The Morning Star

Where’s the support group for demon parents?

Samael, the OG Satan who no one has seen in over two million years is supposedly roaming the world and killing angels, just like all those Elvis sightings. If Elvis was a murdering Fallen angel, that is. As the new-and-improved Satan, it’s my responsibility to track him down and bring him to justice.

I can’t even manage to keep my adopted infant angel from repeatedly killing his corporeal form, but somehow I’m supposed to get control of Hel and face down the Fallen archangel whose shoes I’m struggling to fill.

It’s going to be the shortest fight ever, but if I don’t win, it won’t just be my funeral. Samael has changed, and if he wins, the world under his iron fist will fall into chaos—the bad kind of chaos.

Debra lives in a little house in the woods in Maryland with three sons, and a Noah’s ark of four legged family members. She has a corporate job during the day, and writes novels at night, after the kids are tucked in bed.

She drives an Excursion affectionately called The Beast, couldn’t carry a tune if you duct taped it to her back, and enjoys an occasional cosmopolitan (heavy on the vodka). On a good day, she jogs and horseback rides, hopefully managing to keep the horse between herself and the ground.

Her only known super power is ‘Identify Roadkill’.

And here we are at the conclusion of this series (spin-offs and cameos from the mains will continue, so says the afterward). I liked what I saw unfold. I like how the series 'concluded'. There was nothing really 'wrong' with this book (beyond massive editing issues, seriously, massive - misspellings, words may or may not have merged together, and other issues - but that, really, plays no part in my rating). I do not rate books 'nothing really wrong with this, so it gets 5 stars'. Books, for me, do not start at five stars then have that rating chipped away at. Books start at no specific rating. Certain things will have me add or subtract a star, but I mostly work on a gut feeling ('this feels like 4 stars, this feels like . . .' with an added touch that I've read several thousand books, rated them, rerated them, massaged my impressions of them, and my gut feeling has a bit of 'this book is slight better than that book, worse that that book over there, therefore, since those two have those ratings, this would fall somewhere between those too books' - occasionally I even deliberately work a books rating out that way, mostly it's gut (which is why I go back through and stare at stuff, and move books up and down the rating shelves, once I've thought about the books more)) .

All of which leads me to: as I noted, good concluding book with some editing issues which play no part in my rating, and nothing really 'wrong' with it. There was also nothing so earth-shattering good that would add extra points to the score. So, gut reaction, this book would fall somewhere around 4.344 stars.

This is the tenth book in the series - it's hard to say much about it because the books do build from one to the next. The characters grow, the story grows. You cannot read book 10 first. You cannot read book 5 first. I'm not going to say that you have to read book 1 first but . . . you kinda do. Mixing in the side books if and when you might desire to do so - you do learn things by reading those books, as I found out. Mostly about the side characters. And how they came together. Technically I probably should have read the side book in between this one and the previous book in this series, the one called . . . it was 'Penance', right? That was the title? Something like that. It was described, self-described at that, as being super depressing so . . . I skipped it.

Oh, and by side-books, I mean the ones starring the major side characters, like the five archangels, and the like. The ones that do not have their own series. The side-series seem to be more filling in some blanks of lower level side characters - at least that's the way it felt. Granted, I am basing that off of mostly skipping the half-breed series (or was it completely skipping it?) and not feeling as if I lost anything from skipping that series.

Right, it's 2 am, my eyes are barely open, and I do not really know what I've written (and, see: eyes barely open, I can't really reread anything at moment).

Good book, good conclusion; not great book, not outstanding book. A book I cannot really describe fully because it is the tenth book in the series, and someone reading the review, to 'get' anything from a more detailed 'this is the setup', would probably need to have a good prior understanding of this series.

Rating: 4.344

94 points/100 (4.75 stars/5).

The final book. The elves are here and working on fitting in. The Angels are locked out of Aaru and living on earth. Now, Samael is back looking to bring the demons out of Hel to kill the Angels and take over Earth. Sam thought her duties as Iblis were complicated before!

A part of me is shocked this is over. I've been reading this series for years. I kind of started to believe this never would end, that we'd get spinoffs for years. I love Sam, though. I love this series.

I liked how this ended. I sort of hate that it is over because I want more, but I like how it ended since it had to end. We saw Sam grow up into the demon (angel?) she needed to be. She became the Iblis, and now she is living up to that. She went from a chaotic little imp to the leader of Hel, a loving significant other, and a baby she promised to raise. Not even the threat of war is going to fuck this up for her.

