When Lexi wakes up in the Hudson Medical Center, barely in one piece, she is unable to recall how she got there.

Nobody seems to be able to tell her.

Disturbing memories haunt her daylight hours. Nightmares stalk her sleep.
With huge unanswered questions, like where is her Mom - why doesn't she visit? What's happened to her boyfriend Finn - and who is this friend, Crystal, who visits her a lot and of whom she has no recollection? Lexi sets out to discover what's happened.

But the more she searches for answers, the deeper and darker the mystery gets.

And as she begins to piece the fragments together, she remembers one thing: I MUST HIDE FROM CHARLIE.

But the question is: who is Charlie? And is he still out there?

Trigger warnings: SO VERY MUCH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OMG. Also child abuse, lying, fire, car accident, stalking, bullying,

Meh. This was a fast paced story, but I'm also not quite sure who the intended audience is for this book. Like...it's not a book that's designed to teach teens about what an abusive relationship looks like because it just hurls you into the worst parts of it. The teen drama is beyond ridiculous (), and the writing was preeeeeetty average to be honest.

In short, the blurb sounded great but this was decidedly average.

You Can't Hide is a bit of a mish mash, utterly readable, fast paced and twisted.

The central theme is that of domestic violence- the kind that is seemingly inescapable. With a hidden plan, pulled off, one girl and her mother escape- but have to stay hidden. However an unsettling series of events leads to tragedy...

The story is told from the point of view of Lexi, from her hospital bed, where her memory is fractured and her ability to recognise people is erratic. Also told in flashback as memories return, there are lots of twists and turns.

I thought the domestic violence theme was really well done - the terror both during and after, the harsh truth that getting out doesn't necessarily mean safety, the author captures that perfectly.

However I found Lexi to be most terribly irritating which did take away from some of the drama unfolding for this reader.

Her actions were not terribly believable when it came to her insta love and her school life - however that was interspersed with more realistic issues she had on trust and anxiety.

Like I say a bit of a mish mash, overall very good with a few annoyances that subjectively speaking brought it down a notch.

Recommended if you adore a good unreliable narrator.

⚠️This review contains spoilers so if you plan to read this (which you shouldn’t) don’t read this⚠️
You can’t hide is a story about Lexi and her mum who are running from her abusive stepfather. She knows there was an accident and she knows he was after them but she can’t remember. You can run but you can’t hide.

This book was hideous. The abuse was unnerving and made me incredibly uncomfortable. Her stepfather was mad and her mother was too. Her mother was on sleeping tablets and kept telling her to run…as if she has anywhere to run to.
They do however escape and go live with a caring woman, Auntie Gillian. For some bizarre reason Lexi doesn’t like Gillian much and I cannot understand why. Gillian is a genuinely nice person!
They move away with a new identity and Lexi makes a few new friends and a few new enemies. Jules and the dogettes (how original 🙄) can’t stand Lexi because she’s so nice and so cool and so pretty and blah, blah, blah. Anyway, she manages to steal the coolest dogette’s boyfriend from under her epic sniffer nose by lying that she saves him from a fire. How is that even okay?! She also does black magic that constantly saves her throughout the book. Black magic is mambo jumbo. And if you’ve never done black magic how will it work the first time after you found a recipe of GOOGLE!!?
All it takes is one black magic spell people. Promise to avenge the dead and it will save you from multiple events.
Afterwards Jules takes an explicit video of Finn and Lexi (that I’ld rather not explain 🤢) and threatens Lexi with it. Lexi is forced to give over her beautiful boyfriend and becomes Jules’s slave (how tragic 🙄). She does everything for Jules and has to hang around with her crowd even though they mock poor little Lexi. However she still sneaks around and make art (eeeewwww) with her boyfriend (I’ld also rather not explain that).
Anyway, in the end Charlie finds them and she attacks Jules and it all becomes very dramatic. The characters in this novel were awful, Lexi was appalling, Jules was a monster and a typic mean girl who did unrealistic things for a girl of that age, Finn was DISGUSTING and an absolute creep but I guess Lexi spurred him on and gave him ridiculous ideas.
The whole Jules-Crystal thing was so annoying AND YES everyone gets their happily ever after AND YES Lexi gets justice AND YES Jules gets what she deserves La Di Da Da.

