Bookshop Girl #2

Life's a Beach

Rate this book
The second in a new laugh-out-loud and sparky teen series, perfect for fans of Holly Bourne and Louise Rennison.

Holly and Paige are at a literary festival in Skegton-On-Sea. They've been looking forward to it for ages. It's one of the biggest book festivals around - and there's a pop up bookshop tent and a lot of Big Shot Writers. It's basically like they're being PAID to go on a BFF HOLIDAY and SELL A FEW BOOKS! They had to beg their grumpy boss Tony to put their names forward. He ummed and ahhed and said he wasn't sure it was a good idea. But they're here at last and it's brilliant.

Well, kind of. It's true that there's a diva of an author called Minnie, who dresses head to toe in pink, and insists that Paige picks fresh flowers for her signing table every day, even though it's raining. But along the way, Paige begins to find that there's quite a lot to learn from Minnie - not least, how to reach out for the things she wants . . . and the boy she likes.

Written by debut author and bookseller Chloe Coles, this is the second in a new teen series that will make you want to rush out and take shelter in your nearest bookshop!

We catch up with best friends Paige and Holly as they embark on an adventure out of their boring town and head for Skegton On Sea and a book festival full of surprises awaits them once they arrive.

From a hot boy knocking Paige off her feet, an erotic fiction writing elderly lady and discovering that working a book festival isn't as easy as it many actually sound!

It was an hilarious read and kept me so entertained as we see how the book festival really tried Paige's patience as authors aren't how she expects and things go crazy wrong. I can't wait for more adventures with Paige and Holly in the future, especially as things are going well romance wise for the pair!

I have to say I think this was slightly better than the first one.

I love following Paige and Holly on their adventures and seeing all the trouble they get into because they often end up with hilarious results.

I still can’t get on with all the shortened words and OMGs and all that because really, can you please just write ‘oh my god’?
Do teenagers actually speak like that? Because I can’t be doing with it.

However, I will say that these books are really good for quick, lighthearted reads, when you want something that doesn’t require a lot of concentration and will give you a lot of laughs.

Also makes you a little nostalgic about your teenage life (especially when I’ve just had a birthday and feel like an old woman!).

I couldn’t wait to read this book after already reading the first book in the series and loving it!!
This is the second book in The Bookshop Girl series and still features Paige and her best friend Holly and all their bookish antics!!
This time the story takes place at a literary festival at Skegton-on-Sea. Paige and Holly can’t believe their good luck, as they are actually being paid to go on a best friends holiday and sell books!!
I loved this book and couldn’t stop laughing at all the hilarious situations that Paige finds herself in!
I am also extremely happy that there is going to be a third instalment that is set in wonderful Paris!

First of all, I have to mention this beautifully bright cover. It pairs perfectly with the debut book, using similar colours and a similar layout. All of these illustrations were also done by Chloe herself. I love it when the author is also the illustrator, especially when they are as talented as Chloe.

Just like in her first book, Chloe's writing is very humorous and had me laughing out loud on several occasions. There are so many funny moments that showcase Chloe's true talent for comedic writing. It really was a joy to read, even with the cringey moments in there.

It was great to read more about characters that had already been introduced in the previous book, building on their personalities and following them through another book-related adventure. I enjoyed where this book took place, it was a nice setting to read about at the end of the summer.

I'm not going to say too much more about it because I don't want to end up spoiling anything if you haven't yet read the first book.

I enjoyed this book so much. A book about books is just what you need sometimes and when I picked this up it was exactly the kind of book I needed to read. I definitely recommend this for a funny, enjoyable read, but obviously make sure that you read Bookshop Girl first.

I'm also excited that there's a little announcement on the last page to let you know that there will be a third book coming soon. I can't wait to see what happens with Paige next, especially as it says it will be set in Paris!

Paige and Holly, the giddy but always dedicated teenage bookshop girls of Bennet’s Bookshop have managed to convince their grumpy boss to send them to the famous Skegton-On-Sea Literary Festival. A mini-escape from their dull hometown to a seaside (okay still small) town, their first vacation as BFFs, being surrounded by books, selling books to book lovers and possibly getting a chance to meet their idol, a musician-turned-artist has the two excitable teenagers….well, excited.

But Paige being Paige, a magnet for embarrassing situations and slapstick accidents will soon realize that a Literary festival is not as glamorous as she pictured it in her head. Attending to the whims and fancies of a celebrated romance writer of eight decades, trying not to physically destroy the one cute boy of Skegton, not having her rose-coloured glasses crunched when she finally meets her idol all while ensuring that her mistakes and micro-dramas don’t hamper her present job and future plans means that Paige has her plate full.

