Jenny and Padraig were starcrossed friends of long standing. Initially she was too young and he was not ready for a serious relationship, then they were each otherwise involved. He’s had his eye on Jenny since she was sixteen to his twenty.
Paddy has a grown daughter and a long string of conquests, resigned that Jenny will never be his, until the president of a local MC, Doug declares his interest in Jenny, Paddy’s knee-jerk reaction is declaring that they’re a couple.
Annie, Paddy’s daughter rings her father desperate for protection after being assaulted by a delusional madman at which point it is revealed that Gibson’s son Callum and Annie have been secretly involved and Jenny’s abusive marriage is uncovered.
Each main character thus far seems to have been ensnared into premature parenthood or coupledom. If men are that gullible...the odds of unplanned parenthood is high. This one tampered with all the condoms to force a pregnancy on the H. The exes were sadly lacking in redeeming qualities.
There were few light moments dissecting Gibson’s bedroom prowess...apparently he has the stamina of the energiser bunny.
He’s fifty-five to her fifty. Marybeth, his daughter, Annie’s mother lived under his roof for ten years, during that time, from the day she unpacked until a week after she exited, he remained celibate. . . he was celibate even after discovering Marybeth deliberately trapped him into early fatherhood.
He met Marybeth in a bar, they went to her place, and…….”
“Her place.”
“Her condoms.”
“Condoms she’d stuck a needle through. Multiple times.”
He found several other packets she’d tampered with.
He'd met Marybeth, and her friends before, and–”
He stopped talking abruptly and looked uncomfortable.
“You slept with one of her friends.”
He made a face.
“More than one of them?”
He sighed.
“Paddy, really? All of them?”
Everyone disliked Marybeth because of who she was to Paddy but even more because she was such an intensely dislikeable woman. Joke had asked Jenny several times if she’d thought Paddy had gone insane, and when Gibson came home for a visit, he tried to talk to Paddy about it. Their talk ended in a fight, and it had taken weeks for the bruises to fade. And Paddy had stayed with Marybeth.
She’d not been a good mother. She'd done the bare minimum of what was expected and not one thing extra.
Realising Jenny’s nightmare during her ten years of her marriage, Gibson and Paddy share a light moment at Callum’s expense:
“Your son is a good man, Gib.”
“He used to sh*t his pants.”
“What?”
“He loved riding.”
“I know.”
“Loved it so much he wouldn’t tell me he needed to stop and take a sh*t. So, he did it in his pants.”
“On a horse?” Paddy asked. “Man, that’s gross.”
“F… yeah,” Gib said emphatically. “Always had gallons of water and a change of clothes in the car.”
“He was what? Four? Bet he doesn’t do it anymore,” Paddy murmured.
“Yeah, but it's weird hearing him saying he's someone's man when he's still that boy with sh*t halfway up his back to me,” Gibson said quietly.
Paddy grinned, recognizing the feeling. Annie was someone’s woman, but she was still his little girl.”
“Annie vowed to kill Martin, and I informed her that her dad had called dibs, after which Joke would do his bit and then apparently Gibson would urinate on the corpse. She stopped crying and stared at me. Lee calmly shared that after Gibson had relieved himself, she would pour gasoline on my ex-husbands remains but if Annie felt up to it, she could toss a match on the sorry pile of sh*t. Annie swallowed, Lee smiled sweetly, and I started laughing. Then Joke put three shot glasses in front of us with a wink, Mac and Day joined us, and after that our evening changed into something which ended with drunk-sex.”
You can live a life dwelling on regrets or enjoy the life of here and now.
Perhaps he should have made a move all those years ago. Perhaps she should have. Perhaps the time hadn’t been right back then, but it was now.
Rape, Domestic abuse, Assault, Kidnapping...elements for drama.
