Dark Enchantments #4

Saving Destiny

Rate this book
In exchange for his brother's release from imprisonment, Ash Demon Kadenshar is blackmailed into saving Destiny Rue, the supposed Crystal Goddess who is being hunted by dark forces. It is said the Goddess will bring balance and peace to the dark and mortal realms, but there are other stories as well, stories of the Crystal Goddess destroying his kind.

Destiny Rue has always feared the family curse: insanity. So when she meets handsome businessman Kade Sharpe she attributes the vivid fantasies, and worse yet voices, to the onset of her dreaded family legacy. Then Kade shares a tale about an Ash Demon Warrior blackmailed into saving the Crystal Goddess, a healer of legend who could destroy his kind. Suddenly, everything Destiny has believed about her life is shattered.

The formerly fragile Destiny considers the magnitude of her legacy. If she IS the Crystal Healer, how will she chose between the life of the man who's changed her entire world and the balance between good and evil?

4 ½ Stars! ~ The hallucinations and voices that torment her mind create a living nightmare for Destiny Rue. It was predicted that her mother’s insanity would claim her too before she turned 30, and Dee’s darkest fears seemed to be coming true. Especially when she meets businessman Kade Sharpe and strange things begin to happen; things that only an insane person would believe in. Kade is an Ash Demon Warrior. His race had been created from the ashes of Nero’s burning. They are the most highly evolved of the demon world being part mortal. Kade is in the mortal realm to save his brother who was wounded by the P-Cell demon hunters and then saved by the Cadre specialists in a crystal. The Cadre demand that Kade help them bring Destiny to their sanctuary where they will teach her that she is the Crystal Goddess, the great healer. Once Dee reaches her potential, she will have the healing powers like no other, and will be able to heal Kade’s brother while he’s captured within the Cadre’s crystal. Kade has made his own pact with the demon world, that once his brother is healed and released he will turn over Destiny to the dark realm. The more time he spends with Des the stronger their bond. And what of the prophesy, that the Crystal Goddess will collaborate and mate with a great Ash Warrior and balance and peace will come to both realms; the dark and the mortal.

Another awesome read! I couldn’t put this one down! I love Pat White’s tortured hero; though from the dark realm he strived always for honour and integrity. Destiny seemed very weak at the beginning of the book; I loved how she evolved and grew in confidence and self-awareness. Though not as spicy as the others in this series, there a few really hot scenes. This was a very good read, about healing and forgiveness, and love and honour, and of course that on going battle of good over evil. I do so hope there will be other stories to come in the Dark Enchantment series.

A quick, easy read--less than 300 pages. For being a Harlequin Romance book, it seemed to lack the love/sex scenes that other books have. It was a little slow to start, but good nonetheless. There didn't seem to be as much suspense as I thought there would be, it was mostly inner turmoil from Destiny and Kadenshar, and I'm used to Harlequin books with a paranormal storyline having adventure and suspense--getting chased, fight scenes, etc. In this respect I was slightly disappointed.

At the beginning, Destiny seems weak and it's hard to root for her as our heroine. No one likes to read about weak women that can hardly take care of themselves. But after Kadenshar shows up and we start seeing the connection between them, we see Destiny get stronger, more confident, and assertive. She becomes a woman we can like and hope to emulate.

Overall, the book was good. It was a quick read, worth spending a couple days on. If you like romance novels, then I'd recommend it and say go ahead and put it on your To Read List. I would have given it four stars, except the excitement level was kind of low.

Overall, I'm not sorry that I read Saving Destiny. It was the first paranormal I've read that portrayed a demon as a hero, and that it did very well. By the end of the story I was fully infatuated with Kade, who (all flaws aside) is a well written character. He has depth and personality. He has multiple motivations guiding his actions, and the motivations are pulling him in completely opposite directions. This is what makes me more forgiving of his internal dialogue and self-doubts than Dee's. He seems real, where Dee is more a cardboard cutout of what a heroine should be.

This is apparently a later book in a series. It wasn't clear how many previous books belong to this series, how far down the line this one falls, but it really shouldn't be read alone. I found it tough to follow the story line, which involves some kind of demon and a heroine who is either the doom of the demons or the savior of them. It wasn't clear which--and it's possible that she might be both, depending on her choices. I found this story confusing and unfortunately forgettable. I have not been impressed by many of the Nocturne books, much as I have wanted to like them.

It's been a long time since I've read "series" romances. This is a good book, but I felt like important parts of the story were left out to meet a word count maximum. There were several things that I wanted more information on (such as what being a "Crystal Goddess" entailed and what all Destiny could do once she obtained her full powers), and the ending just didn't satisfy me.

This is a story about a witch who does not know about her talents and thinks that she is going insane. An Ash Demon has been sent to get her and bring to his people. But legends say that the Crystal Healer and the Ash Demon will unite to balance the world of good and evil.

I read most of it but didn't care enough about the characters to finish it. No spark for me.
