“Heather Blanton is blessed with a natural storytelling ability, an ‘old soul’ wisdom, and wide expansive heart. Her characters are vividly drawn, and in the western settings where life can be hard, over quickly, and seemingly without meaning, she reveals Larger Hands holding everyone and everything together.”
MARK RICHARD, EXECUTIVE PRODUCER, AMC’S HELL ON WHEELS, and PEN/ERNEST HEMINGWAY AWARD WINNER

I write Christian Historical Western Romance. Yes, that often entails the use of firearms in a threatening manner. Sometimes there are fistfights. There may even be politically incorrect but historically accurate language. But also, there is always an inspirational message and strong allusions (at least) to the gospel.

A former journalist, I am an avid researcher and endeavor to skillfully weave truth in among fictional story lines. I love exploring the American West, especially ghost towns and museums. I have walked parts of the Oregon Trail, ridden horses through the Rockies, climbed to the top of Independence Rock, and even held an outlaw's note in my hand.

I grew up in the mountains of Western North Carolina on a steady diet of Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and John Wayne Westerns. My most fond childhood memory is of sitting next to my daddy, munching on popcorn, and watching Lucas McCain unload that Winchester! My daddy also taught me to shoot and, trust me, I can sew buttons on with my rifle.

I am a proud member of Western Writers of America.

My novels are all Christian Western Romance because this is the genre that lets me write about strong, pioneer women and men who struggle to find God and then live out their faith in real ways. Like good old fashioned Westerns, there is always justice, a moral message, American values, lots of high adventure, unexpected plot twists, and more than a touch of suspense. Of course, romance is always a strong element in my stories because it is such a beautiful gift from God and a perfect reflection of how he loves us: sacrificially and lavishly. My stories aren’t preachy or cheesy, but I hope they are inspirational, heart-warming, realistic, illuminating, and glorifying to God.

Normally I don’t like when people lie to cover something up. Well, I still didn’t care for this, but without the lie, the storyline would have fizzled.

Anyway, in order to help an unmarried pregnant woman (Angela), Joel Chapman pretended to be her husband so her father, a powerful, wealthy cattle baron (from Ask Me to Marry You) would not disown her.

I loved that a partially severed limb was the impetus for overcoming and triumph. I love that a loner Indian knew himself so well that he never let the prejudice all around him change who he was, nor his integrity. I loved that evil was put in its place.

As always, Heather Blanton adds a good deal about faith in God.

Good story despite the lies.

To Love and to Honor by Heather Blanton is an engaging Western romance. Having read several of this author's books, I kind of knew what to expect and was not disappointed. This is a story of an unexpected love that grows between two broken people. Blanton does a nice job of keeping the reader's interest with evocative characters and a plot that moves quickly and realistically. She touches on themes of forgiveness, unwanted pregnancies, the importance of faithfulness and honor. The historical aspects in the story add to the interest and show the author has done her homework in getting the time and setting right. Woven throughout are a strong thread of Godly values and the recognition that God is a personal God working in the lives of His children. To Love and to Honor is an easy read (I pretty much read it in one sitting--couldn't put it down!) and all in all is a good read. Although it is part of a series, it is easily read as a stand-alone book and readers can look forward to checking out the books that come before. I received a complimentary copy of the ebook and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.

I loved this story! I know some may say it borders on Christian read because a married man has feelings for another woman. I like that the author shows how real life is in this book. Even though Joel is married he is a broken man. Angela has sinned by having a relationship with a former actor out of wed lock and gets pregnant. They both are drawn to each other and help with the healing process. I love how the story shows that we all sin but God still loves us and can still show us the way we should go. We have all sinned and God keeps his hands on us and gently draws us back to him. The story draws you in from page one. The ending is beautiful, I could not put it down. I would give it more then 5 stars!

This book, like all other books I’ve read from Heather Blanton is written with skilled.
After I finished reading Book 4, I needed some time to reflect on the thrust of this book.

The Epigraph at the beginning of the book is from Isaiah 40:31 “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, sore like eagles; run and not grow weary, and walk but not faint.” An Epigraph, I assume captures the book’s overarching theme. So, the key idea is “Waiting upon the Lord.” If I wait on the Lord, I will get the positives the rest of the verse talks about. I have to admit, I didn’t pay close attention to this gem, until I went back and reviewed the book. That was a mistake on my part, because it is key.

Before I reviewed this book and noted the Isaiah 40 thrust, I was reminded of the quote from Sir Walter Scott’s narrative poem Marmion, “Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.” This book was full of people who did not wait on the Lord, but decided God needed some help to achieve certain desired ends. I list a few examples. Angela is willing to deceive her father and others by implying she is married to Joel Chapman. Joel has strong sympathy for Angela’s situation, so he acquiesces to the lie. Joel is on the stagecoach heading west because his wife has kicked him out of their house and told him to be useful and get a job. Joel suspects there is more to her derisive behavior of him, but he doesn’t fully voice his suspicions. We learn near the end of the book that the wife has been unfaithful to Joel and has deceived him. Angela’s father, Fairbanks has throughout the Evergreen series shown his willingness to use duplicitous behavior to achieve his personal objectives. Wow, this is an interesting cast of characters and they certainly help drive the theme. Proverbs 19:21 expands on the theme, “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.”

