Fred ( Winifred) and Watson the corgi.are back. series Book 6 is about Paulie ( the owner of the pet store ) has been seen with a 2 woman. And it kinda weird for Fred to find that he has a woman that is married. But I'm this book you see Paulie being stand offish ( especially with his 2 corgis Flotsam and Jetsam.) In Bookshop slash bakery Cozy Corgi ( named after Watson) there are 2 twins Ben and Nick from book 5. helping Katie ( the bakery part owner) and Fred with their bookshop. They are wonderful at it. Fred decided to pay Paulie a visit and finds a disturbing scene. Is Paulie holding back something is not that why he lay almost dead in his pet shop. I love all these books and the series. I love how Mildred the author describes stores ( in this one a glass blowing store) of interesting facts or just fantasy stores that Fred comes across in her ventures ( usually when Fred wants to go her sluething. These are a must reads!
I love the covers for this series and how each one relates to each story. Take a good look at this cover. It shows the story in such a fun way.
When Paulie, a friend of Fred’s, is arrested for murder, she offers to help in any way she can. She’d investigate all leads. And take care of Paulie’s two crazy Corgi’s, Flotsam and Jetsam. Watson is quite put out. You see, being the laid back dog that he is, he’s never warmed up to these dogs, Sure, their Corgi’s, but they’re so exuberant and out of control he has no time for them. Looks like Fred and Watson have their hands full.
Something I’ve enjoyed in this series is how the author introduces new characters via Fred questioning them and following one lead to the next and the next. And each book has a known character take the fore as they come under suspicion. Bits of their personal lives are revealed and the secrets about them that were hinted at in earlier stories are revealed.
I’ll admit, one of the most fun parts of this book for me was the dogs. Watson doesn’t like the rowdy guests that have taken over his quiet little home. Flotsam and Jetsam treat everyone and everything like it’s the bestest toy in the world. How Watson handles these two is clever and laughable. And Fred might want to take a page from his handbook.
A fun little fact. Corgi’s shed, a lot. Going by how Fred described it, I pictured Watson as a doggie Pig Pen from the Charlie Brown cartoons, with a cloud of dog hair following him everywhere he went.
Almost forgot, Fred and Branson are officially dating. These two butt heads all the time as he wants her to stay out of police business and she continues to stick her nose in it. I’m not sure how they’ll work that out and still feel romantic. It was fun finding out.
Be sure to check out the Author’s Note at the end of the book. You’ll learn more about Watson. And there’s also a recipe for healthy dog treats, Watson’s favorite food group.
Once again the author gave me a tangled mystery, quirky, delightful characters and sweet puppy fun, and I’m still loving this series.
I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.
I love that we start out with a rude awakening by two tiny ears and a little black nose, demanding attention.
Fred is Watson’s mom and she takes very good care of him, spoiling him with treats.
When Winifred Page moved to Estes Park, she knew it was the right thing. Throw in a hunky sheriff who has the hots for her and the occasional murder amongst friends, what more could she ask for?
I love cozies for their feel good fun and quirky characters, with mysteries that are light on the gruesomeness and just enough danger to keep me on my toes.
I wonder about her relationship with Branson, the sheriff. Will they ever get together? Will she let her guard down and allow him to become a part of her life?
Estes Park is a small town and we all know what that means. Everyone knows everyone else’s business.
Jealousy does rear its ugly head between Branson and Ben. How many bachelors can there be in a small town, and Fred has two of them vying for her affection. Who will she choose when she does decide to commit?
I think we all know what will happen when Branson tells her to keep her nose out of his investigation. After all, women sleuths are meant to sleuth.
Chaotic Corgis by Mildred Abbot is another fun-filled romp through the mystery with dogs, cats, parrots….and their humans. I look forward to the next one.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Chaotic Corgis by Mildred Abbott.
Well I didn't guess that! I love when I have basically no clue and a nice twist is thrown at me.
The Gist: Fred's pet store owning semi-friend has been attacked! Left for dead in his own store. And a customer murdered! But it's not enough to just take care of his wild corgis while he's in the hospital. Nope, Fred is going to start ruffling feathers and asking questions.