I’m lucky I bought this book at a sale so I can’t say I wasted money but it did waste my time. I DNFed this and came back but I regret it so badly. This book is such an awful read and was so disappointing. Remember kids, don’t fall in love with the coolest girl’s boyfriend and don’t throw yourself on the train tracks and try to die.

Such a good read that kept me on my toes from beginning to end. Skillfully plotted and weaving in themes of coercive control, domestic abuse, peer pressure, bullying and more. A great and believable (if you get my drift) unreliable narrator.
I loved the way the narrative unfolded with flashbacks to significant past events in the distant past and in the near past. It served to build the intrigue and made me turn the pages faster. Read in one sitting.

Very gripping, twisted and haunting novel. Missing explores the theme of domestic abuse through the use of the character ‘Charlie’. The book follows the the thoughts of the protagonist, Lexi, whose thoughts and memories unfold over the course of the novel building suspense and tension. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it to anybody who loves thriller novels!

You’re probably thinking that because I finished this book in a couple of hours, I enjoyed it.
I DID NOT. THIS MIGHT BE THE WORST BOOK I READ THIS YEAR!

Lexi needs to remember. There is a trial coming up and her evidence is all they need to prove her abusive stepfather guilty. But the more Lexi uncovers, the more she realises that you can’t hide.

Okay, I appreciate the fact that there a protagonist who has an abusive parent because this kind of stuff is rife in our world and it need to be addressed and YES Sarah Mussi did a pretty good job with that but that’s probably the only good thing about this book.

Lexi is annoying and whiny. She is kind of insufferable. The book also features my least favourite trope insta-love.
There is also the fact that Lexi stole someone’s boyfriend and she can’t be bothered about the other girl’s feelings because all she wants is the guy and she will get him no matter what.

There is a lot of cat fighting and bullying between Lexi and the antagonist in this book. It was also really horrible and it was irritating. The love interest is boring and one dimensional and I couldn’t stand him.

The book is also about ‘art’. Lexi and Finn create a lot of disturbing ‘art’ recreating Michelangelo paintings in real life and taking pictures of each other and then drawing these very disturbing pictures. At the end she finds out it was illegal and I honestly found that unnecessary and as I mentioned DISTURBING.

The end was an absolute disaster.

There was also mention of black magic and she prays to some dead ‘sister’ A.K.A. Witches who were hung once upon a time. I also hate the constant time jumping. It annoyed me.

My suggestion is that if this book is not already in your possession don’t waste your possession, DO NOT READ IT. 💕

In this book, Lexi escapes her old life with her mum to get away from her mum's abusive boyfriend Charlie.

Following their life, she wakes up in hospital to her aunties and no mum in sight and no recollection of her memories of what happened.

We discover she was in love with a boy called Finn after she stole him away from his old girlfriend Jules using a spell as she believes she's a witch.

When Jules gets dumped by Finn she vows revenge and plots and pushes our star couple to land themselves in trouble in the name of a rather revealing art project for school fueled by Jules's jealousy.

It was a bit odd with the witch reference and not heavily used just hinted at a few times to be honest it could've been left out and been an amazing book about the dangers of girls over jealousy and envy of what someone else has like a boyfriend they fancy.

Charles wasn't mentioned a great deal just the odd account from him interspersed every so often and t could've been made better in my opinion as I found the culmination a bit of a let down and not what I hoped for at all. Jules was a devious character who made the drama for sure what it became but ultimately she was in a position to do more and just didn't hit the mark for me.