In some ways, I feel this is over too fast. Everything comes to a head and then finishes in a single book, in basically a single week. I just have troubles believing that beings of this age can have everything take place in a week. Hell, the whole series only takes a couple years. Also, it doesn't really feel like the end. There are so many things left open at the end of this series. "Oh, we'll figure it out eventually!" Well, thanks for the dumping it on me and running then, I guess, Dunbar.

I know there are going to be more spinoffs and side novels down the road. I just... Frankly, I just don't find them as good. Sure they may tie up the story eventually. I just don't really care about them. They're not as good. They're not as fun. They take forever to get where they are going and then they end poorly. This was Dunbar's chance to end everything and start something new. She didn't take that chance. There are, as of writing this, TWENTY-THREE books in this world, totaling just over 2 million words. That is enough. it needs to be enough. We need to stop dragging out series until there is nothing good left until a dirty, rotting core that we still hold onto going "but look, it's so good!".

This was a good book. It was a good ending to the Imp series. I don't think I'll read more in this world anytime soon. It needs to bee enough.

I have been having a terrible time writing a review for this book. Please, don't get me wrong. It was phenomenal. And it left me feeling like a proper ending was delivered. But I'm finding it very difficult to let go of it and give a final review. I do so love them all!

I find it has left me very sad to see them go. The characters and world that Debra Dunbar created in her Imp Series way outshines her other series. I know that's probably not fair, but I am going to seriously miss Sam and Gregory and Snip and Nyalla, and oh, Lux! How I'm going to miss Lux! I'll even miss Gimlet and Gabe and even Tasma and Doriel. Oh and how awfully ironic for Uriel to return just for the series to end. And the laughs! Oh good grief, how she portrayed Sam so that you couldn't help but laugh at her antics. And her Lows? Let's just say if her Lows joined with Minions we'd all be in serious trouble! Can you imagine?

Debra Dunbar, in other words, created such a massive, solid, believable world with characters that we all grew to love to read about, that we will all feel bereft not having them to love and laugh at and laugh with and cry with and fret with... And how difficult that is! To create a world so complete that your readers actually feel the loss when the series ends! I'm sure we'll see more in novellas and shorts, but that's not quite the same. Damn I'm going to miss them all!

It is a rarity to find an author that grabs me to such an extent that I'm truly upset when their series ends. Debra Dunbar is one of those authors. She has exceptional talent, and I can only hope that she uses that talent again at some point to create another world that is full of irony and upside down beliefs and characters that dig into our hearts to stay. I hope she will once again take on the typical antiquated beliefs of legend and religion and turn them on their heads for us; create us another universe that defies everything we believe to be true and crack us up in the process.

So Very Well Done, Debra Dunbar! I was hooked from day one and must now go through withdrawal. Your Imp series was one of a kind.

I love this series. Sam, Gregory, too many to count. From raising the FICO scores importance to that of the deadly sins to seeing Gabriel finally loosen up a little. This series and all its spinoffs have been amazing. I know there is a novella and another novel after this one, but this did really feel like the end of the series. The Iblis really came into her own.

4.5 Stars. The Morning Star is full book 10 of the Imp series. I waited a really long time to read this book because I wasn't ready to see this series end. I have grown to love Sam and Gregory and all of the characters we have met along the way. When I finally decided it was time and that I couldn't wait any longer to find out how the series ends, I clicked into the series on GR and noticed that there is now a 10.5 that is out and a book 11 to be released soon. So now, I don't really know what is happening with the series.

I really enjoyed this book. Sam came into her own as the Iblis and ruler of Hel. I enjoyed seeing how everything was wrapped up with the ongoing battles and fight for earth. It was great seeing Sam and Gregory as parents and their angel baby, Lux, was great. I think he is going to be quite formidable as an adult.

It would have been nice to have more of a wrap up for the side characters but perhaps that is why there is a book 11 now. I guess time will tell.

As far as the narration goes, the same narrator has read the entire series. I'm not overly fond of her voices but I find that I usually get used to her and am able to enjoy the story.

The Morning Star is book ten and the final book in the urban fantasy Imp series.

To get the very best experience from this series I highly recommend reading them in order.

It all began with Samantha Martin (Sam) a demon; an angel of chaos. Sam has lived among the humans for forty years until her peaceful life changed forever. She became the Iblis, the leader of Hel, the lover of an angel and the one who banished all the angels from heaven.

Sam now faces her biggest test. A powerful ancient has crossed to the human world and is killing angels and planning to destroy everything in his way. Sam needs to find a way to earn the respect that her title bestows and stop this demon, even if he is the long lost brother of the angelic order.

I shall be sad to see this series end I've really enjoyed the chaos that is Sam.

