Rate this book
When she starts a new job at Crestview retirement home, Juliet discovers that something unusual is waiting for her in an abandoned part of the building. At first, she think the mysterious Jennifer Mathis is some kind of ghost. Later, however, Juliet learns that Jennifer has certain powers that could be extremely useful.

Meanwhile, eleven years ago, a younger version of Juliet has to cope with the death of her mother. Forced to live with her father, Juliet discovers that she has some unusual talents. Soon she's embarking upon a killing spree, the consequences of which look set to remain hidden until the fateful day when she eventually enters Crestview.

The Night Girl is the story of a girl gone wrong; a girl who discovered she has a dark skill for murder. Part horror story, and part character study, it's the tale of someone who has tried desperately to fit in with the rest of the world, but who ultimately finds herself running out of time.

This book got off to a really strong start, it had a great creepy vibe and I was really into the story at the beginning. Unfortunately, the story went downhill very quickly.

The book was very poorly edited and while I can forgive the occasional typo or grammatical error, the wrong character names were used a lot and every time it happened it pulled me completely out of the story.

Some parts of the story were also extremely unrealistic.

I also really did not enjoy the epilogue.

If Jean Paul Sartre and Wes Craven collaborated, they would likely come up with something akin to The Night Girl, a first-rate horror tale with existential overtones.

Cross slowly, and with artful precision, erects her main character, Juliet Collier, switching back and forth between the present and 11 years ago.

At first Juliet appears to be a normal teenage girl filled with the usual angst, exhibiting disinterest, and rebelliousness against her father; but ever so slowly the author peels back layer after layer of Juliet’s personality, to reveal her true nature.

Cross keeps us guessing throughout, particularly regarding Jennifer Mathis. Is she a ghost, a figment of Juliet’s imagination, or something else entirely?

Cross’s final literary coup d'etat comes when she somehow creates an ending that is both satisfying yet remaining enigmatic.

A great read; not for the squeamish.

Wow! This book.......wow! Amy Cross has done it again. About halfway through,I started thinking ' Holy cow, this girl is bananas.' That wasn't the half of it. Fantastic story that had me wanting to read faster than I could turn pages

Story was good. Very atrocious editing. I would say the wrong character name was used 15+ times...

This was a strange little horror story. I’m not entirely sure what I just read.

First, the bad. The grammar, the spelling, the punctuation. A Book: Now with More Typos. Who cares about punctuation? An extra E for you! Her, him, who cares? Periods? Who needs ‘em? Whee!

Holy crap, Amy Cross. Get an editor. To readers, if this is the sort of thing that ruins a book for you, this is not a book you’ll enjoy. That lack of attention to detail usually annoys me to no end. I suppose it’s a testament to Cross’ bizarre story that I did read this to the end.

Bizarre. Strange.

Yes, it’s all that and more.

Have you watched Dexter? This is like that, but weird.

Our (anti)heroine is Juliet Collier, a young woman recently employed as the night girl at Crestview Retirement Home. On her first night, she’s left to wander the spooky halls alone, and bumps into the terrifying Jennifer. Is Jennifer real? A ghost? Yes. No. Maybe.

This is told in first person, with every other chapter being told in the present or the past.

In the past we have the child Juliet, dealing with a dying mother, and a father she has no love for. And child Juliet has some … issues. Maggot issues. Dead people issues. Psychotic issues.

This book goes to some disturbing places. Those with weak stomachs shouldn’t read it. I made the “ew” face more than once. There’s some elder abuse, plenty of dead bodies, some slug eating, and lots of twists and turns.

I’ll see what else Ms. Cross has to offer. Hopefully her other books have been edited. If not, I’ll have to pass.