Thriller with an amnesaic narrator. I found the spell-casting rather unconvincing and think the book would have been stronger without it, but the abusive step-dad was scary and menacing and the threat of his reappearance kept me reading. If you liked The One Memory of Flora Banks, you might enjoy this.

Our first encounter with Lexi seems to be a memory of her experiencing domestic abuse at the hands of her stepfather. There seems to be no doubt that something very unpleasant is going on. Then we learn Lexi is in hospital.
We don’t know what’s happening, but Lexi is visited by her aunt Gillian and her friend Crystal. Each is urging her to remember, but she can’t tell what they want her to remember.
All Lexi can think of is her mother and Finn. Neither visits her, and she doesn’t understand why.
Through a mix of memories we learn more about Lexi, some of the events that have happened to her and - eventually - how she came to be where she is.
This was a quick read, and it could certainly raise awareness of a number of issues, but so much of it seemed unbelievable and I find it hard to believe someone of Lexi’s age wouldn’t have more of an awareness of these issues before acting.

This was completely enthralling from the first page. The secrets, the loss of memory, the things that Lexi won't write because she's so worried about being found by Charlie? All of these added up to a great mystery.

As the story unfolded, it grew darker. The pressure on her to go along with the bullying because she's so scared of Charlie finding them and hurting her and her mum. It makes it different from the typical bullying story, because if Lexi doesn't do what Finn's girlfriend says then a video of her will be posted on the internet and Charlie will know where to find her.

I did have to wonder about some of the things Lexi did though. I mean she stood outside the school completely naked? And no teachers came out to tell her off? It seems pretty unlikely that no teachers saw her or at least heard the buzz from the other students and came out to find out what was going on.

Still, it was a really great plot and I loved the ending.

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!
At first I thought that she was in hospital in the beginning because of her abusive stepfather but the true reason is so shocking.
Also CRYSTAL?! I was always a wary about her for some reason but I never expected her to be Jules! And to believe that in the beginning I felt a bit sorry for her?!
And Finn. I feel as though as Lexi fell in love with him, I did too. He’s everyone’s dream and that makes his death so much more painful.
I recommend this book to anyone and everyone! You have to read it.

What an addictive book! Not a light read though as it featured a lot of domestic violence. The author told the story in a way that made you feel scared, surprised and frustrated. I loved this book however it did get a bit confusing with the flipping back and forth of the storyline. I would recommend it for people aged 15 years and up, with the rare 14 year old.

Challenging & disturbing themes are skilfully woven through this twisty thriller that makes the reader feel as disorientated as the protagonist at times. Suspension of disbelief is occasionally required but overall it's a gripping read with great teen appeal.

Massive TW for domestic abuse. I'm usually able to disconnect from it, but this book was so soaked in domestic violence it triggered my PTSD almost non-stop for hours. But while this book was awful and painful, it was also brilliantly written and beautiful. And I quite loved it, even if I hated it.

The book starts off quite slow paced, but after 100 pages or so it becomes very quick to read. The structure of the book takes getting used to but the main character has a personality that makes you want to read on. Overall, a great read.

TW- abuse
You can't hide is a YA thriller told from our main protagonist Lexi's POV, she wakes up in a treatment centre, barely able to move and certainly unable to remember why she's even there, all she knows is that herself and her mother fled from England to America to escape her mum's abusive boyfriend, but everything from then on is a blur. We follow Lexi's road to recovery with the help of her aunt Gillian and her friend Crystal and her desperate attempts to piece together the mystery that is her life.

I found that basically almost every character in this book was either VERY immature or crazy! Or in our main protagonist's case, a bit of both! Every decision lexi seemed to make had a strange, angering effect on me, not only was there a weird over the top instalove with someone she maybe spoke too 5 times for all of 10 minutes before she was "madly in love with him" but she kept continuously putting herself and her mother in danger to carry on being with this person, I don't know I just think she had a very unhealthy obsession and it was just weird, and selfish.

