Rate this book
When life gives you lemons, punch it in the face.

Time is running out for Wila and Azren as the meeting with the dragon liege looms, and Wila is no closer to locating the rogue Shedim base. Death by dragon seems like a definite possibility according to the voice in the basement.

With the Lost loose in the city, and the arcana Institute twiddling their thumbs, it’s up to Wila and Co to clean up the mess, prevent general panic and make sure they get home in time for a proper cup of tea.

Add several mechanical monster’s hell bent on attacking civilians into the mix, and we have a recipe for a case that’s out of this world. But with her jade-eyed shedim partner, an Arcana royalty, a draconi prince, and her troll blood lover at her back, no foe is unbeatable…right?

It’s going to take several slices of lemon cake for the gang to get through the week, but Wila has a plan.

Unfortunately plans have a way of derailing themselves where the dragon liege is involved. Wila is about to be tested, and when the lights go out how loud will she scream?

Wila may be striding into the dragon’s den, but will she be striding back out?

Join Wila as she continues to kick butt, turn heads and unravel mysteries in the thrilling second installment of the Chronicles of Arcana.

I honestly had a really hard time getting through it, because whenever I put it down, I was super unmotivated to pick it back up.

It's not a bad book, but was just ... a lot of nothing. I felt like the lead female's inner monologue was nearly always some massively repetitive dithering about how she can't commit to one guy but oh these damn feelings, why are they so strong, she just can't resist what's wrong with her omg why does she react like this to thisguyshecannevercommittoanyoneomgomgomg.

It was tedious.

And while there was plot, it feels like that only took up about 10% of the novel. And now we're 2 books in, we've made no progress in understanding who she is, who the random dude locked up in the basement is, ... and now we've got, like, space robot spiders? That somehow want her DNA?

I don't know. It just felt like a hot mess.

Won't be reading onwards.

A kick-ass Urban Fantasy with a slow burn Reverse Harem romance is the perfect way to describe this series.

3.5 stars

Wila and her team of hotties are trying to clean up the mess the Lost are making in the city. The plans to find the rouge Shedim are falling to the wayside with bigger problems coming to light. With the threat of an angry Dragon Queen over their heads its not looking good for Wila and time is running out.

This is action packed from start to finish and even though it had its problems I wasn't able to put it down. From 60% onward it really takes a darker turn and things start to happen quickly.
Sexual tensions are at an all time high between Wila and the 4 prominent men in her life. I was glad to see the harem taking shape I did wonder who was making the cut

The slow burn was really frustrating for me and things with Taylem especially.

"Why was I attracted to the guys who were off limits? And why was the attraction always that little bit too intense?"

If the Lost and the Shedim weren't a big enough problem for Wila then the introduction of some mechanical spiders will fill up any free time she had.
I'm going to have to trust Debbie knows where this is heading and what the spiders have to do with anything because that part left me a little confused. There are a lot of extra secondary characters in this and I'm not convinced they have any big part to play. The Hound is another stray Wila has picked up and apart form saving her life I don't see where it is heading.

Azren is still the main focus and therefore my favourite. Maybe we'll see the rest get their moment in the spotlight in future.

Big developments in the last 20% have me hyped up and ready for the next already

ARC received in exchange for an honest review - thank you!

So here we carry on with the story of Wilomena Bastion, who's still in a contract with Elora the Draconi queen to get rid of some rogue Shedim. Wila has to survive attacks by random fantastical beasts, all the while trying to discharge this debt. Meanwhile there are weird vaguely sexual encounters with the members of her developing harem - Valance, Azrem, and Tay.

Unfortunately this book was a cut below the last one. There was less humour, less plot progression, less relationship development, just... less everything. The random new attacks felt somewhat under-explained. How Cassidy writes is always excellent; what she was writing felt a bit rushed and filler-y. Nothing really seemed to happen. I get that this is typical second-hand syndrome, and it wasn't like it was a BAD book. I have every expectation that things will pick up in the sequel.

This book was like this:

But make no mistake, I loved every minute of it!

There are so, oh so many things happening here. We are tackled left, right and center with stuff. I will admit it is a bit frustrating, just a little bit though, cause small pieces to the puzzle are revealed and boom, something else hits us so we need to focus there.

Also the Blue Balls is STRONG in this one! I was like

The whole book. Damn! Willa, gurl, you know I lurve you, but The Voice In The Basement is right: damn you need to get laid! Get to it asap!

Also I wish for moar Valance! I ship him so much. Azren too. Even Noir. Not Tay though, he is not suited for Willa imo.

I just died laughing! OMG!

Ouuuu can't wait to see what happens! I am so ready for shit to go boom!