This is one strange book. I finished it (finally!). It's one of those stories where you just keep reading because it's so weird you want to find out if it gets any better. It doesn't. Rambling on and on, alternating between current time and eleven years ago, this book's main character is pretty unlikable, condescending, and obnoxious. The story line is fairly predictable, but does offer a few surprises, so some folks may like it. I found it kind of annoying. Typos and grammatical errors sprinkled throughout didn't help my opinion. All in all, I'd say skip this one unless you've got time on your hands to waste reading a mediocre story about a psycho female serial killer.

Another chilling read from this imaginative author, this time from inside the mind of a killer.

I do like how this author uses first person narrative and how the story switches back and forth in time so that information is revealed slowly, thus increasing suspense and detailing the character so that they are realistic and believable, despite the 'fantasy' of horror.

Overall, an enjoyable, original and imaginative story.

Bizarre!

Well, I got through to the end of the book, typos and editorial mishaps notwithstanding. This wasn't an Amy Cross classic by any means. The idea of a psychologically deranged female serial killer was interesting but, for me at least, the author just didn't carry it off. At times I found the story, quite frankly, boring. A more accurate score would have been 2.5.

Very slow start and a truly ridiculous end.

This book took a long time to get going but as a few positive reviews said the same thing I stuck with it. The middle was quite good and I did want to find out what happened. By about 70% I had partially worked it out but not to the extreme that it turned out to be. No way could she have done what she supposedly did at the age of 7. Can't really say any more without giving the story away. And as others have said this book is riddled with proof reading/copy editing errors. I won't be reading any more by this author.

I don't really know what to say other than this book really messed me up. It just kept getting worse and worse. The writing was amazing, this author has an incredible imagination. The only reason it's not 5 stars is because of numerous typos that happened throughout the book, the major ones were using the wrong name for one of the characters, and changing the relationship of two of the characters, going from mother and son to father and daughter.

What a train wreck... You can't look away!

I kept wanting to give over, go to another book. HA! I had this sense of horror while experiencing a need to know more. I honestly can't remember another book that has knocked me for a loop as this one has. Amy Cross scares me! I wonder if she and I could converse over a cuppa and part as friends? If this is merely her imagination.... WTH are her nightmares like? Most definitely, "The Night Girl" is one gigantic horror story!

A very interesting take on how a serial killer deals with what they have done. I was surprised at several parts. I found myself feeling sorry for her and then sickened by how easily she was able to justify killing others. It went back to her past and the author tied the past well with the future. I LOVE Amy Cross. She is a great addition to the horror genre.

So so many picky reviews on this book, but I couldn't do any better so why on.earth would I criticise. Personally I liked the book, kept me wanting to read more. Delving inside the unbalanced mind of Juliet, the murderous cold hearted killer & the caring side of her towards the elderly clients under her care.

I enjoyed this weird tale on mental illness/serial killer type of book. At first it was scary then omg weird and horrific. Didn't see the twist with her father but it really added to what was going on in Juliet's brain. I've read several of Amy Cross's books and they were all good reads. There are plenty of typo's and she really needs a good editor but to me those editing errors didn't take away from the story. I had a hard time putting my kindle down while reading this story, I couldn't wait to see how it ended.

Not one of Amy Cross' best but still I enjoyed it. I did find myself wanting to know what happens next but quite a few times able to know what was going to happen which maybe why I didn't enjoy it as much as some of Amy Cross's other work.

Amazing psychological journey!!

This book kept me guessing until the very end! When I say the very end I literally mean the last 5 pages! It was a psychological maze in the mind of a serial killer! Amy Cross is definitely becoming one of my favorite authors!

This book was great. i couldn't put it down. Page turner for sure and definitely my favorite so far of her books. Only problem is, grammer still lacks a lot. It's hard and confusing when the wrong names are placed and him and her is backwards etc

Super sloppy research. The facility in the book is run like no retirement home I have ever heard of. I couldn’t take any description of how it was run with out laughing. Things happened in the story with no rational explanation...book could have been really good

I thoroughly enjoyed this twisted tale. A very demented little girl grows into a very insane young woman and by the end you're absolutely blown away at just how crazy she truly is. A great read!