Fred grows on you. She has quirks, she's not perfect. Sometimes a little too stubborn or head strong. But the girl is determined, intelligent, caring. Loves a good mystery. I'm enjoying watching her find her place in life. Friends, work, family, a happy home life with her pup Watson.
The mystery this time left me rather baffled. I really didn't put hardly any of it together which was fun. Kept me guessing. And rather ticked at a particular hunky cop and potential love interest. Whew. Yeah.
All in all, another fun mystery from Abbott. I love all the herd babies and the people that Fred is surrounding herself with. Even if they drive me crazy now and again.
FINALLY- Fred pushing Leo into the friendship zone kinda sees through Branson 🙌🏾🙌🏾. I am so NOT team jerk .. I mean Branson.
This Book focuses on solving the mystery surrounding Pauly and the murder of the crazy cat lady! Fred is once again at odds with Branson, who continues to be a total jerk. Now don’t get me wrong, Fred needs to calm down and remember that she’s a civilian NOT a cop, and her father having been a detective doesn’t give her special Powers or privileges to interfere in investigations, howeverrr I give her a pass because I dislike Branson that much 😁😁😁
This is such a fun, and entertaining mystery. The characters are intriguing, not to mention Watson, the corgi. The mystery kept me guessing with plenty twists. This is such a great mystery series, well worth reading.
I’m really not much of a cozy mystery reader but after reading book one I have been hooked. Partly it’s Watson, since I am an animal lover though I’ve never had a corgi but I love his attitude and the way he and Fred communicate. Fred is the sort of strong female character I like to see and her strength and independence are sorely tested in this episode. There’s a highly unusual murder for Fred to puzzle out with a surprising outcome on a couple of fronts.
Hints of more trouble to come in Estes Park will keep me reading this fun, charming series. I also feel very sad over the author’s loss of Watson’s inspiration but Watson will live on for a long time I hope. Also, it’s a very good thing I no longer have dogs because if I did make the recipe for dog treats at the end of the book, they’d never get any anyway, because I might eat them all myself!
These books. They're so comfy and cute and easygoing, and after six books, the characters are starting to feel like old friends.
There was an abundance of Watson this time around, which is never a bad thing (though the note at the end about his real-life inspiration will make you cry), and the rest of the ever-growing ensemble, from Fred to Katie to Paulie to Susan to Branson to Myrtle and beyond, all get moments of growth and change; that's no easy task when there are dozens of characters to keep up with.
Estes Park is rapidly becoming to the US what Midsomer is to the UK. A notorious place to live in especially if you want to stay alive. As Fred and Sgt Branson Wexler's romance heats up she discovers another murder which puts their relationship under strain. Another enjoyable read, well balanced between lighthearted and more serious moments.
This is another entertaining episode in the life of bookstore owner Winifred Page and her treat-obsessed corgi, Watson. Though honestly, if I were Fred, I'd be worried about going anywhere, as often as she seems to stumble over dead (or dying) bodies. The mystery is clever enough to not be predictable, and I liked the insight into Fred's friend Paulie (and his rambunctious corgis Flotsam and Jetsam). This is definitely a cozy mystery worth reading.
