Crossing Barriers tells the story of three neighbors. Lisa has food phobias and anxieties about challenges to the comfort zone of her habit-driven life. Maddie is a food adventurer and loves discovering new things but she's nursing a hurt in her own love life. When they befriend their new neighbor, Eunhae, they experience new foods and are inspired by the story of her grandmother’s harrowing escape crossing the border from North to South Korea. They are most surprised that her grandmother would actually return to North Korea in search of her husband. These conversations give the friends a new perspective on foods, on love and the faith in God needed to cross life’s barriers.
This is a fascinating subject and page turner. I couldn’t put the book down. I had to read on and find out what happens next. Terrific characters I wish were my neighbors. I know nothing about Korea, but it was nice to visit the place through the story tellers eyes. Keep writing to us, please, Helen :)
I truly enjoyed this book, especially the interaction with the Korean cultiure and cuisine. Brought back many memories of my time in Korea. The stories of the harsh conditions after the Korean war and the chaos endured by those fleeing south were both enlightening and inspiring.