For me, this isn’t just a book about Joel and Angela, it is broadly about God’s people, who have a propensity to want to play God, usurp His plans, instead of waiting on the Lord and resting in His plan and purpose. “To Love and To Honor” gives a gripping tale, permeated with real human characters that show clear insight into our human propensity to go our own way without “checking in with God.”

I love a book that is more than the sum of its parts.

I discovered Heather Blanton’s books due to my love of Christian fiction with historical western settings. Her novels meet that requirement perfectly. Ms. Blanton tends to tackle subject matters that many avoid and for that reason they are usually quite realistic and sometimes gritty. Nevertheless she manages to keep them clean with an emphasis on faith which I appreciate.

To Love and to Honor features a married man who has lost his leg due to a war injury only to be abandoned by his wife. He meets a young, unmarried woman on the stage who has been abandoned by her lover when he discovered she was expecting his child. With no other options, the young lady is reluctantly returning home to a father she expects will be less than welcoming. Although he feels defeated, Joel Chapman is still enough of a gentleman to try to help Angela temporarily. Neither expects what happens next.

Yes, neither of these characters is the ideal hero or heroine of a Christian novel but yet they are because this story is one about redemption and restoration and how the Lord uses others to rescue hopeless situations and make them new again. I loved this book and always look forward to new ones by this author.

I voluntarily reviewed a digital copy of this book provided by the author. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own.

I initially gave this read 5 stars, or intended to, but my Kindle seemed to think it needed to stop at 3, so if you saw just my rating before this review, please disregard it. Heather Blanton deserves ever one of the 5 stars I've given her above.

I don't usually like, or read, romances, unless they are a minor part of a cozy mystery. Well, this isn't a cozy, it isn't a mystery, and it IS a romance, a blatantly Christian one (so of course I knew it would be clean and "cozy"). But I truly enjoyed it. Somehow the characters -- a retired veteran of the "Indian" wars in the old west, crippled with one leg amputated at the knee, the other an unmarried expectant mother returning home to her father's ranch in Wyoming -- immediately grabbed my attention and hung on until the end. I was caught up in their struggles to face their challenges as well as their forbidden attraction to each other. I guess there was a tiny bit of mystery -- unsolved -- tucked away in the story, but I'm not gonna give any clues to that; you'll just have to find it. And enjoy how Blanton resolves the challenges to the Glory of the Lord. Oh, and there's a sub-story also about a "forbidden love" between a Cheyenne Indian working at the ranch and a widowed missionary woman there to teach the Indian Children about Jesus. Altogether a wonderful story.

Like all the previous books in this series, To Love and to Honor didn't disappoint. Joel is dealing with a lot of insecurities due to his leg amputation and an estranged uncaring wife. Angela is a pregnant unmarried young woman who hopes to be accepted back home despite her cruel father. After meeting, Joel offers to claim he is Angela's husband and will stay briefly with her hoping her father will then take care of her. He is a hateful demanding man and berates Joel at every turn, calling him half a man. He wants him gone. However, staying on the ranch and once again gaining skills in the saddle has given Joel new confidence largely due to his friendship with Henry Long Feather, an Indian horse whisperer. Feelings grow between Joel and Angela though he is not free to act on them. There are struggles and challenges to overcome that bring this love story to a conclusion. This is another excellent book by Heather!

Joel is an honorable and Christian man. He was in the calvary. Now he is on his way to a job as a clerk sent by a wife that doesn’t want him. Abigale is a girl who wants to find her way in life. But with a father who doesn’t want her is this even possible? Joel and Abigale meet in a stagecoach heading to Evergreen. What follows is Joel finding who he is as a man in Gods eyes and his own. This is largely due to a new friend, Henry Long Feather. Abigale finds peace in who she is as a woman. This is a beautiful story of how these two find love in Gods arms. God is in the business of blessing those who obey Him. Another delightful story by Heather Blanton. A must read.

Love it!

I always love the characters Heather creates, but this hero was especially dear to me, being based on Dave Roever. I remember, vividly, hearing Dave speak at a church I attended some forty years ago. Really made an impact on me, and things he said were also in this book, regarding the vows taken and what wonderful woman he had... That was the type of woman Angela, our heroine, is. It's good to see a love story that has a hero who is not physically perfect - thank you for that, Heather. True love is based on the heart, not the mirror.

