I love the character of Tyrus Rechs, he's always awesome and I love to read stories about him. That being said, this one was not the 5 star level adventure I was hoping for. The meaning of the bit about the boy with the ball took too long to become clear, which made it difficult for me to be truly interested - why would I have to care about this boy? It becomes clear eventually of course, but it had taken too long for me to be really invested.
I also didn't like the part where Rechs doesn't have his armor, for quite a mundane reason. I mean, if it had been stolen, or lost during some awesome fight, that would have been something. But the way it was written, it came across as a pretty blatant plot device. These authors could have done better, especially with their track record of the series so far.
As for narration: Ray Porter is a good narrator and he was perfect for the Bobiverse series; but I like R.C. Bray (who narrates the main saga) much better for this particular genre, with all of the many hardass, gruff military heroing going on in these books.
Still four stars, because, you know - it's Rechs.
