Worries, fears, and stress--the people of minister Jeremiah Burroughs' congregations had them in 1645 during the English Civil War. His call to faithful contentment was a comfort to them then and has been to many readers in the centuries since. Now his classic text has been reworded in modern English and abridged to focus his points for today's reader. Burroughs' wisdom from a bygone age may be just what you need now. Another book in this series is 8 Blessings for Christians.
This is my second read of Burroughs. This particular version is an abridgment and rewording in modern language. It lacks nothing of the power and directness of Burroughs’ 1648 original.
Contentment.. in these days of COVID-19 tumult seems a foreign concept. And yet, it is EXACTLY the spiritual vaccine we need to face our troubles and tumults.
A bit legalistic in some parts. Had to keep reminding myself that God’s WORD is where I go to for true contentment. But there were some really good parts!!
Helpful in cutting through some of the archaic language and abbreviating the repetition, but that may have made it feel more blunt and exacerbated the portions where Burroughs is basically saying "your suffering is because you sinned so stop being discontent because you deserve this". However it is still rich with helpful analogies and full of glorious, encouraging truth.
Started reading this book 3 years ago. Our group was side-tracked by covid. Re-reading this now. What a great book! I know I shouldn't do this but, read chapter 8 first. It is the last chapter but tells you how to achieve contentment. This book is so helpful in this fallen world, that I would like to read it every year! Not just for my own edification, but for the help that I might be able to offer to so many folks that seen to be suffering in this fallen world.