Overall, my expectation that a series featuring a demon making her way up to become Queen of Hel (only one toothpick here) was not what I was expecting. The characters were ... fun, the very chaotic imps, the Mr. Rogers-esque greater demon, the sweet and sour sauce happy worker angel, even the stodgy bureaucratic arch-angel were all enjoyably delightful, even as the protagonist, Sam, bulldozes her way from one catastrophe to the next, always (shall I say miraculously) coming out ahead with all the panache of a winged Harley Quinn. At the same time, Debra Dunbar manages to explore deeper issues about ethics and morality while skewering shiboleths on all sides. I would heartily recomment the whole series.

I didn't realize this was the 'end' of the series since there are more after it. But it turned out to be an excellent place to end the series.

Awesome

As usual imps rule!!! This series has been one that I have thoroughly enjoyed. The author noted at the end, that this was the last book in the series, but there will be spinoffs. Although this books ending tied many loose ends, but I was hoping for more "meat" in the epilogue. Particularly in regards to the various relationships, also whether Sam and Gregory have a child of their own. I hope the spinoffs, gives updates on the characters. No matter what, I enjoyed this book and every book written in this series. If you have not given the series a chance, you are missing out on a whole new world.

The Morning Star - 5 stars
Imp Series - 4.25 stars

This is the final book to a 10 book series by Debra Dunbar. The Morning Star was an enjoyable conclusion to love/hate series that I've been reading for months. The beginning of the book was nicely paced though I highly disagreed with some of the inner monologues Sam had concerning demons deserving spot in the human world (though I understand where she was coming from now having read the full book.)

The middle -end was when the book really picked up, the battle scenes were nicely done (short but I got the visual) the twist was throughout the story was great. Lux was a cute addition to the story as well.

My only complaint about this book was we didn't see much/mention of the characters from the beginning of the series (Wyatt was not even mentioned in this whole book despite how big of a role he played in Sam's life in the beginning...) I would have liked more of a conclusion to see what happens in the future. These were just small critiques though and I still give this a 5-star book.

As for the Imp series as a whole, I had a lot of fun reading through all 10 books but it is sad seeing how some of the prevalent characters introduced in the beginning slowly fizzled out the more you got into the series. Some characters like Amber have completely dropped altogether. Also, I have a love/hate feeling for Sam, sometimes I'm rooting for her but other times she comes off very annoying. Lastly, the lackluster side plots really killed some of the books and I felt like if they weren't included the series could have been more of a 6 book series instead of 10.

Overall, still enjoyed this book and the series and I'm sad its come to an end (I don't plan on reading any spin-offs) I had my problems for the series but I'll miss the wonderful set of characters that I got to know.

The Morning Star - Imp Series Book 10

The Iblis, Satan, a demon, also known as the human Samantha Martin was supposedly in charge of all the demons in Hel. Sam had the sword of the Iblis and yet no one believed an Imp could be the leader of Hel. No respect or trust was ever shown toward her, not from angels, demons, werewolves, sorcerers and even humans.
She was in love with the archangel Michael and he with her. She lived in America, but had a few homes in Hel.
This story was about “Cockroach”, as the loving Angel Michael affectionately called Sam and a war, between someone saying they were the banished archangel Samael. A war was started, as this so called angel gathered thousands of demons to cross into the human world from Hel, with the sole purpose of killing any angel or human being living on Earth. The total eradication of humans, angels and laying waste to all of Earth was their goal.
It was up to Sam, the true archangels Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, other angels faithful to the cause, werewolves and Sam’s demons to fight and try to save the human world.
At every turn, it seemed evil would prevail. Thousand of good demons and angels were dead, with those left, with their backs to the wall, facing death.
Sam was forced to make a life threatening decision to fight to the death, if there was any hope for Earth and all her inhabitants.
This was the best book of the series, for me. I loved every single story. I feel an immediate loss, now that Sam’s story is at an end. She was a crazy, foul mouthed, loyal, loving, protective, demanding justice Imp and an Angel of Chaos! I do hope we meet Samantha Martin again, as the author Debra Dunbar hints we might.
I highly recommend this Imp Book series.

This is a very hard review to write... very hard, and primarily because this is the last of this series. Thank goodness it isn't totally the last of the characters in it, I look forward to any time they pop up. Book 1 in this series was my first book by the author and I have been hooked ever since.

First, let me tell you what this book is not:
It is not a light, quick read. At least it was not quick for me, mainly because it is an involved plot/story with logs of interactions going on.
It is not a humorous story though it does have it's funny scenes.

Now for what it is:
It is an in-depth, detail, well presented story that wraps up an incredible series, and it's told by an excellent story teller.
It is the perfect ending to a long, wonderful story.