Still loving the main character, hating Elora, and seeing bonds with all the guys. Not much happens intimacy wise but slow burn works well with this storyline. I'm actually ready for Wila to get MORE power suddenly because she really needs it - annoyed the guys keep getting grabbed and she can't do anything about it, and that Elora is so super powerful her hands are tied. Argh! That's one villain I definitely loathe and hope she's destroyed in the next book.

This book was thoroughly entertaining. The FMC is nothing short of hilarious. I can't even with her. I was literally rolling during some parts of this. Plot wise this book is all over the place and yet I still enjoyed it soo much.

Where do I even start. This is a slow burn, I believe the description says "Whychoose" romance. I like that play on words. As if we don't already have enough supernatural creatures to deal with here with hardly any backstory the author decides to throw in so aliens too. Cause why the heck not right. I was so thrown by this. The aliens weren't just thrown in, there seems to be a whole backstory and thought in process here. Is this a spinoff perhaps? I'm not really sure it just seemed we barely skimmed the surface. I really have no clue where this is going, just when I think we have a direction it gets blown away.

I love the FMC sooo much! Shes just so simple and like one of the dudes. What is she exactly? And what the heck is shut up in the basement and why hasn't she tried harder to know. I feel like this is going to be super important in books to come but then again who knows lol. I cant wait to continue this series as soon as the next book comes out.

*review for first three books in series (no spoilers though)*

I just binge-read the three released books in this series, with one more to come on Nov. 27th.

Cassidy presents a kickass, brave heroine, with a slowburn reverse harem romance, an intriguing world, and a mystery of a plot to unravel. I love all of the characters, and I think that Cassidy always does a good job of making you feel connected to them and pulled into their stories. That said, I want to know more about what makes them all tick. Besides the characters, the plot of this series (especially in the third book) is very intriguing and exciting. It's action packed and the romance grows throughout the series.

I've also read Cassidy's Chronicles of Midnight series, and I have to say that I am enjoying this series way more. The characters and plot here are very well done, especially the plot. It's much tighter and well-spun here, with minimal mistakes, whereas that series had some larger plot holes and confusing things happening. This series is also funnier, and I think that Wila is more relatable than Serenity was. I think that the CoA series could use a little bit more world building, but I am overall loving it!

Secrets are resurfacing, and the level of danger is increasing exponentially..
Wila is bound by the contract with Elora, the dragon liege, to find the rogue Shedim, but her job gets much more complicated than she expected. Being attacked several times by mysterious metal creatures, Wila´s hunt for answers becomes fight for survival. Add the crazy vamps, raging hormones, terrifying Hound, and Wila´s legacy starting to manifest - and you have this explosion of sensations at your fingertips.
I absolutely loved this book. Couldn´t wait long enough to continue after finishing book one, and now I am impatient for the next installment to come my way. This series is highly addictive, full of action, tension, and surprises, with fast-pacing plot and character development and great balance between storyline and relationships / personal issues. The way the book is written is brilliant, with enough details to build a complex world but not too much to divert the attention, and Wila´s language fits the kick-ass heroine I fell in love with. I can easily understand her and identify myself with her, and I love the way her personality is portrayed. The same holds for the rest of the characters in this series. I am totally fascinated and excited to continue!

I liked this installment. I feel like the books are very short, and I'm glad I don't have to wait for a release, because the way they cut off as soon as a plan of action is determined is frustrating. It seems like there's a big reveal (or hint of a reveal) and then the books end.

This is a slow-burn RH. The romances are laid out pretty clearly, so you know the direction that things will eventually go, but they haven't gone there yet, even after book two. Lots of unresolved sexual tension going on.

Really good

This one had an emotional kick to it. Definitely more action in this one. Though I still don’t understand everything thats happening, I like where it’s going, aside with how this one ended. I have a ton of suspicions I can’t wait to see if what I think will happen does.

Ack, I honestly don't know what to think about this read. On one hand, I still love its urban fantasy element. It's not a secret that lately I have been hoarding lots of UF reads, albeit reverse-harem urban fantasy reads only, but def lots of them. However, I get so worked up with this particular author's characters, the tension crackling between them. UGH, them and their brand of frustration. I feel like it will take me to the peak but rather brings me to a plateau. (Is this the part where I say just let me come already? *snorts*) I swear I get so affected but still, I keep coming back for more. It's like an addiction or a vice - very unhealthy to my mind ffs. So yeah, imagine my predicament (ish) here...

Plot-wise, I believe nothing much happened. As a reader, I think there's a wild goose chase thing going on because I feel like I should have caught up already, that I knew something at the back of my mind, but for the life of me I can't pull the memory out. Or something like that. There is, indeed, a development near the end of the book...more like a character development for the heroine; the beginning of unraveling what/who she really might be. And I'm a tad angry toward Azren and Valance - I think most of my frustrations came from them. And it's rather a little frustrating, again, that I still feel like Adam and Tay are strangers. I do have to remind myself this is just book 2, though. Hopefully, the next installment will give me more answers and less frustration lmao.