I debated about the 4 stars because I have read all the books in this series. The stories are about a young 30ish woman who has pushed the reset button on her life. For those of us that have started over its easy to relate to a lot of her reactions to the people & events in her life. This story is a lead in to future stories. There are unfinished, unexplained, and unexpected parts of her life, both present, past, and future that the main character is dealing with. I'm not the author however I suspect that the decisions she makes in this book and the next one are unresolved issues that are part of future stories. The stories need Branson and her reactions to him unfortunately seem to judge him based on her past experiences & failed marriage. There are aspects of her past that she hasn't dealt with. I suspect that there's more reasons for the decisions that Branson makes then she's aware of and why she doesn't try to discover the reasons of who Branson really is and why he moved into the town at the same time when she moved. I suspect his promise to always keep her safe has a hidden meaning. I think each story has a mystery to solve with a hint of underlying , undercurrent of a bigger and more dangerous threat to her life. which I believe is connected to her father's death, and Branson is what stands between her and those who would do her harm. Perhaps the unpleasant Chief is part of that bigger picture & he has connections, whether positive or negative, or if he's just an unpleasant personality, like Officer Green... Paulie, the owner of one of the businesses in the small Colorado, has someone who has attempted to harm him and his real identity is no longer safe in this small tourist town. . These are pleasant mysteries without violence sex, and introduce a town that has its differences which are never greater than that which bonds them, which is a pursuit of truth and a genuine caring for all their friends and neighbors. This story is the first to hint that Fred's father's death was part of a bigger story and a realization that there may have individuals in that sleepy little, peaceful town who are watching her closer than she realizes. Paulie hints to this at the end of the story but she's doesn't grasp the realization or possibilities that he may not be the only one who knows that there are others who are tracking her and have the intention of blocking her should she come too close to the truth of the cases her father was working on at the time of his death. . This story is interesting from the beginning to the end, but it's only at the end where I came to the realization that there's much more about this peaceful little Tourist town than she realizes. Branson and Paulie allude to the undercurrent, but she's still too much in the past to realize the present danger that she's placing herself in every time she investigates another murder, because someone is watching and if she gets to close to them, she and her mother may be in danger. It may be the reason her mother remarried so soon after her father's death. There's a lot of subtle clues that make me wonder if there's not another mystery behind the mysteries as she settles into her new life. Hopefully she'll learn to leave the past behind and see the present so she can have a future.
AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall 4 Narration 5 Story 4
Winifred (Fred) and her companion Winston are happy to celebrate the 4th of July, bringing together friends of two and four-legged variety to enjoy the holiday. Owner of the Cozy Corgi Bookshop and Bakery, Fred is solidly settled into her life in Estes Park, with several friends, a boyfriend-ish relationship and the amusement provided by Winston. And then her friend Paulie is left for dead in his pet store, while a customer is murdered Fred’s curiosity is piqued and Paulie’s two chaotic corgis, Flotsam and Jetsam only add to the story with their wild ways and almost untenable exuberance. And, while Fred is dating a police officer, the uncomfortable questions that serve to stir the pot, and they see it as interference and unwelcome at that
Aside from the lovely inclusions of the dogs – as corgis are little fur-dropping, stubborn, I can do anything and will, full of personality and attitude moments, the quiet Winston being almost undone with the antics of his unwanted houseguests, the story had so much depth and so many twists that the mystery didn’t actually resolve itself in any coherent way, until the big reveal. Cleverly plotted with twists that I didn’t see coming, the story mixed humor, information and a bunch of twists to keep me guessing until the end. Fred is a determined and often single-minded woman, not afraid of ruffling feathers in her quest for the truth, and her connection with Winston, including her humor and willingness to connect with Flotsam and Jetsam was lovely to read. Sure to be a series on my “I must read these” list.
Narration for this story was provided by Angie Hickman, the second time I’ve had the opportunity to listen to her work. Her narration and presentation of the story was near-perfect, with voices, modulation in tone and delivery, and the ability to clearly present the twists, turns and revelations without seeming to give the story and it’s conclusion away. While she doesn’t allow the story to overtake her performance, she did allow the story to come forward and unfold in ways that both added to the engagement and entertainment of the listen. I’ll most certainly be seeking out more of her work.
I received an audiobook copy of the title from Tantor Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
CHAOTIC CORGIS opens with Estes Park in the height of summer tourist season. The beautiful mountain town, which Fred and Watson have adopted as their home is bursting with shoppers, ice cream eaters, and of course filled with the friends they have made in the past nine months. Some are a part of their daily lives like Katie in the Cozy Corgi bakery, always ready with a stash of natural dog bone treats for Watson and an irresistible selection of pastries for Fred. Leo Lopez the handsome forest ranger, Paulie Mertz the sweet and shy pet shop owner, Athena Rose the obituary writer for the Chipmunk Chronicles, as well as, Fred’s colorful and unique group of family members. Much to Watson’s annoyance are Flotsam and Jetsam, Paulie’s two Corgis who are overly effusive in their attraction to the grumpy little man. Life is good in Estes Park, so very, very good. On her way to purchase a 4th of July hat for Watson, Fred is shocked to see the shy pet shop owner kissing a stunning blond woman, luckily it is a grateful customer who has just purchased a huge 15-foot cat entertainment center for her seven cats. Fred meets the buyer Melody and pet hair solutions are compared as they chat. Contemplating the cat hair of seven cats, Fred is content with Watson’s flying fur. Once again, Fred and Watson find an Estes Park resident brutally murdered and the sweet Paulie in a pool of blood and clinging to life. Despite the aggravation to both human and resident Corgi, Fred’s good heart prevails as she takes Flotsam and Jetsam home with her while Paulie is in the hospital. Strangely Fred’s occasional date, the ultra-handsome Detective Branson Wexler cautions her without humor to not meddle in this investigation and let the police do their job. This is delivered without humor and ‘consequences’ are suggested if she does not follow his order. This is both hurtful and infuriating to Fred who vows to solve the murder and the attack on Pauli in record time. Thus, begins the most trying and puzzling Cozy Corgi mystery yet. Nothing seems clear, hints are offered, which may or may not be helpful. At this point, there is no possible way to put the book down even for fresh dirty Chai. CHAOTIC CORGIS is a satisfying and fascinating addition to the series. The book closes on a personal and very poignant note from Mildred Abbott.
