"Not so far from where you are is a place just like this place, except things are slightly off, a little to the left.
The differences are distracting at best and frightening at their worst...
How did you get here, and why?"
Lottie's been feeling ill, or 'off' at the least, the difficulty of articulating exactly what's wrong leaving her even more isolated within herself. A break away with her family in the crisp, green goodness of nature seems like it could shake off any cobwebs, but it becomes apparent that what she's facing is very real, and that there's no quick fix.

“Look around you. Not so far from where you are is a place just like this place. Except things are slightly off… a little to the left. The light vibrates are a different pace. Your home is now a cluster of unrecognizable shapes and textures. Familiar objects are now painful to look at. Your friends are conspiring against you. Are you dreaming? Are you sick? Are you just imagining things? You’re probably able to snap out of it if you tried hard enough, or maybe you’ve lost your mind?”

This gorgeously illustrated graphic novel shows the ugliness of depression in a hauntingly uncanny fashion. The term depression is thrown around a lot, and sometimes seems to have the connotation to refer to someone who’s a bit sad from time to time, or someone who spends their time along. But Summer Break shows a scarily real side of the illness which can manifest as all consuming and enveloping. Suddenly everything is fake. Maybe reality doesn’t even exist anymore. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Help is out there - through support systems, mental health professionals, and (for some) medication/s. All of which has been so beautifully encapsulated here.
