More than marauders and bloodthirsty conquerors, the Vikings were builders of a civilization which influence may still be seen in the modern world. The Viking Age is arguably one of the most fascinating epochs in history, and in this book, a new narrative is presented based on Viking history as it is told in the Norse Sagas.
Viking Legacy represents a new generation of books exploring the Viking Age. By integrating the Saga literature with other sources, a more complete picture emerges of this increasingly popular era, and a civilization that would change the course of history.
This book is perhaps the most well written nonfictional book I have ever read. It is also one of the most important books I’ve read. Not merely because is breaks common myths to pieces, but more importantly because the author handle the humans of the past with respect.
It is a must-read for all who are interested in Vikings, in history or in how to understand and discover the past. Simply a brilliant piece of literature!
This is a book of mainly Norwegian history concerning The Viking Age. It draws many of its information from the sagas and archeological evidence. The appendices address the question how historically accurate the sagas can be seen and makes its points in a concise and intelligent manner. There is a strong argument made for the political influence that Norse society had on modern democracies and a sense of individual freedom. A thoroughly enjoyable read for anyone interested in The Viking Age and its impact on our world.
A very readable account of the Viking age and how the stories were recorded. It begins with the story out Harald Fine Hair and his quest to unite Norway under his command and continues to the end of the era in 1066. The book also explains the various sources of historical data and how the Iceland sagas are once again being studied to bring to light this storied and partially understood culture.
Detailed history of the political, military history of Norway and Viking Age. Like it because it was not the usual overview but was a good look at the time by a Norwegian Professor.
Loved reading the Viking history from the Norwegian perspective. I only wish I was more familiar with the geography of the region and some of the cultural references. Don’t skip the appendices!