If you want a riveting tale of demons, a “once was” imp who is now The Iblis, angels, Arch Angels, Fallen Angels, Lows, and a few other interesting characters thrown in, this is your book. If you enjoy lots of twists and turns and unexpected events, this is your book. If you want a new, quiet book without having to put any effort into it... this is NOT your book. A quick word of caution: If you haven't read books 1 thru 9, go back to the beginning; it will be worth every word you read getting here.

And that's it, my last read in the Imp series... maybe. I probably will re-read them all whenever the time permits. Yes, they are that good – worth another go at it and not many books I read are worth that!

Good ending to a series.

I had stepped away from the Imp novels for a few years and suddenly found myself with a Lot of time on my hands and was surprised to see the series had reached a conclusion at book 10. Now this is not a bad urban fantasy/paranormal romance series. And it beats out a lot of others by a mile. What caused me to shelve the series before was the endless “here’s a goal, it to get there, you need to fetch this item form this person, who wants an items from this person...”ad nauseam. Fetch stories are ok, but ten books of them are a bit much. However, I reread the whole series end to end and still Loved the first two books, got annoyed and irritated in the middle six and enjoyed the last two. I am giving this five stars because Ms. Dunbar did a very good job of wrapping up the series and not leaving too many hanging threads. She had Most of the main players give a nod, bow out, and even added some interesting new characters in the end. She says in her Author’ Note she will be writing spin off novels set in the world, but this story arc of the Iblis and Archangel’ romance is over.
This series is primarily a romance as Everyone is looking for a mate, love, (or three) and pair up accordingly. Refreshingly there are more than just MF pairs, though some of that is because Angels can change their gender. I probably will not look for more books set in this world, but I will look for other novels written by Ms. Dunbar.

What a wickedly fun series!

Debra Dunbar created a world of demons and angels who had previously attempted to remain hidden from the seven billion humans on the planet. Two or three books back, that all got shot to Hel.

Samantha Martin as an unlikely leader was hysterical while leading her House of Lows into battle in Aaru. This time, she must juggle her duties as Angel of Chaos, Iblis and adopted mother of a not so innocent baby angel while preparing for an "end of days" style apocalyptic battle with Samael, some Ancients and a lot of warmonger demons who seem ready to destroy their own vacation destination on the whim of the former archangel now fallen angel, her boyfriend's brother who had two million years to stew with all the original Angels of Chaos who were wrongfully sentenced to an eternity of vengeance inducing banishment in Hel. Well, that's a long run on sentence and a whole lot of mess for the young Imp to clean up.

Debra Dunbar's irreverent tale skims over what happens to petrified human residents who have been subjected to the reality of dragons, elves, vampires, nephilim, angels and demons on Earth in too short a time period.

We get to see Samantha's relationship with Gregory mature and blossom. Meanwhile, she discovers that she can embrace her unique set of skills rather than compare herself to the rigid, bureaucratic Angel of Order style of problem solving. Our little imp has finally grown up, sniff.

What a wickedly fun series!

Such a great series - I laughed, I felt, I might have even gulped a little.

Sam stayed true to herself and yet, she has grown so much. I was a bit frustrated with Gregory in this one, guy's sending a hell lot of mixed messages for sure. But oh well, more power to Sam, who basically ended this series singlehandedly.

I really enjoyed the twists and turns about (fake or not) Samael though I caught on pretty early on. Still enjoyed the entire convoluted story and its resolution.

My only tiny gripe with the ending is that I wished for a little more wrap-up scenes. The epilogue was great, but there was so much more I needed at that point and felt a bit left hanging in the air. Great, battle's done, but do we really need to end the book right away? So, I'm holding out for that novella showing Sam's future to give me my fluff :P

It’s over and I have so many emotions

I’ve been waiting for this for years and I’m so sad it’s over. This book was incredible, better than I could have imagined. The ending made me tear up and was done so well. Debra really did justice to wrapping up Sam’s story.

The final battle has arrived and someone claiming to be Samael is leading an army to destroy the human world. Sam doesn’t buy that shit for a minute. She has never really accepted this title of the Iblis, but she really figures out what it means in this novel.

The character growth, the signature laugh out loud moments, the impy antics.... I can’t believe it’s over! This series was amazing and is truly in the top three of my favorite series ever. This last installment just reaffirmed it. I was so satisfied with Sam’s ending and, although Sam has always been a strong character, she really found her place in this book.

I love this series and I recommend it to anyone that knows how to laugh, love, and has a little bit of demon inside.

And also, Gregory is still one of the sexiest book boyfriends! I could listen to him scold me anytime!