As always, I am not the target audience for this series but I adore the zany writing, the female friendship between Paige and Holly, the oh-very-British humour, the mini life-lessons and the general cozy atmosphere that the author manages to create around the world of books. Some of the scenes do seem exaggerated but somehow, it works for silly Paige with her big heart and bigger aspirations.

I continue to enjoy this series and look forward to the next instalment.

My views about this book are quite similar to the first in the series. It's a light hearted fun and enjoyable read for most teens. I wouldn't suggest this book for young adults/adult readers as the tone of the novel is very young.
As with the first book the abbreviated words and slang grated on my nerves and lowered the quality of the writing and because of this lowered my overall rating.
The characters are extremely relatable as clumsy, fun loving teenagers who are obsessed with celebrities. I didn't notice much character progression throughout the story but this didn't take away from the charm.
I adore the covers of these novels as they are incredibly bright and eye catching. I would definitely recommend this series to most teens who enjoy a light hearted book.

I really really enjoyed this book. I like reading books about people who love books and people who go to book festivals. I loved the setting of this book I loved that the book festival was near the beach. This book had a happy feel and atmosphere to it. My favourite character was lady Minnie Rockwell I like the way she talked she was a posh lady she wore posh clothes and I adored her little dog. My second favourite character was Paige she was the main character of the book what I liked about her was she looked after and supported her best friend Holly. Lady Rockwell gave Paige some very good advice. My favourite part was when Paige dressed up as Peppa pig and she entertained the children. That was a very fun and laughable part in the book.

It isn't very often I love a sequel more the first in a series, this is one of those occasions. Some of you may remember my first of Bookshop Girl from a few months ago. Following on from the first book, Life's A Beach continues to follow the main character Paige and her best friend Holly.

This book is super short, but it's packed full with funny, heartwarming moments, and messages a teenage me would have absolutely loved. Paige grows a lot as a character in this book, and Holly is great as always. I loved the layer of romance in the background, but nothing can be compared to how much I loved Minnie and her dog! They were probably my favourite characters in this book.

I can't say much more, because, as I said before it's a short book, and I really don't want to risk any spoilers for my readers.

4 out of 5 stars.

Loved it! Laugh out loud funny! 😂 Could totally see this as a hilarious movie! Even better than the first in the series which was enjoyable also. Looking forward to the third installment of Paige and Holly. Love Chloe Coles! This was the perfect read as I am at the beach! 🌊. Good times.

I love Paige Turner and the adventures she goes on so much, I can't wait for the 3rd book! I started reading this on my way home to Ramsgate and it made me feel so full of pride for seaside towns, they deserve all the love and respect. I kinda wanna try reading a romance novel now, thanks Paige!

This was a fun and brezzy book to read. I read this in a day and i just so happened to go to the beach that day. I suffered secondhand embarrassment while reading this but it was funny how often she embarrassed herself. But she makes me want to go to a book festival so bad.

Life’s A Beach is the follow up to the enjoyable Bookshop Girl, by Foyle’s bookseller Chloe Coles. Who better to write a book for bibliophiles? The aptly named Paige Turner’s second adventure finds her and BFF Holly at the famous Skegton-on-Sea Literary Festival. They can’t believe their luck at being paid to do what they love doing: selling books and meeting people buying books, while at the same time getting to meet famous authors and hopefully their hero, musician turned artist Johnny Hoxton. But as we might expect, knowing Paige’s predilection for unwittingly causing chaos wherever she goes, things do not turn out as she planned. Paige does get to meet a world famous author, and learns a lot from her, but it’s not how she expected. The second in the Bookshop Girl series does not disappoint. The love for books and all things bookish is still there; there are some very funny moments – when Robbie turns to the back page and folds the book over breaking the spine I winced and laughed out loud at the same time; Paige and Holly’s relationship is heart-warming; and the budding romance between Paige and Robbie is convincing. Having been to many literary festivals over the years I recognised the gut wrenching feeling when you discover that someone you have long admired turns out to be somewhat of a disappointment, and conversely the joy of finding someone new to read and admire. Although I am not the target audience, I enjoyed this book very much, even the ‘teenspeak’. At a time when there is such an emphasis on technology and everyone appears to be glued to their various devices, it is refreshing to celebrate ‘real’ books. Hopefully Paige and Holly’s festival fun will encourage other young readers to support local literary festivals. They’re usually much better organised than the one at Skegton-on-Sea!

Paige Turner (yes, REALLY!) and her best friend Holly are back and this time they have escaped dreary old Greysworth. It's October half term and they are off to Skegton-On-Sea, maybe not the best time to visit an English seaside resort but this is an opportunity of a life time - they are representing Bennett's Bookshop at the Skegton-On-Sea Book Festival. What could be better?