PS Can someone kill Elora already? Tyvm!

I was a big fan of Chronicles of Midnight, but this series has already topped that one for me.

Willa is such a fantastic character and is a perfect blend of kick ass, but sensible. She doesn't go off half cocked (well hardly ever) and isn't afraid to ask for help when needed.

What I love the most about the author's work is how it is a great piece of Urban Fantasy, with the Reverse Harem as a bonus!

There is definite progression in the relationship front, and I really like the pace they are all.moving in.

The voice under the stairs is still be total favourite though!!!

If you like Urban Fantasy and Reverse Harem that you should absolutely give this series a try!

The date to deliver the rogue Shedim to the dragon liege is coming.

After the confrontation with the rogues in their hiding place, Willa and Azren had no more luck in finding traces of their whereabouts.

The group has uncovered the Lost are still alive, going against what the Arcana Institute proclaimed.

Unable to go to the Collective, it comes to Willa and the group to clean up the mess one Lost at the time.

And if that wasn't enough in delaying their search for the rogue Shedim, strange and violent mechanical monsters start showing up making everything more difficult by putting the group on the Collective path.

The time is ticking and Willa needs everyone's help.
The cursed men turned dog, the fatherly researcher ghost, her forced Shedim partner, her troll friends, a draconi prince, an Arcana magician, a protective hound and the voice imprisoned in the basement.

But the meeting with the dragon Queen changes everything.
A lot of questions, some answers and a few revelations.

Shock, heartache and anger are just the beginning.

***

Notes:

🔸World building: confusing

A lot of information is dealt in a very short time and in a somewhat messy manner, but it does keep a bit of the suspense.

Quick moving plot with rushed explanations and introductions.

Sometimes it felt like some plot developments were unnecessary and just create more confusion.

There are also a couple of parts that gave me the sense of being quite similar to previous books of the author. At least it gave me that idea.

🔸Beings

- Arcana(?): the only humans are the ones with access to Arcana(?) magic. All regular humans were exiled or died.

- Nephs: very diverse
They range in types and strength of powers.
They could be classified as one of several beings or simply as having some short of power.
Ex: empaths, strength, kelpie, the Lupin (+- werewolves), the Sanguinata (+- vampire, that here in this world have been very weakened from lack of humans), troll-descendant, ...

- Dragons: they can shift forms, have appetites for sex, some like to eat humans, some can eat one's soul by looking into their eyes

- Shedim: demons, guards of the dragons, in servitude.
They have very sharp teeth, claws, they are able to shift between their demonic form and a more human camouflage. It is mentioned they are known for their huge sexual appetites. They are given a single soulmate.

- Lost: sanguinata who had fed on nephs and became out of control, lost their minds and humanity.

- Genisi: mechanical, violent monsters that collect DNA and are not part of this world/dimension.

🔸Romance

A lot of potential love interests. Too many.

There are all the issues with commitment and being attracted to more than one person.

What I really am getting quite angry at is that a lot of authors seem to really downplay the sexual abuse scene. It is something traumatic. And a lot of authors do brush over it, especially if the abused one is a male.

The whole bragging about their sexual prowess and conquests is another issue.
Some may find this attractive and romantic, but not me.

***

As always my complete respect for the author and their work.
No hate nor hurt intended with this review.

There was just this “Yes!” Moment

The story is well written and interesting. I love the world she’s created and the character development is spot on.

I was complaining in my review of the last book about her attitude of being “invincible”. That’s always been my irritation with the FMCs in so much urban fantasy. Though to be honest, Cassidy has done a good job at her win some/lose some there’s a balance of bad*ss and *ss handed to you. But there’s this moment in near the end of the book where she admits to this very flaw and she stares it in the face. That’s the moment I truly appreciated her as a character and wow I had a visceral reaction to that “Finally! Yes!”

At the end of the book I didn’t react to the continuation of the story the same way as in the last book where it just seemed it ended abruptly. This time it sort of flowed into the continuation and felt more like a natural rest point.

I love the hound I’m waiting for him to start communicating! Guess I’ll find out but I do hope he doesn’t fade completely from the story like sometimes happens. I’m guessing we are gonna meet whoever is in the basement soon. I’m intrigued.

Overall, I think people will enjoy this continuation.

I gave it 3.5 stars

I was ready to jump into CITY OF THE LOST as soon as it hit my kindle.

We get some nice development on the storyline, but I honestly can't say there was a whole lot of character development on Wila's part. Who and what she is, is still a giant mystery and I hope we get some tidbits about her soon. I really want some hints about the guy locked up in the basement too. Quite a bit is revealed about Azren and his people. I am excited to learn more as they learn more.

There is a ton of action. People are hurt and there are a few moments where you're not so sure they might come out of stuff.