Overall this was a great book. I loved it and it's a fitting end to a great series. I'm going to miss it, even though Sam will get cameos in different books. I hope we will get more books with Sam as a main character in the future, even though no one said anything like that.
I love this series for who Sam is, and the fact she really isn't human, doesn't act like one and doesn't think like one. She's a demon and it shows. Her morals are different than ours and that makes the book more enjoyable. If she's thinking about doing something unacceptable by human standards, you don't know if she'll actually do it. She just might.
Damn it. I'm so sad this series is ending. I know all good things come t an end, but I REALLY, REALLY hope that there will be another book somewhere in the future.
SPOILER AHEAD
I new who Samael was hiding as from the moment the character appeared, but it was the only thing I guessed, so it's not enough to lower the rating for me.

The end of a wonderful series! I hate to see it end! Sam has to fight a war with an demon who claims to be Samael. He is charismatic but will he win? There is a somewhat of a revolution going on with a fake Samael trying to take over the world and kill all humans and all the angels. Sam as the Iblis must prevent it happening. She discovers her failings but with help from Gimlet she will find who she is and win!
Lots of action and help comes from an interesting source! Lux is very smart for a baby angel and Sam and Gregory as parents is enlightening! I enjoyed reading the book and the entire series. You have action, mystery( where and who is Samael), plot twists, romance and humor! I recommend the entire series and as a reader see how Lux grows, how the demons survive in a human world and lot more of Sam and Gregory and the other angels!

Incredible

I have absolutely loved reading the evolution of Sam from the very first time that I read Demon Bound. I was sad that this would be the last book in the series, but you know what? It's ok. The ending satisfied the main story arc and all of the little storylines that sprang up along the way. Plus, there will supposedly be Sam cameos in future books set in this universe, according to the author notes at the end. Bonus! So, break out your chicken wands and grab a handful of beaks to celebrate with Sam and the gang! I'm not sure when we'll next meet, but I'm already looking forward to it!

Loved this series! It's been such a long time since I've come across a complete set of books that I found myself unable to put down.

I love that it goes against so many of the 'norms' we see nowadays when it comes to paranormal. Sam in particular is a breath of fresh air.

Highly recommend the Imp collection. The only drawback is that this was the final one and that makes me sad. Seriously, I feel like I needed more from the ending. More closure? Maybe we can be given a new series from the perspective of one of the angel/demon spawn set a few hundred years from now? I feel like that's a fair compromise for my happiness :p

I think the author ties up all the loose ends well. The book has enough action to keep it going and the comic antics of Lux & the Lows just adds to the story. I found the series as a whole to be rather good, giving 4-5 stars to each. The way the author twists mythology to fit her creation was also fun to read. Sam is definitely a to-thine-own-self-be-true kind of character. Her methods and actions very impish. Action, laughs, romance, all pretty well balanced for a good read. All in all, I recommend the series.

A good entry to a long and great series. I could give a long drawn out review detailing everything that happens while avoiding spoilers but that isn't my style.

I will say that this book is exactly what it adversities itself as, the final book in a series where demons and angels are proven to not be that different from each other. It gives a satisfying send off to these characters, and even introduces a cool one.

I can't rightly say more then this, if you liked the rest of the series this is a fulfilling.

This book is bittersweet. It's the last book and everything about it was perfect, from the troubles being caused to the end, yet... It's the last book. I truly don't want to leave this couple. The relationship between Gregory and Sam is just pure wonderful. The stories are full of depth and humor and this one didn't disappoint.

5 star plus... because as sad as it was to see the end of the series, I can't say that anything was missed and every question was answered.

3.5 stars. The first half of “The Morning Star” was slower than I would have expected, but the last half did pick up the pace. Overall, this was a good end to the series, and I’m glad to have read it.

What’s next for Debra Dunbar, I wonder? Whatever it is, I’ll definitely read it!

Over Too Soon!

I love this whole series and this one was an awesome end (maybe) to it. It was action packed and got all the feels too. I was glad to read that it may not be the end end of all my favorite characters in the afterword. This was everything and a bag of Utz Crab Chips too!

The last book of a great series.

I've loved this series from book 1, and while I'm sad to see it end, it finished as it started. Funny, poignant, respectful and irreverent. Will look forward to Debra's new books, but Sam will always have a special place in my heart. Can't wait for the audio book 😋

Best damn story and series

I love that Sam came into her own! For an imp, she is one smart chick and as the Iblis, well I wish she was real and would run for president, she understands all the factions that make up the world, humans, angels, ancients, demons and imps.
People of you only read 1 series, this should be it, now go enjoy.