Although very short this is a book packed full of humour and a joy not only of life but of books. Perceived wisdom has it that you should write about what you know and this seems to hold true for Chloe Coles - she loves books and it shows. Although she would hate me - I dog ear books, I crack their spines, but I love them. Even worse, I have a major e-reader habit so I don't frequent bookshops more than 5 or 6 times a year.

Like the first in the series this book is narrated by Paige and is full of the little things that are important to a teenage girl. Getting that perfect selfie, finding the perfect chip shop with the best chips and meeting your hero - even if the hero turns out to be a disappointment you still HAVE to.

Initially I found the character of Lady Minnie to be a disturbing mix of Dame Barbara Cartland (real) and Dame Sally Markham (fictional Little Britain character). However, as we begin to see more of her through Paige's eyes she becomes less of a caricature (and a monstrous one at that) and more of a clever woman who knows how to market herself and get what she wants.

This is a fun read and even though I am way outside the target audience I genuinely loved it. A good story should captivate and that is what this one does!

I was so drawn to this book for many reasons, the cover is fun, colourful and playful, the title is a fun play on words and generally the cover is just cute.

The blurb got me super excited because who doesn't want to read a book about books and authors and all those fun things?!

The story was brilliant! I immersed myself fully into Paige and Holly's world, very envious of their jobs and the fact they went to a book festival. The story took me to Skegton-on-sea where everything seems to happen...it reminded me of Skegness (maybe this was part of the inspiration).

I recently moved away from Skegvegas as it is so well known as and this book transported me right back there although Skegton has a lot more going on. I laughed out loud many a time but page 181 really cracked me up when Paige and Robbie discuss the tattoo shop. I laughed so much because i can fully believe someone would walk in wanting a portrait of their child and leave with a Phil Mitchell baby tattoo.

All in all this book deserved all five stars because it is well written, light hearted and made me reminisce about my own memories in Skegness of meeting a boy in my local Whsmith (I couldn't make this up) and just generally reminding me of all the fun i had living in a seaside town for seven years.

The second book in the series follows Paige and her best friend Holly on from their adventure of saving their little bookshop in their home town and all the way to Skegton-on-sea for the biggest literary festival ever.

Just from reading the first book, I knew instantly that the second would bring even more laughter and 'aww' moments with the girls. We get a chance to see Paige meet and hopefully find a really nice boy again while trying to survive the demands of a Romance novelist who just seems to be the worst thing since mushy peas according to Paige.
We see both Paige and Holly's ups and downs of working somewhere new, somewhere where they have never been before and not only try to survive the hassle of fans and the dreadful colour pink, but to try and meet their favorite author and illustrator. But sometimes, meeting your idols aren't always the best thing to do...neither are they when you sneak after them (thanks Holly), to try and spy on what they are doing...it's just going to end in disaster.

Filled with stomach churning funny moments, Life's a beach is a quick witted read which is going to leave you wanting more and more of Paige and Holly's adventures, both in and out of their little bookshop in the middle of a town no one has ever really heard of.

I enjoyed reading the first Bookshop Girl Book and so was excited to read Life's a Beach but it sadly didn't meet up to my expectations. Although I found the first book hilarious and enjoyable to read I found this one a lot more predictable and so I lost interest quite early on.
I didn't find Paige or Holly got up to a lot on their holiday and anything they did do outside of work either went wrong which became repetitive and predictable or they were just following orders off others. I liked how they met characters like Minnie but I wish they'd done more together than just listen to her orders as then I don't feel like I want to like her as a diva in that way. Minnie had great advice at the end but it took her the whole book to get there!
I like how Paige and Holly followed there dreams and did all they could to meet there idol and it shows that you shouldn't give up. I hope in any future books we get to read more about the girls friendship again and have them focus on what's important to them which is what made the first book so great.

Another fun book of shenanigans.
It’s enjoyable and ridiculous, sometimes a little bit too far but you just go with it. Paige winds up in the most outlandish positions at every available moment, and it very much the living embodiment of ‘anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.’ It’s super British; which is honestly the best thing about this, and what makes it so addictive to read.
I did like this one even more than the first book, though she hung out with Holly a lot less than expected, especially considering they were on holidays together and sharing a hotel room and workspace.
Would I call this feminist? Nope. Paige likes the idea of feminism, but doesn’t actually understand the concept beyond not wanting men to bother her for her looks. But it’s okay if she does the same thing to boys. I’m also fairly certain it failed the Bechdel test, which is a bit sad. Though there is a scene screaming about a dog, it possibly passes?
Beyond that it is a light quick read, and definitely put me in a better mood for having read it.

3.5 stars.

