel spoilers.

The development has gotten out of hand. After a semi satisfying battle, and his evolution followed by a romantic description of how each individual in his city obtained multiple overpowered skills, I can't help but think that as satisfying as it was it will never come into use. First of all, Orcs? Goblins turning into Ogres? K, but even if they get all these skills doesn't the barrier simply cancel out all magic? This power system has NO RULES, the readers can't tell if a skill is advanced rank, or god rank, or whether it's a class skill of demons or if even cockroaches can use it. There are less than 20 skills in Mushoku Tensei, but when it is more organized and there is clear reasonable progression it feels more fulfilling compared to the feeling of getting bullshitted. Because clearly NONE of them EARNED this power.

The backtracking and explanations can be a awkward, but I do feel like more of the story is fleshed out in the light novel compared to the manga.

BIG BIG SPOILERS. DON’T READ IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE VOLUME YET.
TLDR: GOOD READ, JUST READ IT!

First thing I’m saying. Why did they have to cut so much of this out of the anime! Going to Blumund, signing up as an adventurer, the whole Beretta summoning, man it sucks it was cut. Anyway, like the last two volumes it’s not fresh in my mind but I’m still writing a review coz why not.

Firstly, wow, didn’t expect the Hinata backstory before we even meet her, thats was new. I know it’s going to be in season three of the anime (which as of writing has only one episode left to come out but I watch as a binge so I haven’t seen it yet), as it covers the later chapters of the manga which is where that flashback is, but wow that was early. Cool though.

The meeting with the envoys from Eurazania was pretty much the same. (Now that I’m writing these reviews, I’m just realising I’m doing comparisons from the light novel to the manga and anime, oh well), not much to talk about there.

Same with the Dwargon trip, not much to talk about. It was definitely explained more with both the trip, and the whole being new at being a leader thing Rimuru goes in about. Like the dinner they cut from the anime , and I think the manga too. In short, very nice. (Also cute illustration of Shion as a bonus.)

Now we get to the travelling. The whole sequence of going to Blumund, becoming an adventurer and deepening the bond with the ‘trio of idiots’ was amazing, and makes the revelation later on during the ‘Barrier’ incident hit just a bit harder. Getting to the guild, this is where Rimuru was introduced to summoning magic and demons. Being faced with his first spiritual foe, he came up with the idea of coating physical objects with aura to deal damage to spiritual bodies, something not explained in the anime. It’s not the same as when he coated his blade with black flame against the orc lord to keep his severed hand from regenerating. (If I remember right, it was a bit ago.)

You meet Bydd and Thegis, two people I don’t think were even in the anime, the forma helping out with Mjöllmile later on and getting some character development. (Just saying the whole Mjöllmile story and trading in the light novel is a lot better then the anime or manga, but it’s fair that they just cut most of it since it’s not really all that important. Being just a dude who trades. But for me being a Tensura fan I definitely appreciate the more fleshed out and explained story.) And Thegis being a character who, to my knowledge, is only really there to show summoning magic and to show the effectiveness of the full potion, with the whole restoring his leg thing. Once again, not needed so I get why it was cut but still a nice story to flesh out the world and giving more reasons why, (I think it was Fuze) to trust Rimuru.

I nice world building dump and little look at the Moderate Jesters plus their ‘boss’ (I know this has spoilers for the book but this next part in brackets is a spoiler for the light novel in later volumes. At least one more. The ‘boss’ of the Moderate Jesters being Yuuki. I find it strange how in the anime we find out about Yuuki way WAY before the light novel. Like even after the whole demon lord thing it’s still not revealed to us the reader, not just Rimuru, that Yuuki is the mastermind.)

The meeting with Yuuki almost the same, the little confrontation being delayed a bit in the light novel. (Guess in the light novel Yuuki never saw Shizu’s mask? I actually don’t know about that. Or maybe the man’s just blind.) Though there is a lot more of an info dump in the light novel than the anime and manga, which is nice. More talk about the World Language. After that Rimuru just casually gets stronger by reading a while library’s worth of magic. I don’t think that was touched upon in the anime but there might have been a frame with it I can’t remember.

Rimuru meets the kids, that’s all the same, mostly from what I remember. Just more info on his thoughts and the kids power levels.

We get a cute little scene with Shuna and Shion (plus Benimaru, but the real kicker is the random drop of the Hero! We learn about Masayuki! Pretty short but call bombshell. I’m reading the light novel after watching the first two seasons of Tensura and reading the manga. I know of Masayuki but nothing more. So seeing his name pop up was exciting. We get the better story of Mjöllmile some nice character development for Bydd.

The whole nightclub section was cool, background on Mjöllmile and then dive into the info on Ur-Gracia. Cool little worldbuilding. The whole chapter with Ramiris and the spirits was good, not much to talk about in differences, just way more info. I will say there was a funny line when the ‘thing’ Chloe summons kissed Rimuru, his first thoughts were it was a bummer he couldn’t feel it. Not much else to say other than this is where he picked up spatial motion.