I just loved this book. I have enjoyed a few of the Corgi mysteries on audio book and when I was looking for something to read and discovered I had this book in my to be read pile I started straight away, who knows why I waited so long? I really enjoyed it and want be making that mistake again. This is book six in the series but each book has been a stand alone story so you don't need to have read them to enjoy them but it is just a cute fun series that I don't know why you wouldn't work your way through them. I really like the characters and most of the are regulars though out the series but it is the added bonus of the dogs that really makes the series so much fun, I think everyone knows a dog simular to Watson at some point in there life. The mystery was good and I liked the way the plot unfolded to reveal what happened. Off to see if I have any more books by this author hidden on my device or In my audio collection. Fred (Winifred) is full of hope for what the future brings after celebrating the four of July. That is the only reason she would even consider dressing her dog Watson up in fancy dress in order to take some photos for her Corgi themed book shop but her plans run aground when she finds her friend laying unconscious at the back of his pet shop and the body of the newest residence of Estes. With her friend fighting for his life and Fred's cop boyfriend telling her to stay out of it she knows what she has to do and it is not just take home his precious and badly behaved corgis. Who was the real target? As she investigates Fred can find lots of reasons why each of the victims were attacked but no one person had a reason or motive to hurt both of them. Is she barking up the wrong tree? And should she for once do as she was told and stay out of it? Of course not Watson wouldn't dare allow her let a killer go free, even if it might uncover some secrets from the past.
I have become a corgi fan through reading this series and this book made me grateful I only have one dog. After Paulie is injured in an attempted murder, Fred finds herself agreeing to care for his two corgis. Add her own Watson and trying to solve a murder and the woman is pretty busy. And while Watson is well-trained (although at times resistant to obeying – he is one stubborn dog), Flotsam and Jetsam are a bit on the crazy side. So…chaotic times all around.
The murder Fred has to solve happened at the same time as Paulie’s attempted murder so there’s the question of who was the intended target and who was collateral damage? Because what are the odds of two different perpetrators attacking two different people at the same time and place, right?
There is more of Branson the handsome detective in this book and his slow burn with Fred faces some serious challenges – especially when he orders her not to investigate. Hello, can we say red flag in front of a bull? Fred does, of course, investigate. And along the way we meet even more members of the Estes community. Her family and friends are there to support her, even throwing in a Fourth of July celebration. Watson is also at her heels, although I commiserated with him when he was put in costumes. I know my dog wouldn’t tolerate it, so good on Watson for persevering with the craziness.
Angie Hickman returned to narrate this book, the sixth in the series, and I was grateful. Her Fred is pitch-perfect and she always has great voices for the other characters. Her narration is always steady and leads to a good and solid performance. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
Winifred "Fred" Page finds her friend, Paulie, injured in his shop and another woman dead. She is really concerned about her friend and sets out to figure who hurt him and who the killer is. She is having problems with her romantic life as Srgt. Wexler is very stern with her about staying out of the investigation. They had just started getting close and she is shocked and angered by his behavior. She manages to ruffle a lot of feathers during her investigation and it is understandable as she can be quite annoying when asking questions and accusing people of misdeeds. There are lots of suspects including the dead woman's husband who is allergic to cats and the woman had 7, the neighbor whose birds had been killed by the cats, potential blackmailers who the woman had caught having an affair and others. Fred is taking care of Paulie's corgis while he is in the hospital and they are quite a handful. She learns some people's secrets along the way and acknowledges some of her faults but charges on determined to solve the mystery. Sometimes I like Fred and sometimes I get frustrated with her as I don't like her pushiness at times. I like how the young twin boys, Nick and Ben, have helped out with the bakery and bookstore and how well they fit in and how good things have turned out for them. Some other interesting characters are introduced and a little more background on others is included. A quick read.