Again, just like I mentioned in book one. The romance is VERY slow burn. Frustratingly slow at times, but we do have some progress in that department in CITY OF THE LOST. The sexual tension is very high throughout the book though and I'm still not totally sure who all the men in the harem will be.

I still want to read more. CITY OF EVERDARK is set to release on Oct 16, 2018.

I loved this even more than book 1, mostly because the harem is really starting to come together. I'm pretty sure Hound is going to get a human form, and I need the voice to get released because I'm pretty sure I love him. I'm worried about how Tay will handle the harem in practice, and I'm glad Mack is still just a friend. As I said in my review of the previous book, I think it's refreshing that the MC has a close friendly relationship with a male instead of collecting every male she feels a slight connection to.

The Azren/Wila plot line started to remind me of Rowan and Aelin in the Heir of Fire and Empire of Storms, which I definitely did not mind because they're my otp (well, one of my main ones: the "o" is a lie).

There was an odd moment when the MC mentioned having night vision, though I don't remember her having that ability before and she doesn't seem to have it later.

I mentioned in my review of book 1 that her weapon seemed to constantly gain new powers, which was becoming ridiculous, but this book had the opposite problem, as only one of those abilities was referred to. It just seemed inconsistent.

I'm very excited to see where things go in book 3!

I loved book one but the second book in this series really has me hooked as I couldn't put it down once I had started. The cast dynamics are brilliant and so completely different for a soft reverse harem. Wila's relationships are starting to blossom with some of her guys as this is a slow burn story but it is so much more with a couple of mystery sub plots running through the books to keep you guessing what happens next. It does end with you wanting to pick up the next book and leaves you a little frustrated wanting to know what the heck is going on and lots of unanswered questions, but hey that's the sign of a good book and why I can’t wait for the next instalment. As with all of Debbie Cassidy's books the storey and plot are fantastic so a must read for any fan. Would also suit fans of C. N. Crawford, Emma L Adams, Chandelle La Vaun, K F Breene and Annabel Chase.

Wila is developing feelings for her demon guard, for the dragon prince, for the Arcana mage and for her troll friend. Moreover, she cannot figure out what is going on with her "friend" locked in the basement. She has never been one for attachments, but now everybody seems to gravitate toward her. If that wasn't enough, they don't have an update for the dragon liege, there are extraterrestrial robot gunning for her, and the dragon liege might not be the saviour that everybody thought, but a very cunning dragon.

I'm getting more hooked in Wila's story, however, I felt like the extraterrestrial creatures were a bit too much. I hope we'll get an explanation on why they were aiming for Wila soon.

Tease of the best kind

Gah, just as things started getting really good.... the book ends!! Another great story. Our fearless and self described invincible heroine finds she is not necessarily both of those things, and neither is her heart. She gains some new friends, both furry and not, as well as a few new enemies, some worse than others. I think the next book will be explosive - her vengeance on those that wronged her and her love for.... yeah. Suspense, terror, dry humor, badassery and Romance with teeth - is there a better way to spend an afternoon? The answer is no, there’s not. Can’t wait for book 3!!!

Great story, paranormal, and slow reverse harem

I started the books this morning and realized that I'm very intrigued by this series. You see that Willa, Trevor, Trey, Gilbert, Mack, Valance, and elora's favorite pet all have a piece in this story.

This story continues Willa's mission with her new associate and gaining another one on the journey. When Willa's mission has some road blocks, she learns some more things about herself and those around her. It makes you wonder who Willa really is and what is her background.

This series has captured my attention, and I'm sure it will capture yours too! I can't wait for it the other books to be out this year!

An Amazing Page-turner

Wila's story continues. She's under contract to the Shedim looking for the rogues. There is a ton of action in this story. The action kept me reading. There's more to the reverse harem in this book. It's a slow burn, sometimes it feels really slow. I love how developed each character is in this series. This book certainly upped the suspense, tension and danger from the first. Such an amazing world that gets you sucked in from the very beginning. Loved it! I can't wait to start the next.

Fantastic Follow Up!

I loved the first book, but this one was even better!
Willa is a terrific character, tough, yet kind, stubborn, yet fun, and very likeable. You really get to see a lot of different sides of her in this book.
The supporting characters are so diverse, from talking dogs, and dragons, to ghosts, and alien cops! There's a lot to love here.
I can't wait for book 3!

Wow!!!

I just love these epic Urban Fantasy books by Mrs Cassidy!!!! Wila is an awesome character with a great sense of humor! I laughed out loud several times during this book! The guys are everything you want your heroes to be and the relationships are developing nicely. City of the Lost seemed to clip along at a slower pace than the previous book, bit the plot was good and the action was constant. No significant forward progression on the relationships or the overall story line, except for a few teaser-reveals toward the end, when, yeah, we have another cliffhanger-type ending. A good read and the main heroine, Wila is starting to strengthen as a main character, and I like her growth in this book.