Faults aside, I do still think that the premise of the book is great, if it was written slightly better and maybe more time was spent on the overall plot and character built up then I could 100% see myself enjoying it!

Thank you to Netgalley for sending me an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review, I gave this book 1.5 stars

I am 78% of the way through this as an audiobook and I an beyond annoyed and fustrated. Lexie has to be one of the most unreliable characters I have ever read about. Reading this book was like watching a horror movie and yelling at the screen, "do not go in there".

Lexi is constantly making plans but never follows through with anything. Then, what is up with Jules? She is a mean girl on steroids! How can she manage to control and manipulate so many people and yet never seems to be punished for it. What a joke!

Emily Lawrence is an amazing narrator as she is able to bring all the characters to life. She makes every character so unique. I would absolutely listen to another book she has narrated.

Update: finished the book.... still not worth it... there is so much wrong with the society in which these characters live.

I normally feel like books with accidents surrounding memory loss are either hit or miss. This one was a hit for me. I genuinely could not see what was going to happen and there were elements of this that weren't clear if it was in Lexi's head or if it was actually happening. The combining of the plot surrounding the bullying and Lexi's stepfather was done very well. One element I did find confusing was when Lexi started referring to her mum as mom and it was only in the next page the reason why became clear. It's an interesting read that delivered a good twist that i did not see coming.

Ohhh, I do love an unreliable narrator and Lexi certainly did a great job of immediately capturing my attention.
How Lexi ended up in hospital with a broken memory is told through flashbacks and with each one comes revelations...
it’s up to the reader to decide what is (or was) real and what is a product of Lexi’s imagination.

Clever, exciting and says “Netflix adaptation” to me!

Thank you to Netgalley for the chance to read this, I’ve read a few of Sarah’s other books and whole heartedly recommend them all for fans of Non Pratt and Holly Bourne.

Sarah Mussi’s YA psychological thriller convinces on the emotional effects of domestic abuse on victims but is hamstrung by a deeply silly plot that sees Lexi make ridiculous decisions for unconvincing reasons, plot twists that are too easy to guess and two-dimensional antagonists. This is a shame because Mussi tries to deal with the serious themes of abusive relationships, bullying and sexting but the plotting lets the themes down.

Okay I promise I'm not a jerk. But DNF number 2 of the day. I just can't handle the type of abuse and such. I wish there was a bit more context before I listened at the back of the book.

There was no warnings, also the description of the book gives you no context to the book. It's very pick me grabby descriptions. Very click bait.

It’s a no from me. I despised the FMC and I think we’re supposed to actually like her? Idk. I think she’s supposed to be a sympathetic character but she outright states she’s trying to use the same tactics as her abuser.
And the “black magic” bits are just weird.
Also…the twist at the end was no twist…it was super obvious.

The teen drama contained in the book plot was somewhat absurd and I feel the constant jumping between timelines confused me at times. Not a fan either of the formatting, I don’t think the varieties of names of colours in the chapters headings were effective or significant to my reading. The MC’s point of view was also sometimes redundant, like I get it she couldn’t remember shit but can the description be more different in other pages. Nevertheless the book was definitely a thrilling one, with the amount of angst going on, just quite a bit problematic to determine whether it’s good, maybe just not bad.

TW: Domestic abuse, bullying

I thought this book was very fast-paced, with elements such as domestic abuse being very evident from her uncle. The book features 'Lexi' a girl who has run away because of her abusive uncle. It wasn't really my cup of tea.

The writing was confusing because of the back and forth of present vs past vs her memories of the accident. The dialogue between Finn and Lexi was so cringy. I almost DNF this one but by the time I made that decision I was almost 60% in so I figured I’d just suck it up and finish it.

Interesting use of an untrustworthy narrator. However, I hated all of the characters and was not emotionally attached to any of them. The final final twist, I honestly didn't see coming, but that could have been lack of caring at that point on my part.