This next installment of Cozy Corgi Mysteries was amazing! While in the last installment I was able to guess whodunit pretty quick, this one threw me for a loop!
The more I read these books, the more I actually appreciate Fred. And don't get me wrong, she does actually annoy me sometimes! But I love how not perfect she is! She makes mistakes! She gets angry! It's so normal compared to a typical protag that is just perfect at everything. It's definitely what I love about her. The side characters were fantastic, as usual.
I personally was glad that she finally broke things off with Branson. As of right now, I can't visualize herself with anybody, even Leo, but I could tell this relationship wasn't right. Does that mean it won't be right later? Who knows! But I guess we'll find out
This book also opened the door for future stories into Fred's past. Not to mention Paulie's warning at the end, I'm looking forward to the next installments! I can't wait to see what happens next!
Random note, what the author wrote after the book ended about her dog Alastair. As a corgi owner myself, my dog is my soulmate and I can only imagine how she felt writing about Watson and Fred's relationship! She's right though, Alastair is going to live on in Watson and I hope that makes her feel a little better. You can look back and realize that even though he's not around constantly anymore, it's as if he never really left ❤️

Whether you have read the previous mysteries in this series or this is your introduction to Fred and Watson you will be quickly drawn into the descriptive beauty of Estes Park and the charm of the shops along main street. The assortment of characters that make up Fred's family and the quirky shop owners who all expect her to get involved in solving a crime against one of their own will keep you turning pages. This is a series for animal lovers and those who appreciate a none too simple cozy mystery.
Paulie has always been a little odd. He has trouble making friends, but has seemed to find a few ways to "belong" in Estes Park. He also has two corgis, the same breed as Watson. We soon discover that not all corgis have the same temperament. Birds and cats also play a role in this tale, as does some romantic turbulence.
Fred really wasn't planning to interfere with a police investigation, but when she was the one to discover the crime scene, and then was forcefully ordered NOT to snoop around, well, you can imagine how well she accepted that.
This series is more interesting now. I guess that's because the characters have been developed. It's rather . . . cozy.
Paulie is stabbed and a woman murdered at Paulie's pet store. But the crimes don't add up. Branson once again warns Fred from being involved. Fred disregards that advice. But she's off througout her "investigation".
It's interesting. I have finally figured out something about this series; it's slow. Not much action takes place. There's some visiting, a murder, some more visiting, and then the solution. I read another cozy immediately prior to this that was wall-t0-wall action. It stood in stark contrast to this series.
The mystery, and hence backstory, of Paulie was a fit far-fetched. The murder was understandable, but certainly different for this series. I rather like that.
I also think Fred is totally off-base with Branson. Perhaps it's because I am a guy, but I think his actions were totally understandable and that she is unrealistic in her expectations. It will be her loss. I also wonder how this will come through in future books in the series . . . and I guess that's why there's more for me to read. :)
It's summer and the tourists have flocked to Estes Park, Colorado. For the new bookshop and bakery, The Cozy Corgi, business is booming. Winifred (Fred) Page and her business partner, Katie are overwhelmed but luckily hired two twins to aid them in their stores.
Everything is wonderful, until, Fred and Watson happen upon a grisly scene at their local pet store. Life is now going to change in the small town. Was it a local or an out of towner that caused this crime? And, why?
As Fred and Watson start their own investigation, Fred is warned off by her boyfriend, Branson who is also the Homicide Detective for the Estes Police. Fred wonders at Branson's cold treatment of her and now there is an additional mystery for her to figure out...one of a personal level.
Watson, the Corgi, is an integral part of this series and this tale. His personality is strong, compassionate, and clever. If you love dogs, cats, birds, or other animals this series is for you to read. It's funny, a cozy, and a clever murder mystery series. Enjoy!