I won’t go too in-depth with the Beretta summoning, mainly coz this isn’t really that much to talk about, it’s just a cool scene that was cut from the anime and pretty short in the manga if I remember. Rimuru makes the doll, it’s flexible. Summons a demon to inhabit it, the doll transforms into the demons vision mostly. It’s happy since it can move freely. Rimuru gives it a name, Beretta and now this golem bodyguard for Ramiris is strong as hell. There’s just a lot of cool details and stuff within the whole process, and it’s a pretty big moment which is why I find it a shame it wasn’t animated or voiced but that’s just my gripe.

Then there’s Hinata. There were a lot of little details which I didn’t think about when watching the anime that were explained in the light novel. Like how he didn’t ever return to slime form to dodge or change is size to confuse her, it was because of the barrier blocking his magic skills, he couldn’t use magic sense. Meaning if he went into slime form he’d be blind. Cool detail I never thought about. Another cool little detail was when Rimuru was trying to convince Hinata her was Japanese, he actually spoke in Japanese, not the language this world speaks. Cool little detail. You can’t really do that in the anime or manga, (I mean technically they could for every language that isn’t Japanese. Like in the English iteration of the manga and anime they could have it written in Japanese with the English underneath, or ask the VA to speak that one line in Japanese with English subtitles, only for that one line. But hey that’s more work and I’m not petty enough to flack them for it.)

Lastly. Man that cliff hanger!!! If I hadn’t watched the anime, read the manga, and was reading only the light novel when it was coming out, that would have been one hell of a pain to deal with! Leaving it at when he was getting impaled, saying he felt his consciousness slipping and awakening glutton. God that was awesome, but leaving it like that is so cruel my god ha. Anyway ten outta ten book, I don’t care if I’m biased this being my favourite series, just read the whole series!!! Watch all the anime and read the manga!

My thoughts on the Fourth volume of the light novel of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken) by Fuze and Mitz Vah.

(more than half of this volume was cut from the manga and anime)

The story: The story continues developing the political landscape the protagonist is now part of, also how he gets acquaintanced with the leader of the free guild and for most of the book he takes the role of teacher as a last favor to a long-gone friend

Enjoyment:
This volume was filled with what makes me love this series, town/country development, political insight, adventure and world-building (sadly this was cut from the manga/Anime) also the part when he becomes a teacher was one of the best bits of story so far

Final verdict:
This volume was one of the most enjoyable so far, pretty laid back but also very serious at times, there were some darker themes explored and the cliffhanger at the end really left me wishing for more 9/10

Read this review (and others) at: https://literatureislife.com/2020/04/...

The 4th volume of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime covers episodes 20-23 of the anime. Episode 24 dealt with a side story not featured as part of Volume 4’s main plot. This is the point where we start to see some disconnect from the books. The anime skipped over a fair amount of material from Volume 4. Some of these events were watered down in the anime and get summarized quickly. Others are skipped over entirely, removing sub-plots from the story. Overall, about half of Volume 4 was cut from the TV show.

The first part of this book deals with the aftermath following the big battle at the end of Volume 3. As the Jura Tempest Federation continues to grow, Rimuru’s life becomes more political. At the beginning of all this, he was just some guy. Now he is the ruler of a country with thousands looking to him for leadership. A little self-reflection on this fact makes Rimuru realize the full implications of his new position and he starts to make additional arrangements to ensure the Federation will be a lasting thing. At the same time, his own desires and a promise to an old friend also start to influence his choices.

Compared to the first three books, the stakes are not high here. There are stakes, but not on the level of Rimuru and co. being wiped out if they fail. In this book, their lives are more everyday (or as close as possible for them) instead of being thrust into another massive battle. The story here also expands on Shizu’s backstory and what Rimuru’s promise to her ultimately means. Getting extra development for a character whose personal story is already wrapped up is rare, but the way FUSE does it works well.

One annoying thing about Volume 4 is the cliffhanger. The book ends on a high note, but it’s still singing once you reach the last page. But overall, this was a solid volume in the series. Not having any major events happen let FUSE spend more time world-building instead. The cliffhanger does show that Rimuru will be back in the action during the next book. This cliffhanger is another piece of content cut from the anime (though they do foreshadow it). Presumably, season 2 will start with it. With a new season of the show confirmed, here’s to hoping the anime continues to adapt these books well.

This is kind of weird, but I skipped two or three novels to jump in here, as I'd seen the first season of TenSura and this volume acts as a transition between Seasons One and Two. (I say I skipped "two or three" novels because I think I did real Volume 1, but it may have been the web-novel version; I don't remember.)

