I love series like this; due to growing up on countless television series, multiple short stories set in the same universe were what I was used to, and I still enjoy them to this day. Back in the day, I used to write such tales during spare moments at school; those compositions are all thankfully long gone.

As you'd expect, I had fun with this ninth volume in the Eli Diaries series. This one provides a look into Maggie's past, which, given the nature of her character, is rather haunting. Still, this series has been edgy from the beginning; that's the way I like my Christian fiction. As producer David McFadzean (Home Improvement) once said in an issue of CCM, "Only exposing ourselves to Christian books, movies, and music that coddles us can actually keep us in our own sin." I couldn't agree more; that's why we need more literature--and, for that matter, entertainment--like this.

Maggie counters her bad-girl rep by avoiding guys, except for Eli and his gang. Eli’s different, a real friend with no ulterior motives. With hard work and her new friend, Maggie’s life is looking up. Even college is within her grasp and her new passion, surfing, gives her more joy than she’s ever known with a guy. But will a little carelessness cause her to lose everything?

Maggie, from the Eli Diaries, continues to evolve in Melody Carlson’s novelette (59 pgs) With the Tide. Delving deeply into Maggie’s character makes a fascinating study of human nature. It also provides insight into first-century circumstances surrounding the character of Jesus and his disciples, both men and women. The story is a little episodic, but it makes a nice quick read and is standalone.

In this spiritual speculative, Jesus (Eli) comes to earth in an alternative universe in the equivalent 21st-century where he attends a local California high school. The series chronicles five characters as they interact with Eli the Messiah

Maggie leads this episode and we see her growing appreciation for the love of the Lord and her passion for surfing. Eli's influence is significant once again. His gentle, faith filled wisdom and confidence.

Maggie is quite the surfer but as one expects with the title of the episode her exuberance gets her in trouble. In the water. She experiences flashbacks of her life, of being mistreated and abused. In what she believes are her final moments she cries out to God and at the same time surrenders to whatever awaits her.

The story ends with her new found wisdom helping her speak less harshly to Martha, whose religiosity annoys Maggie no end. Suddenly, Maggie has a new found understanding of how love changes people.

A good quick read. Bring on No 10.