Chaotic Corgis (Cosy Corgi Mysteries book 6 Winifred Page, known as Fred is here again with Watson her fussy corgi whose circle of friends is growing. Ben who now also works in the bookshop has become one of Watson’s close buddies. Nick, Ben’s twin is working in the bakery upstairs with Katie and they are creating wondrously irresistible treats, keeping up with demand now that there are four hands baking. This is a book that will keep you guessing and trying to put the puzzle pieces together. Paulie’s pet shop Paws had me feeling quite anxious but you will have to buy and read Chaotic Corgis yourself to learn any more. Watson is a wise little gentleman as usual, knowing when Fred needs him by her side. I purchased this ebook from Amazon and will definitely read it again. This review is entirely my own.
Fantastic. A new couple who are cat mad move into their small community. When the wife is murdered and Paulie critically injured she starts looking into the case. Her hunky police officer tells her in no uncertain terms to butt out. Stunned by his attitude she resolves to keep looking. Was there a reason why the two were targeted? If so what was it? A brilliant plot that wove a great number of suspects and motives into the storyline. Whilst the characters are getting to be more like friends with each book. Will she ever find a soul mate on whom she can rely as much as she does on Watson? (Who is a wonderful character and loved the scenes where he displayed his top dog attitude. )
I love this corgi. The mystery is not one that you can guess, so that I really like. The main character really has some major anger issues and behaves toward the officer the way she hated her ex and best friend behaved. She likes Leo because he agrees with her. Maybe she should have become PI or a policeman instead of a bookstore owner. I am not sure that her father would agree with her behavior the way she acts toward everyone thinking she is superior to everyone including the police. Yes she solves the murders, but at what price. I feel more sorry for the officer than I do for her. If the relationship between her and her Corgi were different I'm not sure I could connect with the series.
While I have enjoyed this series and the murderous adventures of Fred and Watson, I feel like this book has slowed in development of the characters - in particular, Fred. I had hoped she would gain a little more 'mature' approach to being told to back down to the investigation of the murders. Instead, she pushes forward. Ultimately, it's a good thing because she's a lot quicker than the police force can be; but, it is too pushy for my liking. Watson's personality, even as a dog, continues to give me the laugh I always need. Fred takes in Paulie's corgis -- which adds to the fun. I have to admit, I teared up about Mildred Abbott's corgi's passing.
I received a complimentary copy for reviewing purposes. All opinions are 100% my own.
My daughter gave me this book because I love corgis and cozy mysteries. We had a snow day today from school and after I gave the dog two walks and did some advance cooking for the week I snuggled with our dorgi (half corgi half dachshund) and did not get out of the chair until I finished it! It was a little challenging to keep everyone straight at first because there are clearly many books that came before this one. But I came to care for the characters quickly and the ending completely surprised me and made me look forward to reading more books in the series. I especially appreciated how Fred, the main character, stood up for her self respect and is a strong, independent woman. And of course, I adored the portrayal of Watson, a corgi who embodies loyalty and strength of character.
It’s summer in Estes Park and both Fred and Katie have hired extra help, twin brothers no less, to help handle the crowds of tourists in the a Cozy Corgi bookshop and bakery. Then Fred discovers a double murder - wait, make that a murder and murder attempt! But who was the original victim and who just got in the way? Fred is intrigued but is told in no uncertain terms by Sergeant Branson Wexler that she needs to leave the investigating of this case to the police! Of course, that just adds to her determination to investigate. Add taking care of Pauli’s two hyper corgis and things get chaotic indeed! Fred and Watson are having a tough time figuring out this convoluted mystery. Will they be able to solve it this time?
Another fun entry in this series, even with Watson being his usual cantankerous self :) I'm still waffling about Fred, though - she's an inconsistent character and is frequently absent from her bookstore, although at least there's now an employee to cover her absence.
I didn't care much for the murder victim, and it seems there were quite a few characters in the story who didn't either. I thought I had it worked out early, but as the investigation continued, I realized that wasn't true. I did figure it out before it was revealed in the book, though, so I count that as a win :)
The next book from this series is in my audio library, and I hope to listen to it in the relatively near future.