So the last few episodes of Season One of the anime cover Rimuru acting as a teacher to five isekai'd kids who were previously cared for by Shizu. I figured this volume would expand on that story, assuming the anime might have truncated things, but I guess that's not the case. What's weird is the first few chapters are about Rimuru visiting Beast, Dwarf, and human countries to forge new alliances for his Jura-Tempest Federation; this doesn't happen in Season One of the show, so I assume it begins Season Two, making the timeline kinda wonky. Another thing that's kind of weird is that this novel is mostly episodic until the kid stuff, which is still only two consecutive chapters. I assumed the arcs would be limited to one per novel, like many light novel series, but I guess that's not the case. Not a bad thing, just unexpected.

The peak of this volume is, oddly, the epilogue, wherein Rimuru begins fighting Hinata. I assume this will be continued in Volume 5.

****

As a tall secretary with big titties, Shion is already hot as fuck. But the illustration of her drunken face on Page 84 is just adorable...!!! 😍

As I thought, the writing actually does get better with each book, but it happened much faster than I expected. The over-detailed wastes of words were switched for well placed reintroduction of characters turning even the side characters memorable. The writer probably intended to make each character memorable to serve the size of the story, and up until this chapter, he did so by repeating the same character traits over and over again, but now the characters are introduced in several instances across the story which makes memorizing them far easier and it also makes for a faster pacing because the character introductions now serve the story as well. I'd give it a 4.5 for now because there's still a place for improvement, but if he keeps getting better, I'd be able to recommend this book not only to weebs but to bookworms as well.

P.S. The story is still as good as it ever was.

Rimuru finally gets to take a working vacation in the human lands . That's after receiving a dream from Shizu.

it's not all fun and games because humans are not as straight forward as monsters when it comes with negotiations.

But he ends up meeting others similar to him as well as an enemy ready to destroy him.

Such is the life of a slime.

This book had lots of different adventures in it including the continuing Shizu arc. There were plenty of new characters as well as revisiting old ones.

Other than a few places where the dialogue confused me as to who was talking, it was an excellent book.

Not bad, but not great. It felt a lot like a "filler episode" at least until the last 25% of the book, maybe even the last 1/3rd. The first part was slow, not much happens, and frankly wasn't all that engaging. It doesn't have to be action packed, but what is happening should at least be interesting. The visits to and from the other nations sadly wasn't all that. Even once Rimuru makes a pitstop to take care of some kids it takes a bit to get that part of things moving. Ending was decent and hopefully promises volume 5 to be solid.

As I still like the series I'll be picking more up eventually.

At this point I'm wondering if there will be any volume of this fantastic series that I don't give a 5 star rating. Even the "weaker" ones are still better than most of what is out there and thus deserve their rating. This volume finds Rimaru heading out of the town and into a human city in order to take care of some magic-born kids who he hopes to save before their magic gets out of control and kills them. This is a fun, almost side-story (even though it is important to the story) as he gets to meet a bunch of new people and make even more allies in his journey! This is really the a lead in to the next next novel which I know (from seeing the anime) is going to be epic!

After dealing with the ambassadors from demon lords and a state visit to the lands of the dwarves, Rimuru sets of for the human lands. He has some unfinished business inherited from Shizue: saving a group of summoned children fated to die due to a magical overload (the result of the summoning process). The story is more focused on Rimuru then volume 3 and as a result for me a more entertaining read. Otherwise no surprises. The cliff hanger ending makes me happy I bought the book long after the availability of the translation of volume 5...

I really LOVE this series! I started reading it as the manga, but the novels are a bit different and it adds a lot of detail that I didn't see in the anime. The difference makes it worth it to enjoy both versions of the story. This is the last novel volume represented in the first season of the anime, so I hope there are more to come! There is a lot of action and strategy thinking and there's plenty of comedy to break up the tedious parts.

This book is one of my favorite so far, I love when Rimuru goes to Englasia to help Shizu's students. It's one of the more heartwarming parts of this series. I am also enjoying all the small details that are in this that weren't in the manga or anime. My only thing, which I have complaints about through the whole series in all formats, is about Rimuru's mindset. It just rubs me the wrong way and can be irritating in the context of where the story is.

This series is too awesome.
Slime as a hero, who has an awesome and pleasant (not selfish) personality is refreshing. I know sometimes having that much power without some selfishness kinda looks foolish, but that was what I love about this series. All the characters are very nice even though they have a less presence.
Definitely will continue to read this series further!

This is it. Four novels in, and I'm finally up to the point where I don't know what happens next. There are some admirable differences in the light novel compared to the anime that I really enjoyed seeing, mainly the large chunk of the ending that I'll not spoil.

Now I eagerly await to get my hands on the fifth one, so I can dive into Slime - now without knowing what's going to happen!

Still very much worth the read. There are so many more details that explain things that I just accepted as "this happened off screen and we will never know how/when/why" in the anime. Very much the proof that reading the book first is better than watching the show first. On to the next one!

Another great book! I just wish they would leave the Japanese honorifics, it sounds kinda weird to read Mr. Rimuru for everything instead of Rimuru-sama and Rimuru-sensei, Rimuru-dono etc.