I give it this many stars because the plot is simple and the read is super easy and quick. More of a LOL read than a I just gained something valuable out of this read. It's just light, and cheery. So if you're not into the deep dark books I'd recommend this.

We follow Paige again as she goes on a short break away to Skegton-on-sea with her best friend Holly to take part in a book festival.

It's fun, and of course Paige doesn't come without accidents. It's hilarious and silly and definitely a must read for teens. Paige also finds a bit of romance in this one so yay. She's so dorkily cute. You definitely need friendships like hers and Holly's as a teen. Ugh and I just loved Minnie Rockwell who was so hilarious! Also girl power FTW.

The next book is set in Paris! So can't wait to see what the two girls get up to. I hope it's a school trip! I sort of want to see them in their school environment.

Anyway, thanks to ReadersFirst for providing me with a copy for review.

Best friends Holly & Paige have wrangled their way to the hottest literary festival around at Skegton-On-Sea. They are totally infectious... their love of books and their need to be at one of the biggest literary festivals ever is totally relatable! But life is never as straightforward as it seems and soon Holly is stranded with author Lady Rockwell and her DIVA demands. Is this a bookshop girls dream or nightmare? Join the dynamic duo on their hilarious trip, to find out!

Coles' writing is engaging, easy-to-follow (for the younger audience it's aimed at) and entertaining. You'll soon be laughing at the antics the girls find themselves in. Among the fun and games, there are important topics brilliantly addressed as the girls experience the highs and lows of being teenagers.

Paige Turner is the funniest, feistiest and feminist character since Louise Rennison's Georgia Nicolson!

I recently signed up to Readers First, a website where you can preview upcoming books and potentially win them before official publication. Upon a browse of the site, I noticed that there were only a few hours left for the chance to win a copy of the latest Bookshop Girl novel, Life’s a Beach. I typed up my “first impression”, submitted it, and didn’t think much would come of it. Considering it was my first ever entry I didn’t even entertain the idea that I would win, so you can imagine my delight when the email came through to say a copy was on its way to me. The book arrived a few days later, dazzling me with its dreamy blue cover.

Very funny and a must teen read

I really like this book for an easy read. Clearly aimed towards a younger audience of tweens/teens this book is a light hearted read for anyone despite.
While the plot is somewhat simplistic the characters make up for it, it really takes you back to teen feelings of fun, friendship and carefree days at the seaside.

It puts a smile on your face as some bits are really funny and the friendship between the two main girl characters really warms your heart. If you are looking for a feel good book that's quick and easy to read, this is the one (can especially imagine the escapism this book would bring on a sunny day at by the sea!)

Recommend for all ages but I can image the laughs a teen would get from this book!

The first book in this duo of books, which is called 'Bookshop Girl', I enjoyed and thought it was good but this next book was AMAZING! I got it for my birthday on Friday and read it on Saturday, it took me three broken up hours to read all 188 pages. I have never read a book so quick in ages! The storyline is much more my own style as it is set around a book festival and nowhere else really which makes it more of an easy read but I loved it. I love how Paige starts off by hating Minnie and not knowing who she is to then getting on really well with her and getting something off her, I am not going to spoil it for you. But you must read this book it is even better than the first like I have already said like a million times.

Enjoyed the first book more, but this was still a great read! Loved the subjects and the characters, I just felt like the book went too fast... like the author was rushing a bit. I can totally relate, though. As a NaNoWriMoer, I know how hard it is to write a book when you have a deadline. Found a few grammar mistakes, but that's okay, you can't catch everything! Anyway... can't wait for the next one!

I really like Bookshop Girl. A really good book for really big bookworms like myself but again some of the choice of words weren't great. It's okay for a book aimed at teenagers but I really think the author needs to becareful about what words she's using. There are teenagers reading this and I don't think we should be encouraging this type of behaviour in books.

Clumsy girl in love!

Paige Turner is a very clumsy teen who gets into many mishaps in skegton on sea yet ends her journey with the love of her life. I love how this story is full of twists and turns and constant adventures along with some helpful advice along the way. I really recommend this book to tweens and teens but even adults too if you love a quick action packed book!

The second adventure of best friends Paige and Holly see them set off to a book festival in Skegton-On-Sea to work and (they hope) to meet famous writers especially one young and hot illustrator.

Everything doesn't go to plan for poor Paige, she meets a hot native of Skegton and manages to fall off his moped, having to pick up dog poo from one of the book tents to accidently disturbing several young readers when fainting in a costume.

A quick fun, fast paced humorous second book by Chloe Coles. It had me laughing out loud in several places and you cant help but see yourself in the young Paige at aged 16! Definite read for those who want to chuckle and literally cringe along with Paige and Holly.

Thank you to Readers First for providing me with this book to read and review.