A beautifully written historical romance that takes place after the Civil War. When Captain Joel Chapman ends up having an amputation of his leg he feels like he's no longer the man he once was. When his wife becomes cruel towards him when he returns he leaves in search of finding employment so he can provide for them. He comes to the aide of a Angela Fairbanks, a damsel in distress who is an unwed, pregnant woman trying to return home to her less than tolerable father. Wonderful characters who show strength in the face of adversity and come together when they need one another.

Be historical problems or modern day problems, the mentality of people are the same.

Blanton knows how to pull you in to her stories and keep you wanting to know more. As with her other books, it was hard to put this one down. All the characters each have their own unique issues and problems that are intertwined with one another. A man who doubts his self worth. A woman struggling to be the daughter her father wants. Another man battling to be equal in the eyes of others. And A father full of rage, hate, and hurt. Wonderful story and a most talented writer.

This is a good book. It harkens back to a time when a soldiers honor mean something. Ex cavalry officer Joel Chapman is too much of a gentleman to let Angela Fairbanks face her ex general father alone so he offers to pose as her husband so her father will accept her as she is pregnant and unwed. His intention is to leave after a few days but changes his mind as he can see that her father will not treat her with love but with cruelty. Ms Blanton is an excellent writer and it shows up in this book.

To Love and to Honor: Expanded (Brides of Evergreen Book 4) was a most intriguing book. Heather Blanton is the author. A beautiful love story about a fallen woman and a soldier with a prosthetic leg. The tests they endured were great. Truly blessed they can finally marry and have the life they deserve.

Joel's friend, Long Feather convinces him he can ride a horse again this making it possible for Joel and Angela to have their dream come true.

Love overcomes

Long Feather and Joel are both men of strong character who must face issues that threaten how they see themselves. Drawn together by their challenges a friendship is born.
Each man must also face a crisis of the heart. Will he win the woman he loves?
This book touches on the issue of prejudice against those who may be different than us, and the faith to stand for our convictions.
Excellent book.

From Sin to love

A young lady wants a different life from what her father’s ranch offers. She does away to school but winds up acting where she falls into disaster only to be gifted and with no recourse but to return home. Her father has disowned her and Will surely not welcome her back. Especially since she is expecting. A chance meeting on the stagecoach with Joel will. Hangs her future.

An incredible story of forgiveness, redemption, and love. I am always amazed at how much Heather Blanton packs into a story, even a novella. Angela and Joel are complex individuals dealing with deep-seated pain, and their journey toward healing is not easy. Joel is a swoonworthy hero and I love his tenacity and drive. Angela has a quiet strength I admire. I was reminded that not everything always works out as we plan or would like, but God is with us every step of the way.

I can honestly say there wasn’t an emotion left untouched while immersing myself in this story. From sadness to joy, fear to faith, defeat to victory, I came away with a feeling of completeness and fulfillment, knowing the author’s heart was reflected on every page, in every scenario, serving to lift the heart of every reader who opens the pages of this book. I may be new to her work, but am now a forever fan!

Great Read!

How will Joel, an amputee from the Civil War, get out of the white lie his traveling companion told?
A fast paced storyline that keeps you turning the pages to find out what becomes of an Indian, widowed school teacher, a woman pregnant out of wedlock, an angry father, and an amputee separated from his wife.

Such a talented, educated writer! Read all her books. This book is one of many she has written. All have interesting, dynamic characters, real love, & inspiring Scripture. This book was an enjoyable read. Looking forward to a resolution on Long Feather's & Miss Laurie's romance.

A beautiful story where love for all races is presented

The theme of God’s love for all peoples is the basis for this lovely story. It showed redeeming love and how we are to follow Jesus example. This author rarely disappoints in writing these Down to earth stories. There is a couple of HEA in this book. It’s exciting, it’s soul stretching.it was a joy to read.

Precious

Prejudice is Prejudice. God called us to LOVE. Love one another is His greatest commandment. Yet we constantly find reasons to judge harshly and to criticize and disapprove of one another. I love how Heather Blanton has used God's greatest command to weave a sweet, precious story of love and redemption.

Another great story in the series.
Joel is a good man. He's being honorable and respectful, though it does become more difficult with time. Fairbanks and a couple of his cowhands are bullies, and it takes a lot to not punch them in the face at every interaction.

There is a lot of action in this sweet western romance story.

The whole half man.

So true to life. The ' big' man throws his weight around, pushing away or worse eliminating those in his way... such a sad angry life. Then the honourable, decent man shows the other up the other for what he is.. There is no change in their characters at the finish ... and so often is what happens in true life. And the finish is very enjoyable yarn.

Really enjoyed this book, mostly for the characters. The time period is one of my favorites to read about also, fiction or nonfiction. The one thing I questioned historically is the idea and acceptability of divorce then both morally and legally.

Sweet Christian Romance

This is a sweet story about Angela, a pregnant and unmarried lady who is returning home to her unkind and unloving father. On her way she meets Joel, a Calvary soldier that is wounded inside and out. This is their story.
